The Best Latin American Food in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Salvadoran pupuserias are scattered throughout East Portland beyond 205, and Chepe’s is one of the most popular. Pupusas, flat corn cakes that are sparingly filled with things like beans and cheese, are grilled and served naked with hot sauce and curtido, a pickled cabbage and carrot slaw spiked with jalapeños. They’re also available with more fanciful toppings — shrimp and cilantro sauce, chorizo and egg — plus sour cream and avocado."

Google
Chepe’s pupusas are absolutely amazing, so many options. I will say my favorite is the Chipilin! The empanada is also sweet and an amazing desert. Plus their Salvadoran Punch is so fruity and refreshing. Really have enjoyed everything I’ve ordered from here flavorful with some welcoming staff.

Google
I've had papusas before. But theses were much better. The fresh taste and quality came through, very delicious. I got the cheese and jalapeno and the cheese and bean. They came with a bag of pickled cabbage each. The pickled cabbage and carrots/Jalapeno was a awesome edition. The plantains were also great, perfect ripeness and not overly oily. The habanero sauce was very hot and the other red dipping sauce was sorta tomatoy. Both good. Overall great heavy filling food. The pupusas were not huge, but not small either. Definitely hit the spot.

Google
Delicious culinary experience, from the most traditional Pupusas as well as the most delicious combinations highly recommended for people who want to try something different in Portland Oregon.

Google
Such a fun spot, especially after volleyball! This place is right next to the sand courts, which makes it super convenient and fun for hanging out after playing! I was in a volleyball league and came here with friends afterward. I had a blast. The food was great! I had the shrimp pupusa, and it was delicious. Flavorful and really satisfying. I also ordered a mango juice, but I didn’t realize until I got home that I never got it. So sad! :( I guess I was having too much fun to notice. Service was pretty standard. Not amazing, but not terrible either. I just didn’t get my mango juice

Google
This is my only place for pupusas, everything is very good. But today, got me 2 pupusa’s and there was barely any cheese in them, it was pure tortilla thats BS Also bought some quesadillas they were not good at all, actually they are pretty bad. Hopefully the owner read this review because I’m planning to keep coming here.

Google
Absolutely delicious Salvadorian food! I wish I could give them more than 5 stars. We ordered too much food! Plantains and beans, tacos, papayas, a pickled slaw. Fun ambiance!

Google
My husband bought 10 pupusas yesterday, I warmed one up for breakfast and found a whole piece of glove INSIDE my pupusa! I'm disgusted. Soy Salvadoraña y nunca debería pasar esto.

Google
This was a referral from a friend. A place I had probably passed a hundred times. I'm so happy I tried it. I highly recommend eating here or getting it to go. The food is awesome! Best pupusa I've had in Portland.

Yelp
Great food, cool atmosphere, great service. A hidden treasure in outer Southeast! The Carne Guisado was especially delicious, but the pupusas were really good too. Will definitely come back!
google avatar

Ricki B.

Yelp
I ordered the Carne Guisada and 4 of the bean and cheese pupusas.. everything overall was pretty good. I normally make a Dominican carne guisada, but I didn't feel like making it today, so I ordered the one here to see how it would taste. It was good but it lacked a lot of the flavor you get from the green seasoning that's used in Dominican and caribbean cuisine. Even if they added some cilantro it would have given It more flavor and maybe some onions or garlic. The pupusas are good but a little salty for my taste. I think i'll stick to making my own carne guisada, but i'm glad I gave this one a try. I wish Portland had more Caribbean places like dominican or trini, etc.

Yelp
Chepe's has the best pupusas in town! I recommend the pork and cheese pupusa. So yummy! I tried their tacos and would probably not get them again, the meat was a little dry. Chepe's definitely shines when it comes to their specialty dishes. We also tried the wet carne asada burrito and since the same meat was used from the tacos, the experience was the same. The meat is a little dry. I would come here if you're looking to explore Salvadoran food! Grab your tacos and burritos elsewhere. Service was good & the food came out hot. They bring you condiments & napkins in a little tray as pictured in my photo. Overall, a great place. I will be back to try more Salvadoran dishes!!

Yelp
Awesome pupusas and so much more. The plantains were perfect. And the thing I loved the most was the cabbage and hot sauces! A definite new go-to place for me!!

Yelp
The price goes up. I cannot find good pupusa in WA. I had to come to chepes when I visited Portland. Pupusa is bigger. I just ate one. It was good and tasted the same.
google avatar

William H.

Yelp
Found this place on an Instagram recommendation. There was a large selection of pupusas all priced at $5 as promised. Then there were a number of combos and dishes that rounded off a very good menu. Service was polite and timely. The food was very good. What was interesting was a pickled coleslaw that had the most unique flavor that really complemented all of the dishes. This place is worth the drive and worth the price to visit

Yelp
So delicious and really fast service. Also not expensive at all. The pupusas are huge and with lots of filling. The shrimp pupusas is a huge portion as well and will fill you up with delicious sauce. The order of empanadas comes with 3 and are huge too! The tacos are delicious as well and very clean environment too. Authentic pupusas for the win! Also we had atole de elote (hot sweet corn drink) which was so delicious and not too sweet. Such a comfort drink. Came all the way from Vancouver to get some delicious authentic pupusas as I have been craving for weeks. Definitely worth the 30min drive!

Yelp
Excellent. I got takeout. It was all good. Not much atmosphere but I definitely come back if I'm in the neighborhood

Yelp
Although I ordered first before my friends my order came out last it seemed as if they had forgotten my order. My friends' orders came out before mine and came out quickly as well. It was not until my friends mentioned my order and I showed my receipt that my order came out. I just thought that was a little weird. The taste of the fish pupusa was great though. And the inside ambiance felt like I was on a summer vacation somewhere.

Yelp
The Best Pupuseria in Portland. Ordered Chicken Pupusa, Shrimp Pupusa, Traditional Cheese Pupusa and Sopa de Pata. Foods were great and nice services. Highly recommend

Yelp
Got it delivered for the first time. The food was awesome. Finally authentic pupusas.

Yelp
I checked this place out with a friend who lives in the area and had been before. It was a little hard to tell which door to use, but we soon found our way in and to the ordering area. The menu was large, and since I am not too familiar with Salvadorian cuisine, I ordered almost the same thing my friend chose, with only minor differences. A combo platter seemed like a good thing to get to try a lot of things. I ordered the Combination Platter # 3, which came with a pupusa, a Salvadoran tamale, refried beans, plantains, and sour cream. For the pupusa and tamale you had many choices, and I went with a cheese and jalapeno pupusa and a chicken tamale. We both ordered the Horchata de Morro. Our drinks came quickly and were soon followed by our food. The service was friendly and relaxed. Along with our meal was a bowl filled with curtido, which was a delicious fermented cabbage slaw with oregano. Everything was amazingly yummy! The pupusa was crispy and stuffed with melted cheese and jalapenos. Easily the best pupusa I've ever had! (Which, admittedly, hasn't been a lot) The tamale was rich and pleasantly filled with chicken and corn goodness. I think there also were potatoes in it, but I'm not sure. It was some starchy vegetable and it actually went quite well with everything else! The beans were excellent, as were the plantains (subtly sweet and savory) and the crema was perfect with the plantains. The horchata was served over ice and was smoothly sweet and replete with nuttiness and spices! Perfect on a warm day like this one. I can't wait to come here again and bring more friends to experience this excellent example of Salvadorian food!

Yelp
Papusa heaven! Not to mention a sweet legit beach volleyball court in the back!! Great all around!

Yelp
Loved the food! Great service, clean restaurant and set up, would highly recommend to all.

Yelp
Excellent food every time, traditional and delicious! Don't skip on the "salad" that comes with the special pupusas.

Yelp
Wow! This place is hidden treasure. I must have driven by a million times and never noticed the sign. Was looking for some good authentic caldo de pollo close to home and Chepes did not disappoint. Amazing and rich broth, good quality meat and nice size portions. Will be back to have some pupusas soon.

Eric G.

Yelp
Friendly, casual central American food. Nice breakfast from typical Mexican joints. Unique plates and beverages. Good for kids but space for others to get away from kids. Order at the counter with a big visual menu.

Yelp
We're in Portland for a wedding and we're looking for a place to pick up food to sustain us while making centerpieces at my friend's house. I was so happy when I found this place. I love pupusas, and they have a huge selection. They had several other items in the menu that looked good and were things you don't see in a menu often. We didn't eat there so can't talk about the table service, but the guy who took our order was really friendly, and was super nice when I saw the quesabirria taco after placing our order and asked to make a change. Everything was delicious. I loved the sauce that came with the taco, and the sauces that came with the pupusas. Will definitely check them out the next time we're in town. They also have a back room with a patio area and bar that you can rent for events. Looks like a great space for a party.

Annalise K.

Yelp
The food takes a little while to get out but it is always very fresh and delicious! I couldn't recommend this place more! It is the perfect comfort food that is filling but not too heavy!
google avatar

Brian S.

Yelp
An excellent and authentic El Salvadorian restaurant. We ordered a nice selection of popusas and they were fresh and delicious! A great experience.

Angelica A.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! I really enjoyed everything I had. Food was authentic, flavorful, and fresh. The ambiance was perfect and staff made the experience enjoyable. I would highly recommend this place.

Yelp
Great food! Always fulfilling and satisfying! Cheese pupusas are my favorite here My go to for Salvadoreña food
google avatar

Isabel R.

Yelp
Only bought plantains but you could taste how old the oil was as it had a meat flavor. Prices were very high for pupusas. Would never return as makes me question kitchen cleanliness with that old oil. counter service was nice.
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
Good food, nice staff, but check your orders before you leave they sometimes get it wrong. I have gone twice and not gotten the food I ordered.

Erika S.

Yelp
Worst service ever! The cashier ladies were absolutely rude. They had confused my order and gave me double the amount of food. I told them I had only ordered one item and the lady turned to her co worker and said "this girl ordered double now she is changing her mind and only wants one" as she rolled her eyes, and the lady said "oh well we already made both orders, sorry" how dishonest and unprofessional! It was their mistake and they were going to make me pay for it. I just walked out after that. Never ever again.
google avatar

Natalie d.

Yelp
Delicious food!! Good portion sizes. Great pricing. Thank you! I'll definitely recommend you to friends.
google avatar

Julie N.

Yelp
OMG! Best birria in the town and the consome ... left me speechless. I also loved the fluffy and flavorful rice, just wished my plate came with more instead of sharing space with 3 limes and pickled onions. The queso birria was huge, definitely worth the $4.50. My only critique are the chips and salsa, nothing spectacular. Tasted like store bought or Juanitas, but that wouldn't stop me from coming back. This is my go-to spot for birria!
google avatar

George H.

Yelp
Best birria queso taco I've ever had Hands down Might have to get creative with parking but the food is well worth it
google avatar

Yelp
I have never been so disrespected and devalued as a customer until I went to this location. Not only did they mess up my order they refused to acknowledge their mistake and remake our order. I asked for no pork because I am allergic and they still gave me pork. And on top of that I asked for two orders of plantains they didn't include it in the order. I ordered jalapeños cheese papusa and huevos rancheros and they didn't include it but they still charged me for it. When I called to tell them the owner claims he never makes a mistake. When he clearly did. I sent my brother in law back to grab the missing items and the owner was arguing with him for over 10 minutes. We are not trying to steal we clearly want the rest of our order. I understand mistakes happen and they get busy. But refusing to acknowledge their mistakes is beyond me. Below is a photo of the pork puspusa I NEVER ordered. I highly do not recommend this place. Steer clear from it because the owner obviously does not make mistakes lol. Terrible service and terrible food.

Yelp
WHAT TO ORDER Their specialty: Pupusas. I've had them all over town, but Chepes tops them all including speciality food carts. More often than not, you can see two people in the kitchen kneading the masa. My favorite is the queso and jalapeño: ample size, cheese melts perfectly, crisp edges and soft center. At some places a knife can barely cut through the corn tortilla. Try the loroco variety for something different. The homemade juices are excellent and for only $2! On a Portland 90-degree day the cucumber lemonade and also the three fruit mixture (never heard of one of the fruits) hit the spot just right. WHAT NOT TO ORDER The carnitas street tacos (very small) are a sub-par version. And the refried beans were a bit off, but you get a good sized bowl. Service was friendly and fast. Parking is odd as you may need to back out to busy Stark Street. The space is huge, it gets more appealing as you drift toward the open bar in the back. And they have at least three full-sized sand volleyball courts for rent. They are well kept. I'm not sure what the connection is between volleyball and Pupusas, but whatever.

Rachel F.

Yelp
the pupusas and pickled veggies are to die for! so incredibly flavorful. I got the pork & cheese pupusa alongside the tamale plate (the rice & beans that come with it are so yummy too) and, oh my goodness, that will feed you for days! I wasn't expecting such huge portions and it just made me love this spot even more. you get SO much delicious food for such a good price. would recommend this spot to anyone!

Eric San J.

Yelp
Authentic pupusas! Extremely tasty, these were the bomb. You'll drive 15-20 minutes outside downtown Portland, but that's okay. These were worth every mile and penny. Recommend 10/10.
google avatar

Yelp
I had never tried pupusas before but my wife convinced me to give this place a try. The restaurant looks unassuming but the food was delicious. We ordered the pupusas Revueltas that are made with Cheese, Pork, and Beans. They are served with a side of Cabbage coleslaw. You can prepare the pupusas by topping them with the slaw and the mild sauces from the salsa bar. The pupusas were super juicy and flavorful!!! We also added an antojito of Yuca and Chicharrones. The Yuca was amazing with a crispy crust in every bite. The Chicharrones were also very good. The restaurant was clean and welcoming. I was impressed at how quiet it was. The decor was very cool and the bathrooms were super clean.

Nicole K.

Yelp
Chepes is a nice place for pupusa. There are many options including vegetarian and the pickled vegetables they come with are delicious. everyone is friendly and polite.
google avatar

Yelp
Dear Yelp, Stop already! Yet another place I would have never tried except for you. Thank you to all the reviewers before me. Your reviews were very helpful in learning what to try. I was a pupusa virgin before today but, now that I have tasted the forbidden fruit I will indulge again soon. The steak pupusa was outstanding as was the pork tamale. The bread in the pupusas! My god, where has that been all my life? The pork in the temale was so outstanding I'll get that pupusa next time. Come and check out this dive. You'll be glad you did. Update: Took a client of a large area employer who, after tasting the magic that is a pupusa, said he'll definitely be back with fellow workers!
google avatar

Tony A.

Yelp
If Chepes was closer in town the lines to get a table would be wrapped around the block. Twice. As it is, Chepes is out on the 175th block of SE Stark and more than worth the drive. Truly outstanding food and polite, welcoming service. What stands out at Chepes are their pupusas, a marvelous Salvadoran cornmeal flatbread stuffed with your choice of fillings -- chorizo, queso, chicharron, beans, mushrooms, and so on -- and topped with sauces and, again, your choice of meats, beans, cheese, veggies. At our last visit we ordered a pair of pupusas, one queso and bean, the other queso and chicharron -- topped with sauces and chorizo, along with a queso and jalapeno pupusa topped with sauce and avocado. So delicious that when you're finished you're tempted to lick the plate. Chepes easily warrants repeat visits. Excellent food, quality service. Five stars plus.

Yelp
Pupusas are bomb!!reminds me of the Bay Area ones !! I'll drive to Portland for pupusas here anytime !!

Karina M.

Yelp
Let me start by saying we LOVE Chepe's. It's delicious and we love supporting local businesses. However, we have been given the wrong order at least 3-4 times. My partner cannot eat dairy, so he always orders the Pork and Bean pupusa. This is an existing item on the menu already, not something I request special for me. This pupusa, per the menu, is only supposed to have pork and beans. Unfortunately they seem to always add cheese. Initially I would order online and order the pork and bean, but I wouldn't specify "no cheese." I thought maybe I need to start specifying in the notes. When that didn't work, I figured maybe if I ordered by phone. Still kept getting the wrong orders. Not sure what else to do, as they keep adding cheese even when I specifically and clearly say no cheese. We still love them and want to keep ordering, however it's getting very frustrating. Pictured is my online order, along with the steak pupusa that specifically said NO cheese in.
google avatar

Susan O.

Yelp
We ordered through Grubhub. I asked for salsa and they were very generous with it. Food is still hot and looks amazing. I'm so impressed. My hubby ordered asada tacos. Meat tasted perfect but it only comes with meat , no toppings u less you ask for it. Next time we know better. Food was also delivered so fast. 40 minutes from order to delivery. I will definitely get food from there again. So happy! Thank you!
google avatar

Fiona P.

Yelp
What do you get when latinx culture starts making what I can only white-ly compare to hot pockets and pita sandwiches... Omg YUMMMMMMM! That's what you get! Absolutely he brave: they're the perfect balance of cheese, meats, bean, veggie, etc and worth a trip out to the food carts just for a whiff of these delicious treats I did knock ONE star, only because the salsa is all too hot for my Caucasian tongue and I wish they'd make one for my handicaps! Pretty please?
google avatar

Smith Q. J.

Yelp
This place is in the middle of nowhere (deep Southeast Stark) and not near any other decent restaurants. It's Salvadoran, which I've rarely if ever had, and I enjoyed it. Get a few pupusas and tamales and share them. It's also relatively cheap. And when you walk out the back to get a drink at the bar, you almost feel like you're in California with the sand volleyball courts, which are pleasantly out of place.
google avatar

Jordan N.

Yelp
If I could give this place a negative star I would. The woman who served my Tía and me didn't have her mask on and was yelling all over our food. They messed up our order and when we said something was wrong, she said they can't fix it. I spent over $115 for incorrect orders. Also, they didn't throw out our order, but instead they took it to the back and just sat it out, probably to give to someone else.
google avatar

Lauren R.

Yelp
Dude, this is my favorite restaurant of ALL TIME!!! Every single time I drag someone's butt all the way out there, their like, "whaaaaaat are you doing? " but then as soon as they eat they look at me like a great and fearless leader. I'd you wanna impress all your hipster friends being them to the best place ON EARTH (....maybe just outside of El Salvador) for pupusas!!! Their plantains and cream are yumminess in my tumminess too! And literally the best beans i've ever tasted!!!! Don't know about any of the food i've been talking about? I don't care, you'll love it. I promise and if you don't like it? I'll reimburse you so you can go buy yourself a better tongue, because yours doesn't work.
google avatar

Hannaly V.

Yelp
pupusas are way to expensive now and the amount of sauce they give you is ridiculous! i used to love coming here when they first started in a food truck. The owner is a very nice person it's just his workers are very rude.

Alex D.

Yelp
Loved the food , hate the employees. Always get rude stares from the one Spanish front lady for no reason when I buy everyday Tonight I ordered and picked up my food all paid for but received 20 calls from them and got threatened by one of their employee(the scrawny guy with glasses) saying " I didn't pay for my food " and that "just watch when I see you again" * although when I called back he said he accidentally called the wrong number* No reason to go back there unless I want to add a charge to my clean record Lost a everyday customer.
google avatar

Denice S.

Yelp
Yummy!!! So good and great service! All items are excellent!!! Yummies! And good prices.

Jennifer A.

Yelp
It's so delicious. Obviously the pupusas are super tasty, but also the burrata tacos are fabulous. The steak pupusa is a favorite in our house. I also love the bag of pickled veggies and put them on everything.
google avatar

Hector B.

Yelp
Atmosphere is really nice. Service is great. Learn Spanish to truly enjoy! Beers are simple. They have 4 sand volleyball courts. Omg. I'm swollen like a whale. Pupusas were addictive! We ate or tried to 5. Couldn't finish! Delicious but a ton of food. I'll return!
google avatar

Dave D.

Yelp
Chepes is a lot of fun. I'm not a Papusa expert, but I enjoyed them here. The staff are friendly. Give it a try!
google avatar

Sierra P.

Yelp
I live right down the street and this is my all time favorite restaurant. The food is so ridiculously good. I walk down there to order something pretty consistently and have never been disappointed with the service or the food.
