Chicago’s best gluten-free restaurants - Eater Chicago

"Chef and owner Chesareè Rollins started a food truck business several years ago after adopting a gluten-free lifestyle. She has since expanded her operation to a brick-and-mortar location inside Avondale’s Food Pick-Up, a ghost kitchen on the Northwest Side. Customers can try items like a lobster belle sandwich served on gluten-free garlic bun, chicken wings, loaded nachos, jerk chicken salad, and more. Carryout and delivery ordering is available here." - Jeffy Mai

Dined here for the first time and I was blown away by the food. We had crab cakes to start and my main dish was catfish and jambalaya. Both were amazing and we were able to taste the gumbo, it is divine. The atmosphere is relaxing and comfortable. Thank you to the Chef Chesa and staff for making us feel welcome and almost too full for dessert. I’m already looking forward to my next visit.

I'm sorry to hear about other's disappointment with Chesa's. We've been there multiple times (breakfast, brunch and dinner) and love everything they have to offer. The food is excellent and the drink options creative and delicious. The hardest thing is deciding on what entree to order.

Google
I’ve been here before and it’s extremely hard to find a gluten-free Restaurant with food as good as this we even had fried lobster with Mac and cheese, chicken and so many things that we normally can’t get. And the fact that this is 100% gluten-free makes it better and they have an amazing happy hour! Great service as well!

I recently had their food truck come to my plasma center to serve the employees. All of the food was paid for upfront. It was a not a good experience. All of the chips they gave the employees were expired. The food was cold. They were scheduled to be there from 12pm- 2pm and they left before 2pm. They then threw all of there garbage in our recycling bin. I would not recommend this truck to anyone.

Had a 12:30pm reservation for Mother’s Day and was highly disappointed. The hostess barely acknowledged our presence and didn’t seem to happy to be at works Our waiter/server never came to table after we were seated, not even to bring water. Ended up leaving after sitting there for nearly an hour. There was no apology for long wait time, the customer service here is terrible. Other people who had reservations were also complaining due to poor service.

Google
What a fantastic find! We were hungry and Googled what was around us while driving, and decided to check Chesa's Bistro and Bar. The ambiance was upscale and romantic. Our server was friendly and courteous. She knew the menu well. The food was prepared beautifully, and the flavor matched the beauty. If you're afraid of gluten free, eating here will change your mind! I had the short rib with purple grits and peppers; my husband had the lamb chops with roasted veggies. We shared a jalapeno cornbread appetizer. They have a great liquor list, and I read, a great weekend brunch. Don't miss this woman chef owned business!

Google
This place is very unprofessional. They haven't changed their hours on Open Table or their website. We made reservations for Saturday Aug 12th at 11 am through OpenTable. We even had to put a deposit to hold the reservation. We arrived and guess what, they were closed. You people owe me the cost I paid to Uber there and back home.

Don’t go here if you are vegan. I was at nature fest today and ordered a vegan Mac. Vegan means no animal products. This was made of regular cheese. I’m just confused as this was presented as vegan when it was indeed not. I even asked about the cheese. And for $10 a bowl, very disappointed. Saying something is vegan when it is not is very frustrating. This should be advertised as vegetarian. I attempted to communicate with the worker there, but with only one person working and long lines it was very difficult to do so. Also- I didn’t have a kid with me. I didn’t have a wait for my food at all. Your response was inaccurate. You never told me you were out of vegan. If so, I would not have ordered the food as I AM VEGAN.

Yelp
I'm not sure what Ryan M.'s talking about because that hot chicken sandwich was AMAZING! Perfect amount of spice, the bun held up, still crispy by the time I got it home ( I was late picking up). You can order on the iPads in the lobby if you want to make sure all your money is going to Chesa. She also has responsible packaging, with no styrofoam in sight! We also had the catfish sandwich which was delicious too. I can't wait to come back and try something new, if I can get away from the hot chicken! I'm so happy to have found a place with gluten free options like hot chicken and fried fish. It's been years since I've been able to order that kind of stuff.

Yelp
Awesome food. The jerk chicken taste so authentic and the person behind the food is just as amazing as the food itself. Whenever she comes to cater our university, I always make sure to go and grab some!

Yelp
over charged, with out an offer for a refund on the item I never ordered, received or ate. the only have one gluten free item on the food truck menu, soup-like nachos. disappointing food and customer service, but they did wish me a good weekend!

Yelp
I was excited to try a new place. Ordered delivery, and that came fast. Whoever packed the food, however, must not know that the wing combo with fries comes with jumbo wings, and that loaded nachos comes with shredded lettuce and pico de gallo. The rest of the order was so-so at best, but I would not have felt compelled to leave a negative review had they been competent enough to pack the correct order.

Yelp
A delicious dream for anyone with celiac or gluten sensitivity! The salmon and collards were very tasty.

Yelp
I am so happy to have another dedicated gluten free spot in Chicago, however my order of the burger and garlic fries did not live up to the glowing reviews! My burger was WAY over done and the garlic fries were pretty soggy by the time they got delivered to me. I'm still willing to give this place another shot, and hoping this time was a fluke.

Yelp
Just had CheSa's for lunch thanks to Fooda. The Chicken Nachos were delicious and worth it. Definitely worth trying.

Yelp
I am now obsessed with this place. The burgers are FABULOUS and everything is gluten free!! My little celiac heart is happy! And the garlic mayo, changes everything! The burger was amazing, and the bun didn't crumble like all other gf breads. CheSa's is my new food love

Lori H.

Yelp
So sad. Was expecting tacos at our event today & ended up with rice bowls, with a side of attitude. Very disappointing. The rice bowls were small, nothing special but tasty enough. I can only assume they forgot, weren't prepared or miscommunicated. Needless to say I won't be recommending CheSas anytime soon.

Yelp
The food is so good! I ordered a turkey burger and garlic fries via Uber eats. The bread didn't crumble like other gluten free bread, the portions were great, and the burger was delicious. It tasted like an AMAZING regular burger and not cardboard like some gluten free foods. I'll def order again. The tacos and lobster sandwich is on my list of things to try.

Brittney E.

Yelp
When this place first opened it was amazing! Now portions are small, the wings vary in flavor, and you can never get delivery anymore. Good luck trying this place out if you don't drive! I used to order every Saturday evening. But now you can never order because they are always closed.

Rachel B.

Yelp
First time I ordered the GF grilled cheese it came on a hamburger bun. I gave them a second try and it came on whole wheat gf bread. Fries are average.

Yelp
If you are living with Celiacs, a gluten sensitivity, or just living a Gf lifestyle, CheSa's has some of THE BEST gluten free food in Chicago. My husband has Celiac Disease so over the last 10 years together we have probably tried almost every restaurant with a dedicated GF menu in the city. We just ordered delivery from CheSa's last week and for the first time in years hubby was able to safely eat a huge double cheeseburger with the best GF bun we've ever had, french fries, yummy dipping sauces, battered fish tacos, & buffalo wings. As an avid gluten lover and carb queen myself I was blown away at how delicious all of these GF items were...better than their glutenous counterparts out there. He even double checked with me several times throughout the meal that everything was GF because he couldn't believe how delicious everything was lol We cannot wait to order from CheSa's again and try more of her delicious menu!!

Yelp
My colleagues and I have hired CheSa multiple times for our PrEP4Love Live and various events at Reunion Chicago and we are always thrilled to have her! The food is packed with flavor AND good for you, and she's great to work with. Whether we have some dietary restrictions, need just her or want the truck, prepaid or cash and carry, she's always ready to accommodate and does it with a smile. And often on short notice! It's very important for us to hire black business owners and I'm happy that CheSa is the full package.

Devin S.

Yelp
I never write reviews but I had to because you can tell how much they care just by tasting the food - and seriously some of the best Buffalo wings in town. The right size, sauce, and crisp. The truth!

Jim Q.

Yelp
We asked Chesa to be one of two food trucks at our wedding about 2 hours outside of Chicago. It was amazing! Everyone loved the food, she recommended the perfect amounts of each dish for our 200 person group and she was so easy to work with. If you have any sort of event I highly recommend working with Chesa in the future. The food is great and so is she!!! Also no one had any idea anything was "gluten free". Anyone who has to eat gluten free knows how important that is! From Mac and cheese to chicken sandwiches it was universally loved by gluten free and gluten full people!!!

Chelsea C.

Yelp
I went to CheSa's at a Food Truck Event. The food was so flavorful. The Hot Chicken was amazing. It had just the right amount of heat for me. The Kale mixture was full of flavor as well. I will definitely eat from CheSa's again.

R. M.

Yelp
Nashville hot sandwich was a bunch of chicken pierces on top of the two pieces of bread...wasn't that good, nothing to be bragged about.

Annette M.

Yelp
I wish I could give negative stars. I have no idea how they say its 'Healthy'. The kale salad has so much salt, if I had high blood pressure, I would have had a stroke. If I wasn't so hungry, I would have thrown it away. Never again.

Redd L.

Yelp
Skepticism is my middle name. A coworker sent an email to the team to try out a new Gluten free food truck. It was close by and l didn't bring lunch so I decided to give it a try. Chesa's Gluten Tootin Free food was delicious to say the least. The chicken meat was tender the vegetable mix was flavorful and for the price; you receive a nice portion size. I truly enjoyed my meal and can't wait until her scrumptious food is in stores. Definitely will be a staple in my weekly eating healthy regime.
