The Best New Restaurants in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"After cooking in Panama City, Paris, and New York, Adolfo Garcia III has returned to his native New Orleans and opened Chi Chi’s Chicken and Beer, an impossibly cool Freret Street shop serving a chaotic mashup of Korean fried chicken and Japanese sushi sandos. The menu focuses on four main categories: Korean chicken wings, fried chicken sandwiches, onigirazu (sushi sandwiches), and kakigōri (Japanese shaved ice), served alongside simple sides, three-liter towers of beer, and soju in a bustling, compact space adorned with a playful cartoon aesthetic." - Clair Lorell

New Orleans’ Best Chicken Wings | Eater New Orleans

"Chi Chi’s Chicken and Beer is Freret Street’s coolest new hangout, a playful hub for Korean chicken wings, fried chicken sandwiches, onigirazu (sushi sandwiches), and kakigōri (Japanese shaved ice). For the wings, Garcia marinates the chicken for 24 hours in a blend of Korean rice wine, peanut oil, soy sauce, and a spice blend. They get an initial dredge of rice flour and all-purpose flour and a first fry, followed by a velveting technique with an ice-cold batter, then a second fry. The wings get sauced with soy garlic or gochujang (or customers can order a mix), and come with a side of tangy pickled daikon, as is tradition." - Beth D’Addono

My partner and I came for a special collaboration they were doing with our favorite food truck (Southerns). It was our first time visiting, we will definitely be back. Great spot for happy hour, date night or a quick bite. The inside is a bit small but clean and bright with fun and vibrant decor. Centrally located on freret street near other bars and restaurants. Delicious food, service was quick, friendly and knowledgeable (and able to accommodate my partners gluten allergy)

Google
Charming Korean BBQ chicken spot on Freret. We finally had the chance to check it out, and despite its small size, we had a great experience. The crispy rice tuna appetizer, Korean Fried Chicken Sandwiches, and Chicken Onigiri were all delicious. To top it off, the shaved ice cream dessert was an unexpected but delightful highlight!

Google
We tried Chi Chi’s for the first time last week after seeing several IG influencers rave about the spot for months. It’s definitely lived up to our expectations! The Korean fried chicken was hot and flavorful with a nice crisp to them. The onigirazu sandwich had a juicy piece of chicken thigh slathered in gochujang sauce that was very delicious. The pickles in the onigirazu tasted a bit aged but I kind of liked the extra depth of flavor. We also tried their fried shrimp bao special and it was slightly crispy on the outside but steamy and soft on the inside, my only complain was that there were only two in an order. Lastly, the mango shaved ice was light and not too sweet with a lot of rich mango flavor coming through. Would definitely recommend this spot and we plan to be back soon!

Fresh, delicious sushi and top-notch service. Everything was beautifully presented and full of flavor. Highly recommend! MUST try mango kakigori dessert was 1000/10

Google
This place is the real deal. We went in knowing the hype was strong, and we were still blown away. It was busy even for early dinner, but the service was still fast and friendly. The food was truly phenomenal. We were able to try the wings, chicken sandwich, and veggie sandwich, and all of them were delicious. The chicken is not as spicy as I was expecting, but the flavor was still very good. We will definitely be back.

Google
Tried ChiChi’s after seeing a bunch of promotional flyers on campus, and it delivered! I had never heard of a sushi sandwich before, but it was great! I want to go back and try another flavor, and I probably will, since now all of my friends want to eat here too. The fries and chicken sandwich were also very very good! So glad we have this new spot uptown!

Google
Delicious! Can't wait to go back and try more things. We had the wings (both sauces), KFC oni sandwich, cucumber salad, and shaved ice desert. We love it all! Everything had a great spice level.

Google
Best wings I’ve had in a minute. Elevated comfort food. Casual enough for weekday dinner but we also ate here for a special Valentine’s Day meal. Great for any occasion

Yelp
A cute little shop on Freret, the location is perfect for college kids. It's casual and seems to be pretty popular too! We tried their KFC sandwich ($13), which was delish! It's got a tiny kick from the Korean gochujang to coat/season their fried chicken, but it's not that hot. Gochujang has a unique flavor profile, so make sure you like it before trying this sandwich! The portion for the sandwich is fair, but I wish it had come with a side. You can buy sides separately, but I felt like they could have included some fries or something since it's $13. It was good, but I'd like to try a different menu item the next time I swing by. We also tried their wings. We got soy garlic and gochujang flavored wings (6 pieces for $12). The soy garlic wings are phenomenal! I would order these again for sure. SO flavorful and perfectly fried. The best out of the two types of wings! My only complaint is the price. It's $2 per piece and it doesn't come with any extras - that's a little pricy if you ask me. The food is prepared well and you won't be disappointed here. I recommend you to go check this place out and definitely try the soy garlic wings!!!

Yelp
Cute Korean BBQ chicken restaurant on Freret. Finally paid this place a visit. Although it's quite a small restaurant they make up for it with their dedicated staff, unique menu and cool vibe. We loved the crispy rice tuna appetizer, the Korean Fried Chicken Sandwiches and the Chicken Onigiri. Also the shaved ice cream desert was a surprising highlight to finish off our meal!

Yelp
I had heard about this place for a while and was excited to give it a try, and oh boy I was not disappointed at all! We had the Southern Fried Chicken Sandwich and the KFC (Korean Fried Chicken) Sandwich, fries and kimchi coleslaw. All were excellent, so if you're short on time close this and go. But if you have a minute, here are some of my thoughts. I was uptown for an event and decided to order takeout. However, the spouse didn't see my text message that I was ready to order so I ended up going to the place to order (I promise this is relevant). It was not very crowded (it was early on a Saturday evening). I was greeted as soon as I walked in the door and told them I wanted to place a takeout order and they took me to the bar where I ordered. Since I expected a longish wait, I decided to get a beer while I waited. The wait was less time than it took me to finish a beer, which was a really pleasant surprise. I left and went home, where I had to force myself to not stop and eat everything because it smelled so good. One of the most important things I was concerned about was how it would travel, but that did not matter at all (about 20 minutes). Everything still tasted very fresh. I had the Southern Fried Chicken Sandwich. It was quite good and I would have been very happy with it had I not tried the KFC sandwich. It was divine. Kinda sweet, kinda spicy, and all delicious. I'm not trying to disparage the other sandwich, this was just so good. The southern sandwich was perfectly fried and seasoned and I would have called it one of the best chicken sandwiches I have had if I had stopped there. If spicy is not your thing, go with this. If you'd rather have spicy, go with the KFC. You cannot go wrong. The sides were great, nice seasoning on the fries (I was too full to try the coleslaw but assured that it was delicious). The staff was super friendly and attentive, but honestly I didn't have enough time to enjoy the hospitality because the service was so fast. If I have anything slightly negative to say, it's that for a place with "beer" in the name, the beer selection was really limited. But it was good beer, so that's not a big deal. This was an amazing experience and I can't wait to go back

Yelp
I'll start by saying my rating is mostly based on the service and hospitality. The server fielded my sister's questions and checked on us at all the right times. They also surprised my nephew with a kakigori (shaved ice) for his birthday. It even had a candle! They also gave him stickers. We lucked up and ended up here during happy hour. We didn't partake in the 5.00 beer specials, but we took advantage of the free side with every order of wings. An order of wings is 12.00, so getting a free side made the price point feel like a good deal. I got kimchi fried rice. I liked the crunchy bits on top more than anything. My sister got fries. They kids really liked them. Don't expect and extensive menu. It's a one pager! There are two wing flavors: soy garlic and gochujang. My sister said the soy garlic was a 4 out of 5. I thought they were okay. Good crisp, but not a lot of soy flavor and no sauce. My mom ate every bite of her KFC sandwich, so I take that as a stamp of approval. The space is small, with a street facing window, so it's good for people watching and scoping out your next move. They were playing old school music (which may not match the vibes, but I liked it). Overall, a cute little place, but I would probably only go during happy hour. I wish they had more chicken and beer options given the name.

Yelp
I decided to try this place with my foodie nephew and we both enjoyed our meal. The service was great here. I had an espresso martini and that was really good. The chicken wings were the best part of our meal. They were really tasty. The chicken sandwich was also great. I was getting pretty full so I didn't get to try the kimchi rice but my nephew really enjoyed it. I didn't really enjoy the sushi sando. It was too much rice and not enough meat. In pics it looks like the rice and meat portions are more equal but in reality the meat was two strips of chicken (about the size of chicken strips on a fajita) and about 4xs as much rice. We also got the strawberries and cream Kakigori and that was ok.

Yelp
OMG! The soy garlic wings were some of the best flavored wings that I have ever tasted in my life. If you want a kick of hotness and flavor, the Gochujang wings are for you! I adore the kimchi fried rice. I could have had my own bowl, but had to share it. I Will be back to try the sushi sando.

Yelp
Came on a Friday night and it was packed!! Small space, so we had an hour wait to sit at the bar. Which was fine, we got a drink across the street and they just called us when they had a spot open. The crispy rice with tuna and cucumber salad were both pretty good but we added soy sauce to both. I wish they would've come with their own sauces that had more flavor, but still very yummy. Now the wings were amazing! I'm not usually a wing girlie, but the batter and fry on these were so good. We got the soy glaze and I loved it. The service was attentive once we sat down. We will be back!

Yelp
Tucked in between the Bagel shop and a coffeehouse it's easy to miss, but you should definitely check this place out if you like Korean style wings. Staff is friendly. They have a few kinds of soju and beers available. We ordered the 12 piece wings (shoyu and kochujang mix), KFC sandwich, cucumber, and friend rice. Everything was good. The wings were definitely on par with Korean style wings I used to eat while living in Honolulu. KFC sandwich was really good. Cucumber salad was ok - I wish I'd ordered the daikon instead. The fried rice was ok. Next time I'll probably just stick with the wings and KFC sandwich. Also, not sure why but the chairs we sat on slid on the ground... like literally slid. I think it's the wooden chair legs on the glossy painted concrete ground.

Yelp
We finally got to try this new Korean chicken and beer (or 치맥) spot the other day and there were definitely a lot of highs and lows. First off, I think they do a really great job of making sure the wings are crunchy and well-seasoned and the gochujang wings in particular made us very happy. That being said, I think they're missing one extra special ingredient to take the soy garlic wings to the next level. I also really enjoyed the kimchi fried rice but I think the rice should have been fried a little bit longer so that the crunch comes from the rice itself and is not reliant on the crispy onions thrown on top. That said, I appreciate the Korean and Japanese flavors infused into the dish with the chef taking a few liberties at reinterpreting the classic Korean dish in his own way. As far as additional menu items go, the salmon sushi sando was tasty but nothing to write home about and the KFC sandwich was hearty but lacking the flavor that was evident in the gochujang wings. We also weren't too impressed with the portion sizes, given the price point. I usually don't comment on the prices at all but charging $12 for a tiny cart of fried rice seems a bit unreasonable. I understand that operating a business on Freret street is expensive, but I think that ChiChis could do a better job at distinguishing between the sides and the mains--while also maybe throwing in a bit extra. Hopefully this review helps them improve upon a few things in the future, I'm happy to see more Korean spots in NOLA and I look forward to their success and continued improvement. I also love the vibes and street noise that came with this dining experience, we sat outside with our pupper and got to take in all the sights and sounds as the sun began to set ~

Yelp
There's so little Korean food representation in Nola, and even the traditional restaraunt in Metairie was not up to my standards. I don't know exactly how traditional this spot is, but I at least had a better experience here than I did there. I tried 4 items at the bar. The weakest was the cucumber salad. It did not impress me at all and was the only bad thing. They should take some pointers from the guy on TikTok. And make it spicy and remove the crunchy part of the salad. The radishes were solid and delicious. Nothing else to say. I wish they were free though. I guess we ARE uptown... The fried chicken sushi sandwich was okay. It was very small for the price. The actual Korean chicken sandwich was alright. I probably wouldn't order it again. It had too much slaw. I would also advertise it as a slider as it was tiny. I think they should add some of those radishes to the sandwich to fix it personally. One thing I realized is that everything seems very transient. The place just opened so I expect it will get better. Everything used temporary plates and the like. The sushi sandwich was wrapped in plastic wrap and everything was disposable. Presentation of things could be waaaay better. Servers were great and helpful. This place was packed and they still were great. The space is cute and they made the most of the limited space they have. A personal pet peeve of mine are service fees. I think of myself as an alright tipper, better than average people, but whenever I see anything resembling a service fee my desire to tip goes way down. This place has a flat 3.5% service fee which isn't the worst, but again, a pet peeve.

Yelp
Very nice servers, cute decor but tiny (though that's part of the charm). Fried chicken was great and I want to come back and pair it with a boot of beer when I don't have to drive after!
google avatar

Theresa K.

Yelp
They just opened when I visited, so I think they were still trying to work out the kinks. I was immediately greeted when I walked through the door. I ordered the wings and cucumbers. The wings were not good, which I was surprised. I thought they would've had more of a spice to them. Now they they've been opened for a little bit longer I will go back and try their food. Also, try something else on the menu.
google avatar

Brandon P.

Yelp
Decent KFC style wings/Sando's in Nola. Obviously not the best I've had compared to what you get in Seoul but for Nola it will do. Both wings flavors are great although I'm a big gochujang fan so this is my favorite. The KFC sandwich has been my go to. Also nice to see that they have a N/A beer option for those who wish to enjoy their wings with a beer but the non alcoholic route. They also have these Japanese shaved ice called Kakigori, big fan!
google avatar

Emily V.

Yelp
I loved the vibe of Chi Chi's. My boyfriend and I went on a Thursday and it was packed and like a party. We got a mix of both of the chicken wings and we couldn't decide which one we liked more. We also got the spicy tuna cucumber sando which I really enjoyed. My favorite though was the kimchi fried rice which had some nice crispy bits on the top. I would definitely go back and try some other things.
google avatar

Uriia H.

Yelp
I wanted to love this place. Tried it out with a friend one afternoon. It's very small and cramped inside. I think there are too many tables squeezed into such a small space. The wings had good flavor but mine weren't as crispy as I thought they would be. The sides are WAYYY overpriced. Portion sizes for fries and kimchi rice were very tiny in comparison to the price. Don't think this place will be in my lunch rotation.

Tina C.

Yelp
Went here today! Small space but the interior is cute with a self seating concept. With a limited non alcoholic drink menu I was skeptical but i was wrong. Both sandwiches were good with great flavor and our service was good. My only criticism is the sandwiches are a bit on the pricey end given the size and the wings if you order them are about 2 dollars per wing but other than that factor it was good
google avatar

Tiffany F.

Yelp
Ahhhh!! This place made my taste buds have a party in my mouth!!! The food was great and fresh, I ordered the salmon cucumber sushi sandwich with no sesame seeds for $14 and the everything was soooo fresh and flavorful. The seaweed wrap was so fresh and soft. My husband ordered the Southern Fried Chicken sandwich for $12 and he loved it! The best thing was the Saracha Tabasco hot sauce that took everything to ANOTHER LEVEL. We had the fries and I thought $6 was over priced for a handful of fries. But will be back!
google avatar

Ashley V.

Yelp
Ehhh, I really wanted to like this place but it just overall felt like another trendy, overpriced place. Nothing about it was authentic Korean/Japanese. This is all the food we got for $50 which is quite ridiculous. The fried chicken was crispy and decently seasoned. The KFC "sushi sando" was also decent but TINY. Decided not to get the tuna sushi sando because we were warned that it was just canned tuna... I would possibly come back to try the shaved ice but that's it.

Emorie W.

Yelp
This place is amazing!!!!! We ordered the wings, the KFC sandwich, and southern chicken sand which. Service and ambiance is wonderful.
google avatar

Andy W.

Yelp
Phenomenal hole-in-the-wall local stop. Chi Chi's Incredible chicken, lively atmosphere, friendly service, and phenomenal beer selection makes it tough to top. Fill up here before grabbing a nightcap at Cure across the street!
google avatar

Sophia N.

Yelp
Everything was delicious!! Service was great. Cute little spot. Will def be going back.
google avatar

Diana T.

Yelp
The idea is great, but fell short when executed. It's a fun place to hang--it tries to have the Korean dive bar feel. Where I sat, my not-so-sturdy chair kept sliding around as the floor is slanted. Easily fixable, moving on. Growing up eating KFC in NYC, this was not it for me. Maybe because it was busy, my wings were soggy, I forced myself to eat a few. The sauces were mild, I wish they offered a really spicy option. The soy garlic was nice though. I was disappointed that radishes weren't given with them with that price point, which is a staple. The kakigori was flavorless and quite petite. Will try again in a few months to give them time to make some much needed tweaks and rewrite the review!

Jay M.

Yelp
Amazing wings, sushi sammys, etc. We had a great experience here, great service, and a great atmosphere.

Jasmine A.

Yelp
Heads up, the spicy tuna sando isn't raw, sushi grade tuna. It's ya mama's tuna salad wrapped in rice and seaweed for $14+. How do yall sleep at night?

Estela L.

Yelp
Cucumber salad was excellent. Little Spicy but not overwhelming. The KFC sandwich, combo wings and kimchi fried rice were all very good. Great addition to Freret!
google avatar

Amanda N.

Yelp
I was excited to hear we had a new Korean Fried Chicken place opening in Nola but I'm pretty disappointed on how mediocre this place ended up being. The food was just okay in terms of rating. Way too much green onions in the kimchi fried rice and overcompensating for "Korean" inspired flavors. Service was okay as well, servers definitely trying to adjust to the busyness of dinner rush I'm not gonna fault them for trying their best in that chaotic environment. Parking and seating very limited as well, would not go here for friend groups bigger than 4. For the environment, it was so loud that I could barely hear myself think lol let alone my partner sitting across from me. Overall, it was an okay trip to go here once but would not come back again to dine.

Sophie E.

Yelp
Delicious and authentic Korean wings! Super cute vibe here. The staff are friendly and helpful, we had a great weeknight date here. Will return!

Yelp
10/10. Korean fried chicken items cooked to perfection by Chef Adolfo. Very affordable and high quality. The kokigori dessert was amazing. We will definitely back!

Samson D.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I thought Chi Chi's was amazing. The restaurant had a great feel to it. We had both flavors of the wings and they tasted phenomenal. The crisp could have been crunchier but that's besides the point. We also had the crunchy rice topped with tuna and that too was so good. Great flavor. Lastly the Asahi is cold, what more could you ask for. We're excited to try it again next time we come.

Nancy F.

Yelp
Had the KFC (Korean Fried Chicken). Very flavorful. The radish was really good too. Definitely a multi napkin meal which speaks to the moistness. Very small and tends to be noisy. Next time I'd prefer sitting outside at a sidewalk table. Gonna try again to taste other foods on the menu.

Hayden S.

Yelp
The food was fantastic, I had the soy garlic wings and the KFC sandwich. The crunch is just perfect and the flavors are hard to beat. We wanted more so we got the kimchi fried rice and it did not disappoint! The service was impeccable! Quick and easy, and the staff is incredibly friendly. The atmosphere in this place is electric! Everyone in the restaurant smiling and having a good time. A great spot to gather with friends and forget about your daily patterns for a bit. Seems as if they are creating a culture that is welcoming to everyone and anyone! Highly recommend!

Andrea R.

Yelp
I was so excited to go to this place after seeing the long lines on the first day. But the experience was less than meh. The decor looked like they didn't even try. The wings didn't look like the pictures and tasted like nothing special. The rice was ok. Big disappointment.
