San Diego Restaurants Serving the Best Chinese Food | Eater San Diego

"This restaurant from a veteran Chinese chef is a gift to residents in the surrounding North County neighborhoods, who keep the kitchen humming with brisk takeout business. The spacious establishment is great for large parties sharing Shanghainese dishes like lion’s head meatballs, braised pork knuckles, and pan-fried glutinous rice cakes. The dim sum menu also showcases Shanghai sticky rice shumai and red bean sponge cake." - Helen I. Hwang

Chinese Restaurant Chef Zhu Opens at Torrey Highlands - Eater San Diego

"An experienced Chinese chef who’s amassed a following over the years through operating two well-received local restaurants just opened his third spot in Torrey Highlands, the North County community between Pacific Highland Ranch and Rancho Penasquitos off State Route 56. Replacing a barbecue joint in the Highlands Village Place complex, Chef Zhu is the newest endeavor for Shi-Liang Zhu, who graduated from a famous culinary school in Shanghai and opened Shanghai City on Convoy Street in 1999. With its pleasingly retro interior, Shanghai City became popular for its lunch buffet and was virtually the only restaurant in San Diego to serve regional Shanghainese cuisine up until its closure in 2010. In 2013, Zhu took over Double Happiness, a longstanding fixture in Del Mar Village. Renaming it Chef Zhu, he retained the Chinese-American menu of the previous restaurant while adding his Shanghainese specials. During the height of the pandemic in 2021, Zhu sold the space to Chin’s Szechwan, a local Chinese chain. With the new iteration of Chef Zhu in Torrey Highlands, the chef hopes his regulars from Kearny Mesa and Del Mar will seek him out. Decorated with photos of old Shanghai, the spacious restaurant and bar is now serving lunch and dinner. There are lunch specials like kung pao chicken and beef and broccoli but also an extensive array of classic Shanghai dishes, from breakfast staples like soy milk and you tiao to lion’s head meatballs, braised pork knuckle, bean curd with malantou, and pan-fried glutinous rice cakes." - Candice Woo

The food was superb. The menu is very large with a wide variety of dim sum, familiar, Americanized, Chinese food, and food that seemed much more authentic. There was plenty here for the vegans in the group and several tofu dishes. The service was pleasant and attentive. The vegetable Mushu was unremarkable. What truly shined was the dishes with sautéed vegetables. The tofu and mushroom dish had several different kinds of mushrooms and a delicious soy based sauce. The tofu and greens dish had bok choy leaves and also mustard greens. The vegetables were just done to the point where the flavors were fantastic. As far as the noodle dish, it was wonderful but one of us found a piece of what looked like metal wire in the dish. We obviously did not finish it and appropriately. They made us another one to take with us. They gave us some sesame balls for dessertgiven our experience. It is hard for me to downgrade them much for this given how good the food was. I want to say again that if you do not eat meat, the flavors of the vegetables were incredible. White rice, which is generally included was $1.50 per small ball and I didn’t feel that this should be charged for.

Very nice restaurant with a big menu. The tea had chrysanthemum and goji berries and was delicious. Shanghai rice cakes are always a good option and the dessert sesame balls were tasty. Highly recommend. There's also plenty of parking in this small shopping district.

The recent addition of Chef Zhu to the Torrey Highlands shopping center has been met with much excitement, and after my visit, I can confidently say that it's a worthy addition to the culinary landscape. Despite initial reservations about its proximity to Joyee's dumplings, I'm delighted to report that Chef Zhu holds its own. We got here Sunday afternoon, I was pleased to find plenty of parking available in the center, making access easy. The restaurant itself has undergone a stylish redesign from its previous incarnation as a BBQ joint, boasting an inviting interior that sets the stage for a memorable dining experience. While the customer service initially left something to be desired – perhaps due to a focus on online orders – the staff proved to be friendly and accommodating once we garnered their attention. Despite being the only patrons at the start of our meal, we found ourselves waiting longer than expected for assistance. However, once attended to, our orders were taken promptly and accurately. As for the food, it did not disappoint. We opted for the Chicken Lo Mein and Orange Chicken, both of which arrived as generous portions bursting with flavor. The Lo Mein, in particular, stood out with its delightful smoky undertones and perfectly cooked noodles. Meanwhile, the Orange Chicken boasted a delightful balance of sweetness and crunch, leaving us eager to explore more of the menu offerings. Overall, Chef Zhu offers excellent value for money, delivering ample portions of high-quality Chinese cuisine in a pleasant setting. While there may be room for improvement in terms of service efficiency, the delicious food more than makes up for any minor shortcomings. I look forward to returning to sample more of their enticing menu offerings.

This place is super authentic Shanghainese food, I’m impressed! We ordered from Hungry Panda APP, and got the food delivered at my door. The whole meal is just very delicious. Everyone enjoyed it. The quantity is pretty big. I order $120 food with tips, and we four just finished a little bit more than half. I totally feel this place is very worthy to give a try if you would love to check out some very authentic Shanghai style food. I highly recommend Lion’s head meatballs and sweet & sour pork ribs, also the scallion oil noodles are pretty tasty as well.

**Restaurant Review: Chef Zhu Chinese Cuisine** Dining at Chef Zhu Chinese Cuisine was an experience marked by outstanding hospitality, immaculate surroundings, and, most importantly, delectable food. Upon arrival, we were greeted by exceptionally friendly staff, setting a welcoming tone for the evening. The ambiance of the restaurant promotes a very clean and comfortable dining environment, enhancing the overall culinary experience. Our menu choices for the night included the Crispy Garlic Chicken and the Honey Walnut Shrimp. The Crispy Garlic Chicken was a delightful surprise, perfectly balancing sweetness and a robust garlic punch, with a satisfyingly crispy texture. It's a fantastic twist on the traditional sweet and sour chicken, offering a more garlicky flavor with less zest, which was exactly what we were craving. The Honey Walnut Shrimp also stood out, boasting a creamy and crispy texture. The shrimp were cooked to perfection, and the sweetness was just right, not overpowering but pleasantly subtle, complementing the rich, creamy sauce beautifully. The smell on both dishes… amazing. Chef Zhu's mastery in crafting these dishes with a perfect balance of flavors left us thoroughly impressed and eager to return. Based on our experience, we wholeheartedly recommend Chef Zhu Chinese Cuisine to anyone looking for high-quality, delicious Chinese dishes in a friendly and pristine environment. We definitely plan to come back! Improve: water/drink refill. Servers don’t stop to refill unfortunately. Hoping management can address. This is repeat behavior.

Known for Shanghainese Chinese cuisine. We love it and have been there couple of times. Often have to wait but totally worth it. The meatballs have great flavor, subtle spices and melt in the mouth. Have also tried the hot n sour chicken, lamb scallions which are really flavorful. Must try place.

Authentic Shanghainese food! Nicely decorated with a bar. It is nice to see another Chinese restaurant in Carmel Valley! The take out food was delicious. Friendly service. On a Wednesday night, it was a full house at 7pm. Will go back to try some other dish.

This is an honest review of the Chef Zhu restaurant. I was very hungry and was craving for Peking duck. We got the table quickly. The waiter was very friendly. I clarified if their Peking duck has crispy skin and comes with bun and scallions, the answer is yes. They even have pictures on the menu that showed Peking duck with crispy skin so I ordered it. Well, I was very disappointed that their “Peking Duck” is just a roasted duck as you can see in the picture. The service was great which they deserved two stars. We ordered walnut shrimp, general Tsao chicken and stir fried noodles. It was ok, not amazing but way overpriced.
