"A waterfront staple since 1998, this high-energy hangout with live music donates all of its oyster shells to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation to replenish local waterways. Along with its destination raw bar, the versatile menu includes tacos, jumbo fried shrimp, crabby burgers, and a dozen creative crushes in varieties like creamsicle, Ranch Water, and cherry limeade." - Tierney Plumb, Adele Chapin

"Once a locals’ hangout, Chick's Oyster Bar is a go-to for watching sunsets from the back porch while dining on she-crab soup and oysters on the half-shell and sipping an Orange Crush, a grown-up blend of citrus-infused vodka, fresh-squeezed orange juice, triple sec, and lemon-lime soda."

Just the kind of place we were looking for for dinner. Casual vibe with great food and views! In town for a wedding and staying in Virginia Beach. We walked amongst cute houses to this restaurant. Happy that we didn’t need a reservation. Place is big with different options for seating. We sat indoor but by the windows which is perfect. Great views! Tacos are nice and fresh. We will come back here next time we are in town for sure!

Chick’s should not be missed. We sat on the deck and dined on outstanding steamed shrimp and Old Bay wings to start. We followed with delicious fried oysters and fried flounder. All fried to perfection and very fresh. Pro hack, get string beans for your side. They’re crazy good. The Chick’s lager was the perfect pairing. Service was top notch. We can’t wait to return.

Very cool place on the water, busy for a Thursday afternoon, great portion, tasty. Had the mahi plate and was good, good flavor, too salty for me but probably because I forgot blackened and all the salty spices. BF had the flounder tacos and he said they were very good. Service was good, friendly and fast.

Seafood was fresh and delicious, the waitress was so sweet, and the atmosphere was fun. Overall great experience!

Google
We enjoyed a nice dinner with a decent view of the inlet. The full order of oysters was delicious. My date ordered a half dozen Rockefeller and they weren't nearly as good. I ordered the Costa Rican soft tacos and they were really good and very filling. I almost added another taco for 7 dollars but I'm glad that I didn't. The drinks and beers were pretty good and the service left nothing to complain about. I would recommend if you're specifically looking for raw oysters. Parking is valet only, but there's no charge.

A great dining experience on the water. We all enjoyed our meals and the service was excellent.

Google
Great place to meet people. The ambiance, on the water, is a blend if casual to upscale depending on where you are. There's places to blend in, to dance or to have private conversations. Service is quick despite the crowd. I did not investigate restrooms - i am particular and the lines did not look appealing. They took great care of my sports car that was valet parked. Definitely recommend.

We came specifically to this location. The atmosphere in the bar is authentic, and the tourist here feels like a local. Light country music, the bar is full, it's loud and there's a lot of laughter. We were already greeted by the friendly staff at the entrance. Unfortunately, we could not get a table outside and the kitchen only accepts food orders until around 8:30 p.m., so we felt under pressure because we arrived almost at the end of the working hours. The food was average. Deep-fried schrimps were great, but the main course was too salty.

Mark L.

Yelp
Been a while since I have eaten here due previous experiences in the decline in the quality of the food. As always the view is awesome regardless of time of day or year. Relatively small crowd in the Marlin Bar so getting a seat was easy. Waitress was attentive and very nice. The upshot was my carne asada tacos were really good, another's shrimp bowl was really good and another's burrito bowl was quite good as well. Not sure if the increase in quality and taste is due to tourist season being over or better kitchen management but we were quite pleased. Keep up the good work!

Yelp
We recently had lunch at Chick's Oyster Bar located on the Lynnhaven River in the heart of Virginia Beach. We sat at the bar and chatted with the bartender while she made drinks. She was very friendly and helpful with menu questions and suggestions. I ordered the Crab Cake Sandwich with a side of French Fries and a Garden Salad to start. The salad came out quickly and it was fresh and delicious. I enjoyed it very much. The crab Cake Sandwich came out just as I was finishing up with my salad. The Crab Cake was full of crab, seasoned perfectly and it was delicious. The fries were fantastic, served piping hot with just the right amount of crispy/meaty thing going on that is the mark of great fries. They didn't over season them either, they were perfect. We had a great experience and I'm already planning our next visit.

Yelp
Went here on a Saturday afternoon and was pleasantly surprised by the food and service despite all the negative reviews. My party order the oysters, steamed shrimp, she crab soup, ahi tacos, and burrito bowl. All the food was great and the seafood was fresh. I personally really enjoyed the steamed shrimp and would love to come back and try more of the menu

Yelp
Went by for Friday lunch on Memorial Day weekend. Place was packed so we ate at the bar. Bartender was very friendly and provided great service. We started with drinks. A couple got Chick's own Mexican lager that was very good. We started with the crab dip. Very delicious the nice creamy dip with tasty bread like crackers to dip with. I got the flounder BLT which was quite good. Fish fried perfectly. My wife got the shrimp bowl, and others got chicken wings and fried shrimp tacos. Everyone enjoyed their food. Place has a great ambiance right on the water.

Michael L.

Yelp
Love going here with my friends for drinks and food on the water. It gets pretty busy but it's always a good time. The food is very good, but I haven't had anything yet that really blew me away. As a bonus we often see porpoises swimming in the water outside around sunset.

Renee M.

Yelp
The food was great, the service was great. We've been a couple times in the last few days. The ambiance was nice. We sat with a water view the first night. Next time we sat in the bar area. Love it . We will definitely return again. Happy hour from 4-6 pm. Wait staff was very attentive.

Yelp
I was visiting the Virginia Beach area for work and my co worker recommended we go to Chicks for lunch. We pulled up and it was nestled right not he water, it was a gorgeous view. They valeted my car and we were sat indoors with a view of the bay. The service was slow, we had to flag down a waitress for some menus. They're known for their crushes so I decided to go with their orange crush and I must say It was delicious and refreshing. The used freshly squeezed orange juice as well, I definitely had to order a 2nd. As for food I went with the fried oysters with two sides of green beans snd sweet potato fries. All I have to say is OMG! The food exceeded my expectations. I definitely recommend visiting Chick's if you're in the area.

Sophia N.

Yelp
A great spot for oysters! They're super fresh and tasty, 22/dozen. I've been here a few times now, once for their ayce oyster fest on the weekend and am always satisfied. The views of the water around sunset are lovely! I've also had the calamari and the hot crab dip -- calamari was nicely battered and fried and not too heavy. The crab dip was creamy and nice, but the old bay pita chips that came with it were much too salty for my liking. Service has been great every time I've been here! One thing that may be a downside for some is that parking is via their complimentary valet only, even if the parking lot is completely empty.

Yelp
This place is always a good call if you're looking for chill, outdoor dining! Went here on a Friday night and the summer weather was just right! Im not a big fan of the exclusively valet parking, but I suppose it's necessary for how busy it can get. It was fairly busy when we got there, but it only took 20ish minutes to get seated, giving us just enough time to grab a crush from the bar. The food is great and the drinks were good with a variety of flavors to choose from! Their crushes were a tad bit overpriced in my opinion but the food prices were alright for the amount you get. We ordered a dozen oysters & the crab dip to get us started. The oysters were delish and the pita chips used for the crap dip were yummy! The crab dip itself was alright but I was a little overwhelmed. (They may or may not have a sister restaurant that does it better). For my main dish, I had the firecracker shrimp tacos which I think really stole the show! I was so full from the appetizers that I could only finish one taco! Overall, perfect ambiance, solid service, and good food to satisfy a seafood craving. I'll be back!

Abby S.

Yelp
Chick's is definitely a staple of Virginia Beach! You can't beat those bay views and grabbing a bite while the sun goes down is a great choice any time. The fried fish tacos are great, the calamari is tasty with tons of banana peppers, and the crab dip is a small portion but big on flavor. I will say it's slightly annoying that they're typically valet only and don't take reservations - which can be a big hindrance if you're looking to get dinner with a larger group. It also gets really busy if you go for drinks later in the evenings and the bartenders aren't attentive. The bathrooms also easily get slammed before there are few stalls for the sizable crowd that gathers here. All in all I enjoy coming here!

Sally C.

Yelp
I have been coming here for a lot of years. I always bring out of towners because it's just a great location with a great laid back vibe and stunning views. I actually don't often eat here but when I do I get the Combo which is steamed oysters, clams, mussels and shrimp. Pair that with an Orange Crush and you are now feeling like a local. This place has expanded so much with lots of picnic style seating, bars, outside eating, booths and high tops. Great for HH and large crowds. Just sit back and watch the sunset or boats going by. Or you can watch tv....they have those too. It's a must try for out of towners and locals. See you at Chick's!

Liberty G.

Yelp
This restaurant has an amazing view. I'll recommend going on a sunny day and warm day to be able to sit outside next to the water. This place has outdoors and indoor sitting. The food was delicious. All of them were seafood based. It tasted fresh and very well spiced. The service was good overall. There is valet parking here, it's not expensive, but just be aware of that because of the extra tipping.

Robert C.

Yelp
Service was not good. Sat at the bar for 30 minutes and nobody even attempted to greet or take my order. Felt like I was invisible.

Gabe C.

Yelp
Good food, calamari is good if you get them on a good day, I like the tuna sandwich a lot. Poy boys are mostly bread. Service is solid, nice little spot on the water

Jonesha M.

Yelp
I would give them 3.5 stars. The views and aesthetics were everything! It was so cool watching people pull up on their boats. We arrived one Saturday evening around 6:30pm. It was packed but the hostess told us the wait would be 10+ minutes so we decided to stay. We ventured over to the bar side and got some crushes. They were watery and underwhelming. We were just going to order some nachos from the bar area. It was a vibe listening to the live music and watching people on their boats and jet skis. Plus the nachos were huge and looked delicious. Right when we were about to order the text came that our table was ready so we went back to the other side. We got a water view so that was cool. The menu was ok, a little overpriced I think but it was fine. They didn't have the nachos on that menu and the waitress told me I couldn't order them and bring them back to that side so I settled for the tuna tacos and crab dip. My daughter and sister got the fried shrimp and fries. They liked it. The tuna tacos were good, the crab dip was ok. I liked the pita bread more than the dip. To sum it up I prefer the one at the oceanfront better as far as food, but the views and service was amazing. I may just come back for happy hour one day.

Yelp
Myself and my boyfriend just moved to the area and Chicks is already one of our favorite spots. We have been here for less than a month and have been back 4 times. Seafood is fresh and the sides are delish. The service is good and I have never had an unkind waitress here. Located on the water you can not go wrong. Try the fried shrimp appetizer and a crush while you're there.

Grant G.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I ate 2 pounds of crab legs here in under 30 minutes, absolutely electric. Orange crushes are god tier, bless up.

Tony S.

Yelp
Loved it. Great Shrimp, good wait staff. Was sorry the outside wasn't open. But it looked awesome. We'll be back.

Leann W.

Yelp
Such good food. Valet parking and service always good. Love sitting outside when weather allows and watch the boats go past.

Nicholas S.

Yelp
How the mighty have fallen! Please read this as an open constructive critique and letter to the owners. I've been coming here since it was a shack on the water and watching it grow and seeing the food suffer has been painful. We ordered shecrab soup, shrimp, and oysters. A classic VA beach combo. The shecrap soup was served broken, meaning WAY too much flour that you could even taste, the oysters were FILTHY and looked sickly, and the shrimp, which used to be the reason to come here, were over cooked and rubbery. I suspect that these were all premade because as soon as we ordered them, they arrived at the table. The food here used to be choice and prepared with care and pride. No more unfortunately. Service was ok. Young and distracted but nice and professional. I mean, we've all had summer jobs right? The outside covered desk is nice, great view, however I would ask that sand the tables down or something. Super sticky! Layers of paints pealing off. All and all, I wish that chicks comes back especially with other options in the neighborhood.

Hannah B.

Yelp
We come here a few times a year and it's always sooo good! I got the flounder tacos (they had another name like Costa Rican tacos) and they were spot on. Delicious fish inside and the toppings on it were delicious. Parking: You have to valet Service: Hannah was our server and she was kind and quick. She made sure that our drinks were filled and that we had everything we needed for lunch. The view: the view of the canal/bay was gorgeous and we chose to sit in the enclosed patio. It was so nice and breezy.

Michelle W.

Yelp
Some places never change. You can always count on Chick's to watch a game or a great time for time with friends. The crab soup along with oysters are always my go to options. The service was friendly. Plenty of staff. Not that fancy of a spot. But great view of the water.

Lauren B.

Yelp
The atmosphere is amazing outside! Highly recommend getting their fried flounder, shrimp, tuna bites, or crab legs!

Pete A.

Yelp
Outstanding! Couple of us got together for a early drummer and Cocktails! We sat at the bar just one of those days Had the Flounder Sandwich YUMMmM Everyone seen to enjoy their food Service !! Let me tell you about GREAT SERVICE! The bartender her name was Kylea was a blast of sunshine ! All smiles and super kind , One of my favorite things about this place is the awesome view

Nancy H.

Yelp
Best place for Football Sunday, but you must go early if you want a good seat in front of your team. They set the TVs up with different games all around. It's nice that they label the TVs so you can plan accordingly. Atmosphere is perfection... beautiful ocean views, outdoor sections, but still feels outdoors when you're not. Good service and good pricing. Their buffalo chicken dip is bomb and crushed are perfect. Don't get the oyster shooters.... most disgusting thing i've ever put in my mouth and I LOVE oyster shooters. I'm grossed out just thinking about it

Leah J.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I visited Chick's Oyster Bar for the first time on the 4th of July. As soon as we pulled up, we had to wait in the car for about 10 mins due to the valet being backed up, we were literally parked for 10 mins waiting for the complimentary valet to come and guide us. I figured we would have to wait a little while since it was around 8pm and a holiday but the wait didn't bother me. Once we were escorted to an open parking space my boyfriend actually accidentally locked his keys in the car but thankfully his door was slightly ajar just enough for one of their valet guys to help us get the door open with a special device they provided so we were very grateful for their help! I thought it was going to be a wait since it was a holiday but we were able to walk right in and get seated outside. The views from the restaurant were absolutely beautiful! Once we sat down, we looked over the menu for a while and during that time, two other couples came in after us and sat down. We didn't think it was a big deal until we realized that waiters were at their tables taking their orders while our waiter had yet to come. We waited a little while longer and actually had to flag down someone to get their attention. Since we waited a little longer than expected, once our waiter showed up we were ready to order our food and drinks. The crab dip by itself was okay but when eaten with the pita bread, it was very good. I ordered the fried shrimp and my boyfriend ordered the crab cake sandwich. The fried shrimp were delicious but the crab cake didn't have much flavor. We were able to watch some fireworks while sitting outside eating which was very nice. If I'm in the area, I would return back but I hope we receive a better experience next time.

Caroline J.

Yelp
We had a fabulous meal here on busy Saturday evening on one of the first hot days of the 2022 season. We arrived at 6:30 as a party of two and got a seat right on the deck. Our server was sweet and checked in on us and made sure we had everything we needed throughout the evening. She even got our check really quickly when we saw the clouds rolling in, so we could get in the car before it started pouring! We ordered the hush puppies and they came out right away and were extremely yummy. I love that they come with honey and butter. We also ordered the crab legs which also came out super quick as well. They were tasty but with the rising prices of crabs I wouldn't order again till market price goes down. Now the real winner of the dinner was the TACOS! My husband and I split the Shrimp and Fish Tacos. With one of the meals we got the black beans and rice. There were overly salty for my taste. Not sure if it is normally that salty or just a heavy-handed cook that evening. It was a nice large portion. Tons of fresh fried fish in the fish tacos as well as shrimp in the shrimp tacos. we got the fries with one of the meals and the fries were delicious. Very impressed with the tacos! It was also nice that they have complimentary valet parking so you don't have to fight with the crazy parking lot.

Brooke R.

Yelp
First stop on our trip to VA Beach. Restaurant offers complementary valet parking to start your experience. Variety of seating....bar, 2 levels inside, and then the sound side seating outside. Views are great. Staff was friendly and food was full of flavor.

Daniel W.

Yelp
Went to celebrate our grandsons birthday. Great food and service. Austen was our server and she was great!

Gene M.

Yelp
When I walked in the door and was greeted by the bartender and looked around, I knew I had picked the right spot. The raw oysters and the flounder catch of the day plate were great. McKenzie gave outstanding service: friendly, fast, very knowledgeable, handled all of the tables, and was busy doing all of the side jobs too. Several big tables had folks that definitely looked like they were enjoying their food, drinks, family, and friends. I'll definitely be back soon.

Eric A.

Yelp
GREAT OYSTERS! so glad I took the advice of friends, who recommended this great spot. It has the appraiser casual feel of being on the water. Everything is fresh. Mahi mahi was just right and the recommended beer, local amber was excellent. Bar tender & staff were cordial and helpful for this "out of towner" I highly recommend this place.

Tory S.

Yelp
My go-to VA Beach Oyster Bar. Everything is amazing here and the staff is beautiful and friendly. Oyster are always fresh and delicious. Just GO!!

R P.

Yelp
Always the best shrimp!!! Fun atmosphere, great drinks. Service on point. Live music!

Mason F.

Yelp
Ya better have deep pockets for this place. Definitely not budget friendly. The food was good but, it wasn't anything to write home about. They didn't let us sit outside because "impending weather" and not one drop came from the sky (definitely not anything they could control) so not their fault... It was just so expensive and the food was fries and tacos... Our Server was SUPER nice though, she was sweet and attentive and amazing!!! The service from her was great!!

Lorna D.

Yelp
Okay first the positive. Five star location. Boats, Lynnhaven Inlet, old school fish house vibes and tons of waterfront seating both indoor and out. Also great friendly service. Sadly the drinks are watered down af! Food is salty greasy brought to you by Sysco. So I go, get a nice seat, couple of drinks and crab dip that doesn't suck!

Maddie B.

Yelp
Been here multiple times and it was fine. Tonight was the WORST. My sister got kicked out for dancing on a bench. no warning, no "hey get down you can't do that" it was just "you gotta go". The security guard with the blonde frosted tips seemed to be on a super power trip and was wanting to kick anyone and everyone out who was dancing.

Candice C.

Yelp
If you're looking for a casual spot to enjoy some average dive bar food, Chicks Oyster Bar is a great option. While the food isn't anything to write home about, it's still tasty and hits the spot. The crab cakes and hushpuppies are particularly good, and they have a decent selection of beer on tap. One thing to note about Chicks is that it's quite large - there's plenty of seating both inside and outside, which makes it a great spot for groups. However, it can also get quite noisy and busy on weekends, so keep that in mind if you're looking for a quiet night out. Despite the crowds, one perk of Chicks is that they offer free valet parking. It's a small touch, but it definitely makes things easier on busy nights. The staff are friendly and attentive, and they do a good job of keeping things moving even when it's busy. Overall, Chicks Oyster Bar is a solid choice for a casual night out with friends or family. While it may not be the most gourmet food around, it's still tasty and satisfying. Just be prepared for the crowds and noise, and take advantage of the free valet parking.

Margaret O.

Yelp
Never got in the door. They advertise on their website that they are dog friendly but the valet parking attendant told us dogs are not allowed. We turned around and left. Why say you are dog friendly when you are not? It certainly would have saved a trip to their restaurant.

Kim L.

Yelp
Went to chicks yesterday to watch some football, arrived before noon to get a bar seat. Every empty chair was folded in towards the bar and was "reserved". I asked the manager about this and he said "yes that is for people who gave been coming here for at least 10 years". I've been going to chicks for at least 20 years. I ended up sitting (with only 1 other person) at a 6 top. Hated it for the server who could have had a full table. Crazy policy in my opinion.

Kaley W.

Yelp
A must while in the area. Great views and a decent menu. Cocktails could be a little better but overall not too bad. The oysters are pretty tasty and the service is really good. Expect a wait but worth it especially if you can get a water view.

Ricky M.

Yelp
Chicks Oyster Bar in VA is a stellar spot with good food and service. The college bar type vibe on a Saturday night and stunning views of the water during sunset make for a memorable experience. The cost is average for what you would expect at a dive bar. Keep in mind it is valet parking. Overall, it's a great spot for a casual and fun night out.

Ian K.

Yelp
The attraction here is the location. I could tell they were understaffed. It took a while to get served even though they were extremely busy even at lunch time. Food is pretty bland, but that's what I expected from a place like this. I also don't get the "complimentary" (cash grab) valet parking. Like why can't I park my own car? Probably wouldn't come back.

Bree W.

Yelp
When i moved here many people recommended this place so its popular for sure. I got the blue crab dip which was almost $20 in mid may. My waitress said it was very tatsty tho so i got it. Honestly when it came out i was disappointed because it doesnt look like much. But its was super good! The pita chips are seasoned too which makes it better. Id definitely split it if youre also having an entree tho it was deceptively filling. I also got a half dozen oysters. I have to say being on the beach and going to an oyster bar i was expecting more reasonably priced ones but they were good never the less. The view is nice and the decor is like any ocean bar so its a nice little place. The staff was very friendly but i was there lunch on a tuesday... it was NOT busy but the service was incredibly slow. That and the higher prices is why it doesnt get that last star. Definitely tasty tho!!

Danny B.

Yelp
Decided to come on the wrong day. There was a game on and a holiday boat parade. There didn't seem to be any table limit and customers sat at their tables for hours. Somewhat disappointed that they did not have a policy and we were not able to get seated fro 1hour and 45 minutes. It was so loud inside. Food was just ok, but I understand because they weee slammed. I will come back on a less festive night.

Gabby T.

Yelp
My margarita was average as was my burrito bowl (which could have used some additional flavor or spice). The crab dip was excellent, and our waitress was phenomenal. The location was very nice since it was right on the water and was spacious. I was surprised that they required valet parking when we arrived and felt a bit uncomfortable since the valet seemed to be working alone to move all the cars in line, which meant that my car was left sitting over the sidewalk when he told me to get out and leave it there. I don't love the thought of leaving my car with the key inside along the sidewalk where anyone walking by could potentially hop in.... That may be my own anxiety, but we live in a world where crazier things have happened.

Hungry B.

Yelp
CHICKS are always better than dicks ‍ This place was right on the water and we could watch the sunset. The drink menu had lots of options, we tried the orange crush and it tasted so good. The tacos were cooked to perfection, I had the seared tuna and the fish tasted so fresh.

S G.

Yelp
Diner beware! Went for happy hour per the online menu. It says "bar areas only/dine in only." We stupidly assumed that meant either/or. Not so. Had we known (from the website) we would've chosen another place. Crab dip was salty, oysters tasted weird, steamed shrimp had NO flavor. Shrimp tacos were good. Basically, we spent almost double what we would've if we'd gotten happy hour prices. Server should've avoided one saw what we were ordering.

Ray C.

Yelp
Nice casual place for great seafood, Had the fish tacos and my wife had flounder. Tasted like the freshest food we had in Va Beach.

Candice D.

Yelp
Finally decided to give this place another try, it was a beautiful afternoon and if you know me you know I love water. Sooo why not have lunch, On the water with amazing company. We ordered the crab dip, fried shrimp, and the blackened salmon with veggies. The crab dip was so amazing definitely in the top three of crab dip I've had in the 757. There were large chunks of crab in the dip which made it very enjoyable. The fried shrimp were simply fried shrimp- nothing about them stood out. The blackened salmon however, was seasoned perfectly. The vegetables were fresh, and overall it was a very satisfying, clean meal that I felt good about indulging in.

Barbara D.

Yelp
Been going here for 25 years, took Visiting friend up for dinner and beautiful sunsets. Was vey disappointed in the food and the upper Marlin club was closed. I understand staffing issues and was ok with closing of upper club. However, the menu change and rudeness of the server was not expected. Many of the favorites were eliminated and the quality of the food was not up to standards we have had in past . Server was rude and I am sad to see this iconic beach place change so much . Prices were raised to extreme in our opinion. Sad visit and end of a great place to always think of for special occasions and visiting friends and family
