I might be wrong, but I had stopped going to Udupi years ago because the flavors were off. I know there are non South Indians who cook there, perhaps their ingredients have changed. But this is why I wanted to try a new place. I ordered Take Away, but sat and chatted w friend. The folks working were kind. There was a family eating and they seemed to be enjoying their food.
The food took a while to come. I know that this is a complaint from a lot of reviewers, but I figure that every restaurant in Artesia takes time. I am someone who doesn't mind waiting, and I plan for it.
I ordered the medhu vadai (3 orders bc there are only 2 vadai per order and the vadais, sasly, are small), veg biriyani (spicy), lemon rice, naan and fish tandoori. I asked for one order of the vadai to come without sambar etc bc I liked to eat my vadai plain or w coconut chutney.
The flavors of the vadai were amazing. I just wondered why they were so small for nearly 8 dollars (my only complaint)- though they did come w sambar, yogurt, pickle, green chutney.
The veg biriyani stole the show, I keep talking about it a week later. The fish tandoori was incredible, as well. Tilapia that is boneless and marinated flavorfully (and a lot of it). It wasnt technically tandoori because it came out more like pan cooked, but I did not care because the flavors were poppin. Probably could've used more raw onions as a filler w my naan, but I was so happy eating.
The lemon rice was good and flavorful, but my order could've used a little more salt.
And even though didn't expect it to be, the naan was really good - perfect conduit for the fish.
Lankans are known for their kothu, and so I was hesitant to try theirs, BUT based off what I had, I wouldn't worry about trying a South Indian style kothu there next time.
I am also eager to eat inside next time, and go for a dosa, uthapam, iddli or other South Indian specialties.
