Chinatown did a great job for lunch! Reasonable price , great service from Mario , and super tasty! One beef and black bean sauce and one sushi sampler. Really enjoyed it!

TLDR: Don't come here for the dimsum. At the best you'll be disappointed and at worst you'll be sick. My family and I used to come to this restaurant for dimsum almost every month pre-covid for years. It was in our dimsum rotation with New Fortune and It was a favorite of ours. When we saw that they brought it back recently we were so excited to have it again. What we expected was the pre-covid quality and flavor that we had come to love and instead what we got was $170 worth of food items that I would be remiss to feed my pets. Half of the dimsum we ordered was tasteless/stale (somewhat reminiscent of hot water) and the other half was naseua inducing and seemingly old or uncooked. I was the only one to eat the siu-mai out of my party because my sister and dad deduced that it was a bit too raw for their liking. After they said that it made perfect sense to me because the only thing that was coming to my mind while eating the dumpling was that it reminded me of the smell of walking through a zoo animal exhibit. Both of the pan-fried dumplings we ordered were left mostly uneaten because all of us spit out the bites we had taken once we realized how flavorless but offensive the filling was. The second pan-fried dumpling we had actually made me nauseated so I had to stop trying dumplings for a little while after that The quality of preparation for the dumplings was off as well. Each dumpling was likely to fall apart as soon as you would try to pick it up because the wrapper was sticking to everything except the dumpling filling itself. The har-gow is possibly one of the most confusing aspects of this because it seems impossible to mess up. The initial bite tasted like water and nothing else but slowly a funk we couldn't put our finger on built up in the after taste until my dad said, "you know what, this tastes like really old shrimp". Suffice to say we spit it out and didn't eat any more. I could go on and talk about my thoughts for every single item we ate as every one disappointed me massively. We loved the dimsum that this restaurant once had and are never going to come back here again.

As I went yesterday This place was okay as I've definitely got alot because of the description of most of the item sounded amazing but it wasn't all. As I got the beef kebab and the meat had no seasoning and I just drowned in BBQ sauce, the pork spring roll was basic especially with the food coloring pork to look like BBQ pork, the shrimp lover's dish was basic and Frozen peas and carrots as it's was rubber and using the orange sauce that's general tso's chicken sauce was on the other half. The better things was the fried pork dumpling as it was amazing and the shell was thick and full of meat and it was seasoned and the salt and pepper shrimp was amazing. The staff was wonderful, but I think this place use to be better but not really worth it now

My family likes to get dim sum. This place is one of our favorites because there is usually little to no wait and they have a great selection. They may have fewer carts than other places but we’ve found that the quality is high. We enjoy their dumpling cart because they’ll crisp them up on a griddle table side for you.

Decided to eat here while we evacuated our home town. The dim sum was pretty good. They have 2 types: the steamed and grilled. They go around asking you which type you prefer. We also ordered the honey dipped steak and spicy duck with steamed rice. The service is good for the most part. We had different waits for some reason. Out of the 3 or 4 we had there was one waitress who really wasn't welcoming but maybe that's just how she is.

I had a great lunch with my mom and dad. It’s always good to spend time with family and enjoy a great meal. Chinatown has been around forever. It’s one of Austin’s Classics.

Well executed Chinese food. The prices are a few dollars more than what I would expect to pay elsewhere but the food is tasty and well prepared without falling into the traps that Chinese food often leads to - overly greasy, too salty, or over sauced. All the items we ordered the just right from the lomein to the orange beef.

My family loves getting dim sum, and this place is one of our favorites. There's usually little to no wait, and the selection is excellent. While they may have fewer carts than other spots, the food quality is consistently high. We especially enjoy the dumpling cart, where they crisp up the dumplings on a grill at your table.

Very mediocre to frankly bad. Got the lunch box C for $21 and nothing was great on it. Happy family tasted bad, sushi roll was ok, egg roll and fried rice like cheap Chinese fast food. Even the jasmine tea flavor was subpar. Wife hated her fried.rixe. We love Asian food. Avoid this one... It used to be good a long time ago.

It was okay. The entrance is hard to find (it is on the side of the building, up the shorter stairs), and it is definitely not ADA compliant anywhere I could see. It is a very quiet restaurant... no music, and with very few patrons, not much in the way of background noise. The servers were nice enough. The food was fine. But it was BLAND. We got the hot and sour soup (all sour, no hot), egg drop soup (velvety and eggy, but nothing else to it), a pork egg roll (served with that sugary American sauce and hot mustard, very little pork), volcano shrimp (supposed to be spicy, but it was just that red sauce with some hair-fine shelters of red peppers- bland), and the seafood delight (bland and creamy). Oh, and a pot of green tea. Overall, it was fine. Even when we got chili paste, it was just kinda smoky and not spicy. It was fine though.

I really hate to leave a bad review for any place, but I just spent $55 on food that tasted worse than Panda Express I got the Westlake Beef which...was just broccoli & beef. It matched the menu description but I thought it would have a different taste. That aside, the oil my food was fried in definitely hadn't been changed in a week or three. We went at 4 on a weekend and were the only people in the restaurant. There were multiple signs pointing to this being an extremely mid experience, and I wish I had listened to any of them.

Came here during happy hour and I must say that I love a deal. From draft beers to bites to eat, it gives you a chance to try out a little of this and that that you normally wouldn't try such as their sushi rolls. So let me start off by saying take a moment and check in as they give you a free egg roll for doing so and who doesn't love a perk?). The guy serving us was working the bar as well as the tables in the bar. For what it's worth he was holding it down well. He was attentive and quick to answer any questions. Food came out hot and the serving size was large enough that we could of shared. Will definitely come back.

This is a family favorite, but it's not at this restaurant. Bland bland bland. No asian spices. Not even the standard receipe. Mongolian we've had doesn't have carrots, where are the hot dried chilis and green onions?? Sweet/salty sauce. Fried rice, where's the egg?? Chicken and cashews, where's the ginger, spices. I've been coming to Chinatown off and on for years. And this place has consistently been some of the best takeaway I have ordered in Austin. They're quick, efficient, and take requests/modifications easily. The vibe is incredibly chill when you eat in, as well.

Food is consistently good, I usually come here for sushi. I'll usually come alone and they serve me quickly and with good service. In my opinion it's a great neighborhood spot. Even though I moved away, I still drive back just for this place.

I've only had egg rolls from here. They are the best I've ever had! I have seen the dining area and the rest of the menu. It's a class act! The food looks a bit pricey, but if it's as good as their egg rolls, go. It's really is a step up from your regular Chinese restaurant. It kinda makes you feel underdressed. It's pretty far for me to go, but while I'm in the area, I gotta stop. I only hit the 3 star because I haven't had the main fare. I'm guessing it will change up when I go for a "real meal".

This is our neighborhood, go to spot when we are craving Chinese takeout. Big portions, reasonable prices, fresh ingredients, and a great selection of dishes.

Great place for fresh sushi. The. mixed poke bowl is an excellent choice, seaweed salad is a heaping serving of goodness, and I also really enjoyed the beef skewers. The service is prompt and it's typically nice and quiet since most orders seem to be for takeout.

This restaurant is so good it will make you want to go again and again and again. Good food runs in this family's blood. Whether it's Chinese, Japanese, or sushi you will not be disappointed. The restaurant itself has a great atmosphere for date night or family night. Or if you need take some business associates out this restaurant will impress. I promise it won't let you down. They also have a great bar with some wonderful exotic cocktails. My fav is the Mexican martini.. Their staff have been there for long time and give excellent service. They also own the restaurant STREET downstairs which has great sushi and the best Dim Sum in Austin. Ronald Cheng and his family are long time Austinites who have extensive Restaurant experience. They treat you like they would want to be treated so go EAT & DRINK at CHINATOWN & STREET you will be happy you did.

Lovely soup and egg rolls good price on simple stuff but you can get more interesting stuff for a little more. Friendly staff.

Upscale American Chinese Food - with a ton of sushi offerings as well. I am never happy to have sushi on the same menu with American Chinese. But I have learned to tolerate it. The sushi at the Westlake Hills location of Chinatown is actually pretty good. * * * The American Chinese offerings are just super. You are looking at a P.F. Chang's concept of excellent execution on dishes you have seen a million times before. (I am very big on P. F. Chang's.) The room is not quite as nice as P. F. Changs. But its nice enough. The kitchen is absolutely on a level with P. F. Chang's. This visit had me on a boneless BBQ Pork appetizer served in a lettuce cup. ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY ADDICTIVE. Better than the Chinese spareribs of my youth. (Chinese spareribs have really really gone downhill in recent years.) I marveled at each bite. My main was fried rice with everything in the house tossed in. I have had more savory fried rice as far as the fried rice itself. But the overall dish was outstanding. The serving was positively enormous. There were vast amounts of protein in the rice. The chicken and shrimp pieces were enormous and utterly packed with flavor. Better yet, there were a lot of them. This was total comfort food. I don't mind being comforted. I can work with that. * * * No one gets cutting edge gourmet points for eating American Chinese at Chinatown North. You aren't getting pig tails, kidneys and sea urchins in Mandarin squid ink. But sometimes food doesn't have to be fancy. It just has to be good. You pay a little more at Chinatown North than you would pay at the neighborhood takeout joint. But what you get is well worth while.

Ordered food to go and it was all great especially firecracker shrimp. Will definitely order from there again

Stopped in for lunch just before Christmas - didn't realize I entered the sports bar area until other people came through taking a "shortcut" to the restaurant after I had already sat and placed my order...oops. I was the only customer, and there was a funky smell to the place so I was nervous at first. But the waiter was very friendly and attentive and I ate some of the best chicken pad thai I have ever had. I could easily have taken half of it home since the portion was generous, but I couldn't help myself and ate the whole thing! The chicken was tender, the sauce flavorful, noodles were perfectly cooked - just excellent. Lunch with tip was about $18 - somewhat pricy, but worth it.

This place is an oldie and a classy goodie. The place is clean, sterile, and takes appropriate precautions for cleanliness. I am pleased with the staff efforts to make the experience feel safe. Peking Duck 3 ways is absolutely amazing. Now keep in mind, there are not many places in Austin that do this, so this adds extra points to this restaurant fir even attempting. In addition, they serve the courses in the correct order (we tested them). The decor is contemporary yet tradition and has wonderful views ***mental note, the duck bone soup is always served last traditionally*** The first course was the amazing skin and under meat of the duck with scallions and crepes or buns. Succulent meat of duck, crispy skin. The fine scallion straws really bring out the flavor. The second course of stir fry was okay, it was simplistic and a traditional stir fry. It was a stir fry. Good. But nothing super unique about it. The DUCK BONE soup is awesome. That flavor is simply amazing and will make you crave for more. There are no bad with the Peking suck meal. My only main critique is do not ever get it as take out, the soup was more hot and sour tasting. The meat from the stodgy was dry and hard. Overall this was an amazing experience with my family. I would also like to assert that this restaurant would normally be a 3 star however the staff is so sweet and accommodating that it was difficult to not give it a 4.

As a Latino, I experienced overtly different treatment compared to other patrons. This discriminatory behavior completely overshadowed any positive aspects of the food or ambiance. Sadly, I won't be returning, and I strongly advise against patronizing this establishment if you value fair and respectful treatment."

This is one of our favorite standby places since the food is always consistently good, the service is excellent, and the prices are very reasonable. Today I tried something new, I tried the Singapore noodle bowl which normally comes with shrimp but since I'm allergic they just added more chicken instead. The dish was listed with one pepper hot, but I really didn't feel much of any heat although I did taste the curry and I thought it was just the right amount of seasoning. The lunch special also includes a fried egg roll and soup of your choice, which is always a nice extra for any type of lunch menu.

I ate here for a friend's birthday a few weeks ago. Two of my friends ordered the sushi, and it was pretty good. I ordered the Thai Pepper Ginger Chicken, and it was very bland. It tasted like boiled chicken in oyster sauce with a few dried red peppers thrown on top. It was so gross I barely ate any. I can't believe I paid $19 for something so unpleasant. If you eat here, avoid the Chinese entrees.

skip the sushi. The scallop was horrendous and they gave me old tuna. .. it stunk. ginger and wasabi, was old, oxidized I haven't had their dimsum. that may be next, who knows

Food is pretty mid, but they've started charging absurd prices. Virtually impossible to get two basic entrees without spending over $40. Portions have gotten smaller, and the ingredients are much lower quality. The Lo Mein is now literally just noodles with a few tiny shreds of meat. $18 for about $1.50 worth of ingredients.

Ordered take - out the other night and got home to discover the order wasn't quite correct. After dinner and called to report the error they made it right with me very quickly. The food has always been consistently good from the north location which is closer to us and the few issues we have had have been fixed. I would add that dishes listed as spicy are not well spiced so we order the pepper oil to add ourselves. Access at the north location is difficult for my wife due to a physical handicap.

Went for lunch. Restaurant is upstairs so you will have to be able to climb stairs, you can use an entrance that is 2/3's of the way up the stairs but there still are stairs left to climb. Got seated immediately, service was very attentive. Many lunch specials are on the menu. Everyone in our party of 4 ordered something different and no one complained about the food which came out hot and fast. I ordered the kung pao shrimp which was not as spicy as I expected but still was tasty.

Nice, good quality take-out. We had a huge meal, a Saturday night treat. The food Arrived home fresh and hot. Pricing is on the high side of moderate.

Standard go to place for us. Everything is top notch. They will adjust dishes for personal preference. Service is stellar. Music is fun. A true Austin gem.

Ordered two fried rices for $41?! I ordered a pork fried rice and a crab fried rice. Normally I would justify a fairly high (still not THIS high price) for the crab, but it's IMITATION crab. What the heck justifies the price for rice, imitation crab, and some veggies? Confused. Disappointed. Broke.

Best American-style Chinese food in Austin. Best crab cheese (aka crab puff, wonton, etc) hot and sour soup, Singapore noodles, ma po tofu...c'mon! There's no comparison. You would expect this major capitol city to have tons o' delicious Chinese take-out... not so! Sorry, I don't make the rules but this is THE place to trust for classic American Chinese in the city. That being said, you must not miss Din Ho, which is an excellent, more traditionally Chinese restaurant in the nearby neighborhood, offering fantastic hotpot and Chinese bbq. Be a pleasure genius and eat @ both places regularly.

The food is wonderful I get the shrimp fried rice. I always have leftovers The services is great. I've been for dim sum on a Sunday once or twice. Omggg amazing!! Nice spot for sure. They have a really really nice wine selection.

Are you looking for traditional chinese ? This is the place for you Great service and great prices. We went during lunch. And it was empty. Sever was fast, friendly, and funny. Decoration was really pretty and unique for a typical chinese.

Usually order Chinese on Sunday nights every few weeks and Chinatown North is our go to place. Hard to find their website as when you Google them multiple different businesses pop up (austinchinatown.com). You can order to go either by calling in or from their website. They are open for dine in as well and have a sports bar downstairs from the restaurant which we haven't tried. Food: We are pretty predictable with our order. Moo shu chicken and some type of appetizer. Moo she chicken is flavorful and you get a lot for the order. The dumplings are a bit of a disappointment as the dough is really think and chewy instead of what we have gotten at most places. Their crab puffs are pretty good but more puff than filling. Service: they are quick and friendly and will bring the food curbside or you can go in for pick up. Overall a winner in our books.

Chinatown North Restaurant off Mopac We went to the Chinatown Restaurant off of Mopac last Thursday for dinner (Mar 2,23). We have been there many times & sometimes the food was delicious & ample portions, and then other times it was just very ho-hum-not good flavor, poor portions. But this time, it was AWFUL. The food had a very rancid taste (the special chef's beef dish - which is really orange beef) & the pork rice dish was also rancid tasting & mushy. The service was good but that is about it. So this will be our last trip to that restaurant for sure. So buyer beware going they are using old, rancid oil -YUK.

This restaurant takes me back in time to the big, over-the-top, kitschy American Chinese restaurants of my youth. That's the main thing it has going for it! Well, that and the booze. The food is classic American Chinese tasty, but not amazing. The service is decent, but a little slow and aloof. But the wine selection is good, and the full bar makes any basic cocktail -- including a good, strong dirty martini. It's the kind of place that cheugy GenX/Millennials can get together at for a double date, kick back in contented unhipness, and have a raucous good time.

I had Chinatown twice last week and it never disappoints! Every dish is delicious and the staff is always so friendly.

My wife and I used to come here about 10 years ago when dim sum was very good. We since moved away from Austin and came back. Chinatown North isn't the same as it used to be. Dim sum options (on a Saturday) were very limited - maybe around 10 varieties) and most of them were $10 or $11, which is unheard of ($4 - $6 is what I'm accustomed to). They weren't very good, either. We were the only Asians there around noontime, which is never a good sign if you're looking for good, authentic Chinese food. Tea was made from teabags, also not a great sign. I was very disappointed and sad, as this restaurant used to be pretty good but is now a completely different experience. One of the non-dim sum dishes we ordered (i.e. the salt and pepper tofu) were good, but we had come expecting dim sum carts, which are no longer a thing. The rest of our order was unsatisfactory to our standards. I hope they can some day return to their former glory. For now it seems they don't have a very good Cantonese chef preparing the food like they did 10 years ago. I'm guessing it's because the pandemic and the ever rising cost of living in Austin has made retaining a good kitchen staff very difficult. One good thing I can say was that service was excellent. I'd give service five stars, but my two stars is solely for the food.

It's been around forever and I think it's easy to overlook it. I cannot speak to the Dim Sum. However it is quality American Chinese food. The food is prepared fresh and the service is great. They also have lunch specials and you are definitely served quickly.

Stay away until they change this "new policy"! I've been to Chinatown Westlake on many occasions for many years, but this review also includes Chinatown's North location on Greystone Blvd. and MoPac because this new policy applies at both locations, I have a complaint that demonstrates just how cheap and greedy this place has become. I was busy working on an IT project for Portugal yesterday, so I sent a runner to get my lunch. I told the runner to ask for a tiny additional (2 oz.) thing of hot mustard. The runner was informed there would be an upcharge for this tiny additional item of $.50 which would also apply to any tiny soy sauce packet. This is beyond cheap and downright disgusting! You have better choices for great Chinese restaurants in the Austin area. Stay away from cheap greedy Chinatown until they change this "new policy."

Chinatown is a sleeper! All the good is great and made fresh. The little sushi spot upstairs was the old Street sushi that use to be below before Covid. Sushi always fresh and great! Great prices and quality! Super friendly staff and great service.

Mediocre at best! The empty parking lot should have been an indicator. I had tried this place years ago and I thought I'd give it another go. The Decor is really appropriate. is really cool and the service was good but the food is cheap packaged run-of-the-mill stuff and doesn't have that freshness feel. There are way better options.

There was nothing exceptional about the restaurant. It was an overpriced basic Chinese restaurant. The Kung Pao Beef tasted pretty good but I've had better. The worst part about the restaurant was the server who appeared to be on drugs. He was a horrible server. Why is he still working there?!? There is a location in Westlake, maybe it's better?

I stopped in on Wednesday night since my coworker let me know about the benefit going on at all three Chinatown locations to help support Hurricane Harvey relief. They also were accepting donations at the restaurant. That is awesome that this restaurant is giving back to the community. I was very happy to see that this place was packed with people who wanted support the Rockport Relief Fund. Be sure to go in using the door on the side near the parking lot. I made the mistake of going into Street Japanese restaurant. It's fine if you make that mistake since you can just go up the stairs to the right. We were seated quickly. We sat near a window. Woohoo! I ordered from the set dinner menu and selected my appetizer, soup and entree. I went with the imperial roll, egg drop soup and Hunan Beef. All were very good. The egg roll was cooked really nicely. Not soggy and had the right amount of crisp. Woohoo! The Hunan Beef had good flavor. I can't wait to come back to eat something else. Especially knowing that the restaurant gives back to the community and helps others in need. Why haven't I been here sooner?! I want to try their dim sum next.

Went to lunch and got a glass of wine, shrimp and pork dumpling, my mom got the sashimi, and I got the sushi lunch B. The dumplings were really good! The sushi tasted fresh and service was good. Nothing was amazing but nothing was bad!

I can't believe how much this place has changed since 2012 (my last review). Since 2015, even! We arrived around noon on a Sunday and were shocked that almost no one was around. Back in the day, we used to get to Chinatown by 10:45 (15 mins before dim sum started) and still be 10th or 11th in line - and coming at noon? Forget about it, at least a half hour wait. So, as we walked in without a line, confused, I asked my husband if there was a holiday I forgot about. When seated, while we ate all of the same foods we used to - nothing seemed the same. The food was in many cases cold or overcooked. I was really disappointed with the mashed up soup dumplings that stuck the lining too much to eat. It unfortunately made sense why there wasn't a huge rush. I've loved Chinatown for a long time - and I sincerely hope that this turns around. I'd love for it to be the restaurant I've known for many, many years.
