"A buzzy vibe and closely packed tables set the scene in this winstub, whose menu is the epitome of Alsace tradition (cockerel in Riesling, garnished sauerkraut, braised knuckle), albeit with a few more creative dishes, such as their delicate Alsace makis. Don’t miss the chance to sample one of the house specialties: melt-in-the-mouth pork cheeks slowly braised and simmered in a velvety pinot noir sauce – to die for!" - Michelin Inspector

"Restaurant Chez Yvonne is one of Strasbourg’s oldest and most famous winstubs (wine lounges)—and a less-expensive alternative to the city’s Michelin-starred Au Crocodile. The cozy eatery was a favorite of former French president Jacques Chirac, who often came here to discuss politics over wine and sauerkraut. Offering traditional Alsatian dishes, this is not a place for fussy eaters. Look forward to everything from liver dumplings, veal tongue, and braised pork knuckles to more standard fare like roasted chicken and fillet of beef, all doused in sauce and served with something sautéed."

We had an amazing dinner here. The food was very good and portions very generous. Staff were very friendly and accomodating. There is a good selection of different dishes and we chose typical Alsace food and were not disappointed. Although busy we did not feel rushed to finish our meals.

We had the most amazing lunch here. The food was delicious, generous servings and the staff were very friendly. There is a good selection of different dishes and the two we had were very nice. There is also a good range of wine options and an extensive carte. Both wines we choose were very nice. There are a lot of rooms and the place is deceptively large. We left feeling very content and recommend it highly.

This is my very first time of being so disappointed by a Michelin guide recommended restaurant. We have ordered snails, pork knuckle, calf head and rooster. The taste of snails was okay, but the presentation really surprised me. Calf head and pork knuckle both had strong smells, especially the skin part. The chef could have pretreated the skin by flame or heat to remove that, then the overall taste would be way better. Rooster was tough and plain.

We came here with high expectations, and we were excited! This restaurant is located in a beautiful old building, and also the interior is kept in this charming, cozy style. The food was traditionally Alsatian and exceptionally well prepared. The products for the starters were of high quality and well-tasting. For our main courses, we were served fish that was on-point and an Alsatian coq au vin that was perfectly tender and juicy. Finally, we finished our dinner with a large piece of a home-made Tarte. The service was multi-lingual and very friendly, prices were affordable. We can only highly recommend this place.

Google
We had a friendly greeting and were escorted to our table on the 3rd floor. The building very interesting, amazingly well preserved. Our server ( I wish I recalled his name) was fantastic, he provided great recommendations for food and wine and everything was absolutely perfect! I would highly recommend and can’t wait to come back!

Google
The place has a very local, authentic vibe and the service is exceptional. The food is good, however it wasn't at the same level as other Michelin restaurants in France. We tried the duck foie gras starter, the young rooster with mushrooms and the vegetarian cottage cheese with potatoes. While the meaty options were good, the vegetarian main felt very average.

Google
Great place. All the dishes are typical for the region, but really well executed. The service was really good. The whole place has a very traditional look.

Google
It might just be us, but we didn’t really find the traditional Alsatian food any good. I gave the restaurant 3 stars, because the atmosphere was beautiful, the manager lady was incredibly nice, and the Apple strudel was delicious. The rest of the dishes we tried were simply basic :( You just expect more from the restaurant on the Micheline guide. You can still give it a try tho :)

Yelp
We came in early before the hustle and were grateful to have a table. We were very disappointed in the service malheureusement. The waiter was absolutely rude. We could NOT order a appetizers, salads, alcohol. It was simply not enough. I proceeded to watch how he and the host managed this restaurant. Not many were welcomed. They both mocked the other staff as well. I am 100% french and it's restaurants like this that people find rude in the french. This is when I'm embarrassed to be french mes chers amies. Will be back to Strasbourg but not at Chez Yvonne.

Yelp
Just drove in town and was hungry for a hearty meal. The food and service was promptly and good. Portions are great.

Yelp
We had an enjoyable dinner here during the Christmas Market. The restaurant itself i picture-perfect -- wood- paneled, traditional Alsatian decor. The service is friendly and welcoming. The food was good, tasty. My partner had a dinner of sausage and sauerkraut, and I had the duck confit. While the sauerkraut was amazing, the meats were more in the good range, the flavors mild. During the Market, they let you know in advance that there are two seatings --6:30 and 8:30, with dinner limited to one hour, 45 minutes. That keeps things moving at a good clip, and they seat everyone at once so they are running a little tight. And they're serious -- at 1 hour, 45, we heard a neighboring table say, "We need to go," and the server replied, "Yes, you do." Well, we had been warned. Again, they are very up front about this policy.

Yelp
Two local friends recommended Chez Yvonne for traditional Alsacian food, so we had to come here. The restaurant is super cute, with its traditional Alsatian decor. We got Choucroute Garnie and Coq au Riesling; both were delicious. Service was great as well. The staff helped us pick the traditional dishes and was very kind in making sure that we were comfortable during our meal. I felt like I was invited to a local Alsatian family home!

M B.

Yelp
The food was good but the service was terrible. Even though we were polite, rather quiet and appropriately dressed our waiter was beyond rude. He ruined our experience. The rest of the staff seemed ok but they seemed to not really care about their restaurant and appeared to be just going through the motions. If you want to be treated poorly and made to feel bad go here. If not, there are many other options for delicious food and agreeable staff.

Rachel L.

Yelp
My server was great. Loved the Burgundy wine the best. Even over the Pinot noir. Also loved the escargot, the bacon pie, and the food gras on the regular menu (not the specialty menu). Great price for Michelin star!

H P.

Yelp
Typical Alsatian food served in a very traditional setting. Dark wood, dark and cozy downstairs and a brighter upstairs with windows overlooking the pedestrian street below. The service was very professional and helpful in selecting our choices. We opened with an onion and bacon tart that was exquisite. They have a way with tart crusts. Followed by sausage and sauerkraut for me, the beef stew special for my husband. Delicious, large portions and incredibly tasty.

Thomas S.

Yelp
The foot is very good. But seating was bad, even though we booked in advance, we got a table next to the exit (in wintertime). After discussions, we got a table at an expected place (just a normal table, why not in the first place?). We got not served right away, even though guests came after us served first ( same drinks). This all reduces the stars to 2.

Brendan K.

Yelp
Try the young rooster and Spätzle. Excellent. The beef pot roast was bland and akin to what my wife prepares in her crockpot. Boring and not that flavorful. They have a children's menu, which is nice, but the sausage were not that good. Vienna beef Hot Dogs would be better. The fried potatoes and side dishes were good, as was the dessert. Service was decent, but felt like perfunctionary touristy place it is.

Denni H.

Yelp
Visited this quaint restuarant for lunch opening day of the Christmas market. Reservations a must. Staff very friendly, some English spoken. Limited options if you aren't a huge meat lover. We split fois gras appetizer. Small, however exceptional flavor. Sauerkraut very tasty! Would I rush back? Probably not because of limited selection for myself not being a huge meat lover, however everyone in my party enjoyed their meal. Potatoes great! A bit on the pricey side for lunch.

Dennis K.

Yelp
Had reservations made by our hotel concierge. We were given menus in German and English. Halfway through our dinner, a French couple sat at the next table and were given a chalkboard with the chef specials. As we left, we saw the specials on a board in the window and regretted being treated differently as we are not French but would have selected from the daily specials menu. Have been to France 14 times and speak survival French so we resent discrimination in treatment.

Rocio D.

Yelp
We were so lucky to find this place! The pork knuckle with sauerkraut was exceptional! We also tried the smoked sausage. Outstanding too! Customer services is really good. We spoke broken french and luckily they spoke perfect English. Super friendly and relax.

Brian B.

Yelp
Wonderful. Our best meal in Strasbourg. The Foie Gras and Spice Cake were amazing, but the Blood Sausage entree I had sealed my lover affair with this terrifyingly wonderful dish. My wife had the Chocroute Garnie and was thrilled with it. After a week of wonderful meals in Paris we were still astounded by the meals we had in Strasbourg and Chez Yvonne was the best of them.

Tamar K.

Yelp
It's not really a French restaurant, and it's a little hard to find. It's mostly German food, although the foie gras app was outstanding. The plates were very good and some were beautiful. Communication wasn't perfect, but OK. recommended place by the hotel and several books.

Billy D.

Yelp
Welcome to the motherload of Alsace cuisine. This place is truly an incredible dining experience and not to be missed when in Strasbourg. Highlights: the pike perch + sauerkraut is out of this world; the duck fat brulee is unique; escargot is nice also. Desserts are good too. Skip the duck with the chorizo - the sauce just doesn't fit. Restaurant is cozy and the atmosphere makes you feel like you've been transported back a hundred years in the coziest Alsace way possible. The bathroom is pretty interesting also, so don't miss that. Service is great and very polite even when you are speaking broken french. Make reservations if you can, but try anyways if you didn't. It's possible to get a table for 2 - especially if you go in later - they stop serving dinner at 12.

Yelp
Spend Christmas in my home town Strasbourg, at at Chez Yvonne, superbe Alsacian food, Old style decor, a great wine list. Jaret de Porc, Zandre a la Choucroute, Coq au Vin all top notch, service was good, not like back in the States, but hey its France.. Great place in a great neigborood

david w.

Yelp
Three and a half to four stars is about right. A few hundred feet from the cathedral, but quiet and away from the madding crowd, traditional in feeling and cuisine, which is Alsatian, pur et dur. Neighbors had the jarret du porc, we did tomato carpaccio (tomatoes both green and ripe with basel, mozarella and a mustard vinaigrette, excellent), coq au rieśling with spaezele (good, and filling), and quaíl stuffed with fois gras (superb). Dessert: baba au rhum (ho hum). Wine list: centers on Alsatian bottles ať €25+ but we did a half bottle pichet ať €14.50. Total fór two: €73. Only sour note: The server when she handed us the bill took it on herself to tell us that "the tip is not included". This in a country where service, by law, is always included in menu prices.

Jill T.

Yelp
The perfect quaint Alsacian restaurant. The spaetzle was life changing - the coq au vin was alright. The schlachterplatte was AMAZING. Pork knuckle was great. Escargot was incredible. Boozy desserts are boozy as hell. Great wine selection. The menu is in French, German, and English. The staff knows enough English to get by if you don't know any French. I went twice in a 1-week trip because it was THAT good.

Daniel K.

Yelp
Excellent Alsatian style food and good wine. Servers were friendly. Nice wine list with Ostertag bottles and others. Good quality Rieslings by the glass too. The smoked sausage with potato salad was delicious. Since this place is so famous I hesitated to go at first thinking it might be touristy, but it's not touristy at all just a solid Alsatian style restaurant.

Susan L.

Yelp
Very good! We had the Coqavin and the pork Knuckle!! Very fast service and so quaint!

Yelp
Man oh man, I wish I would have written this review on the night of our visit. It would have been much more detailed. But alas, the sands of time and a few glasses of wine have dulled my memories. But the moral of the story is the same: this place is pretty great! It was our last night in Strasbourg, and after 4 days of near constant walking and exploring we wanted to find a good restaurant without having to really SEARCH for it (not having a smart phone is quite the adjustment). The concierge at the hotel suggest Chez Yvonne, and it was a wise choice. We were able to enjoy a bottle of wine, an appetizer, two entrees and dessert for about $120 USD. Really, considering the quality of the food and the exchange rate, I was more than happy with that. We started the meal with escargot, which is quite possibly my favorite food of all time. This did not disappoint, rich and buttery, perfectly cooked. For entrees the significant other enjoyed the back of stuffed piglet while I had the roasted duck thigh. Both were fantastic! And for dinner we shared crème brûlée. Admittedly, this isn't my favorite dessert, but I thought it was alright. Overall, everything we ate was expertly prepared. The service was incredibly friendly and efficient. It was nice that they spoke great English. When traveling abroad I try and communicate in the language as much as possible, but by this point I was just exhausted and it was nice to not have to struggle. I would say that Chez Yvonne is representative of Strasbourg as a whole: equal parts quaint and classy, and definitely worth the trip.

Yelp
Hmmm...so the food here is really good. Not five stars because we were greeted by a somewhat unfriendly host. Maybe they just don't like Americans? Anyway... Friend and I did a road trip to Strasbourg and she was super excited about this place. The interior is charming--it's all wooden floors, wooden tables, wooden chairs, and checkered tablecloths, and the decor really does take you back in time. It FEELS like old Europe. We shared a foie gras appetizer, which was excellent and paired well with the Gewürztraminer wine flight I had. The bread was warm and served in a little basket with a lid. Me being gluttonously greedy, I ordered the foie gras main course. It was SO good, but I was feeling sick at this point because I had had too much rich food. The side of sweet whipped yams was also really good, but I threw in the towel halfway through. My friend ordered the beef tongue, and when it came out, she just stared at it and started laughing. Why? It looked EXACTLY like how a tongue would look. As in, it was an entire tongue, in one piece, and you could see where it was chopped off, and it was pink. You could count the individual taste buds if you wanted to. I laughed at her, but she ate the whole thing and claimed it was delicious (once you got over "it looks exactly like a tongue" part). Really charming restaurant, and I do miss places like this. I would recommend a visit to anyone visiting Strasbourg.

Yelp
The best place for Alsatian food in Strasbourg, as far as I can tell. I've eaten here twice and thought it was fantastic both times. Whenever I've strayed, I've been ripped off by bad service and overpriced, mediocre food. (Strasbourg does not have a good reputation as a food town). Luckily, Chez Yvonne is the exception. While it's not cheap, the quality and quantity of the food is fair for the price. The foie gras is a must, of course - the version here is perfect. I also enjoyed the onion tart, and my husband the Puff pastry stuffed with Munster cheese. The sauerkraut is nothing like the terrible canned stuff most Americans are used to, and it's differently flavored from German sauerkraut as well. Absolutely fantastic. The interior is all cozy kitsch in a Renissance-era house. Great for winter! The service is friendly, helpful, and speaks English if necessary.

Jim S.

Yelp
This place was recommended by our guide and her recommendation was spot on. We started with the foie gras appetizer (which, thankfully, we split). It was outstanding. My wife ordered a special of the day, a rabbit girdle with chanterelles and it was perfectly prepared. Because it is such an Alsatian dish, I tried the pike-perch with sauerkraut. Again, the fish was perfectly prepared and the kraut was not too overwhelming for this very mild fish. We paired it with a 1/2 liter of dry Riesling, which was just perfect. My wife ordered a plum dessert which she described as just like her (Eastern European) grammy used to make, e.g., not too sweet. Our service was outstanding. The young person who greeted and seated us was also our waitress. Thankfully for us, her English was outstanding and she was pleasant and patient with us throughout. Highly recommended for typical Alsatian food!

Stacey W.

Yelp
On our first night on Strasbourg, we arrived quite late. We checked into our amazing hotel (Le Bouclier d'Or - review to follow) and asked if there were any restaurants still open. They made us reservations at Chez Yvonne and we walked right over. It was a little hard to find, but it's only a block or two from the Cathedral. We had a great dinner here. It's a very typical Alsace-style restaurant with both French and German selections. We started with the homemade Foie Gras and it was exceptional. My husband had filet, and I had the Coq au Vin with spaetzle - also wonderful. Our was a great stay to our trip, and I highly recommend dining here.

Alexandre P.

Yelp
Barely pleasant team. Poor service. Had to chase all the time. Food average. Not cheap enough for what you eat. Owner is no longer alive so may be that's why they don't care. Basically not worth going at all.

Mark H.

Yelp
I heard about this place from both a friend and the NY Times, so I made a reservation on a busy Friday night. On a cute small street by the cathedral, it's a warm inviting place (it was actually quite warm inside on this summer night...) with wood paneling and beams and old-school charisma. I had a pitcher of (cold) white Alsatian wine, which really hit the spot. It was a good way to start the evening... This 'winstub' is comfy and cozy, like food in Strasbourg. I made sure to come in on an empty stomach, and I had some escargots à l'alsacienne to start, followed by maennerstoltz (smoked sausage) with lots and lots of choucroute. The sauerkraut was very finely shredded, strong and delicate at the same time. Would you believe there was room for a moelleux au chocolat? Can't *wait* to come back here again! This food screams for cold weather, though...

Samantha H.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised at how delicious it was. Fabulous smoked salmon and onion tart! The beef steak was a bit over cooked, nothing to rave about. The potatoes were out of this world! We ended the dinner with a plum pie which was an unexpected treat. Excellent service. Warm atmosphere. Lots of locals and regulars. Highly recommend.

Shawn L.

Yelp
Food was great, typical Alsacian cuisine, service was efficient but I found it a bit lacking in warmth ie no recommendations and menu was just placed on the table instead of being handed to us.

Tim M.

Yelp
This place was recommended to us by two brothers who run an antique store in town. We stuck with the classics - my wife had steak tartare, my son got chicken Coq au Vin, and I had choucroute garnie. All three dishes were excellent. As others have said this place is well located, so it's a good stop for someone visiting Strasbourg

Joe J.

Yelp
Excellent Alsace food experience. Restaurant was recommended to me by a work colleague that lives about 30 minutes away and I was not disappointed. I avoided eating lunch so I could have a large dinner. I had two appetizers; the fois gras (small order) and escargots (6 pieces) followed by the pork knuckle with sauerkraut. I asked for local wines to pair and they made excellent choices for me. My French language skills are very poor so I was glad they switched to and spoke very good English. Highly recommend

Lisa F.

Yelp
Was doing a short 3 night trip to Strasbourg so checked Yelp for where to eat and it lead me here. I heard that Alsatian food was on the culinary checklist for this town so we headed to Chez Yvonne. Although my husband was not keen on it, I convinced him to order the Choucroute Garnie platter that had a little bit of everything served on top of, what else, sauerkraut. I ordered the stuffed piglet that came with a side of really yummy crispy cast iron potatoes and a little salad. The portions were pretty generous as we were forcing ourselves to finish as much of the food as possible at the end. The choucroute probably isn't something we ever order since boiled pork sausage, bacon and other pork parts isn't all that exciting but it was definitely worth a try and there wasn't anything bad about the dish but flavors get a little boring after awhile so keep that jar of mustard in reach. For our daughter, we got the spaetzle. It was really buttery and I don't think I would ever want to eat that on its own but there wasn't much else we thought she would like. I'm not really familiar with this dish and so I discovered that once it cools off it tastes even less appetizing and dry. Overall, the service was professional and polite. Although they did give us a raised eye brow for our overactive toddler and I think intentionally seated us in the side room --which suited us. There is also a 2nd floor with ample seating. They have photos along the staircase of famous dignitaries and celebs who have eaten in the restaurant. I really loved the vintage German style of the restaurant and certainly gives you a feel for the centuries old heritage of Strasbourg.

Chris W.

Yelp
The restaurant looks like a converted 3 floor townhouse. It has gemütlichkeit in abundance: very cozy and comfortable. We came for lunch and thought the food was a little overpriced and the quantities a little small.

John C.

Yelp
I ate here several weeks ago because its in a cute little alleyway near the cathedral. I thought it would be nice to check the place out for some authentic Alsatian cuisine, although I suspected it would be a bit pricey given its proximity to the cathedral. I was right. The food was good - not

Mimi B.

Yelp
We arrived with no reservation and were seated promptly up stairs, evidently where non-reserving guests are taken. The stairs are treacherous but it was a cozy, warm space. It felt more German than French and the food was a mixture of the two cultures. Service was expert, friendly, and immediate. It was a lovely intimate dinner in spite of being crowded in closely. Escargots, tarte l'ongion, salade, fillet du boeuf - all excellent with a great hearty Bordeaux. Creme brûlée we shared. All only 70 euro.

Kyden C.

Yelp
Fantastic local food (Classic Alsace), warm atmosphere in the heart of old town. Great!! Try the foie gras creme brûlée, or the perfect tarte d'onion!
