Google
the restaurant has a dated interior but considering that all their orders are takeout, it makes sense. we ordered the beef lo mein, shrimp in lobster sauce with fried rice and a quart of egg drop soup. the prices were reasonable and dishes were yummy! mine came with an additional egg roll because it was a special and i liked it. for my entree. the shrimp was big and juicy although a little too salty, the beef lo mein was good, and beef was tender. entree portions were generous - both were filled to the brim. will be back :)

Google
Usually food here is best Chinese in Columbia. I always order door dash too. Tonight food was sub par and no silverware. We didn’t get chopsticks or utensils either. Plus no fortune cookies! My daughter was upset about that one.

Joshua Jones

Google
ordered some beef and broccoli, beef and mushrooms Teriyaki and some crab Rangoon's got this instead. when I called the store to see if they gave me the wrong items they said they would call me back waited 10 minutes decided that I would call them instead they repeatedly hung up the phone

Google
Service was good but the food is not. I ordered the bourbon chicken one of my favorites. Idk what this is but I'm pretty sure it's not chicken and I know it's definitely not bourbon. Noodles taste like vegetable broth. Will not be returning.

Google
China star has turned into my families go to “it’s been a long day, let’s get take out and watch a movie” restaurant. It’s nothing overly fancy, but it’s exactly what we’re looking for. We have loved everything we’ve tried (minus the lo mein). We love that the prices are good and the food is delicious. You can also order online, then go pick it up. It makes it all so easy. We will definitely be back!

Google
NO Consistency on dishes. Another Typical Chinese food spot in Columbia MO. Not a great overall value. Bottom line I would rather spend a little more for better food.

Very tasty and fairly priced lunch. The soup is one of my favorites in Columbia. Pictured: hot and sour soup, and ma la chicken.

For the most part, I have liked this place and have been ordering from there for a couple years. Favorites are 'Chicken with Black Pepper' and 'Curry Chicken with Onion.' However, I had a recent annoying experience whereby they had a coupon for a free 2-litter on their website that didn't specify any restrictions. I called to make sure I had attached it correctly to my order and they refused to honor the coupon because it was "only for in store." As the web order had already been charged and I couldn't cancel it, I decided to drive there to get my free soda (along with my order), they only refunded me $3.00 (from the $3.50 delivery fee that had been tacked on), and they passively aggressively circled the restriction on the menu they attached to my paper bag with the food. Given I'm sure they recognize my number as a somewhat regular customer, you'd think they'd just honor it and update the online coupon. Hopefully this was a one-off. But just be aware that the online versions of their coupons on their own website may be outdated.

Yelp
The food was hot but bland, the place was messy and uninviting. The bathroom was filthy. Looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a long while.

Yelp
Great food! Everything was fresh and exactly what you'd desire! The environment and customer service is similar to other Chinese restaurants... professional and accepting, just not overly ' homey' and inviting, but kind enough, which is ok bc the food was
google avatar

Yelp
So far the food is good but I haven't tried everything just yet the price is right and the taste of the food is on point
google avatar

Yelp
We were recommended this spot and weren't disappointed! The portions were large and affordable! The shrimp fried rice seemed a bit plain, but had a fair amount of shrimp! Hubby loved the bourbon chicken dish!

Kelly R.

Yelp
Cashew chicken lacked sauce, only vegetable in it was celery, and there were hunks of dried out chicken that seemed they were left over from something else and just thrown in. Crab Rangoon was too sweet and egg roll was tiny and flavorless.

Carl H.

Yelp
One of the best Chinese restaurants in town. Great taste and super friendly staff. A classic take out or for delivery restaurant. Our family loves the food !
google avatar

Jeffrey E.

Yelp
Honestly one of the best Chinese take outs in Columbia! I always get their général Tso chicken dinner meal with a side of crab Rangoons for dessert!
google avatar

Yelp
I would say China Star food is no star at all! Ordered Szechuan Chicken and it was sweet with NO heat. Very discouraging as a customer to return.
google avatar

Callum A.

Yelp
The best god damn Chinese in Columbia. Pork fried rice is excellent. Never had a bad experience.

Vona K.

Yelp
We get vegetable lo Mein, veggie fried rice and steamed broccoli with general tso sauce on the side (a vegetarian meal) and it's good! Can't speak for the meat dishes here but the vegetarian dishes are good. And cmon let's be real folks, how often do you get high quality meat from Chinese restaurants, just try eating meat free if you hope for a good end result. That's like walking into a strip club and hoping to meet your soul mate. Adjust expectations. Also friends like the Rangoons here, heard they are yummy

Yelp
Got into town and was craving Chinese food. Placed an order of sweet and sour chicken and fried rice. Took an hour to get it delivered and by the time they got it here it was cold. It was run of the meal food... nothing special... about an hour after eating I started having stomach cramps from h*ll.

Ray L.

Yelp
The staff has always been friendly despite some reviews here saying otherwise. The quality of food for the price is incredible. It's tasty and I've never got sick here. They always have your order ready under 15 minutes if carryout. They have lunch specials which are incredible deals.
google avatar

Jed G.

Yelp
They started trying to pass of bourbon chicken as boneless ribs. Was ordering every week from them. But no more. I will never eat from China Star again. The manager was rude and lied repeatedly.

Belida U.

Yelp
Not the greatest food, not the worst. I order from them because they are cheap, but the online ordering has issues. if you call them to give feedback they get mad and say they don't have time to argue with you, even when you are trying to politely tell them they sent the food to the wrong apartment and someone else signed for it. The food does seem to be compensating for quality by adding more sugar and possibly salt. I'm moving away from being a regular because of those issues, plus the difficulty giving feedback. But with another pandemic lockdown possibly on the way we are all doing more delivery and calling in to provide feedback is one of the few ways we have to try and manage this situation. I wish they got that they are in the service business and customer relations is worth some attention.

Yelp
Well the vegetables were crisp. Other than that what can you say about a Chinese place that doesn't serve hot tea? It also only has tiny plastic forks and styrofoam cups available. It's also dirty. And one other thing the booths are only about 3 feet wide so you can't sit 4 to a booth. It's seems the owners would see this obvious problem. Then again how many times do they have to say "Sorry no hot tea". Probably the worst thing was the gloppy lo mein noodles. I will not even ding them for having no heat on when it's in the 20s outside.
google avatar

Yelp
Best freakin Chinese I've ever had!!! I love that they put no onions each time!! Food is always great!! Every time! I drive 20/25 mins to have it. Krabragoons are always on point!! High recommended.
google avatar

Maria J.

Yelp
This is THE BEST delivery Chinese food in the area. Great selection, great prices & food is always delivered hot & fresh. I have found the best way to get delivery is through the BEYOND MENU app. I highly recommend the crab rangoons. Theirs has the right amount of crab mixed in with the cream cheese. The sesame chicken with fried rice is my fav. Also their boiled dumplings are amazing.

Tony T.

Yelp
I have been eating here for a few years. The food is fantastic! I love that the vegetables are crisp, even the mushrooms "pop" when you bite into them. We (the wife and I) usually eat the same thing, chicken with garlic sauce and twice cooked pork, but it is consistently good. The prices are very good, too! I love the family atmosphere. The owners often have their children in the restaurant working on homework. Don't come here expecting a fancy dining experience. This is not a white glove, multi-coarse with wine style place. The 5 star review is based on expectations. If you want good American-style Chinese food, this place is tops.
google avatar

Min C.

Yelp
Always on point. This is my favorite americanized chinese spot. Food is always prepared quickly while satiating that craving.
google avatar

Phoebe M.

Yelp
I always order take out here and they always get my order done quickly and correctly. Nothing too special, but the prices are great for getting a full belly and saving cash. I'd recommend trying the chicken on a stick and Singapore chicken. I prefer the Singapore over General Tso because the chicken chunks are smaller and not over battered. Although, I do like their General Tso sauce. Their steamed dumplings are delicious, there is no need for the dip!
google avatar

Tammy C.

Yelp
It's just your basic hole in the wall Chinese carryout place, but it's pretty good. The steamed dumplings are some of the best in town and I always order them. The staff is friendly. I just wished they carried a larger selection of soda and sometimes the floor could stand to be mopped, but I go for the food not the decor. Prices are very good for the amount of food that they give you. I ordered thru the Yelp app and the delivery guy was very ticked off because it doesn't put a name on the order. I paid with a card, so they had my name, plus I put in the comments my name and to have the front desk call me. Seems like someone needs to fix that.
google avatar

Annee T.

Yelp
Our go-to Chinese takeout place. It's about the same as any other Americanized takeout place - lots of fried specials. But the people who own it are pretty nice - sometimes they give us free canned sodas. The kid who works here can't be that old and he always seems really tired every time I go in. But I can't justify giving them more than 3 stars. Dinner special combinations are $6-$7 and they come with an egg roll and pork fried rice (they'll substitute vegetable fried rice if you ask) plus fortune cookies, of course. My recommendation is the bourbon chicken. It's basically strips of barbecued chicken with a crispy but not fried exterior; the meat tastes much more real than that in the sweet & sour chicken dish. A word of caution: they don't know how to do noodles here. I ordered chicken lo mein and got a congealed, oily glob of noodles with unflavored bits of broiled chicken. Gross...

Yelp
I would consider China Star a "fast food" Chinese restaurant. Now, I don't mean that in a negative way, but when I think of my definition of fast food, China Star fits the bill. Their food is cheap, fast, and satisfying. I called in an order of Chicken Fried Rice with no vegetables (for my daughter), Beef with Broccoli, and Crab Rangoon. The food was ready is 10 minutes and they have a little station for you to grab condiments and utensils on your way out. My daughter loves their Chicken Fried Rice and my husband loves their Crab Rangoon because it's slightly sweet. The beef and Broccoli is always good, just nothing to write home about. If you are looking for cheap, fast, decent Chinese food, China Star is a great option!
google avatar

Daniel B.

Yelp
If you want a fancy restraunt this isn't the place to go, but for good Americanized chinese food with friendly service at a good price this will fit the bill. Have bounced around the menu quite a bit and have yet to have been disappointed. Will be back when in town.

Ryan L.

Yelp
Ok so we wanted dragon place but oh we had to try soemthing new! So we turned to China Star. Let me start it simple. Worst Chinese food ever. Nothing was good. I ordered sweet and sour sauce but when they gave it to me it was a pint of red watery stuff. Almost tasted like blood? Still wondering if it was. Was freaking out. Beef teriyaki had no flavor. Happy family stir fry had a bloody type of fish in it and no flavor. Orange chicken was weird and had no breading. Rice was weird as well. The service wouldn't even separate something for me. Would give it a zero star if I could . Worst Chinese food. The place was kind of shady as well. No wonder some of it was bloody. I didn't even eat a quarter of it cuz I didn't think it was consumable. Terrible.

Ian K.

Yelp
Waited an hour and a half for food that never got delivered. This place is a pathetic joke!

Stephen F.

Yelp
Ordered - Cashew Chicken, Strawberry Chicken, Shrimp in Lobster sauce, BBQ Spare Ribs. Cashew chicken is NOT Springfield Style just FYI. Shrimp is Large and tasty lobster sauce was excellent Chicken was soft while hot and tasty DO NOT ORDER THE RIBS, mostly bones and what meat was there, was tough to chew. They hide the amount of meat to look like there is more than there is by having it overlap the top of the rice. Shenanigans I tell you! In previous orders General's Chicken, Sesame Chicken, Shrimp Lo Mein The General's claims to be spicy, it barely is at all. The sesame chicken was actually pretty good but no Sesame seeds in it. The Lo Mein was good in general very few pieces of shrimp. All in all OK food but not enough for what you pay for.

Yelp
If you like real Chinese food... don't eat here! Service? What service? even though it was take out they neglected the following. 1) No soy sauce... 2) No utensils/napkins 3) No Fortune cookies 4) Smallest Pork egg roll ever, maybe 2.5" x 3/4 5) The Generals Tso's Chicken dinner was $9+ and was made with tomato paste?... wtf? Did not even remotely taste like Gen Tso's Chicken. 6) The pork fried rice had zero taste and was "yellow died rice", not fried. I will NEVER eat there again.

Yelp
I'm from St.Louis and I was feeling a little homesick, so I decided to place an online order to a ChinStar in Columbia. I asked them do hook it up St.Louis style and they did a very good job at making me feel at home. Thanks ChinaStar! Yelp
Crab Rangoon and eggrolls are great! The food is pretty good everytime! Wish it was a little more spicy . There's a pepper my general tsoas but it's just as mild as the sesame, can't tell much a difference, other then that, good experiences so far!

Maggie S.

Yelp
Delivery took 1.5 hour after ordering with a small order. Chicken fried rice is yellow with white chicken, no flavor whatsoever. Beef lo mein is very good and so are egg rolls and crab Rangoons.
google avatar

Adrian C.

Yelp
I just ordered from here for the first time and feel like I need to help these guys out with a good review. The food is GOOD! I ordered Chicken lo mein, sesame chicken, and beef on a stick and it is MUCH better than the other very popular place in town that starts with a J. Maybe it's a regional difference (I am from CA), but I think this place is awesome and I am so glad I have found a go-to for Chinese delivery :)
google avatar

Patrick C.

Yelp
This is pretty typical american chinese food, the inside is the definition of bare bones! The staff is always nice, and the food has always been hot. I like the basics from this place. Chicken Fried Rice and Crab Rangoon.
google avatar

Pye W.

Yelp
If you want delivery or take out, the place is fairly typical of faux-Chinese fast food. They serve that yellow glop that some people think is actual fried rice and the gamut of typical Americanized sort-of Chinese food that one would expect from a place like this. Personally I don't like the yellow glop at all - it looks and tastes like the Vigo "Yellow Rice" you buy in tubes at the grocery - but if you like that sort of thing, well, that's what they have for you. The problem is I didn't go there for carry-out. I was fooled by the nice-ish tables (and plenty of them) and assumed the place was set up for both carry out/delivery AND sit-down diners. It is not. I don't know what was up with the heat in the place, but it was FREEZING COLD, and when I asked if the heat was broken, I got a blank stare. When I elaborated and said "It's FREEZING in here" the guy just looked annoyed and walked off. And it really was freezing in there. I ended up not only keeping my winter coat on, but my hands got so cold I had to put my gloves on as well. When the food arrived, it cooled off so fast I gave up, stuck the lid on it, and went home, with only a few bites taken. Please note that all the employees were wearing hoodies and jackets. As far as I could tell, the only heat in the place was coming from the wok ring. If your heat is broken you put a sign to that effect on the door. I have no idea if it was broken or if they were just trying to save on heat. All I know is it was too cold to hang around in there without a coat on, even for the folks working in the cooking area. I had ordered black tea for myself - my dining companion had ordered none. Instead they brought 2 cups with hot water and a tea bag in them - but that's ok, neither one was full, so if you poured them together it made about one full cup. Of course we'd been CHARGED for 2 full cups, despite having ordered only one, but after my experience at the register trying to communicate with one of the employees (it did not go well, let's just leave it at that), there really wasn't any point in trying to point that out to anybody. Also, when they brought the food out, they just threw it down on the table and ran off. Its not like they gave us a number or something to be called and go up and get it ourselves, but the server was pretty clearly not really in the mood to be serving. My dining companion was facing the counter and we were only about 8' away from it so its not like he couldn't or wouldn't have walked up to get the stuff if they'd waved at him to come get it, and it's also not like she had to trek across the entire restaurant to get to us ... so the attitude was pretty weird. If you want people to come up and get their own stuff when it's done, hand out tickets and call numbers. There were like 8 salt and pepper shakers on our table - literally, I am not joking - but no sweetener for the tea. I walked over to the condiment station, and there was no sweetener over there either. I finally had to go up to the counter and try to get an employee's attention (again) and after I finally made her understand what I was looking for, she heaved a great sigh of annoyance and gave me about 1/4" of sugar in the bottom of a sauce cup - she scooped it off the prep table. Apparently they serve tea but don't think it's normal for people to want to put sweetener in it. It was actually Sweet 'n Low I was looking for, but ... clearly this is a place where you take what you are given and be thankful for it. Pros: They were fast. They used fresh ingredients in the entrees. Big plump mushrooms, crisp snow peas and bell peppers, very fresh broccoli. Serving sizes were moderately large. Cons: Forget about sit-down eating. The food was average to below average, and that's evaluating it as bad Chinese fast food (the kind we all love once in awhile). Szechuan chicken has no szechuan pepper in it, of either kind - not the sichuan peppercorns, nor the sichuan chili peppers. They use dried chili flakes and whatever variety they are, they are not particularly hot. I asked for extra hot and it was barely discernibly spiced, despite seeing lots of dried pepper flakes all over everything. For a place with as many tables as this place has, they clearly don't have the interest in dealing with sit-down diners. Conclusion: Will not return. Not even for carryout. I can get carryout at ANY of the local Chinese restaurants, all of which (so far) have far better food, and this place is subpar, overall, even as Bad Chinese Fast Food goes.

Yelp
I have been a loyal customer of China Star since moving to Columbia 2 years ago. Recently we have had trouble with delivery orders being incorrect. The restaurant refused to fix the problem only wanting more money to deliver the rest of the orders. Today against my better judgement I ordered again. I normally tip 20% but this time I did not due to recent orders. The delivery driver drove off and preceded to call my wife and yell at her so loud on the phone I could hear him across the room. Needless to say this will be my last order from China Star which is sad because their food is good. If you are going to eat here I would go in or pick up your order. I am giving it one star for the recent poor customer service and blatant disrespect.
google avatar

Zach J.

Yelp
Fast delivery. Great food. Excellent customer service. Can't beat this place. Maybe out the common area but its worth the trip over. Everything is always very hot and very fresh. The management will do everything they can to make sure everythings right.

Yelp
The reason I am writing this Yelp! Review is because this is consistently terrible service. They have amazing boiled dumplings but if you order them via delivery don't necessarily expect to receive your whole order. And if you then decide to call them and ask for a refund do not expect to get one. They will just tell you that you can come in and pick up the missing order. Why would I have to drive all the way across town to fix your mistake when you were the ones that didn't include what I paid for?! I'm annoyed at the fact that there was no solution other than driving there to pick up an order THEY forgot. Why would I have ordered delivery if I would just have to drive to the restaurant anyways? It's also unprofessional to not be able to work your own payment apparatus to give a refund. To me, the dumplings or in our case crab rangoon just aren't worth the trouble. :(

Justin V.

Yelp
China Star has THE best Chinese food in Columbia, without a doubt! Most people either pick up their order or have it delivered, simply because the portions are so large that it makes a great meal for the whole family to enjoy for dinner. . . and for lunch the next day! The Crab Rangoon at China Star are better than I've had anywhere else. The prices are very reasonable, and the portions are very large. It is a great value, and the food is fantastic! I have my food delivered by China Star frequently, and the drivers are FAST, friendly and very polite! The food arrives quickly and it's "fresh-out-the-oven" hot! *As a former "delivery driver" I recommend that you tip your driver (15% at least since they use their own cars and pay a lot for gas). Remember, this is how the drivers earn a living! I HIGHLY recommend China Star to anyone who is a fan of fine Chinese Food, whether you eat it in-restaurant, or at home!

Yelp
First they don't send the order at all, then they send the wrong order, then they refuse to send the right order, argue about it, hang up in your face. Very rude, very unprofessional and very stupid.

John B.

Yelp
Worst delivery experience ever. Ordered my food at 130 it arrived somewhere around 2. My girlfriend got her food however, mine wasn't what I had ordered. I called the place to let them know of the issue and they tried to get me to have it credited for next time I order from them. So, I said no I'm sorry I was hungry and couldn't eat what I was given as I didn't like it. She says okay but it will be awhile. My food did not get there until 4:15. I waited a total of almost 3 hours to get my food. Wasn't even hungry anymore by the time I got it. HORRIBLE!!
google avatar

Berto B.

Yelp
Great value, the quality/quantity and price make China Star one of my favorite go to Chinese Resteraunts for delivery/take out in town. The Singapore chicken is one of my favorites. Give this place a try, you won't regret it.

Armani C.

Yelp
I ordered from here through GrubHub and I put I wanted Shrimp Fried Rice with my Sweet and Sour Chicken so I made super I put that in the comment section. The total came out to $15 when the delivery guy got here and I figured it went up from $13 since I added shrimp fried rice. I paid and when I opened my bag, there was no Shrimp Fried Rice so now I was confused as to why I paid $2 more. I called and the stupid people said I didn't order shrimp fried rice and that it would be $3 more if I wanted them to bring it to me. In the end, I ended up over paying for some decent, not excellent, food and I got hung up on when I called complaining. You're better off going to New Jingo's.
google avatar

Anja S.

Yelp
I was super excited about my food after I had some of the best hot and sour soup I've ever eaten, but the cashew chicken left so much to be desired I soon forgot about the soup. The chicken tastes like it had been fried in some very old oil, and the sauce was overly salty. Overall I'd say that this is probably the most disappointing Chinese restaurant in town.
google avatar

Abby J.

Yelp
Worst costumer service I've ever had. They deliver the food forgot an order and tried to charge my friends again for the delivery fee. THE ORDER WAS THEIR MISTAKE and they wanted to charge extra for their dumbasses. The delivery man also didn't have change so he ended up with an eight dollar tip. I will never order here again. On top of it all the food was absolutely shit. At the manager also refused to refund my friend and said fuck you to her at the end of the call. I hope this establishment is closed down.

Rhonda M.

Yelp
Didn't deliver entire order. I called they said they would send it out and 1.5 hours later it arrived. Nothing extra, exactly what we ordered. Not even an extra fortune cookie. No apology and even tried to NOT deliver it by offering a credit for my next order NOT my credit card they had charged for something they didn't give me. That would be assuming I would order from them again. Food was ok. Trying someone else next time due to Unacceptable service.

Taylor B.

Yelp
Best Chinese place in town. The sweet and spicy sauce they use for the General Tso's Chicken is the best I have ever tasted. There are other really solid dinner special choices too like the Ma La Chicken and their Sweet and Sour Chicken is great and always comes with plenty of sauce! This place delivers too; the ENTIRE city in fact, from Prathersville to south Route K from St. Charles Rd. to Midway there isn't a place where these guys wont deliver.

William S.

Yelp
Twice i have ordered food here for delivery and they have taken 1+ hourse to fufill the order!!! I will never order from here again! The food is sub par and is not worth the obnoxiously long wait.

Heather J.

Yelp
Best Chinese takeout in Columbia! Everything we've ordered has been delicious, and it's always delivered quickly. Sometimes during dinner it takes almost an hour, but that's how long it takes just about anywhere. The food it worth it, though, and we've never had a bad meal from them.

Abby L.

Yelp
This is the best Chinese place in Columbia! Excellent, fast, friendly service at the restaurant and quick delivery to practically anywhere in Columbia! Great food and a lot of variety to choose from that is priced well! I highly recommend this restaurant, I go about once a week!
