"We live in Roxbury, so the Mission Hill shop is our local. It was a once-a-week thing before the pandemic hit, and it’s still a once-a-week thing now. We usually order eight tacos (a mix of al pastor, chicken tinga, lengua, and carnitas), chips and guac, and a burrito, which we refrigerate and reheat for breakfast the following morning. —TBD Currently offering takeout. Consult the restaurant’s website for information on the other locations. Order: (617) 286-3888 / Official Website" - Rachel Leah Blumenthal, Terrence Doyle

"Chilacates has grown into a mini empire in the last several years, and for good reason: Its tacos are the absolute truth. The Mission Hill location is just down the road from our Roxbury apartment, and we eat there often. My order, always: one lengua taco, one al pastor taco, one chicken tinga taco. The tortas are also worth your time. —TBD" - Rachel Leah Blumenthal, Terrence Doyle

Google
Always one of my favorite places! The ingredients are fresh, service is quick and portion is great. I ordered birria tacos and it took me lunch and dinner to finish the whole thing

Gabriella Bauer

Google
I'm a Southern California native, and these tacos are hands down the best I've ever had. Generous portions of freshly grilled fish topped with delicious mango salsa. I ordered 3 but could eat 7 just because they were THAT good. The hot sauce is also 🔥 👌

Google
Cozy little spot. Great burritos and tacos.. Depending on the day, they’re not fully English-speaking so hard to convey what you want. They are very nice. Parking horrible because it’s the city, Mission Hill.

Robyn Bunch

Google
Very comparable to the tacos I enjoyed in Phoenix, AZ. I suppose reasonable prices for the Boston area. Paid a little over $6 for two tacos. Tried the mild salsa, it was good. Grilled chicken and pastor tacos = would do again.

Google
Great Mexican with a great selection of ingredients and well put together meals. I had a burrito with the verde pork and it was flavorful and delicious. They also have some great chips though I was a bit disappointed in the flavor of the salsa - it didn't have much spice to it. One thing I was extremely happy to see were the tamales on the menu and enjoyed the chicken tamale immensely - that is something that can be hard to find up north. Seating is limited but it is a great location for take out. Well worth your time and money to stop by.

Google
As someone who loves Mexican food, I've tried many of the places in Boston. This place has the best burrito I've had by far 👏🏾🌯!! I didn't try the churros yet so I'll definitely be back for some of those

Google
Found some sort of stick in my food.. Rice is kind of dry, beans are good though. Enchiladas are solid and the meat is full of flavor. Disappointing portions. Other Mexican takeout in the area is more generous.

Alex Diaz

Google
Good fast chicken burritos been keeping me alive for two years from here. No parking in the area. The employees are quick and get your order done right the first time, on the weekends at night they can be a long line sometimes. Other than that their service is pretty fast

Yelp
Chilacates is conveniently located near the Roxbury crossing orange line T station. I went here with my colleague for lunch and ordered the chicken tinga bowl. The portion size was good and the food was well seasoned. They have a cute corner with warm lights and pretty art. The ambiance is nice and peaceful and the service quick.

Yelp
A solid option for affordable Mexican food in Mission Hill! It's a small place, definitely best for takeout or delivery. They were also ready very quick - walking from Simmons academic campus immediately after ordering, they were ready. The burrito bowls are super filling, although my chicken one could have used a bit more in it. It was delicious, jam-packed with beans, rice, cheese, and rice. Others in my group opted for tacos or quesadillas, and they looked great. I can't wait to try more!

Vicki M.

Yelp
Got delivery from here last night since the hubs had a craving for enchiladas! We ordered the Al pastor enchiladas, chicken tinga tostada, chicken quesadilla, grilled fish burrito bowl and the elote. The elote was awesome, I finished the whole thing although I was supposed to only have half and save some for the hubs lol :). He didn't mind though. He enjoyed the enchilada very much. I liked the grilled fish burrito bowl although I'd like the option to have pinto beans. The tostada was yummy. Grilled chicken quesadilla was good too especially with the guac sour cream pico toppings. All in all, tasty food with leftovers to enjoy again!

Yelp
I've been to this Chilacates multiple times now and have really enjoyed my meals. I'd say this is one of the more authentic Mexican places in the Boston area, and that's what makes it so good! They make an excellent burrito and excellent street style tacos. All their meat fillings are flavorful and delicious - my go-to is the al pastor. I've also tried chicken tinga, papas con chorizo, and pork en chile and those were all good too.

Yelp
Stopped in on a Monday night for an easy, take-out dinner. Our food was prepared quickly, and fresh as we ordered it, which was great. Service was extremely kind despite juggling numerous online, pick-up, and dine-in orders. The restaurant itself is cozy and quiet inside, though there is limited seating, so plan ahead if you want to sit inside. The food was good, and excellent value. I ordered the carnitas enchiladas and enjoyed them. The rice and beans were a little unexciting, but not bad. Overall a great spot for fast-casual Mexican, and definitely better than other national chains in the area.

Yelp
This place is so good, I went there before and had one fish taco right before they closed, and it was the best fish taco I've had in boston. So today, I had to go back to make sure that I was right. I'm not sure it was. This time, I got more than just a fish taco. I got the carne asada as well as the flan in the side of rice where refried beans and cheese were. My son got a burrito. I have chicken half carne asada. They take your order pretty quickly, and you only have to wait a little bit for the food. Though there is a buffet, some of the stuff gets girls fresh. The area itself is kind of small, but there was a bunch of people in there, and we didn't feel crowded, and there's plenty of places for people to sit. There is street parking, I guess it just depends on how many people are out that night to determine how many spots you can find. This place is definitely my new favorite. And everybody is cool and nice.

April A.

Yelp
Tacos are so good! Salsa is great and they have so many options! Portion sizes are large and it's affordable!

Connie L.

Yelp
First off, the Birria Tacos are LEGIT - each one is packed with so much flavor & cheesy goodness. If you're feeling indecisive, just buy them. You won't regret it. Their Elote was really good too. Corn was cooked perfectly and the seasoning is addictive. Downsides were the Pressed Corn Tacos were meh (since they quickly got soggy) and the Tamale was kinda bland. It's also pretty pricey so definitely a splurge.

maryam a.

Yelp
I'm obsessed. The food here is so bomb and affordable. I love the burritos and quesadillas. They also have the yummiest passion fruit juice.

KeyKey G.

Yelp
This is what I had to encounter while getting off of work. I've been coming here for three days now just found out about this place. The food has been OK then I assaulted. I'm from California and I've never had to deal with this no matter if anybody spoke English or not, nobody should have to go through this type of energy this type of formation of customer service. This is disgraceful. I hope this is

Isabella H.

Yelp
It looked promising when walking in and I was excited to try the birria taco plate. I've had birria tacos recently and i was expecting saucy/soupy birria but it was just plain meat for the most part. The place is a little overpriced ($4) especially for that sample size tres leches cake. It tasted nothing like tres leches and tasted more like milky vanilla cake. The horchata had a thinner water consistency but was pretty good but kinda heavy on the cinnamon. The burrito was probably the best thing that was ordered. The steak in the burrito was seasoned well.

Audrey S.

Yelp
One of the things I ordered was GRILLED SHRIMP TOSTADA Here's the description: Hard Shell corn tortilla, refried beans, pico, lettuce, queso fresco, crema de avocado dressing. The Tostada was soaking wet, you couldn't pick it up. There were no refried beans. I counting 5 small shrimps not enough for dinner. Crema was missing. By the time it arrived it was stoned cold. From the picture you can tell there was nothing crispy about the tostada.

Alicia M.

Yelp
They are charging more than the menu shows you . Birria taco says 15 and I was charged 17 . Love the food but not the prices.

Luca C.

Yelp
Good service, nice portions, very tasty I usually call my orders in and they're ready in like 10 minutes. Try a torta or a taco plate!

Kayla J.

Yelp
Great place to go for quick, fresh, Mexican food. Tons of options that are pretty customizable. Would recommend adding a tamale to your order as well.

Kelly Z.

Yelp
BIGGEST JUICIEST Birria tacos I've ever had! The combo came with 3 tacos and the were huge! And even though they were so big they had a good amount of meat and cheese inside! The meat was tender and juicy and the broth was super flavorful. I wish the consome was a little thicker though, it was a little watery. Overall, these are one of the best birria in Boston!

Jack S.

Yelp
Best fast casual mexican in Mission Hill/Fens, an essential stop for all serious fans of mexican cuisine. Kind, attentive staff and consistent quality in-house and through delivery. Have been coming here for a few years now. Highly Recommend Birria Tacos Carnitas Quesadilla Chip and Guacamole

Wildary C.

Yelp
Came here during my short visit to Boston, it was like 20-30 minutes before closing. I was honestly super shocked to see the amount of people that came while I was waiting for my food. We were a big group and made different orders, I was last to order and my boyfriend and I ordered a whole bunch of stuff so it took a little longer than the rest. No lie, more than 15 customers came while we were waiting and it was 20 minutes before closing. That's when I realized I had made a great choice when picking where to eat. We ordered Lengua tacos, Chicken tinga tacos, Carne al Pastor Enchilada, Carnitas Quesadilla and everything was delightful and so well made!!! Their food was suuuper duuuper amazing!!! 100% recommended!!!!!

Surrie J.

Yelp
I have been coming here for years, and I regularly order food at least once a week for my family and it has always been delicious. I was very disappointed in the business recently and will not be coming back here because of the lack of customer service and blatant racism shown by the employees. After placing and order and picking it up, we arrived home and we looked inside the stapled bag and noticed they had forgotten our churros. Not a big deal, but I called and asked if we could get a refund over the phone because we live over 20 minutes away, the person on the phone said no, I'd have to come back in, so my husband ended up going instead of me and he drove all the way there to collect our missing churros. When he got there he was accused of lying (by Armani Z.) about the missing churros he already said he we could pick up...is it a coincidence he suddenly decided we were lying once he saw that my husband was a Black man? Hmm you decide.

Shreya P.

Yelp
A go to for takeout mexican in south end! A variety of options and always busy. Wish they had better seating but overall an easy choice nearby to order!

Seiji M.

Yelp
Churros go hard af Everything is tasty and affordable very Great ambiance good kid menu also

Annelise M.

Yelp
Our go-to Mexican restaurant. The carne asada is to DIE for, the other meats just can't compare. It's good in everything. The bigger sizes burrito is a meal and a half honestly. Affordable. Note seating inside is limited. We also are addicted to their: Birria tacos: feels so fried and unhealthy but also oh so good. They're generous with their dip, which is more like a soup. Maduros: a really good portion size, comes with condensed milk but you don't even need it. Both of their salsas: ask for multiple of the green. The red will stretch you pretty far unless you like your food very spicy. Tried their horchata, which was only OK. Otherwise most of the rest of the menu is solid.

Victoria C.

Yelp
Great location for spectacular food, Mission Hill is slowly changing with new restaurants. I came on a weekday afternoon and ordered an early dinner - al pastor enchiladas. They also sell the best wild pop popsicles with rotating flavors in a freezer chest right next to the door when you walk in. There are also classic drinks and desserts in the cooler across from the register. The service was quick and I was excited to try something different than from before. The metal tray is definitely a very filling portion with the rice, refried beans, and salad on top. The al pastor meat was flavorful and moist. I wasn't the biggest fan of corn tortillas since they did end up getting a bit soggy. The refried beans were quite salty, but added a different texture with the enchiladas. A filling and satisfying meal and would highly recommend to anyone who is hungry and in the area.

Yelp
This tex mex fusion spot hits the spot. We have not found a burrito place that we love in Boston yet but this might just be the closest thing to it. My husband is obsessed with plantains; so he was very happy to find that this is an add on available. The chicken tinga- is super flavorful and moist. I actually really like it; and i don't really like chicken. I always get the al pastor which is amazing! the only part of the burrito which isn't great is that the rice is very dry. This happened the last 2 times we went- so we are going to low carb and sans rice next week!

Sophia F.

Yelp
Excellent Mexican street food spot that I stumbled upon after a visit to Mission Hill and the Isabella Stewart Gardner museum Their street corn was absolutely delicious as were there moist and flavourful tacos! I got the steak and carnitas tacos. I always love to get my hands on Mexican coke which is a treat. Definitely stop by for the authentic food and lovely Frida vibes! Follow me on Instagram for more recs - @sophiaeaaats

Alisa G.

Yelp
Was craving a burrito so decided to opt out of chipotle and instead check out this place nearby. The inside was super cute and kinda trendy. The menu gave me similar vibes to chipotle but had a lot more options. I got a burrito with chicken tinga. It was so delicious! Loved the flavor of the chicken~ it said it's simmered in spicy chipotle sauce but it wasn't spicy at all. The yummy rice and fresh flour tortilla just made it an all around 10/10 burrito. I'd say the only downside was that sour cream and guac were extra. I can understand the guac but I felt like the sour cream should be included if wanted. Regardless I still really enjoyed my dinner and I'll definitely be coming back here!!

Dave V.

Yelp
One of my new fave spots in boston. I got 3 birria tacos. The meat was very soft and flavorful. The cashier was friendly. I will definitely be coming back to try out their enchiladas next time

John S.

Yelp
A very welcome addition to the Mission Hill / Longwood area. The place is very small (one two person table and a countertop for maybe eight more), but if you get there at the right time, you'll be able to sit and eat some very, very good Mexican street food. I opted for the al pastor taco plate and every element of it was good. The corn tortillas were homemade and blessedly sturdy. The pork was cooked perfectly and nicely chopped. Radish, cilantro, sour cream, all welcome additions. The people working there are friendly, and, heck, so are the people eating there.

Jackie W.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place, so seeing as my spouse is stuck in the hospital not too far away, we decided to order via Uber Eats. Issues: I specifically asked for utensils (because I am not home) and received none. I ordered chips with guacamole. The guacamole came, but not the chips. Also failed to send my soda. Rather than immediately going back on Uber Eats to complain, I called the restaurant in hopes they would be willing to send a driver with the chips and soda. Instead, they suggested I come get it myself or just go on and contact ubereats in hopes of getting a refund. I didn't take my car out of the garage to go pick up the food when I ordered it, so why would I do that for missing items and then have to pay to park all over again. And yes, I explained we were at the hospital. And no, they didn't care. The guy who answered offered, "I wasn't here when that order was sent out." As if his being there would have made a difference in me getting my missing items. And while my quesadilla was hot, the rice and meat for the burrito bowl were cold.

Linda E.

Yelp
I love that this place is located close to work because it is my only opportunity to have good mexican food in Boston. It is not the best but definitely worth trying. I love Boston but they have some of the worst Mexican, Tex-Mex options. This place delivers those flavors I've been missing. I've tried mostly everything from tortas, tacos, burrito, bowl, quesadillas, etc. They do need to improve on their garnishes & salsas to be up to bar to what Mexican cuisine is all about but that doesn't take away from their offerings. Definitely impressed with their lengua(beef tongue) which totally legitimizes them in my eyes! Hands down best Mexican food I have tasted in Boston so far.

Ashley O.

Yelp
******UPDATE: I changed from 1 star to 3 stars because the manager spoke to me via phone when I stopped by after work and was really nice and responsive in trying to help correct for my problem, and I actually liked most of my food. He offered to make it again (which I didn't want), refund my whole meal (but I got it through uber eats so I gotta see how to go through Uber eats?), and to pay for my whole meal next time while stating he was sorry and would work to improve process so that doesn't happen again. I appreciate this a lot as a foodie! I understand whole "covid- doing their best" thing, but I found a staple in my torta today. I knew it wasn't from the bag because it was when I took a big bite out of the middle and was chewing was when I noticed it. (The torta itself was in a well contained bowl with plastic lid) After leaving my Uber eats food review and I called the restaurant (waiting for a call back btw.) All the girl offered me was to make a new one for me. Thanks, but the manager needs to know this happened, and needs to hold himself and the staff accountable just like in any other business. Thankfully I don't think I bit to the point where I was bleeding. Who knows if I swallowed any though and didn't notice. Also got a chicken burrito bowl. The food tasted good. But it was a shame I had hints of cleaning product in the taste. The salsa with the chips doesn't taste good IMO- was too smokey. Won't be eating here again.

Kiera B.

Yelp
Carnitas burrito bowl gave my boyfriend food poisoning yesterday afternoon. We will not go back or look at any Mexican food for a while. Beware.

Nick K.

Yelp
Chilacates is some great Mexican food and their breakfast burrito is one of the best I've ever had. I order this about equally with chipotle, but I still love ordering them for breakfast lunch or dinner!

Lee B.

Yelp
Digging the new birria tacos, made from real goat meat. $13.99 for 3 (you have to order 3) is about standard for this new dish to hit the north east.

Hilda R.

Yelp
I am really glad I order from here. The food was soooo amazing and flavorful. This will def be my go to spot.

Chelsea R.

Yelp
One of my favorite Mexican food chains located in Boston. Their churros are also delicious.

Twain S.

Yelp
Not saying anything different then others. Good food. Mostly just go with the burritos. Although I need to order the Torta again, that was good.

Susan L.

Yelp
I ordered dinner online for my family, mistakenly at this location. I immediately called the restaurant. The person answering the phone said he could not cancel the order. I made the order 2 minutes ago but he said you have to cancel through the app. Unfortunately I did not make it through the app and did it through the Chilacates website which indicated to call the restaurant for help. The person hung up on me. When I called back he repeated that he could not cancel the order and there was no manager to help me that spoke english. I don't know how the food is here. All I know is that I have no food and am out $$$.

Alexandria L.

Yelp
The owners were all sooo nice!! And literally best Mexican food in Boston!!! I got the carne asada quesadilla and my BF got the crunchy tacos! But the birria which is new to the menu is A MUST TRY!!! Thank you chilacates!!!

George B.

Yelp
always great food and a super convenient location. highly recommend the tortas and specially chicken tinga torta

Jackson S.

Yelp
Best Mexican food I've had in New England. Definitely would come back for the chicken tinga.

Andrew M.

Yelp
Pretty long wait for a burrito, but fresh, clean, good service, and very delicious. If looking for made to order Mexican food then this is a good spot.

Jane C.

Yelp
Chilacates is a great new food option on Mission Hill for college students, young professionals and local foodies! Serving burritos, enchiladas, tacos, quesadillas they have tons of options. I've been several times and had a burrito. Staff aw friendly and helpful. Unlike a chipotle/ Amelia's on Huntington you order your meal in full and do not walk down the line choosing. The chicken Tinga is super juicy and flavorful every time and their pico is definitely freshly made. Sour cream and guacamole are extra but that didn't bother me. Burritos come with hot sauce for free if you want too! Perfect size, coming to ~$10 for a lot of food. There are some tables inside along with bar seats although I usually get take out. They make everything super quickly. Chilacates is definitely a great food option to have in Mission Hill! You won't be disappointed!

Runda J.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious food. I got three tacos and they were the best that I've ever tasted. I would definitely recommend that you stop by and try their food, I know that I will surely be a customer for a long time.

Diana L.

Yelp
Coming from LA, I don't believe Mexican food exists in the Northeast. I still don't, but I DID enjoy this place a lot and I will be coming back! Thoughts: 1- Decor in this place is great. I wish I could take some of those Frida Kahlo pieces home with me! 2- I so appreciate the variety in the meats. You guys get it --it's not just about steak and carnitas. This wasn't the BEST lengua I've had, but my friends enjoyed it. The seasoning on the shrimp is great. The shrimp are ridiculously tiny, but they were delicious. 3. Their "elote" is different than the traditional elote. It's still delicious, but just not what I was expecting. 4. My main beef is the name. You CANNOT call yourself Mexican STREET FOOD with those prices. Given that this place is so far one of the better attempts at trying to bring some Mexican fast food to Boston, I won't question the prices. I also learned a long time ago that food in Boston is expensive. But, it's insulting to actual Mexican street food since the real stuff is even more delicious for a fraction of the price. All in all, a welcomed addition to this area!

Sarah O.

Yelp
Their mild sauce is the best salsa I have ever had! The food is delicious and fast and the service is great. I love Chilacates. Their elote street corn is also delicious! Only downside is you have to pay for extras like sour cream and guacamole which is pretty standard around Boston.

Deborah C.

Yelp
Came here on a Sunday around 11:30am and it was empty, but more and more people started coming in. It's a small space (seats around 10-12?) so it seems like most people order to-go. Anyways, the food is great - I ordered a taco plate with al pastor and it didn't disappoint. It was super flavorful as well as filling. I definitely want to come back and try the rest of the menu!

Priscilla T.

Yelp
Food was amazing !! The chicken taco was the best! Extremely flavorful and they are generous with the amount of meat.

Caroline G.

Yelp
Tasty, quick, FRESH Mexican food. Came a Sunday after church and ordered a Güey (small) spicy chicken burrito. Don't be fooled by the fact that the güey is considered a small because its still very filling. My burrito was HOT because the food was recently done and the flavors were well blended specially meaning not bland and not salty. We also had the chips and guac which never disappoint and the guac was obviously fresh (not brown and a little chunky). The place is small so it can get packed but again the service is done without compromising quality. Highly recommend. We will definitely come back to try the other items on the menu.
