I had the most delicious slice of pie at Chile Pies @ Church St. today. I have recently discovered the wonders of coconut--up until recently largely avoiding it whenever presented to me. So today I decided to try coconut cream pie for the first time. I was blown away. Unlike so many pie makers that assume a pie should sweet Chile Pies seems to understand that just like any other well made food a pie can have a balance of flavors and textures that will effectively draw your attention to quality of each ingredient. As such it offers a variety of savory and sweet pies and is adventurous with its flavor combinations. Even an old stand-by like coconut cream proved to be a reflection of the Chile Pie philosophy. In fact, it proved to be sublime. The coconut cream was wonderfully rich, lightly infused with coconut with just a hint of sweetness so as not to overpower the cream pie effect as it melted on my tongue. The crust was the contrast: crunchy and sweet. The whipped cream on top and served on the side was rich, but not heavy, and even more lightly sweet so as to compliment the cream and crust, not fight with or overpower them. I cannot wait to try other Chile Pies.

I walked by this place months ago vowing to return because they weren't open yet. Of course that slipped my mind until I walked by it again. Pies are one of those things where you have to get the crust just right because no one likes a soggy under cooked crust. Well they got it right here. I saw on a food truck menu, buttermilk pie. Well this place one upped that with a lemon buttermilk pie. The custard filling had a nice lemony tang to it. The whipped cream here is freshly made. What's not to love! So I got pie and my daughter who was hungry got the frito pie. What the heck is a frito pie, I didn't care, I wasn't the one eating it. So it's a bag of frito chips cut open to for a liner for the bowl. Then it's topped off with ground beef, beans, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese and a red sauce. She loved it.

Stopped in for a quick lunch. Had the red chili carne asada pot pie, and it was nicely balanced. Flaky crust and a nice savory mix of veg and steak with a gravy that didn't overwhelm the other flavors.

The blue bottle coffee was excellent. The pies looked very good and we tried the Mexican chocolate pecan one, which didn't disappoint. The place has a very homey / hipster vibe.

We tried the Mexican chocolate pecan and chocolate peanut butter pies and were very underwhelmed. The ice cream is about on par with mid-level quality grocery store brands
