"Mapo tofu is a world-famous Sichuanese classic dating back to the Qing Dynasty. Word has it that this century-old shop is the true original source of this numbing, spicy dish, invented by Lady Chen. Silky tofu, ground beef and spices are cooked in a stone pot that stays hot for a long time, perfect with a bowl of steamed rice. Zhong dumplings and lotus leaf-wrapped steamed pork in spiced rice flour are also worth trying." - Michelin Inspector

definitely a must try in Chengdu, toufu is very numbing, so may be wise to ask for less mala. i love the kungpao chicken though... lovely!

Highly recommend the spicy beef dish (the one on the right bottom pict dont know the name), it had lots of bean sprouts with tender beef. Chicken kung pao was quite good and not spicy at all. I like their sour and sweet fish as the outside was crispy and inside was soft but the fish had manyyy small bones so we couldnt finish it. Mapo tofu was okay, we had the one with beef but i can’t taste the minced beef.. just the paste…

This chain is where mapo tofu started by old Chan Po Po. Spicier than the many versions of mapo tofu over the years. Other dishes are typical of Sichuan style cooking, lots of oil and chili peppers. And watch out for those peppercorns, one tiny little bite can be quite numbing. Overall this branch is comfortable, spacious, pretty good food and even got live music to boot, adding to the ambiance.

Tough place to rate. The mapo tofu is great, and worth the inevitable wait in line. It's spicy—spicier than many versions I've had, but not punishingly so—but also has a lot of flavor and good texture (the soft tofu contrasts nicely with chewy meat). If this review were only for the mapo tofu, it would be an easy five stars. We also had a vegetable side (you mai cai) that was simple but expertly cooked, and the complimentary tea was good. Unfortunately, the other dishes we ordered were problematic. The gong bao ji ding (AKA kung pao chicken) was served very soon after we ordered, yet already cold. Not only that, but the flavor was lacking and the chicken-to-peanut ratio was not as we would have liked. Similarly, a dish of ham and chives was pretty short on ham, though at least in that case the dish was hot and tasted pretty good. So if you want good mapo tofu, this is the place to go, and if you're going to go here, the mapo tofu is an absolute must. But I wish you better luck on the rest of your meal than we had.

It was my first time trying original Sichuan style ma po dou fu and it was more than expect. It’s more savory and spicier than Korean or Japanese style ma po dou fu. My favorite dish was hui gui rou. I usually don’t eat pork belly because it’s too greasy for me but this food was so delicious. + avoid peak(lunch/dinner) hours unless you want to wait in line for long time

Went to Chenmapo today to get some Mapo Doufu. I used WeChat to order which was quick and easy. The service was great, food came out fast and the beer was really cold. The mapo doufu was fantastic, easily the best I have ever had. The gong bao chicken was good, but a little sweet for my taste.

Authentic Sichuan lunch. Need to wait during lunch time, unless having a room.
