Chela Park Slope - Review - New York - The Infatuation

"People are fine, but sometimes you just want to surround yourself with tacos. And since Chela is offering them for lunch and dinner every day until 11pm, this is a great place to know for the next time you need to be alone with handheld Mexican dishes late at night. They also serve things like enchiladas and a range of margaritas that you can enjoy on their curbside patio or take to-go. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Team Infatuation

"I met my boyfriend, Augie, at Chela modern Mexican in Brooklyn for skinny margaritas (the regular ones are too sweet for my taste) and enchiladas suizas. Chela always feels like a bit of a party, and the food is so damn good."

Went here on a date with my husband. The drinks amazing. This place was absolutely beautiful and the service and food was great. Our server Daniel was awesome. Food amazing will definitely return hopefully with more family and friends.

From start to finish, everything was full of flavor and made with care. I started with the wings crispy, perfectly cooked, and covered in a sweet and smoky glaze that’s seriously addictive. Then I had the Tacos Árabes and the Brisket taco both were packed with bold, delicious flavors that felt like comfort food elevated to the next level. To drink, I ordered the Mezcal Paloma, which was refreshing with just the right amount of smokiness. It paired perfectly with the meal. The vibe was welcoming, the service was great, and you can really taste the love in every bite. Highly recommend if you’re in Brooklyn and craving amazing Mexican food. I’ll definitely be back!

We loved the atmosphere of this beautiful little Mexican restaurant. The colors and textures of the decor are appealing and lift the spirit as do the simple touches added. Drinks are great and the bartender is friendly and accommodating. No backyard but a few tables on the street with the front of the restaurant open for fresh air dining. However as a vegan this place is lacking. The menu has many vegetarian options but not one meal designed for a vegan. Yes it’s easy to omit the crema and queso but then the meal is lacking the creamy texture and flavor it was designed to showcase. If you’re feeling creative you could make it work. We enjoyed our drinks and left in search of backyard dining with vegan choices.

Google
I must say, this place has one of the best palomas I've tried among other Mexican restaurants! Their enchiladas suizas were rich in flavor and came close to homemade enchiladas, along with their side dish of arroz y frijoles. The sauce was creamy. The staff was very attentive and super friendly. I will definitely be visiting again to have another paloma :D

Google
What an absolute gem. The atmosphere was warm, colorful but not overwhelmingly so, creative and unique. The music was fun and lively. Each staff member was kind, sincere, helpful and professional. The passionfruit chipotle margarita was delicious and balanced, and the tacos were scrumptious. I’ll definitely have to come back for the carnitas! I had the fish, vegetable, and chicken, each were unique and delightful. Chicken tacos can often be bland and dry I find but these were juicy and flavorful. I haven’t seen a veggie taco with that ingredient combination before and each component complimented the other artfully. Even the free chips and salsa were unique and delicious. You don’t usually see a free salsa with such care and depth of flavor. I can’t wait to come back here and try more options from this thoughtful and unique menu! Cheers to you, Chela, you’re doing it right.

Amazing!! The music and atmosphere is on point. The bartenders were super friendly and the food is great. Lots of gluten free / vegan options. Will definitely be back

Google
Baja Fish Tacos were slamming (2 for $10 @Happy Hour, good size). Happy Hour weekdays is Noon-7PM, Sunday 4-7p. music is good, bustling but not overcrowded, vibes good, staff are moving fast and food came out quickly. I had the coconut margarita with a tajin rim. It was yummy

Google
I had high hopes for Chela, but unfortunately, the experience left me underwhelmed. First off, the lighting inside was way too dark. I tried taking a few photos of the food, but they all came out either blurry or completely shadowed… The food itself was hit-or-miss. The nachos were a real letdown. They came out a bit burned, and surprisingly, there was no guacamole on top, which felt like a missed opportunity. On a brighter note, the taco I ordered was genuinely good, flavorful and well-seasoned, so props for that. The layout of the space could also use some rethinking. The restroom is awkwardly placed, with customer tables positioned right next to it. It felt uncomfortable waiting in line, trying not to disturb people mid-meal. I would be upset if I were seated there.

Yelp
Do yourself a favor & make 100% certain you order the ribs, and try as many things on the menu as you can!!! The food is all so incredibly stellar. You absolutely must get the Chela Ribs- Baby back ribs, agave chipotle glaze, spicy slaw, and yucca croquettes.) Yum!! They are an actual symphony... Artwork... poetry on a dish. All the tacos are in a class of their own but special kudos to The Arabic tacos... a wildly imaginative spin on two glorious cultures combined in the most perfect way. You'll basically want to slather yourself in their magical guacamole. The flautas a real delight, the list can just go on and on... You definitely want to run, not walk to this place!!

Yelp
My experience here is always great. The staff is always attentive and the food is excellent. The vibe of this restaurant is just nice. I love the big open windows they have. You get to see the neighborhood at its finest. Also the back addition is always a plus. The drink are super good as well. You really can't go wrong with anything at Chela. It's a real gem with nice people.

Yelp
Love this restaurant! The food is delicious- the fish tacos were fresh! The service was excellent, very attentive.

Yelp
A good neighborhood spot for some food and drinks with the family. I come here usually with my family if we're in the mood for more than tacos. We really like the guac and calamari here. The wings were ok but nothing special. The fish tacos are amazing! My daughter doesn't like fish and tried some of mine and immediately wanted to trade me for her steak tacos. My husband really likes the chela ribs as well. Service was fine and our drinks were good.
google avatar

Olesya M.

Yelp
We came here during their brunch service. We all got tacos (fish, shrimp, Arabic) which were decent. The calamari was the best dish for sure - perfectly cooked though the portion a bit small. The margaritas were pretty much just ice. Not much flavor either. Overall an ok experience.

Yelp
Friday night dinner during happy hour. Place was pretty packed and lively. Service was good our waiter was very attentive. The Mexican poutine with shrimp was SO good as well as my birria tacos. I also had a coconut margarita that was delicious. Good happy hour prices! I will definitely be back whenever I am in the area again.

Yelp
We came in tonight for my sister's birthday. We actually came here for the first time a year ago for her last birthday and have been back so many times since! The food is on point and it is super consistent; Every visit it tastes exactly right. Guacamole, Arabic tacos, brisket tacos, fish tacos, birria, and the torta were the stars of the show! And always are. I know that's a lot, but it's true. They're always delicious. Their special marg & every other drink was delicious too, never too sweet, always balanced. Thanks again, Chela! We'll be back for sure.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing drinks! We stopped in for food close to the end of the night and weren't disappointed. The mole was chocolatey and spicy. Great chips. Bar seating is comfortable and the staff are friendly and attentive. We'll be back!

Yelp
Came on a Saturday evening for dinner with my husband. It wasn't super busy when we arrived, so we were seated right away. We were given water and chips with salsa automatically. No physical menus provided, scan the QR code on the table. Their website menu is a little confusing to navigate, I think the layout can be improved because I couldn't find the non-alcoholic drinks under the dinner menu, it has it's own separate tab all the way at the top of the website. I'm currently pregnant so I had asked if they do mocktails and our server said yes basically anything on their cocktail menu can be made virgin. I ordered a virgin Mango Margarita and it was delicious, a bit on the tarte and lime-y side but refreshing and cool and half price due to the lack of alcohol. From their dinner menu, I ordered the shrimp tostada which to me was very delicious. Shrimp had great flavor and the tostada was perfectly crunchy and not greasy. I wanted to order a second one, I liked it so much. I also ordered their shrimp and arabic tacos, but we didn't like them. Arabic tacos were too sweet and the flavors didn't mesh well together. The shrimp tacos were crispy but the coleslaw was pasty and with the tortilla, the pasty mess sort of congealed and got stuck to the back of my teeth when I bit into the taco, very annoying having to scrape off. Our waiter was kind and noticed that we didn't finish these 2 tacos and asked us what was wrong. We told him we didn't like them at all, and he kindly took them off of our bill without us asking for it. My husband ordered the guacamole and that was also a hit. We finished 2 baskets worth of chips which were crispy and again, non greasy. For our mains, my husband ordered the enchilada suizas, and I ordered the carne asada. Our main courses were tasty, my steak was cooked and seasoned well, and wasn't dry. It was a big portion as well but I managed to finish 95% of my 12 oz steak. I was particularly looking forward to having their tres leches dessert with peaches because I saw a photo of it from another reviewer so I was craving it. However, unfortunately that night they were out, and only had churros to offer. Bummer! Guess I have to come back! Overall, we enjoyed our date night at this restaurant and will definitely be coming back again soon. I recommend this place for established couples, and groups of friends. Not the best place in my opinion for a first date because it's very dim and dark inside, and also hard to hear who you're conversing with. Also side note, they've got an open kitchen which is really cool if you like watching the chefs do their thing. They're pretty efficient and food comes to your table as soon as it's ready. Good food, excellent customer service and kind, hospitable wait staff. Really enjoyed my evening dining here. I will return for cake and maybe more shrimp tostadas.

Yelp
Love it here! Always have a good experience and the food is real mexican which is hard to find in the city sometimes. Happy hour is priced fairly and service is always good. You can tell the guacamole is made to order and the chips are made in house too!

Yelp
I really do feel this place is overrated. First let me start by saying we sat in the back of the restaurant because the front was a bit crowded. There were fruit flies over our food and drinks. We spent most of the time swatting them away. I ordered steak and eggs with a salad. The steak could have used more flavor and it was a bit rough. I couldn't finish the steak or my drink. The drink wasn't so bad however I ordered a strawberry margarita but was confused on where the strawberry was. My friend asked the waiter just to be sure that we were getting what we ordered and he said we were. It didn't taste like strawberry even after mixing it several times. The amount of money spent here for 3 out of 4 of us to not be happy with our food was ridiculous. I for sure will not be returning. Their customer service is really good. Everyone was so friendly and attentive but the food was a no for me.

John H.

Yelp
Everything including service was the best. Prices were reasonable for the servings we received. Go there and have a drink and the nachos.

Yelp
I'm in a really good mood! Why, you ask? Well my Yankees are 8-2 and I know, I know it's too early to celebrate but what the heck, I'm going to celebrate any way. As I walked in to Chela, I was hoping to see the game on their TV but it wasn't. Patrons were happy, drinking and dining on what looked like generous portions of food. We were seated right away and were told where to scan the menu QR code. Then, chips, salsa and water appeared instantly. So far, my kinda place. The menu has several options: Brunch, Brunch Drinks, Lunch, Appetizers, Dinner and Desserts. On Sundays, there is a HH from 4-7 pm, we met for lunch at 3pm. Not quite bummer because I'm drinking, no matter what time. lol! Their drink menu is quite impressive from Margaritas to Micheladas to Sangria to Paloma's etc. The Aperol Spritz appealed to both of us: there was a Strawberry Spritz which my friend ordered and I wanted an original Aperol. We munched on the chips and salsa; chips were delicious and fresh and the salsa had a nice kick to it. The drinks arrived and my friend really enjoyed the Strawberry flavor, I enjoyed mine. The tacos we ordered came out a bit after the chips were served which was appreciated. My friend ordered the grilled shrimp ( they come fried as the other option which was nice of waitress to give both options). with aioli ( I call it crack sauce) on the side. She loved them but wished she ordered avocado on the side. My rotisserie chicken tacos were delicious and the sauce on the side was smokin.. Both dishes came with rice and beans on the side as you can order 1 taco for $6 or 3 for $22 and get combo. The rice and beans were a disappointment, bland and could have used cilantro and a bit more spice. Our waitress was accommodating and courteous. The ambience is very chill and perfect for a lazy afternoon or celebrate another Yankee win! Chela is located on 5th Avenue, Park Slope. Take R train to 4th Avenue and 9th then five minute walk to Chela. Also, B63 to 5th Avenue and 7th Street.
google avatar

Vince M.

Yelp
The food here is consistently delicious and prices are reasonable (well, for Park Slope). The staff is always super friendly. At time the music is a bit too loud, but overall it remains one of my favorite spots in Brooklyn
google avatar

Yelp
Surprised at Chela. This is among the best plating I've seen in NYC, ranks up there with the luxest restaurants. But the rest isn't pretentious at all, it's refreshing. Had the esquitas, ribs, and Arabic tacos. All exquisite. My only complaint is the corny service. We had two different servers and both were trying so hard for tips with invented energy that it came off as fake. Not sure who's training these people, but please switch it up.

Yelp
Came here for dinner Saturday night with my coworker because we were in the mood for tacos and drinks. The restaurant has very friendly staff and a fun, lively atmosphere. We were able to grab a table outdoors and were lucky to have Cheryl as our waitress! She provided great service and was accommodating to what we needed/wanted. The tacos were delicious - we ordered the fish, shrimp, beef and pork - and the salsas they have added a great touch to them. As for the drinks, they were refreshing and yummy.

Yelp
Great bartender. Drinks are 100% worth your $ and liver. food is so yummy. We had queso undido with chorizo. Sooo good. Next burritos. I WISH i was still hungry, I want more but my stomach is say "you crazy, there is no room"!!! So instead Ill be back.

Yelp
The food was amazing. The service was excellent friendly staff and very knowledgeable of the food. We were ask if we had any food allergies. The ambiance was great in tune with the decor very lively.
google avatar

Yelp
Great food and service. Cool interior intimate bar style restaurant. We tried the arabic and chicken tacos, quesadillas with chorizo ,and classic margaritas. All awesome , would have been even better if we arrived in time for the m-f happy hour 12-7 prices. The comp chips and salsa were also decent- the salsa has a chipotle flavor.

Yelp
The service and food at Chela in Park Slope is fantastic! I recently took advantage of their happy hour with some friends and the Mexican Poutine with Brisket was to die for. Highly recommend this spot!

Yelp
Great food and amazing selection of margaritas! And the vibe inside is very cute, especially for dinner
google avatar

Yelp
Went here after a shift at the hospital (Methodist) with some coworkers. It was happy hour and we got some delish margaritas. Great deal! Will be back.
google avatar

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place but the food was really subpar. We ordered from the brunch menu. So we were a party of 4 with kids. We got a mix of brunch dishes and kids menu stuff. The kids quesadillas were dry and just pretty bland. The drinks were delicious and made me smile, especially the frozen mojitos. However the food was a letdown. Of course the staff and service were amazing! They were very friendly and helpful. There is a main restaurant part and there is a back room area as well.
google avatar

Solange B.

Yelp
As a frequent visitor of Chela! I feel compelled to leave a review. I visited this past Tuesday and was in awe of how delicious the food is. I ordered the Arabic Taco, brisket Taco and Chicken taco. The Arabic taco was out of this world. Sweet and savory on a pita like tortilla. My server was knowledgeable and attentive throughout. The drinks were well balanced, and I enjoyed my mango chipotle margarita. Will definitely return soon.
google avatar

Iris O.

Yelp
Arabic tacos (too gamey I did not like it but hubby ate it). Brisket tacos and chicken were good. Portions are really small for the price the $9 yucca bites are tiny. Excellent music and bartender. Great drinks. Super friendly staff.
google avatar

Chantelle W.

Yelp
Really nice happy hour with both food and drinks. I loved the pork taco. Would love to come back and try more items. I appreciated that their margaritas weren't too tart.
google avatar

Amy A.

Yelp
Taco Tuesday for the win! The chicken mole was my favorite but steak, chorizo, and cauliflower were all delicious. With a kids menu and tamarind margaritas, this was a satisfying weekday supper.
google avatar

Vicky L.

Yelp
Made a reservation on a Friday and got seated right away. The second we sat down, we were given chips, salsa and a bottle of filtered water. -Virgin pina colada $6: Too sweet and very watered down. I was expecting more of a slushie consistency. - Guacamole $14: Delicious! Wish it was bigger though. - Shrimp taco $6, Fish taco $6, Arabic taco $8: Shrimp was fresh, however felt like it was more batter than shrimp. Fish taco was the best, the chipotle aioli and red guajillo sauce added great flavor. Arabic had caramelized pork shoulder which was really tender but was heavily salted however, the onions did help balance the saltiness a bit. - Brussel sprouts $11: SUPER SALTY. Every single brussel sprout was heavily salted. Didn't feel like the tomatoes, scallions, and cheese on top made a difference. - Rice $4: Very mushy and soggy. The service was alright. There was a couple of people throughout the night to ask if everything was ok. However, as my friend and I was eating, there was someone that came to take our plates before we even finished our meal so felt like they rushing us a bit but there was plenty of seating. Overall, I would not consider coming again. Edit caption

Anette Marina K.

Yelp
Service was excellent. This restaurant was a great pick and lived up to the expectations of previous reviews. The waiters consistently checked on us and even after bringing us rice with beans instead of just rice, they brought the rice to the table within a minute. Quick service and great ambiance. The food had so much flavor and from their guacamole to their tacos, everything was incredibly fresh. I would definitely come back. Not to mention, the drinks were of great price. Would definitely come back!

Yelp
Came here for Cinco de Mayo and did not anticipate how long i'd have to wait for food (hence why a star is knocked off) BUT that's my fault for wanting to go out during that day. The inside is pretty small so I wouldn't really recommend if you're a large party. Prepare to hear other people's convos as the tables are close together -- the surroundings are loud but you'd be able to hear whoever your with. The margaritas were *chefs kiss* and I cant believe i'm saying it but i'm slowly becoming a marg girly. For our entrees, we both got the chicken enchiladas and idk if It was just because I was hungry after waiting two hours to get my meal but those warts by far the best enchiladas i've ever had. They were SO good that I forgot to take a picture

Yelp
Happy hour drinks at this spot is On point the place gets packed during the start of the weekend. If you Live in the slope This is One of the better happy hour spots.

Yelp
Don't underestimate new yorks taco game. These tacos were very good. Service was top notch.
google avatar

Yelp
Went here with a couple girls friends and food was really good. Loved the red salads as it had a Smokey feel. Also loved birds tacos. Great service and great Mexican food
google avatar

Veronica L.

Yelp
They serve chips and salsa as you arrive, as well as a bottle of water, which is great! The food presentation is very pretty - we got the Chicken Enchiladas, which was pretty good, and the Pollo En Mole Rojo, which was very mediocre. The servers are very attentive, but they kept trying to take our plates away when there was still food on them. We felt a bit rushed, yet there wasn't anyone waiting for our table. I went to their Tribeca location last year and had an ok experience, so I decided to give their Park Slope location another try and everything was still just ok.
google avatar

Yelp
I walked by this place so many times and always wanted to try it. It seemed like a nice classy area to grab some quick Mexican food for lunch or dinner. I finally decided to dine in one day and was surprised when they asked if we had any reservations. I told the host no but luckily they had some available seating. Walking in I felt a little underdressed as we just came from the gym. It definitely had a classy atmosphere and I started to see how upscaleish it was. We were greeted by a server immediately and was given some chips and salsa. We skimmed the menu looking for brunch but unfortunately we missed it by 20 minutes. Disappointed, we checked the dinner menu. We decided on seafood enchiladas, fish tacos, brisket taco and corn on the cob. Tacos came out first and it was amazing. The brisket taco was by far the best I've had. It was juicy and tender and full of flavor. The seafood enchiladas came out second and that was also the best enchilada I've ever had. The red tomatoy sauce turned this up a notch. Packed full of seafood with each bite! They forgot the corn and we had to remind them but that was amazing as well. 10 out of 10 would return.
google avatar

Victoria L.

Yelp
Solid food, service and drinks. I didn't expect the shrimp to be fried (I may have misread the menu) and it was warm inside as I'm not sure if they have AC (sliding doors were opened). We would've done better eating al fresco on this particular summer day. But otherwise, it's totally a spot I'd visit again when in Park Slope and in the mood for Mexican. Nice waitress and my water glass stayed topped off. Chips and salsa were solid which is appreciated because sometimes the free house snacks leave something to be desired.
google avatar

Aelita P.

Yelp
Went to Chela with a friend for lunch today. I got the chicken tacos. The entree portion comes with 3 tacos plus a small bowl or rice and beans. He tried three different tacos- shrimp, birria, and pork. I thought my tacos were just okay. Chicken was a touch dry and wasn't super well seasoned. Rice and beans were also just fine. My friend said his tacos were also pretty mid. Definitely wasn't bad by any means, just not especially exciting.
google avatar

Yelp
Writing an updated review. Chela is amazing. One of very few restaurants I have experienced that remains consistently good over the years. That is special and rare, especially over the past few years. This visit I tries their happy hour for the first time. How have I not tried this before.... The Mexican Poutine Fries...damn...seriously some of the best I've ever had. The sangria never fails to disappoint. Its robust and includes vodka, so you definitely will feel it after one drink! I ordered the Chela ribs for my main course. What a treat. Going to devour these leftovers....

Yelp
Look no further if you're in the area. Exceptional service, food, drinks, and vibe. Buzzy without being overbearing. Casual and cool without the pretentiousness. A gem of Brooklyn's 5th Avenue.
google avatar

Ayesha A.

Yelp
I left from visiting a friend nearby and stopped in at Chela. This was my first time here but I had it bookmarked on Yelp. I figured I had it bookmarked for a reason so I would give it a try. I enjoyed everything about this restaurant. The ambiance, the service, the food and the drinks. I was pleasantly surprised by this random pop in. I would definitely return.

Monissa W.

Yelp
Just came here for the first time last night for restaurant week and everything was so beautiful and delicious! The people working there are also so nice and kind. It was $45 for an app, entree, and dessert. My friend and I got the same thing from the pre-fixe menu. We got the molotes, enmoladas, and strawberry flan! Such a good deal. Also got some happy hour margs! I took off a star bc we sat inside and it was way too hot. I don't think they turned on the AC and pretty sure it was cooler outside than it was inside. Would definitely come back when it's cooler out.

Yelp
My five stars might be colored by the unexpected free shots we got as we wound down our dinner, but I'm reasonably confident that I would've given -all- the stars no matter what. During a recent Brooklyn staycation at a nearby hotel, I booked us reservations at Chela. Admittedly, the primary draw was their queso fundido, to which I may have an unhealthy attraction. Come for the queso and margs; stay for abso-fucking-lutely everything. Frankly, I don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu here. Things we learned... They do serve pitchers of margaritas (although we couldn't find that explicitly spelled out on the menu). They come in a giant milk jug. Shared among three, we ended up all thoroughly inebriated. This may or may not have been related to the pre-dinner cocktails we had at Clover Club. Portion sizes are generous across the board. I have zero regrets about ordering the queso fundido with chorizo as a starter. If I were to do it again, I'd probably pull back on getting a main per person afterward, though. The fundido might as well have been a meal for two. I simply couldn't resist trying out their chile relleno, which happened to be a special of the day, IIRC. It easily rivaled our other fave relleno at Kuxé. If you're friendly with the servers and demonstrate that you're having the time of your life, you may be presented with a totally unnecessary and pleasantly surprising round of shots to close out your meal. YMMV. Shots aside, Chela's high on my list of fave Mexican eateries in the city and I'd come back in a heartbeat. The price point isn't cheap, but it's not meaningfully more than the mediocre joint we go to down the street on the regular. This one's worth the subway ride or a stroll over after climbing at The Cliffs.

Yelp
I have probably eaten from this place well over 10 times.. About a month ago I ordered my usual burrito but felt so sick afterwards that I couldn't sleep and I was up all night. Because I have eaten at this place consistently while I did think maybe it was the food I tried not to have it deter me. Alas, I ate there again, my usual burrito, yesterday and I have been sick all day. I am not a sensitive stomach. I've never had this issue my entire life but unfortunately, I think I now have to say goodbye to Chela. I hope whatever issue is there, is resolved.

Yelp
We checked this place out on a Sunday night. Ambiance is perfect for date night. However... The food is quite bland. I had the Pollo En Mole Rojo. Then I found a fly in my lemonade. Things happen but unseasoned food won't work out for me. The drink my friend had wasn't good either. I'd try another spot instead despite the high rating here.

Yelp
Got off work early and I was starving walked in here early afternoon for a bite and drink and was very pleased. My waitress was very friendly and attentive and honestly the whole staff was nice. They give you complimentary chips and salsa to start, fresh chips and the salsa was authentic and flavorful. I had the passion fruit margarita very refreshing with the right amount of alcohol. I had 2. I had the wings also fresh with a great Buffalo sauce not too spicy or salty. Nice crunch and taste. They have a great happy hour menu, and regular menu overall. The ambiance is casual and laid back great for groups, kids, dates. Outdoor seating for a great breeze I'll definitely be back

Yelp
Chela Modern Mexican was the destination of a spontaneous Taco Tuesday date night for me and my boyfriend. The first thing I noticed was the beautiful, vibrant and colorful murals on the wall and ceiling depicting the Mexican people and their culture which is complemented by great architectural choices like the blue tile wall and the warm amber lighting giving the space a welcoming yet authentic touch. We were started off with complementary chips and salsa. The chips have a slight sweetness to them compared to most tortilla chips (but we didn't mind) and the salsa was standard. We ordered the barbacoa and chicken tacos off the Taco Tuesday menu, an additional shrimp taco, fried yuca, platanos, and flan. Our tacos tasted good but not amazing. The taco shells of my barbacoa tacos were slightly soggy and the flavors were good but not anything to write home about. The chicken tacos were good and had a mild kick to them. The shrimp taco proved to be my favorite but I've had better elsewhere. The fried yuca was slightly sweet and tasted great with the addition of spicy mayo. The plate included a small container full of spicy mayo but we didn't find it necessary to drown our yuca in sauce. Spicy mayo fans, however, can rejoice. My favorite part of the meal were the platanos. The platanos were mildly sweet, not at all greasy, and perfectly balanced with the cheese that they sprinkle on top. This is a must get appetizer. To end the night, my boyfriend and I shared a caramel flan for dessert. We had mixed feelings about this dessert. The caramel was slightly bitter, meaning the caramel was burned. We weren't sure if this was on purpose, because this made the dessert taste more complex. But the combination of the bittersweet caramel with the fruit reduction was questionable. I probably wouldn't order this again, but I can passively enjoy it if this was served to me. In terms of service, it was friendly and efficient but needs work in certain areas. Our waitress told us the tacos were relatively small, but when they arrived they were sizeable tacos filled to the brim with their respective proteins. We weren't complaining, but we definitely would have ordered less. In addition to that, we were served the shrimp taco on the same plate as the chicken tacos which was problematic because my boyfriend is allergic to shellfish! The staff happily fixed that for us but the staff should be more detail oriented when it comes to food allergies. Overall, for a last minute date night, Chela Modern Mexican did the job. I just wouldn't go out of my way to visit.

Yelp
I had an amazing time here for Valentine's Day dinner! We made reservations and even though we were both running late due to train delays - they held one reservations. They had a Vday special but we chose from the menu instead. We ordered a pitcher of sangria to start which was abundant and delicious. We had the yucca bites, tacos and another dish that was full of seafood. Very delicious and amazing service!
