I love Deep Ellum. It has its parking issues; but its sense of community and history is so wonderful. With a small pay parking lot next door, there was easy access to Cheba Hut Toasted Subs on Main. The sub shop comes to us from Arizona. Here less than a year, the franchise's enthusiastic management won us over right away. They have an expansive menu and were most willing to help us figure it out.
The subs are 4", 8" and 12" and are all toasted. The incredible Parisian style bread is shipped from a bakery in Colorado. We both had the Garlic Herb. They also have Wheat and White. The menu is divided by Chicken and Turkey, Meat and then just Veggie with 30 selections and 2 local signature sandwiches.
Cheba Hut also has salads made fresh to order that include grilled chicken, bacon, tuna, Greek, antipasto and house salads along with specialty and house dressings.
They have the usual "everything" for sandwiches and a special topping called Cheba Shake - Parmesan, oregano and other spices - and a house vinaigrette that's terrific on a sandwich. They also have multiple other sauces and dressings.
My husband ordered a local sandwich called the Death Star - a turkey and salami sandwich with bacon and jalapenos, pepper jack, and jalapeno cream cheese! Oooh wee! Muy picante! He loved it.
I had an Italian sub, the La Canna. With tons of flavor, it was fabulous! Smoked ham, genoa salami, prosciutto, black olive, and provolone all melty and hot with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle and that vinaigrette and Cheba Shake.
I noticed that they have beer and cocktails with daily specials. There's a bar up front and booths and small tables in back; but Cheba Hut is not a big place. We were there around 3:00 in the afternoon. We had been to Baylor and I wanted to eat lunch somewhere. Cheba Hut, that time of day, was perfect.
They cater and have a separate party pack menu. This bread they have would definitely stand up to transport. It is scrumptious toasted and doesn't gum up when compressed.
We loved the sandwiches and would definitely go back to dine in or get something to go!
