The 21 Best Restaurants in Marseille, France | Eater

"Marseille fell in love with pizza when a wave of Italian immigrants arrived toward the end of the 19th century. Locals all have their own favorite pizzeria, but the one almost everyone agrees on is this simple Panier district place plastered with photographs of famous customers who’ve long flocked for pizzas from the wood-burning oven. There are other dishes to order, too, like steaks and succulent fried baby squid with a lot of garlic. Come early or late to avoid a long wait for a table." - Alexander Lobrano

Loved it, had the anchovy pizza from the wood oven - crisp, hot and moreish tomato sauce. My friends enjoyed the cheese pizza. The cote de boeuf was fantastic too and really good value for the amount of meat. Very friendly service, id definitely come back

One of the best in marseille. Walking around the old town and around 11:15 asked to make a reservation for the same day lunch. They said sure. One of the best pizza I’ve ever ate in my life. Pan fried calamari was too garlicky and left horrible taste in my month hour hours. But I would definitely be back to have more pizza.

I usually don't spend so much on a meal, but this was worth it. The best pizza I've tasted anywhere, simple, yet packed full of flavour. Try the anchovy one!!!

It was a little difficult to get a table, but well worth it. We had read that there are no reservations and you should show up early. We were there right when they opened for dinner, but I suppose something changed recently because all the tables were reserved. We were told we could come back at 9 and try then. Around 9, a line formed outside and they would bring people in without reservations as they got tables. They only have 2 pizza flavors but both were outstanding. Then we got the fried squid that comes with salad and bread. That was the best squid I’ve had in my life. Cash only. I would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Marseille.

I arrived at this restaurant without reservation. Even there were many empty chairs, other people leaving, they didn’t let me sit and eat there. They just didn’t want to deal with me, as the main waitress was a an old lady with a limited English. However, I had had to walk there and getting rejected without a reason was annoying. Thanks to the universe, I found another better restaurant with a better food than a pizza for dinner.

Google
There were two of us and we shared a 1 person pizza, both anchovy and cheese. The wood fired pizza was incredible! you must also try the fried squid and the eggplant - was an incredible experience! Note it was a lot of food for two people and also included a salad. So delicious! You need a reservation, we stopped by in person two days in advance to make it

Google
Recommended by a local while traveling in Marseille and so glad we changed plans to go! Had the fried squid and a pizza to share, was both delicious and such a friendly environment. It was super popular at 1pm lunch on a Saturday, would maybe book if going any other popular time.

Food is great but believe but we really loved the atmosphere and service of this place. Reasonably priced, no frills but food that feels home cooked with love 😌

Yelp
Bustling, busy, and a bit noisy. Not loud enough to complicate conversations. Traditional eatery of Marseilles with a long storied heritage. Popular among locals and celebrities whose photographs line the walls. Service is efficient, but not overly accommodating . Best to speak French or have a French speaker in your party. Do not expect American-style service. Again this is typically French. Food and very good. Take your time and enjoy.

Yelp
Disappointing to say the least. I was really looking forward to this culinary experience after reading about Chez Etienne in a raving substack post, but unfortunately I was let down big time. Upon arrival, there was a long wait, which I normally don't mind. This one, I did mind, not due to the wait but rather what was witnessed during it. Multiple health code violations (speaking in American terms, I of course am unfamiliar with French health code), one of which being a bread knife dropped to the floor and promptly stomped on. It seems that the standard procedure for this kind of mishap is to swiftly wipe it off with a rag and continue slicing bread for the loyal patrons. Bread which was clearly being reused from tables that had not finished theirs. Needless to say, when it was my turn to be served bread, I did not indulge. It seems that hand washing has not become a regular practice here, as a member of the crew coughed into his hand and then proceded to plate a number of desserts bare handed. I witnessed the walk-in fridge be opened multiple times, and there was open buckets of salad on the floor with raw meat hanging above them. To put it simply, I was appalled. The cherry on top of it all was the abhorrent service by what seems to be the "mother" of the restaurant, who rushed my sister and I out the moment she decided we were done eating, and the extremely subpar food. We ordered the seafood pasta and grilled squid, both of which were under seasoned, greasy, and upsetting. I personally will not be returning.

Yelp
MAKE A RESERVATION! This restaurant is always full because it's very good. We asked our concierge to make a reservation for us, but for some reason it wasn't on their list. Very thankful as they allowed us to dine in as it was our last night in Marseille. We went a couple of nights ago but the restaurant was full. Food is very delicious. We had pizza half cheese and half anchovies. We tried the grilled beef as well. It's worth dining here. If I'm ever in Marseille again I would definitely come back to this restaurant!

Yelp
Visiting from New York and a friendly guy from Marseilles told us this was its best restaurant. Avoid it at all costs. It's like one of those places that is extremely rude and has no customer service because they know they're the sh*t - this is my favorite kind of restaurant - except the crucial distinction is that it sucks. No other city would consider this pizza - flavorless cheese and the worst anchovies I've had in my life showered in stale oregano. It's like something a teenager would make stoned. Our waitress was impatient and mean person who refused to take our order for anything other than pizza and told us to leave because she needed the table for someone else, even though this is clearly a place where people sit for hours and there was no one waiting. After we left my girlfriend broke down in tears. Do not be like the D-list French celebrities and politicians in the photos on the wall, do not eat here.

Yelp
MUST try - steak that is aged and cooked so well - it actually melts in your mouth. Recommended only if you like medium rare. If you're lucky, you can see a 6 foot slab of meat hanging in the walk-in fridge, get the eggplant and potato side to go with it. Their pizza is good but you can probably get similar ones elsewhere. If you're feeling adventurous you can get a pie with half anchovies and half cheese. Family run business, although busy, they made the effort to talk to us in English. Try to get there before 1pm for lunch

Yelp
Good pizza! We had anchovy and cheese pizzas, and both were so simple but oh so delicious. The shrimp pasta not so much. Also had fantastic tarte pomme with the best vanilla ice cream I've ever had. The hostess was friendly too.

Yelp
Odd place but lovable. Ambience: A small place that might be considered quaint. It has some charm but is fairly basic. A little tricky to track down. Service: Friendly but nothing special. Food: Specializes in a limited pizza choice but does it very well. Check out the photo of the menu - yes, that is the entire selection of dishes. I had the lamb kebobs which were a real surprise. Tender and flavorful and just the right amount. Even more of a surprise was the aperitif (digestif) I was given for free after the meal. It was three shots of fire-water 90-proof. Whoa. Price: Very good value. I'd go back next time I'm in town. It has charm but more importantly the food is very good.

Yelp
I came last year with my uncle and the place is exactly the same even the staff. Very intimate and close. AMAZING Pizza and the eggplant is a must! I don't even like eggplant and I love it! The rose wine is also a must. You will not be disappointed when you come here. Also you may get to see Mr. Etienne himself!

Yelp
2.5 out of 5 Went here for dinner Friday night and endured some of the worst service I have experienced. Our waitress literally just did not want to work. She got pissy when we asked for a menu. When we ordered a cheese pizza (there were only two flavors, cheese or anchovy), she hollered our order to the chef over the counter. So it's not like she had a hell of a lot of work to do really. Then we found some of her hair in one pizza. Then when we ordered dessert (the apple tart with ice cream that we saw at the table next to us) she brought as a rock hard clearly stale tart, two spoons, no ice cream. What on earth were we going to do with two spoons and no ice cream? When we asked for some, gesturing to our neighbors who had received their due boule, she sighed loudly. What!? Seriously? Like we were putting HER out for screwing up! Really though, it was so bad it was comical, so all in all a memorable experience. As for the pizza. Great salty anchovy-esque sauce, plenty of cheese. As for the crust, what wasn't completely charred to a crisp was nice. But the entire rim was blackened. Gross.

Yelp
The sautéed calamaretti were better than the Marseille-style pizza. The pizza was very good.... made with anchovies and mozzarella, but nowhere near as good as authentic Neopolitan pizza.

Yelp
In Marseille, avoiding the vieux port but trying not to break the bank with bouillabaisse, we stumbled on this gem. There are very few menu items, you obviously open with a pastis, try the pizza and savor the salad, but you will have no regrets.
