From Heartland to Vegan Dining: Country Cat Owners Buy Prasad and Harlow | Eater Portland

"Part of a busy, vegan-friendly counter-service group recently purchased by the Sappingtons, this cafe comes with the expectation that its plant-based commitment will continue: former owner Karen Pride told Eater she was excited for 'a commitment to plant-based dining to be carried on by the Sappingtons.' Pride and general manager/chef Brittney Galloway will be stepping aside, and the new owners told Portland Monthly they plan to bring heightened seasonality and the farmer connections they've cultivated to emphasize locality—though it's unclear how much they'll reshape the existing vegetable-focused menu." - Alex Frane

The food here is high-quality and tasty, and the blue interior is cute. The staff is very friendly too! However, it was not worth the $150 we ended up spending for two drinks, two apps, two mains and 1 dessert. Their drinks menu is limited and they do not have a cocktail menu. You can ask for something from their limited bar. All the seating is bar seating of high top, so it’s not an ideal place for a romantic date. The staff also did not seem to communicate very well with each other, we had multiple people coming over to take our order even when we just ordered from someone else. Overall, food is good but the experience mediocre.

We have been eating Chef Prasad's food since we moved here 10-years ago. It's always been amazing and last year he has started chef collaborations, that fuse different culinary styles. The first one we went to was Italian + Indian and the dishes were mind-blowing. The tickets are fairly expensive, but it's worth every cent. It include canapés, 5 courses, the drinks flow and you get to meet like-minded foodies. If you haven't checked it out already - don't miss out by visiting his website.

Chef Prassad creates magic in the kitchen. His style of food brings out the many flavors found in Indian cuisine. All good dishes are freshly made and serviced with perfect amount of spices.

Google
Quaint spot with eat-in kitchen vibes and wonderful food. The Saag Paneer was very flavorful and the Garlic Naan was freshly made. Service was courteous and attentive. Came here on a Saturday and was able to get a table quickly without a reservation. Will be back!

Google
Short staffed, average food, not worthy of another visit. The appetizer we ordered was the Tandoori Chicken Tikka, which was the best dish of the evening. We also ordered Andhra Chicken, which was too mild and lacked flavor, Dal Makhni which was excessively sweet and Paneer Makhni was definitely better than the Dal and Chicken. The service was ok considering there was only the bartender and one more guy taking care of all the guests at the Bar and in the dining area. We were not asked the spice level for the food and everything came out mild and sweet. Some other items on the menu look promising but considering our experience last night, I don't think we will be paying it a second visit.

Google
We’ve been regulars at Chef Prasad’s and Thali for the past 20 years, and the food has been authentic and superb EVERY single time. The hospitality from Chef Prasad and each member of his team also has been so without exception. (Photo shows a recent very tasty, healthy dessert.)

If you're an investor and are thinking of doing business with him, and want to invest your hard-earned money. STOP, do not do it. He has taken money from his staff and was running the restaurant. This is a caution. DO NOT INVEST here. No doubt his food is good, but if you are investing back off!

Google
I live in ny ny. This is da best i have ever had. I grew up there, was gone for a few years and came Back. I worked at an Indian restaurant called Shalimar in the 70's -great food. I've tried many. And I mean many. This tops!

Yelp
We came here on a weekday evening with a group of 5. We had a reservation for 5:30 pm but came a bit earlier. We were seated right away but that's where the efficiency ended. It took awhile for us to get our drink orders in, and then another long while to put our food orders in. And the time it took for us to get our momos (over 40 minutes) made us wonder if they were making the dumplings at that moment. It took a long time for us to get our food and I think by the time we got all of our food it was about 1.5 hours, which was very surprising. The slower food prep and service would make me hesitant to dine here again. But the food itself was pretty good. The tikka masala was more on the liquidy side, but the flavors were there, though the chicken was dark meat. The chicken vindaloo was on the spicier side. Everyone enjoyed the chicken korma. The garlic naan came out fresh but was not as warm by the time we got all of the dishes. Overall we thought that the food here is solid and our friends loved this place. We were just surprised at the amount of waiting here as the dishes came out with a trickle. The food here is more expensive than other Indian places and there is a good amount of care put into the food. It is nice that the rice came complimentary with the entrees, and the Indian thin crackers are great too.

Yelp
Best Indian food by far in Fairfield County! I am so excited we found it! The cauliflower appetizer and momos were absolutely amazing! Also the Basil Chicken Kababs were soo juicy. My family can't wait to go back

Yelp
Loved the cozy ambiance. We ordered paneer shashlik, shrimp curry, chicken 65 and garlic naan. Everything was delicious. The staff was very kind and friendly and the service was fast and excellent! Would visit again.

Yelp
Amazing food! Fresh, unique and consistently delicious Not only is the takeout wonderful but the ambience inside the restaurant is stunning !

Yelp
Beautiful and delicious. Sat at the bar. Looked like a great place to go with 10 people for a feast.

Bill A.

Yelp
We love Indian food and this was our first visit. Everything about the restaurant was excellent from service to menu. The ambiance is somewhat casual, with mostly communal seating at long tables, but it didn't feel crowded and it wasn't noisy at all. I think it's about the best Indian around these days and we can't wait to go back.

Yelp
The food was incredible. I came for a 40th birthday celebration with about 25 people. The food came out for each course all and once and was cooked to perfection. You can tell chef Prasad is passionate about the food and flavors as well as having happy clientele. I would highly recommend, the service, environment, and food are A+.

Steven B.

Yelp
Excellent food. Take out service can run a little slow but overall top notch. We love the chicken tikka kabobs

Yelp
Good authentic food. Great for take home or dine in! Nice atmosphere and quick pickup. Naan was wonderful, very flavorful main dishes, and even tasty rice! Highly recommend!!

Nick D.

Yelp
I attended Chef Prasad's chef collaboration with Tyler Anderson last night and it was nothing short of spectacular. Admittedly not all that familiar with Indian food, it all tasted delicious and it was much more than that. Place is super cozy, drinks are great and 5 star experience all the way around!!! He does these chef collaborations once a month, but visit for a regular meal or takeout as it is well worth it. -Nick D

Yelp
Chef Prasad... named after the man himself is located just off of merritt parkway on New Cannan's Main Street, beautiful location with outside seating, with backyard string lights pretty awesome in summer time. The inside is all blue with India accented furniture, walls, tables and all of the decor. The menu interestingly is the exact same as India the restaurant in West Hartford again under ownership of Chef Prasad. Incredible taste, authentic Indian food I love the sunheri bhindi (fried okra tossed in mild spices), the chicken kebabs are mind blowing they are better than any I've in India(the country) itself, another one of my favs is the rice so aromatic you can eat it plain with no need for a gravy...it's that good. You can expect excellent service at all of his locations with no exception to this one as well, just superb. It makes the whole experience of dining outside pleasant.

Yelp
Very flavorful, fresh and good meal but whoa the price -- 3 entrees (one was lamb) came to over $100 for take-out. Worth a try -- maybe lunch is cheaper ?!!

Yelp
It is safe to say that I am somewhat of a fanatic when it comes to Indian cuisine-- I really do love it. I started consuming Indian cuisine when I was in the seventh grade, and I can tell you that it was one of the best decisions of my life. I've eaten at many Indian eateries-- from little holes-in-the-wall to funky, club-like fusion places. I would say, on the spectrum of restaurants, this is a fine dining establishment. Very nice atmosphere that is welcoming and unpretentious. The first time I went here, I was with my friend, and we were the only ones there. The service was impeccable and the chicken vindaloo was fantastic, if extremely spicy, but that was a fault on my end, as I requested it to be extremely spicy. The second time, I went on my birthday with a few friends. It was crowded, the acoustics aren't great, but we were still able to talk. Highly recommended.

Ashish A.

Yelp
Amazing food, decor and service. Best Indian food I have had in a while. Steve the cook does a fantastic job. Naans were freshly made and were super crunchy. Can't fault them in any way.

J P.

Yelp
Continued quality and consistency but prices are SUPER HIGH for the food. Food is flavorful and fresh. Half and full entree is the same size but much higher priced.

Yelp
What an incredible meal! I totally love the vibe of this place; as you walking in you'll see their bright blue bar area followed by the decently large seating area. We started out with the Shrimp Manchurian. I love ANYTHING Manchurian and their sauce was on point. Shrimp was well-cooked and there was no shortage of sauce. For the main courses, we ordered Chicken Tikka Masala and two half-servings from the vegetarian options: Sunheri Bhindi and Malai Kofta. I like that idea of the half sizes because you can try more things that way! I would totally suggest applying it to the other dishes as well, not just the veggie dishes. LOVED the Malai Kofta, I highly recommend this dish to everyone. Chicken Tikka Masala was also very good, it wasn't at cream-focused and overwhelming as in other restaurants so that the tomato flavors really came out well. The only thing I was not a fan of was the Sunheri Bhindi; it was very dry and difficult to chew. If you are a fan of Indian food at all, Chef Prasad MUST be on your list!

Yelp
Food is good but seems to lack the level of flavor I am used to with Indian food. My garlic naan was burnt and had negligible amount or no ghee or garlic on it. Prices are steep for what you get. They are severely understaffed. There was only one server and he was aloof. The ambiance was nice and vibrant. Although they did have flys buzzing around the restaurant.
google avatar

Yelp
Yummy Indian food !!! Food is delicious and easy to digest (if you don't over eat lol). Must eat this finger licking food!
google avatar

Derek C.

Yelp
The menu prices are 15-20% lower than the prices you are charged. I placed my order online anyway, and was quoted a 30 minute pickup time. Chef Prasad then texted me 13 minutes later saying food was ready for pickup. Unfortunately, I live 15 minutes away--so the food sat & was cold by the time I got home. At my last visit 2 weeks ago, I was quoted 30 minutes for pickup, but it took 50 minutes. Very inconsistent customer service--for a premium priced ($150) family dinner.

Yelp
Legit one of the best meals my husband and I can always count on. Nothing bad here. We will continue to make this a staple here in new Canaan

Yelp
Chef Prasad is a great spot in town. We ordered take out from there a few weeks ago and absolutely loved the palaak paneer, very authentic. The presentation and service is great as well. The food was ready in less than 30 mins! Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Danni I.

Yelp
Ok. Seriously one of the best saag paneers I've ever had in my life. I usually call it palak paneer. I think saag paneer isn't solely spinach, while palak paneer is. Their recipe isn't spicy or offensive. It's delicate and really well-balanced. There's an umaminess to it that I can't get over. Got the half order and it was more than enough. The servings are big. We also got the Tikka Masala (if was our first time trying the place so we got the basics), and it was also really good. The sauce was buttery, a little creamy, not too hot/spicy, perfectly seasoned, and I love that they grilled the chicken. They use chicken breast, and no dark meat, which for me is a plus. The chicken wasn't dry. They cooked it well. We are very excited to try the other dishes in the menu. Oh, and we had this delivered. This is our first time, and we will defo be regulars.

Yelp
This is hands-down the best Indian restaurant in Southern CT!!! Maybe all of CT, but I haven't tried enough restaurants to claim that. Having moved to the region from NYC, I was looking for an authentic Indian restaurant and Chef Prasad turned out to be better than most Indian restaurants I've ever tried! Our favorite dish is the Chicken Biriyani - it has the perfect blend of spices and reminds me of my mother's homemade biriyani. It also comes with the most delicious Raita! Their paneer/chicken butter masala is incredible and their appetizers are great too! Our only complaint is that there aren't enough dishes on the menu and they don't have dine-in/outdoor dining open! Until then, we will continue to order take out for our staple dishes every weekend - we are so grateful for you, Chef Prasad! :)

Yelp
As soon as I walked into Chef Prasad's Indian kitchen I was in awe with the ambiance and decor. I really enjoyed all the small details put into the decor of the place. On top of that, the waitstaff were very friendly, welcoming and showed passion in what they were doing which is hard to find nowadays when you go out to eat at restaurants. I very very much enjoyed the saag paneer, paneer puri, butter shrimp curry and their featured swordfish dish. I highly highly recommend this place to everyone. They also have a nice outdoor seating area!

Yelp
The food was delicious!! We sat at the bar - which is fine for us. It was surprised to understand that the majority of the service is for take out. The dining room is used primarily for events or special occasions. We had the place to ourselves and throughly enjoyed it.

Rohit K.

Yelp
Excellent ambiance. They make very good appetizers and great have great pork chops. Very creative in preparation of the food and the presentation is out of the world. Great Indian food.

J J.

Yelp
Chef Prasad Rocks! Amazing service and delicious expertly prepared fresh Indian food. Highly recommend.

Carol R.

Yelp
Best (only) Indian food in town. All jokes aside,,, take out and dine in are to notch. This is one of the best Indian restaurants that I've ordered from in my life. Chef Prasad is a regular rotation in our house.
google avatar

Yelp
Its incredible After moving to NC was looking forward to trying the best yelp rated places and this did not disappoint. The chicken korma is honestly fantastic. The naan is incredible. This place is pricey, but its really worth it for a treat. And the curbside pickup works really well. Kudos to these guys for doing a great job.

Marco B.

Yelp
Truly above and beyond. Chef Prasad's knowledge and execution of the Indian cuisine is unsurpassed.

Yelp
We placed an order on-line to pick up after an event we attended. The food was ready on time and nicely packed in a reusable bag. The food was excellent. We tried the chicken tikka masala, Manchurian cauliflower, samosa and naan. All flavorful and good portion sizes. Service was gracious. We had a code for a free order of Samosa through Yelp for checking in. We showed it when we picked up our order and they were able to provide us with a partial order without waiting. We will definitely return. Thank you!
google avatar

Grace L.

Yelp
Ordered take out, was over 1 hr late, we even waited in the restaurant past our pick up time and the guy at the restaurant could not give us any information on when the food would be ready or where in the que we were. Restaurant was actively ignoring all calls coming into the restaurant. Should not be taking orders from customers of cannot fulfill them or be responsive. Still waiting for my refund for my order.

Jennifer G.

Yelp
Fantastic take out food. Really the best Indian food in Fairfield. I only wish we could still "eat-in" there!
google avatar

Jay R.

Yelp
Great experience with takeout. They double-checked the order to make sure it was accurate (pretty rare these days) and the food was really good - particularly the aloo gobi and the Manchurian cauliflower. Will be back.
google avatar

Alex K.

Yelp
This place was pretty good. The dishes were garnished with high quality fresh herbs and some unground spices, which in theory is good, but in practice they didn't always pair properly with the flavor of the actual dishes. I'd definitely go here if I was looking for somewhere to eat outdoors in New Canaan, but otherwise there are a couple of better Indian restaurants in Stamford.

King K.

Yelp
I can't recommend this place enough. This is wonderful the food they put out it's just so unique and tasteful and oddly I don't even like Indian food.
google avatar

Ed H.

Yelp
So - we have been loyal purveyors of Chef Prasad's for years. Yes the food is great, and yes Prasad is a really good Chef. But he has a glaring Achille's heal - staffing the restaurant to offer great/on-time service. Delivery can take over 90 mins! And when the restaurant gets busy, you can be told "sorry" a dozen times while you wait for your food. Please get your act together on service Chef Prasad. Sorry just doesn't cut it
google avatar

Vic Y.

Yelp
This is one of the best Indian restaurants that I've been to in the United States. Great flavors and textures. Good beers on tap. The menu was descriptive and extensive. Service was surprisingly attentive and helpful - we were impressed. If you have kids that don't really like spicy food, don't let them order any dishes marked with any peppers on the menu.

Natalie V.

Yelp
Amazing food! The chef gave recommendations and everything was delicious. The pokhara was especially good.
google avatar

Aisha P.

Yelp
This restaurant is a jewel. The ambiance is lovely and playful, wonderful indoor/outdoor seating, and the staff was very pleasant and attentive. The food however was the most outstanding part. I loved everything we tasted. Found the food to be very reasonably priced given the quality and exceptional flavors. Would love to return and try more. Menu has some traditional favorites as well as more unique offerings. Delicious!
google avatar

Drew L.

Yelp
The absolute BEST Indian food I have ever had...ever! NYC, London, this tops them all! Every dish is a knockout and the staff and service are second to none. Chuck is an absolute Rockstar running the house and Chef P is a genius! Prepare to be blown away ; )

Kay P.

Yelp
This place never disappoints. Gourmet. We are taking one of their cooking classes and can't wait. I hope we learn to making something just as delicious as Chef Prasad.

Aaien T.

Yelp
Awesome chef, great taste, masalas are delicious, price is New Canaan, but rent here is high so that's normal.
google avatar

Supriya M.

Yelp
I was blown by how amazing the Dal Makhani was even though I asked them to make it vegan for me. Possibly the best I have had in USA! Strongly recommend the eggplant chaat- I hate eggplants but took the risk on the waiters recommendation and it was so so so good! And thoroughly appreciated how everything was made vegan for me :) hope they add more vegetarian/vegan appetizer options though

Mina P.

Yelp
Pricy but that is expected in New Canaan- great food- probably best Indian food in this area

Pradiv M.

Yelp
Chef Prasad has started some special events at the restaurant in addition to take out. If you can get in for one of those events, run don't walk, you will be happy you did. Keep an eye out on his social media to know when to sign up...

Kelly F.

Yelp
Another spectacular takeout dinner prepared with love and care 2/11/22. Expanded the repetoire to Cauliflower Manchurian along with the Shrimp - as well as Fave Chicken Tikka and Chicken Saag. My daughter has taken to trying to request 2 orders of Samosa because she will not share. Wonderful meal - 5 stars.

Kristi M.

Yelp
We love Chef Prasad!!! We've been ordering for the past 2 years and have consistently had great good and customer service. Try the Cauliflower Manchurian as an appetizer!

Yelp
Came on a Friday night ! First impression - hosted by a very friendly and sweet hostess and then a beautiful ambiance of the restaurant and the smell got me really excited for food! Our waiter Darden was so friendly and you can tell he loves what he does! Delicious food and amazing choice of wine and beer. Cheers to Chef Prasad for such an interesting menu and fusion of flavors! Lamb chops are a must try will definitely be back !!! Kudos to the staff super friendly and nice . Oh and got a beautiful and yummy special of dessert in the house
