Chile Toreado - Review - Chicago - The Infatuation

"5 Rabanitos in Pilsen is one of Chicago’s best Mexican restaurants. So when we found out that they were opening a new spot in McKinley Park, we were excited. And it turns out that we were right to be because Chile Toreado is just as good as it’s predecessor. The menu is similar, with a selection of tacos, entrees (like enchiladas topped with a rich mole), and an incredibly spicy ahogada torta. But there are some differences, like a roasted vegetable tlatlaya that stays magically crispy till the end of time. The space is brightly colored and casual, and exactly where we want to be eating delicious Mexican food." - Adrian Kane

Best restaurants in McKinley Park | Eater Chicago

"Chile Toreado serves up a smaller menu than its older sibling, 5 Rabanitos in Pilsen, but if it’s vegetarian options you’re after, this is the place for enchiladas, sopes, and tlayuda. The tequila menu is also extensive, and there’s a nice little patio on 35th Street where you can sit and observe neighborhood goings-on." - Aimee Levitt

We had our backyard-wedding party catered by Chile Toreado and couldn’t be happier! We live blocks away and they’re our favorite neighborhood restaurant so it was extra special for them to be part of our event. Everyone had high compliments of the food and owner Jaime and family helped make the day a great success!

Google
I got the chicken posole. It was missing the avocado in it therefore I mentioned it to the server and he gladly brought me a little bowl of avocado. Finished the whole pot. It was delicious! Service was great! Atmosphere could get better, feels like it doesn’t match the steep prices.

Google
The Enchiladas de Mole, Tacos, Barbacoa with Mashed Potatoes and Choco Flan all had really great flavors. The flavors were balanced well. 4:30-5pm is a great time because service was fast, calm atmosphere, and very homey. If you are visiting, make this a spot to eat. You won’t be disappointed. Something extra about that Choco Flan, the chocolate cake melts in your mouth and the flan had great density. Thank you for a great experience. We will be back.

First I have to say I loved the artwork on the walls. The host is pretty friendly, he made sure everything we were taken care of. The food I can say was alright, I had the carnitas tacos a little dry for my taste (had an aftertaste not sure what it was) and the barbacoa was dry for me too. I did like the Chata tasted pretty good. Overall I would pass on going again for me.

Google
I had an early dinner at Chile Toreado in McKinley Park and loved it! The margarita was strong and tasty, and the camarones verdes with chile toreado were fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The shrimp, rice, tortillas, and green beans made a perfect balance without being too heavy. Great food, friendly service, and a cozy vibe—I’ll definitely be back!

Google
The food is always delicious and the service is great too. The vegetarian enchiladas were goooood, the torta (chicken milanesa) so yummy and the Tlayula sooo good too. We all also had their fresh flavor water of horchata and Jamaica. The atmosphere was so comfortable. Great place to have a good and jolly meal.

Google
Chile Toreado was amazing. We found it by accident and was so good we went back the next day with more people. The food was delicious and reasonably priced. The tortillas, sopes, and huaraches had great texture and the meat had great flavor. The cochinita pibil was a standout for me (as a taco or huarache). My wife loved the salad with grilled chicken. The house dressing for the salad was delicious. We enjoyed the margaritas, in particular the tamarindo. We would definitely go back again if we were in the city longer and recommend it to anyone who wants delicious authentic food.

Google
Muy buena la comida. Food was good. Ordene un Mexican Skillet y estuvo rico. Las bebidas que probé fueron limonada y un café de olla. Ambos me gustaron. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Prices are very reasonable. There’s scaffolding and construction on the top floor but the restaurant is open. They bring you two sauce types, red and green. I loved the green one, didn’t get to try the red one though, next time I’ll try that one.

Yelp
Love this place! We enjoyed both the mild, savory pozole and the tender short rib barbacoa. But the real star is the vegetable tlayuda. The veggies have a rich, charcoal-grilled flavor, on the best thin and crispy crust I've ever had anywhere. It's almost like perfect filo dough, and it's huge! It could be an entree for two. The horchata isn't too sweet and has a pleasing bit of grit. Low-key family ambiance, nothing fancy.

Yelp
Came here for cinco de Mayo celebration. My boyfriend found this place. Decided to come here for dinner. Let me say the chicken tinga taco are the bomb. I would come back for that. We both got margarita....delicious I got a TORTA and he got steak. Street parking Would come back!

Yelp
Where do you go upon arriving in Chicago? Of course, Chile Toreado! Landed at Midway and placed a take out call to Chile's for some al pastor tacos on the way to our daughter's home! You can't find a better meal to wrap up a long travel day than a dinner at Chile Toreado! Great food and great people! Dine in or take out. Make it your 1st stop upon arriving in Chicago!

Yelp
I am repeat customer and I have to confess that all the dishes I have ordered and consumed were all delicious. A tip of the hat to Chef Jaime who I have introduced myself and commented on his cooking of these dishes. I will be returning to try another selection.

Yelp
Yesterday was my first time going into the restaurant. Until now, I've been ordering on Uber eats so I didn't know what the place looked like! When you first walk in, the servers will greet you right away. There's a counter that deals with the take out and delivery. Then there's tables for the customers to seat at. My group decided to order different items on the menu. I went for the crispy chicken. I wanted to get the Barbacoa but my coworker ordered that and I didnt want to repeat. Our food came out in a timely manner. My crispy chicken looked absolutely wonderful. Everyone at my table enjoyed their food for the most part. Everyone's taste buds are different so favoring was either missing or just enough. To me, everything tasted wonderful! I will be back in the future.

Yelp
Superiorly Spectacular Mexican recipes from the state of Guerrero served in a welcoming setting in McKinley Park. We'd previously enjoyed the fare here before a Wynton Marsalis concert, but our visit today was after attending a Sox game. Upon entering we were immediately greeted & seated. Service was fast, orders were taken swiftly & we were checked on often by our attentive server, Raul. Ordered: Papas Toreadas, Tlayuda Vegetariana, veggie tacos, Mole Chicken Enchiladas, Crispy Chicken Milanesa. The crispy chicken milanesa served with the cilantro lime sauce and garlic mashed potatoes were one of the many stars of the show. Enchiladas De Mole were an experience entrenched deep in flavor. I love pickled veggies & really enjoyed the pickled onions on the dishes. If you come here, you must order Tlayuda for the table. It is like a large tostada but w/crispy cracker thin bread baked like a pizza. We always get the veggie version & always a shareable winner. Toward the end of our meal, the owner, Jaime, came to check on us. We let him know we thoroughly enjoyed the dishes out of kitchen. In our chat, he let us know the recipes came from his mother in Guerrero & thanked us for our visit. We look forward to our return! Get in here!

Yelp
3 years since my initial review - I've tried more menu items and everything is SO good! I'm especially a huge fan of their brunch menu, which if you ask, you can order during the week too. I've had the chilaquiles, torta de camaron, and tacos de camaron and WOW soooo good. Their horchata is also homemade and it's fantastic. Margs? on point. Service? Always pleasant. Love this place.

Yelp
We decided to order in from a restaurant we'd never tried and Chile Toreado made the cut! We got the Pibil and Carne Asada tortas and they were amazing and full of flavor. Their horchata is exactly what I wanted and hit the spot. We'd been passing by this place on Uber Eats and that was our loss. It's close enough we might have to pull up and try everything fresh! Give a new restaurant a try!

Yelp
We had the carne en su jugó y Tlayuda y tacos Everything was excellent Service was 10/10 My husband has had authentic Tlayudas and thinks these did not compare but I really enjoyed them. Casual Mexican dining, no need to dress up here. Found street parking easily in front outside. Will come again!

Yelp
We stopped in here for an early dinner after reading previous reviews and overall we're quite happy with that decision. We ordered a couple of different margaritas and they were good. Not great, not crap. But good. For food, one of us ordered a variety of tacos, one ordered a torta, medium spicy, and the other for the chicken mole enchiladas. The tacos were good, with 3 of the 5 being excellent and the other 2 being meh. The carnitas taco was by far the best. Get that one, all day! The torta was tasty and came in a bowl with a very tasty broth. But beware - medium spicy is seriously Midwest hot. You've been warned. We loved it, but we're also not from the Midwest. So... The mole enchiladas were very good. Then chicken was flavorful and super tender. The mole was a little heavy on the cinnamon but still quite good. And the rice that came with it was spectacular. Our server was incredibly nice, efficient and did everything perfectly. The chef also came out and chatted with use near the end of our meal. What a nice guy! The interior of the restaurant was nice, clean and spacious. And they have some outdoor seating as well. I can definitely see myself coming back whenever I'm in the area!

Yelp
What a neighborhood gem!!! Super cute and quaint restaurant- vibrant inside with lovely colors! We were promptly seated and got to dive into some delicious food. I had a carnitas sope to start with some yummy agua de jamiaca, then had their delicious shrimp pozole!!! Will totally be back!!

Yelp
A hidden gem! The food is amazing here, everything was so flavorful. The staff were also very friendly. One of my favorite Mexican restaurants. I've recommended this place to my friends and they love it here as well. A must try!

Lillian C.

Yelp
The food is just so good and I think I came in an off day because in the 4-5 times I've been back the service was upbeat and amazing. I really love this place and it's a great addition to the Mckinley park neighborhood.

Yelp
A nice neighborhood restaurant that serves quality cuisine. I follow them on Facebook to see what the weekend special will be. It's usually a very creative dish, the plating is always beautifully done, and the taste is always spot on. The owner always comes out to check on his guests. The staff is friendly and helpful, they will help you with the menu (especially if you have a special diet). Street parking only, however, it's free (no meters). Highly recommend!

Yelp
Love this place - my friend suggested this restaurant and it did not disappoint! I appreciate that they have a nice selection of vegetarian options. In fact, my favorite entree is their veggie enchiladas. It is so unique in that the salsa they use is a toasted peanut salsa that SO WELL with the roasted vegetables. The portions are bigger than average which is a plus Overall, it's a super friendly spot and I will be coming back!

James K.

Yelp
Great food ! Nice friendly staff and very good location, easy parking too! Will be going back soon. Also for breakfast too

Yelp
We came here on 7/9/2023 around 5:30-5:45 and the service was attentive and gracious . The young man serving us was a true gentleman. We had the house made horchata and boy o boy was it delicious. The plantains were a little to thick for us we are use to thinly sliced ones (obviously this is a preference). Green salsa was spot on loved it the red was peppery in a black pepper way not terrible by any means. Barbacoa tacos were delicious the hand made tortillas were perfectly cooked. My wife had the carne asada and loved them. Beans were awesome chips were crisp rice needed a touch more seasoning but a solid 9.5/10 we will definitely be back for more.

Yelp
After a long day of museums (I broke the bank at the Aquarium but was free to the tech museum thanks to NSTC)., We were looking for a place between the museum and hotel and found this unique place. It was early, but the service was great. They were on top and helped us with a smile. I had a great margarita - which was a yummy way to start the meal. My family each got a Torta, and everyone liked their tortas. It was a cold day so I got the verde Pozo. It was a great warm soup on a cold day. Overall, not a lot bad to say about Chile Toreado. Great mexican food that hit the spot, and the entire family loved.

Yelp
Wow! The appetizer was the best thing I had at this place. The tlayuda was the size of a small pizza and had mushrooms, zucchini, cheese, and so many other things. It came on a thin crust which was perfect. Who thought vegetables on a dish like this without meat could be SO GOOD?! I want to go there again and order 3 orders of that dish just for myself. The carne en su jugo was good, but not necessarily mind blowing. The meat tasted slightly crisped and it was good. The pinto beans were made right. The mojo (pronounced "mo-ho") shrimp was pretty good and had moist rice. The shrimp easily came out of their shells and the green beans were cooked well. I really want to try their award-winning torta milanesa.

Yelp
Bright cheery restaurant with pretty decor. Extremely clean. I had shrimp pozole and a vegetable sope. Both were oh so flavorful and fresh and delicious. Will be back soon.

Yelp
I was staying at an Air BNBn the neighborhood and was looking for something within walking distance. This was a mile away so I decided to walk here. It was quite warm inside on a 75 degree day and any thoughts of ordering the pozole soup were quickly dashed. I ordered the mole chicken enchiladas. The chicken was good but I was not a fan of the mole sauce. I got one Al pastor taco and the pork was fatty and a little over cooked. It wasn't busy but was still slow. If I lived here I might come back to try something else. But then again I think I would just take the extra time to ride the metro into the loop and find somewhere to eat.

Pauline C.

Yelp
food was horrible the mole enchiladas just tastes off plus the horchata tasted like it came from a pre mix box , the breaded milenesa TRASH just all around TRASH

Mario R.

Yelp
My husband and I shared two appetizers, two main dishes and one dessert. Everything was beyond delicious and flavorful. Jaime, the owner and chef, is extraordinarily talented. His daughter was our food and drink server and took great care of us, very attentive. You feel like you've been welcomed into their home and treated to the best Mexican food you've ever had. Inexpensive in cost, but rich in creativity and innovation. It's my favorite neighborhood Mexican restaurant.

Yelp
02/26/22 - I was starving @ 4pm as I hadn't eaten anything all day and I had a craving for some tacos. I found Chile Toreado on Yelp @ 2022 W 35th Street. I ordered a three taco dinner that came w/excellent black beans w/queso cheese, rice & guacamole. The three tacos I ordered were 1 marinated Al pastor that was outstanding & I wish I ordered all al pastor. They were that good. The carne asada was also very good. Chili Toreado is located at 2022 W 35th street on the south side. Good food good service worth checking out

Yelp
We had soup today, Pork Pazolle and Braised short rib with Napa cabbage. Both were savory and delicious. Plus, the portions we satisfying. We will come back and try more items from the menu. The Tortas menu was beautifully curated as well.

Catherine T.

Yelp
I order often. The plantains are delicious as are the chicken tinga taco dinner. I also like the horchata as well as the chocolate flan. I also recommend the choriqueso torta.

Sophia W.

Yelp
Great service and food was excellent! Fabulous roasted veggies Enchiladas vegetarianos with peanut mole was so good.

Yelp
If you like Mexican food, you're gonna love this place. It's Mexican Cuisine at its best. It kinda hidden away, but it's more than worth it to get here. Cold beer, awesome food, the presentation is not what I expected. It blew me away. The staff is super friendly, the waitress Lorena was great. she asked how hot I wanted it. The chile de arbol is seriously hot, I know from experience. I asked for the tone down version. And my nose was still running. The prices are not bad at all either. You will be impressed
google avatar

Yelp
Small family restaurant, fair priced. Food was amazing! The servers where friendly and helpful. Portions are big at least for a party of one.

Evita S.

Yelp
Very fresh and tasteful dishes! The drinks are really good too. I've been here a few times and always leave happy and full. Love the pozole de camarones. Do yourself a favor and try the desert French toast. So good.

Yelp
My husband and I stopped here after realizing how close it was to us and reading all the great reviews. We arrived as soon as they opened and decided to sit in their cute little outdoor space. Staff was very polite from the beginning. We both ordered margaritas (pepino and the house special), guac, salsa and chips appetizer, steak burrito for my husband and barbacoa torta dinner for me. Everything was so good and fresh tasting. I was especially happy with the torta, it was served on more of a crispy baguette style bread vs the traditional round bolio- this may not be for everyone but I loved how the bread was able to absorb the juices from the barbacoa without getting soggy. Prices were pretty standard and for the quality of food, was worth it in my opinion- plus there was more than enough left over to bring home for lunch tomorrow. We'd definitely go back to try other items on the menu. Great little neighborhood spot!

Yelp
I had my birthday party here and it was amazing!!! Working with Jaime was a pleasure and he made my day extremely special! The food was absolutely amazing and he and his team worked so hard to make sure everything was just perfect. I recommend for an excellent meal or a special occasion!!! 5

Yelp
The most amazing food, well-made cocktails, good prices and the friendliest, sweetest staff!! Support local businesses!! Come for the Chile Toreado Margarita, stay for the Tlayuda!! Also great weekend specials on the menu.

Yelp
Presentation of all dishes is top notch with taste to match. I LOVE every item on the menu. The owners are friendly and want you to have a great time. Music is fun. margaritas and mezcal menu are great. I would recommend the carnitas huaraches, any appetizer, the carne asada dinner and any brunch item.

David D.

Yelp
This is as good as Mexican dining gets. It's hard to decide whether the drinks or food are better, but I love both.
google avatar

Alex V.

Yelp
Good neighborhood spot for the classics. Usually order for pick up, not have dine in, so this applies to the food only. To me it may be more on the pricey side compared to the the other nearby staples like Los Gallos and Tio Luis.
google avatar

Mz C.

Yelp
Delicious homemade superb upscale Mexican food! Tasty to the last bite & last sip of cocktails.
google avatar

Erika D.

Yelp
This is a disgrace to Mexican food. I had a carne asada sope. The sope had no flavor, but what's worse is that the meat tasted like it was refried over and over and the grease on it burnt. My husbands Torta de Carnitas, with arugula?!! A waste of money. First time here and definitely my last.

Jill F.

Yelp
This place is great, it's a bit fancier than a normal taqueria but the quality is excellent. I particularly like the vegetarian enchiladas with come in a spicy peanut sauce, really yummy.
google avatar

Yelp
True Mexican food has tons of flavor, cooked slowly with care and diligence. The food we had today was far from it. Flavorless rice, dry black refried beans, store bought tortilla chips, and snack size tacos. But what truly tipped me over today was their pozole. The broth tasted like water-truly, no semblance of any flavors whatsoever, the meat, (I ordered chicken) was the meat from a flavorless chicken leg, the hominy, obviously undercooked. This isn't Mexican food. This doesn't take me to place of comfort and love. This doesn't touch my heart and my take me back to Moms cooking. This is truly a JOKE. I cannot for the life of me understand the star ratings here. CHILE TORREADO please do better for the Mexicanos we hope you cater to. This was my first experience here and unfortunately my last.
google avatar

Yelp
We came here on a Sunday evening looking for something new and this place did not disappoint!! We started out with a tlayuda and I can't believe i was able to try one. Never ever have I seen a restaurant offer tlayuda and I was dying to try one. Basically its like a very thin tortilla thats cooked to the point were its brittle to the touch. It was topped with black beans, sour cream, cheese, grilled onions, some green peppers, cilantro, and we chose steak as well. It was so good! I feel it's big enough to fill one person. I also order the barbacoa, which was incredible. it would just fall apart and burst with flavors once you took a bite. It came with cactus and mashed potatoes. My husband had a beef soup that was heave made. honestly try this place out. You will not be let down!!
google avatar

Brett C.

Yelp
This is just really good food. It's elevated Mexican cuisine. Prepared and served by friendly, welcoming people. I found a list online of best new restaurants from 2020. https://www.luxandconcord.com/best-new-restaurants-chicago/ The reviewer called this the best Mexican food in Chicago. That is perhaps debatable as I know of a couple that stand out. However, neither are better than. You may see me here. I can't stay away.

Angelica B.

Yelp
Hidden Gem Doesn't look like much from the outside but their food was AMAZING the guacamole was fresh, the rice, beans and enchiladas were very tasty. Even the salad was great! Also try the margaritas!!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
This is a real hidden gem in McKinley Park. The first venture to this restaurant was by chance, merely because of its proximity to an event later that evening. Since then, we've been back many, many times. The waiters have repeatedly been very friendly, attentive, and kind. The food is delicious -- we usually order the guacamole and some iteration of the taco dinner (my personal favorite is their chorizo). I've never had a problem finding close, free parking. Overall, this is a very quaint little restaurant. Highly recommend.

Yesenia S.

Yelp
We had a delicious family lunch on a Saturday. Between us we had: guacamole, pozole verde, tacos de carne asada y pastor, kid quesadillas, margaritas and Modelo Especial. We enjoyed everything. The restaurant is bright and clean, and the staff were friendly. We were chatted up by one of the owners on our way out. I look forward to returning when we are in the area.

Yelp
I've been back 3 times since my last review. They are amazing. Great food preparation, service, and variety. Do eat here and support a local McKinley Park business!

Yelp
Super stoked about this new spot in McKinley Park. I've been twice so far and I think it has only been open for 2 weeks or so--thats how pleased I was with my experience the first time! Between my boyfriend and I we have so far had the chips and salsa, two milanesa tortas, carne asada torta, and mi abuelita enchiladas de mole. The presentation is fantastic without being stuffy but the food is sooooo good, with the tortas being my favorite so far. Ive also had the limey plateada margarita (not my favorite because of how sour it was, but thats purely my fault for getting something that clearly states "limey" in the title) and the fresh pepino margarita, which I loved! It's clean and fresh-looking inside the establishment. Servers, host, and a gentleman I'm assuming to be the owner were all incredibly friendly and warm. I'm so excited to come back and eventually try everything on the menu!
