Government Hill’s family‑owned China Town offers two menus: Chinese‑American standards and a separate authentic menu with dishes like lazi chicken, seafood hot pot, and crisp duck. The owners note decades in Anchorage and deep community ties, including catering visiting delegations.

I now have reason to drive government hill is for the lunch special. Out of this world delicious and hot. Best lunch special in long time and I will be back. Thank you for putting love into making delicious authentic Chinese food! Sesame chicken and fried rice.

Google
The food was good but very saucy. Our fried rice was drenched in the Mongolian beef sauce, and it was kind of unappetizing towards the end. We shared the D1 meal combination and had to pay $2 extra to substitute the sweet and sour chicken for the sesame chicken. The egg roll the meal came with was more like a spring roll, much smaller than an egg roll. The service was friendly and quick.

Ordered online for pick up. It’s not super busy due to the weather. They missed my ticket had me wait in the lobby. On the ticket it clearly says would like steamed white rice. They still out fried rice in the to go box. This was cleary tso or another type of chicken made for another order and was re-seasoned. To be orange chicken. It be one thing if the food was great. But all of the inconsistencies have made it so I can’t recommend sitting down or placing a pick up order. And i certainly will not be eating here.

Google
Good presentation looks great, however the food itself was very cold. The Chinese doughnuts were delicious. The best thing we ordered from there. The fried dumplings were okay. Tasted better. The shrimp fried rice was cold, mind you we were the only customer there for dine in. It tasted very plain and the shrimp wasn’t cooked enough. Portion size was huge. Ratio of rice to shrimp was too much. Only had like 7 small shrimps. The D7 I got, the fried rice was also plain and cold. The sweet and sour chicken was very greasy and also cold. The crunch was good though. The egg roll was also cold, wasn’t good. For the chicken chow mein, the noodles were hot but the chicken wasn’t. It was salty but was the only food out of everything that had taste. Food was quick to come out. Confused why they’re cold though. Hospitality was good. She refilled the water and asked if everything’s still okay.

We usually go to our other spot, but today was Sunday and they were closed, and we decided to try out Chinatown, was not very pleased, the Mongolian beef was very minimal beef, an abundance of onions in it, the sweet and sour chicken was loaded with the “sweet & sour” sauce, was flavorless chicken, we ordered fried dumplings, and they were steamed instead of fried, just was very disappointed with flavor. And quality of the food. 2/10 I do not recommend unless you want to waste your money. Almost every person who ate left a bunch of their dish, not appetizing, and unfinished

Google
We ordered two lunch combo plates. My sweet and sour pork, fried rice, and vegetable chowmein was good. My wife had almond chicken and she said it was disgusting. We overheard the cook talking loudly on the phone to a food supplier telling him his chicken was smelly and rotten and he can't wash the smell off. The man on the phone said not to throw away the rotten chicken he would come get it. Needless to say we were grossed out overall.

Google
Food is great. My total was 25$ but for some reason I was charged an extra 2$ and they wouldn’t allow me to pay at the restaurant when I got there and forced me to pay over the phone. I get it’s 2$ but for you guys to illegal take money like that isn’t okay

Paul Haws

Google
Very friendly owners. I pick up here for Uber eats all the time, my customers love the food and the restaurant makes it easy to pick up, so we can service our customers quickly!

Yelp
They need to close this place down. What a rip off. Food was garbage and cold. Great menu items but the flavor and freshness just wasn't there. Even the oranges were watery not even sweet. Great service and nice elegant restaurant though.
google avatar

Diondra A.

Yelp
I called and asked if they did delivery and the lady came in a rude manner said "NO" and hung up the phone in my face. Didn't ask if I wanted to pick up the order or anything . I'll never pay them my money. BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE GETS YA NO WHEERE . 0 stars . Cause it's a no for me . If it was required it wouldn't be one .

Kevin P.

Yelp
No Buffets so don't believe it what it says here. I called them and that's exactly what they told me.
google avatar

Yelp
When doing door dash or instant cart there service isn't so hot cause if you want to add more to order you have to cancel you other one first. Others then that very big amount of food when ordering. Their service isn't the best though. Not sure what it looks like in side never been in.

Yelp
I ordered take out from here and spent well over $100. My family was so excited to enjoy this food but we were very disappointed. First off, the rice smelled and tasted of dish soap. The Mongolian beef and the meat in the pork buns both tasted like Burger King beef. The pork bun dough tasted like pilsbury can dough. The "king sized" egg rolls were more like small lumpia that were SO SALTY. The sweet and sour chicken only had a dash of sauce on half or the chicken. The whole reason we even ordered specifically from this place was for the pork buns. Never again.
google avatar

Phill R.

Yelp
Overpriced. Everyone is correct about the picture on menu and what the food looks like. Portion sizes are average. Taste is not the greatest. Don't expect much . Two stars because food service was good just not the food for the price!

Zenovia T.

Yelp
The food I ordered on Uber eats looks nothing like the pictures. Obviously doesn't take pride in their work. Everything is flavorless. The egg roll did not taste good. I waited a hour just to get disappointed and still hungry because I'm not eating this.

Yelp
We were in town on vacation and just got in from a long day of traveling so we decided to order delivery. This restaurant came up and we both love good Chinese food and this place did not disappoint. While the prices seemed higher than other cities the portions are rather generous and the food was great. If you are in the area and in the mood for good Chinese food stop by or order in.
google avatar

Carrie R.

Yelp
I am surprised that they have negative reviews. It's my favorite Chinese takeout place and the food is always correct and delicious every time. Large portions too.
google avatar

Jocelyn F.

Yelp
Came here for dine-in and wow I forgot how good Chinese food can be when fresh out of the kitchen. Place has been remodeled and menu tremendously truncated. We were the only diners here at 7pm Sat night, but witnessed many takeout orders picked up. No more traditional authentic menu (super sad!); see new menu photos. Egg rolls were delicious and well seasoned, but small for $2.50 each. Sesame chicken, Mongolian beef, and chicken fried rice were perfection for our Chinese fix. Peking pork (off menu but still available, without wrappers) was good, but needed to be fried a little more to caramelize the sauce and crisp up the meat; as-is, the sauce was overpowering. No more bonus treat with our $100+ order: they used to give crab rangoons, or a meat pancake, or something else which was always fun to experience things we wouldn't normally try. Not even fortune cookies with the bill (and told that's Japanese culture). Had to ask for a refill on waters. Soda was served by the can. Still recommend for the essentials and will be back.

Yelp
Take my review with a grain of salt as I'm currently very sick, but I love China Town! My sister ordered me some delivery while I'm quarantined, and everything tasted fresh and flavorful. The teriyaki chicken tasted like it had been marinating for hours, and was good quality chicken. The pan fried potstickers were so juicy and flavorful, but perfectly crispy even with the delivery distance. They popped with each bite! My biggest gripe is the price -- two drinks, one fried rice, one entree, and an order of pan fried potstickers cost $70. The other thing bringing the review down was the boba, the pearls were so hard , not anywhere near fully cooked.

Yelp
I don't usually go to buffets but one of the guys talked me into it. This place is almost hidden in a little strip mall outside the Gov Hill hate at JBER. When you enter you'll immediately notice the large picture of what looks to be the Chinese government, kind of an off place for not. We made our to a table and was invited to help ourselves to the Buffet. It was well stocked with a nice variety of choices. The food seemed to be fresh and well seasoned. They continues to bring small portions out as needed versus filling up a large amount to sit, I like that. We each had a couple plates and could have had more. The ladies working inside were all very sweet and accommodating. Nice place, I would go back again for sure.
google avatar

Shawn P.

Yelp
Looks like they've done away with their lunch specials, but the food here is still pretty good if not cheap. Allegedly they renovated as well, although it kind of looks the same. The sesame chicken and vegetable noodles are very good.

Yelp
This was the probably the worst $70 Single person meal I've ever purchased. I ordered House Fried Rice, Pork with Chinese Cabbage, Two Eggrolls, and a Taro Milk Tea with Boba. The fried rice was made with partially cooked rice so there was a lot of hard pieces, the pork was ok not much meat but it was practically soup, for $2 each egg rolls, they had no meat and were small. Definitely not worth $2 for cabbage fried in a wrapper. The Taro Tea came with an open lid so that went straight down the drain. The fried rice came in a container the size of a burger container from a fast food container. I used Door Dash with free delivery. So an open container with a delivery driver for the tea? Not for me I'm in quarantine and was just craving Asian food while holed up here in anchorage. I frequent this area for work a lot and this is the second time I've had Asian food and It sucked both times and reviews were decent online. I'm starting to think maybe because this place is known for seafood, there isn't much competition or a taste for good Asian food? I think I'm giving up on Asia cuisine here.

Yelp
12.50 it's pretty good for an all you can eat Lunch buffet during the week in Alaska! Some of the dishes are deep fried and Americanized, while some are more typical Chinese cuisine and therefore healthier. For dinner there are some combo plate options, so you don't have to choose just one entree. Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
I ordered just sweet and sour chicken. They literally forgot to add the sweet and sour sauce. I called to let them know and what they can do. The lady on the phone laughed and said there's nothing she could do and hung up.. order somewhere. Don't get food here

Ellen S.

Yelp
Ordered for delivery Mongolian Beef and Sweet and Sour chicken and Chicken Chow Mein and Sweet and Sour Pork combos with chicken fried rice. The egg rolls were soggy. I had specifically said to put sweet and sour sauce on the side and neither orders had the sauce on the side. Everything was soggy and drenched in sweet and sour sauce! They package food in styrofoam instead of individual Chinese take out boxes, and it was cold and disgusting. Will absolutely NOT order again from them! Major ripoff! The total bill was around $60!!!! We cook better Chinese at home.
google avatar

Amber D.

Yelp
This place is mehhhh... not to much to say about it, the sauce is always skimpy and the food is not what you want from a Chinese food place. To be honest I'd almost rather go to Panda Express and get better quality. Service deserves stars everything else not so much

Mary R.

Yelp
I ordered my all time fav (chicken fried rice) every bite of chicken was slimy and felt like a p3ni$ in my mouth got egg rolls and they had no meat and the sweet & sour sauce tasted like water #disappointed
google avatar

Jilliss P.

Yelp
Giving an extra star because it's covid time and restaurants are struggling... I ordered the sesame chicken, veggie low mein, and an egg roll. The low mein was flavorful enough, standard fare. Not overly greasy, which is a plus. The chicken, sadly, was incredibly bland as was the sauce. Also disappointing was the egg roll. $2.50 for one egg roll the length of my thumb. I've never seen one so small. Even at AK prices I would expect 2 that size for that price. And the sweet and sour "sauce" was so watered down that it was literally hot pink water that didn't stick to the egg roll, instead it just made it soggy. I get that watering down sauces is an easy way to cut costs and normally I cut the business slack but this was like the roommate who drinks your vodka, fills the bottle with water before returning it to the freezer, and doesn't think you'll notice that your "vodka" is frozen solid... Maybe I picked the wrong dish with the chicken...if I try this place again I'm definitely going to go with a budget combo plate so I don't spend $18 on something that might have no flavor. But to be honest, I probably won't be back anytime soon.

Shahbaz C.

Yelp
My guaranteed go to has always been general Tsos Chicken, and this place certainly lands in My top 5

Andrew M.

Yelp
I don't know why I gave this restaurant another try. This is NOT worth $20. The egg roll was soggy and chewy, sweet and sour pork had no flavor.

Yelp
China Town has remodeled! They now have a new private room up front, updated entry, and expanded main dining seating. Looks great, but we're here about the food! This remains the best bargain in town for a lunch buffet at $10.50 including your drink. They've stepped it up a notch with sushi rolls everyday, and several different ones! Yes, these are what some people called "American Specials." But, hey, if you stuff something with cream cheese and shrimp, bonus if you fry it, I'm your biggest fan and you can call it whatever you want. Simple, fresh quality ingredients in their beef and chicken dishes keep you going back for more. I adore the green beans with garlic and Mongolian beef! The crab and cheese stuffed won tons are house-made and worth the price alone for all you can eat. A recent addition to the buffet is the Chinese Pancake. I'd never had it, but am now addicted. It's a savory blend of meats and spices that I could not get enough of. The pancake itself is light with a wonderful flavor of sesame oil. The ladies that work the lunch shift are always smiling and happy to see you. "Make people feel welcome and feed them well." A simple recipe for restaurant success that China Town has perfected.

Yelp
Pretty darn good. The best locally owned Chinese restaurant I've encountered since I moved to Alaska. The owners are actually Chinese, rather than Korean, so the food is a bit more authentic (made the way I'm accustomed to back on the east coast.) They're in the middle of a big remodel right now, so when we went we were the only people there. Our food came quickly but was also obviously made to order. In particular the mongolian beef was out of this world... it had that fabulous grilled beef flavor that is missing from every other place in town. And the Chinese donuts were off the chain. I'm looking forward to going again to sample more of their offerings. It just sucks it's in such a weird, out of the way location.

Yelp
I had Genera Tso's chicken and fried rice and both were amazing. I would definitely recommend China Town Restaurant! I'm anxious to try their lunch buffet.

Viki K.

Yelp
Great food, but really should provide military discount being right outside of the gate.
google avatar

Yelp
Below average overpriced Chinese food even for anchorage. The sweet and sour sauce that came with the sweet and sour pork was extremely bland. I could barely tell the difference between the Szechuan chicken and the sauceless sweet and sour pork(sauce on the side was nice at least) other than a little spiciness. Last time I got the Mongolian beef and it was very average. The only food that met expectations was the crab rangoon which seemed to be cooked the right amount of time. The blueberry tea was good as well.

Rohan S.

Yelp
Had a disgusting experience. Can't believe I ate such food. The taste was bad & it was extremely greasy but that's not why I write this review. We ordered delivery and both me & my friend had stomach ache after eating their food. It's unacceptable that they are selling food that isn't even safe for consumption.
google avatar

Yelp
The in-laws wanted Chinese food after getting off a 7-day cruise so we decided to check this place out. When we got there around 5:30 for dinner, it was not very busy. We were seated promptly and ordered: - pork buns: mine had a small amount of pork and a lot of bun. It was not that juicy. - seafood tofu hot pot: small shrimps and scallops and lots of tofu. Also some vegetables. It was good. - Kung pao chicken: There were only 3 chicken choices so we ended up with this one. Flavor was good and portion size was good. - vegetables: fine Overall, it was perfectly fine. I've had better Chinese food but it was better than expected.

Dee H.

Yelp
The food was "OK", but the portions are skimpy!!!! A "regular" China Town order is a the small take out container, if you want a "regular" size as other Chinese restaurants offer you have to pay $4.00 more. For a regular #16 House Special Fried Rice for $12.99 you get a half portion!! Will not be ordering from them again, if they care more for overpricing their items that pleasing their customers!!! Not worth the price you pay for the amount of food you get
google avatar

Yelp
pretty good awesome! This is the best Chinese restaurant in Anchorage I have found! Recommend with black cod, spicy shrimp!
google avatar

Cheng C.

Yelp
They have real Chinese food which is really rare in Alaska. We are really satisfied with the quality of food and the service. The decor of the restaurant is very elegant and the food is exactly same with the ones I ate in north side of China! We will definitely come back again!

Sherrie P.

Yelp
Had lunch at this restaurant and it was a total disappointment. Did not have king crab or crab, ordered shrimp chow mein and won ton soup. Very little cabbage and shrimp in the chow mein and there are no visible won tons in the soup; there were pieces of broken won ton skin and a few won ton fillings that tasted like rubber. For dine-in, the food was served in take-out containers. We are visitors from Los Angeles, found this restaurant on Yelp with good rating so we took a Uber from our hotel to give it a try. I hate to say it, but a restaurant like this would not survive one day in LA.

Josh M.

Yelp
The order takes longer then proposed good food but they take a little longer then they keep saying
google avatar

Josie P.

Yelp
Small portions, bland, cold when delivered and very expensive. A disgrace to Chinese cuisine. Heed the warnings from other 1 star reviews. I was hopeful they were just being too harsh. Figured I'd give them a shot since I was craving Chinese. I got the combo with the sweet and sour chicken and Mongolian beef for 23$. Let's start off with the egg roll. It was just filled with lettuce literally nothing else. The bright pink dipping sauce was just sweet with no other flavor. I think that same sauce was used on the sweet & sour chicken. Next disappointment was everything was just lukewarm when delivered. Was a super quick delivery so that problem came from the kitchen not heating anything through. The portion of Mongolian beef was on top of the fried rice as to make it look like there was more beef then there was. Sweet and sour chicken was soggy and dry, the sauce tasted and looked like the dipping sauce they serve with the egg roll. Seriously China Town? You rip people off that are trying to support local businesses like yours. Shame on you.

Yelp
For me this is an easy 5 star experience. The staff are friendly and helpful. The menu is loaded with all the most authentic Chinese food available in Anchorage. Tonight I had one of my all time favorite dishes, spicy eggplant ($18) with steamed rice. If I lived in Anchorage would come here at least 3 time per week!
google avatar

Yelp
Pleasant surprise! Craving some homey fulfilling Chinese food. Well flavored and not sopping with grease or sodium. Menu was extensive as most Chinese restaurants are. Service was attentive and informative. Very relaxing atmosphere. Ordered the egg flower soup and crab Rangoon. Wasn't a lot of crab but the cream cheese was smooth and steamy. Egg flower was clear and peppery, perfect to combat this nasty cold I've been fighting. Huge bowl for us to split and plenty to take home! I ordered the combination dinner of Mongolian beef and subbed my second protein for chicken lo mein. Noodles were lightly sauces and breaded chicken was still crispy. Mongolian beef had a full body flavor without being super salty or greasy. My husband ordered the crispy duck with sweet and sour pork combo. Duck skin was wonderfully fried and crispy and enough moisture on the inside still. Egg rolls were kinda "meh", but the fried rice side really stole the show. The best part is they offer orders to go by text! Overall, the price was t bad for the quality and the portions.

Yelp
Great AUTHENTIC chinesse restaurant! I live in florida and have been to china 3 times.
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
Nothing really negative to report. But nothing really positive either. It's typical American Chinese food. It works if you have a craving.
google avatar

Qun W.

Yelp
I love the authentic Peking roast duck here, so also do a lot of other authentic Chinese food like leek pancake, scallion pancake and meat pancake. All the food is exactly like my hometown food in China which make my days in Alaska much better!
google avatar

Maya L.

Yelp
As someone who loves authentic Chinese cuisine, I am so glad I found this place! We were touring Anchorage and were disappointed at the selection. A lot of Panda Expresses and similar American style Chinese food but none of the good stuff we're used to in Los Angeles and San Fran. This place gave us a good selection of authentic Chinese dishes to choose from and we enjoyed the library like atmosphere. When you're there be sure to ask for their authentic menu or you'll be ordering from the American style menu!

Yelp
3.75. As an asian person, I approve. This is closest to what I can find of what I miss in SF. Outside of the building looks rough, which is a good sign. The best places in SF looked sketchy. It means they place more importance on the food. Respect. Order from the Chinese menu. Salt and pepper shrimp. Spicy eggplant. Dumplings. Good shit. Also, it's across the street from Pho Vietnam 4, which is the best place for house made rice noodles and pho, in addition to Pho Dimond. Why not make it a two for one and go to both spots since they're on the same street?
google avatar

Marvin L.

Yelp
I visited this place a couple of times for their lunch buffets. The food is actually decent and priced fairly for Alaska, but the place itself is run down and nothing to rave about. I decided to order take out right after work since It was on my way home. I walked in and there was a couple sitting in one of the booth enjoying dinner. A young man greeted me and was very polite. However, while he was taking my order a Chinese waitress was in the dining area clipping her fingernails. Then she moved next to the cash register and started clipping away some more. Needless to say, I walked out and will never go back there again. Like I said the food was decent, but if you can clip your nasty fingernails in front of customers I would like to see how they prepare food in the kitchen. I don't expect a lot from a hole in the wall restaurant, however, cleanliness for me is paramount.

Yelp
Great food. Friendly wait staffs. They also have improved their decor and give it a nice facelift for the whole restaurant.

Gina H.

Yelp
Save your self the money and time Do not go to this restaurant bad bad service not good food. the owners was yelling and screaming at each other and their staff pretty much all the time we where their. the food was not good. sweat and sour oork was dry with mo vegetables the magolian beef had small chuncks of brown sugar that was not desovled in the food you can taste the small chuncks of brown sugar which you shouldn't have to eat the cunckes of brown sugar. service sucked big time no drinks before the meal. one meal came no silver wear. the other 2 meals came a few minutes after and no drinks for the 3rd time i asked for drinks and silver wear. so we sat with our food in-front of us with no drinks and no silverware for a few minutes. then the drinks snd silver wear came. owners yelling at the staff some of the staff is yelling back at the owner. this made a hostile environment to listen to while waiting gor our food and drinks. was their way to long. the foid was dry. hardly any sauce on the sweat and sour pork. with the yelling snd screaming in the kitchen git my PTSD inside of me going. walked out after eating and paying made for a very very unhappy dinner. Because of the price for the quality of food you get. The yelling the food sucked to expensive. Do not go here. Owner is a ass and don't care about their customers.
google avatar

Hao Z.

Yelp
As a Chinese guy, I enjoyed their food. Dining environment and service are good too! A fairly good Chinese restaurant in Anchorage.

Birgittah L.

Yelp
Don't bother buying there meal. They rip you off!! Spend $60+ for bad meals! I called and complain the meal and the lady apologize that they didn't mentioned it as a small meal on the menu. Very misleading!!
google avatar

Meghan W.

Yelp
I'll have to say it... the foods just really not as good as the old owners. We live in the neighborhood and we just can't get over how different it is. Plus the portion size.. it doesn't taste really fresh all the time anymore and the vegetables seem to be the kind in a frozen bag.
google avatar

Jeremiah M.

Yelp
Really poor food and expensive, missing two egg rolls from order but I was glad not to get them they were so greasy.
