23 Classic Restaurants In Austin

"Why is Chili’s on this list? This franchise opened in 1999 and operated in blissful anonymity for about a decade before Reddit began ironically recommending it as Austin’s best restaurant. Now it’s a local cult favorite, with long wait times on the weekends and official recognition by the mayor’s office. The menu is the same as any other location, but the service and execution push the limits of what a mass-produced chain restaurant can achieve. Head to 45th and Lamar, grab an El Presidente margarita, and see what Austin’s biggest inside joke is all about." - nicolai mccrary, matthew jacobs

This Chili's deserves its ironic fame - Review - Austin - The Infatuation

"You’re probably thinking one of two things when you open this review: 1. Why am I reading an Infatuation review for Chili’s? 2. "I want my baby back, baby back, baby back, baby back…” While we can’t get that jingle out of your head—and sorry if we just placed it there—we can tell you why we're reviewing Austin’s most famous Chili’s. First, a brief history. This Chili’s, located at 45th and Lamar, opened in 1999 and operated in blissful anonymity for about a decade before Reddit began ironically recommending it as Austin’s best restaurant. Now it’s a local cult favorite, with long wait times on the weekends and an official recognition by the mayor’s office. But is it any different from the 1,500+ Chili’s around the world? photo credit: Richard Casteel photo credit: Richard Casteel photo credit: Richard Casteel Like anyone who has succumbed to the lure of bottomless chips and salsa, we’ve eaten at dozens of Chili’s locations in our lifetime. This one’s menu is the same as any other, but the service and execution push the limits of what a mass-produced chain restaurant can achieve. The chicken crispers deliver more crunch than some local poultry specialists, and while the baby back ribs can’t compete with Central Texas-style barbecue joints, there’s a level of (tempered) consistency here that even the greats can struggle to achieve. Maybe it’s the massive spotlight shining on the intersection of 45th and Lamar, but something about this Chili's feels distinctly Austin. It’s unpretentious, satisfying, and the fame hasn’t gone to its head. You’re here for cheap and frosty margaritas, reliably solid food, and a lively inside joke that has wedged its way into the city's dining scene. Thanks, Reddit. Food Rundown photo credit: Richard Casteel El Presidente Margarita There are two reasons to make the pilgrimage to Chili's: bragging rights and the Presidente Margarita. It’s on the sweet end, but it also comes in a plastic shaker full of refills. photo credit: Richard Casteel Skillet Queso Despite being an essential part of the “frosty margs and skillet queso” meme, this is probably the worst thing on the menu at this (or any) Chili’s. We’re not even sure there’s actual cheese in it. Skip this and save room for the good stuff. photo credit: Richard Casteel Triple Dipper Our go-to order for game-day snacks, casual Tuesday dinners, and date nights with a begrudging partner. Choose from any three appetizers—if you’re not sure where to start, get the honey chipotle chicken crispers, Southwestern eggrolls, and fried mozzarella. photo credit: Richard Casteel Santa Fe Crisper Salad This probably isn’t much healthier than any other item in the menu, but throwing a pile of lettuce under a stack of crispy fried chicken somehow feels like we’re making a decision our doctors would be proud of. photo credit: Richard Casteel Half Order Of Ribs The meat falls right off the bone in a way that classic Texas-style barbecue spots would probably shake their heads at, but it’s very satisfying when brushed in sweet and tangy house barbecue sauce." - Nicolai McCrary

To be honest, Chili's was our third choice but the other two places were packed with a 45 minute to hour wait. While we were seated quickly, our server took a while to arrive, maybe she was on break. Once she appeared, she was fantastic and very attentive. We sure appreciated that. The food was good but they give you less of it then before and it seems the menu had fewer options. Everyone enjoyed the food and the attention of our server did add to a positive experience.

We had to stop by and try the one and only, online posted, Michelin star rated Chilis in the USA (wasn’t sure if it’s true but…). I was just 28 years old last time I was at one and I was frankly surprised. Michelin rated, probably not, however, the service, speed, and general quality was as high as it gets for a restaurant that does not have a valet or a dimly lit space. That being said, what they do have is worth writing about. Unbelievably fast, friendly service, someone always looking over your shoulder to refill your drink and at price that does not eat up an honest days wages. The food was as you would expect and adjusted for price pretty darn good but not pretentious or over sold in a “too many garnishes” kind of a way. It was good, fried food for the most part that was great in texture, fresh frying oil crispness and of high quality overall. I give tonight’s Baby Back rib Saturday night experience a high five star review! P.S.The molted chocolate cake is pretty ridiculous (melted chocolate filling in the middle of decadent chocolate cake with a caramel drizzle topped with vanilla ice cream under a hard chocolate shell topping). Sorry we forgot to take pictures of the food but here’s the last bit of dessert…

My husband and I came here for lunch. Very nice experience. Our waitress was wonderful - super attentive, excellent service. She was probably the best waitress that we have had in quite some time. They have a good selection of dishes. We both got the Lunch Special. It tasted delicious. There was lots of food. I couldn't finish mine, had to get a to-go container. I ordered the QP Burger, and he got the Triple Dipper. Nice location. Plenty of parking. Restaurant was really clean. Pleasant atmosphere. We will definitely be back.

The best Chili’s I’ve probably been too. Our server was kind and efficient. The food came out quickly and pipping hot. Not to mention that our food was also delicious. You just can’t beat the prices either. This is the only Chili’s I want to dine at in Austin. The rest do not compare. Very satisfied with my experience here for sure.

Sometimes I forget the impact of how warm friendly customer service can have on your dining experience. Wilson was our server and took care of us. Josh was the manager and he checked in on us. Food was good and a great value. This Chilli's will get my repeat business.

WOO!! Where do I start? The food was decent! However, the service was flat out terrible. The bar was wet and dirty so I cleaned it myself. We had to ask the bartender multiple times for things we had already ordered. As soon as I requested a drink he said there were Ingredients in the back and “do I have to grab it for you?” I literally didn’t know what to say lol There were only 3 people in total sitting at the bar so it was not busy. We would order something and he would immediately turn around, stand there and converse w coworkers. I love chilis so much but this was by far the worst experience I’ve ever had.

I love chilis! I love the food the music and most of all that strawberry lemonade and molten chocolate cake. ♥️ My only recommendation is to switch out your LED light bulbs. This location doesn’t feel as warm and inviting as the chilis I used to know. 💔
