Living in Kyle has proven difficult to find any quality Chinese restaurants. It's not for the lack of trying, oh no, it's because good, authentic establishments don't exist south of Austin! Anyways, after running the Austin 1/2 marathon I decided I would venture out a little further to find a restaurant that serves some dishes that no one seems to carry around me. Enter my google search result named Chen Z Noodle House "in Austin" (which seems pretty far out from Austin, but I digress).
Walking in, doesn't flaunt spender, rather a family-owned business still trying to recover from the Covid imposed sanctions. I walked in right when they opened on Sunday at 11. The open sign was off, one individual was mopping while three employees were eating. That is a good sign of a restaurant, the workers eat their own food! Anyways no one was there and it they still seem to be trying to get patrons to eat inside the establishment. Truth be told, I'm more of an individual who eats Chinese at home. The restaurant is clean but there aren't little bells and whistles, but I could care less b/c the food is the star. There menu is very large and has all the staples one expects at a quality restaurant. BTW, if you think Panda Express is authentic, please give this place a try and notice the difference.
The egg rolls were good but not specular while the pan-fried dumplings were very good! One of the hardest dishes to find around here is beef chow fun. Well, they had it but their item is called stir fried beef flat noodle. The beef tasted like it had been marinating in soy sauce a little too long but otherwise it was an outstanding dish and very authentic. The noodles are cooked perfectly as was the beef, falling apart in my mouth and not being chewy at all. All the traditional veggies were present, green onion, been sprouts etc. The sauce was wonderful and exactly what I've been craving for over half a year. The other dish I really enjoy is Mei Fun. Again, this is an interpretation issue as they call it "Singapore style fried rice noodle. One can barely make out the smokiness that only comes from a well-seasoned wok. In other words, trying to copy it at home would be very difficult. Like the Chow Fun all the normal veggies were there and the noodles were perfect! Finally, I had the pork fried rice. Another well executed dish and very traditional. The only issue was I was craving a sweet tea and they only had canned soda.
I found the staff were very willing to make me happy even with a slight language barrier. But is that a problem when you want authentic food? Heck no, that means they've lived the food and are experts with regional delicacies. The portion sizes are a little smaller than one might anticipate however do we really need MORE food? I believe it's the perfect amount and I only issue this statement so one can prepare they won't get 4 lbs of noodles, but a portion size that makes sense. Ultimately it appears I have to drive to get quality Chinese and I will be coming back to sample things like "pork intestine & blood cake!?" Ok maybe not that one, but the menu has quality items that can satisfy anyone. So, if you're in the area or decide to take a small trip, you won't be disappointed.
