I have not been back to this space since it was Zed451. This spot acutely holds some additional meaning for me as I had my rehearsal dinner here when it was Zed451. So, I was wondering how the space would be different.
I went on a late Sunday afternoon in July with my wife, for their Summer Sunday series. This is where they open up their rooftop for wine, cocktails and limited food. I was surprised to find that rooftop was covered by a large pergola with skylights. While I would have liked a view of the surrounding buildings, I enjoyed the shade as it was a hot summer day. This made made for a great atmosphere where I felt I could easily relax (the wine helped too). While I was there was a dj was playing music. First, and foremost, I enjoyed the wine. You need to know they only carry their brand of wine. I've seen a review where a person commented they were upset that they did not have sweet wine. From what I was told by the staff, Chicago Winery does not produce sweet wines, and hence does not serve them. If like that trash like that, perhaps this is not your place. My wife ordered a sauvignon blanc, and I ordered a pinot noir. Both of the wines were excellent. Second, I loved the food. While their menu for rooftop is limited, all of it is made by their sister restaurant on the first floor, Liva. We ordered the charcuterie board, pretzel bites and croquettes. While the dishes sound simple they were all delicious and sophisticated. I particularly liked the pretzel bites. Third, the service and knowledge of the staff was excellent. Any time we had I question about any of their offerings, including the wine, the staff has a quick answer.
I also enjoyed exploring the rest of the building. Their first floor has a wine tasting room, full bar and the sister restaurant, Liva. While the decor on the rooftop is simple, the rest of the building is elegant and sophisticated.
This is a welcome replacement to Zed451, a must visit in River North and wine and food destination.
