This place got better! HITW(hole in the wall) status been
Coming here for about 15 years. You always need a GoTo cheap
Chinese spot that makes cheap fresh food woth huge portions. No frills, a little dated, a little dingy, needs updating but not to the point that you're turned away. This is the place. The food has always been fresh and cheap. It has always been good enough for the price to keep coming back. Recently, they seem to have undergone new ownership or management, may be synonymous in this case, but they also added a cook, Fu, that was the main cook at an old revered HITW in Stockton, George's Chinese Deli. (I frequented Georges
Since the late 80's) They boasted the best Garlic fried chicken in town, you're lying if you disagree! I saw Fu at China Village and can verify he is there cooking now. With that said, the food is even better now. Just brought the wife and 2 of our adult kids - ordered the following:
1. Fried Green Beans - appetizer, plentiful, freshly fried, light, not greasy, crispy, well seasoned. Delicious with the sweet & sour sauce. Wish they had ranch.
2. General Chicken - breaded, fried nuggets in a salty, sweet dark red sauce - was delicious and stayed crunchy in the heavy sauce. The sauce is tangy, slightly spicy - fine for everyone. Served with fried rice, was excellent. Better than before.
3. Lemon Chicken - wife's favorite - lightly breaded and fried chicken breast - crispy but still moist, sauce was lemony sweet and was excellent.
4. Walnut Shrimp - battered fried big shrimp, tossed in a sweet white sauce. Shrimp was not fishy at all. No fishy smell. Was suculent and crispy. Sauce was not overwhelmingly sweet with pieces of walnut mixed in. Was excellent.
5. Chicken with mixed veggies - white meat, tender, stir fried with carrots, snow peas, onions - was cooked perfectly. Sauce had black bean -U could see it. Salty, savory with just a touch if sweet. Excellent.
6. Ginger Chicken Chow Mein
- chow mein with no veggies infused with ginger - this is my wife's signature dish she created with Fu's help at Georges in the 90's. Since Fu is here now, my wife requested it from the waitress. She was confused but we assured her that Fu knows what it is and can make it. He did and it was spectacular.
With these new updates, China Village has risen to OUR GoTo Chines HITW in Stockton! Those that know, Go, if you don't, please give it a try!
This meal was great. Service was equally good - very nice women served us and gave us refills, checked on us continually. They're English is not great but is fine. Go there ASAP for a great meal.
