Live jazz, funk, and roots music, creative sandwiches, and BBQ

"Another beloved music venue to make multiple appearances, Davis and Annie have a serious conversation about death here; Sonny watches a band from out of town; Davis and Mimi end up there at some point." - Missy Frederick

"Just a street car ride away from the French Quarter, this small club on Canal Street has great live music almost every night — and artists here receive 100% of the proceeds. Dark and moody, it’s one of the best music venues in the city, and you never know who might pop up here. Great sandwiches as well. It’s back open as of December 2022, under new owners with a long history in New Orleans’s music scene." - Lynn Wesley - Coleman

"I’m glad to see beloved Mid City music venue Chickie Wah Wah reopen this week after an uncertain few years that included the death of original owner Dale Triguero in 2021 and a short-lived stint under a new proprietor. It’s now operating under new owners — a group of local music-industry backers that includes people responsible for the return of the Civic Theater — and since closing early this summer they’ve made a number of improvements, including upgraded sound and lighting systems; see Chickie Wah Wah’s upcoming calendar for shows." - Clair Lorell

"At the Central District Black art and community center Wa Na Wari, I found it celebrating Black History Month with new exhibitions by Black artists, poetry and visual art events, and free African food for pickup from Black chefs. Food for pickup is available every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. through March; the program is meant to serve the community and promote local Black chefs and their cuisines. In February, chef Andrew Hype cooks Jamaican dishes on Tuesdays, Lakea Osias serves New Orleans cuisine on Wednesdays, and Tina Fahnbulleh of pop-up Gold Coast Ghal Kitchen makes Liberian and Ghanaian food on Saturdays; the March chef lineup is to be announced. No pre-order is necessary—just show up and eat." - Jade Yamazaki Stewart
