"Ronald Cheng opened Austin’s oldest-currently-operating Chinese restaurant in 1983. There are two locations, one in North Austin and the other out in Westlake, which are known for dishes such as dim sum dumplings and spicy Sichuan duck. The restaurant has also landed awards for its wine list, which runs deep. The patio has great iron furniture, while the interior is decorated with paper lanterns and gleaming wine bottles. Takeout orders can be placed online." - Melanie Haupt

When in Westlake, and looking for delicious Chinese this would be the spot. From the moment you enter everyone is smiling, music is playing, and it’s definitely upbeat! Service is almost instantly greeted with water, and someone asking what they can get for you. I love this kind of experience. Food is amazing, and the price is good. Love you guys!

We decided to try out this restaurant on a whim, but sadly, it didn’t meet our expectations. When we think of Chinese food, we imagine bold spices and rich flavors, but what we got was quite the opposite. The heavily battered and fried pepper steak lacked the authentic taste we were hoping for, and the chicken prepared in two styles also fell short of our flavor expectations. To emphasize our disappointment, we compared this restaurant to Panda Express, a fast-food chain. Surprisingly, even Panda Express offered more satisfying flavors than this place, which was a bit disheartening. Adding to our dissatisfaction was the pricing. We were quite surprised to see a single spring roll priced at $4, which felt like an overcharge. In conclusion, we genuinely hope the restaurant takes our feedback to heart and works on improving its culinary offerings. While we were initially excited to try something new, the lackluster flavors and pricing have left us with no desire to return. Our feedback is meant to be constructive, and we look forward to the possibility of a better dining experience in the future.

The food is DELICIOUS, but the waitress seemed to be a bit annoyed every time we needed something, she even sent some one else to clean our table, but the place is beautiful. Fortune cookie was empty 😢

Google
Overall, I'd rate this as "average". Everything was okay but nothing stood out. The wonton soup was the best thing out of my order. The broth was nice and salty and it included a lot of chives, with a fair amount of wontons. The wontons, themselves, had a tasty filling but were a bit thicker than I prefer. The Hot and Sour soup was a bit off. It had a nice amount of ingredients but it was a little bland. It didn't really have the classic, hot and sour taste that it looked like it was going to deliver. Lastly, the Kung Pao beef was good. It was more of a bell pepper centric kung pao than the spicy kind, with the baby corn, but the sauce was nice and the beef was tender. I might reorder from here but I would definitely double-check my other options first.

Google
Food was not bad, had the three cup chicken and orange beef. Both were surprisingly good and the beef had a crunch that reminded me of Taiwanese orange beef. Service was impeccable. The downside was when I got home and found melted plastic in the leftovers of the beef. Reading other reviews and it seemed like this wasn’t a one time issue. Makes me very reticent to go back.

Google
We found a piece of metal in our orange chicken!!!! Large wonton soup only had 4 wonton and tasted watered down. Noodles were mushy and the basil chicken was too salty to eat. The food is going in the trash For $80 this was a complete rip off for our family of 3 dinner

Trey Robinson

Google
Local staple for many years and a nice mix of Chinese food and sushi. We went as a family of 5 and spent $115 for 2 appetizers and 5 entrees but no drinks. The tia pepper Basil shrimp we are good as it was 15 years ago the first time we tried it. The Mongolian Beef was a little sweet, but still good. Our only real complaint was the bones in the spicy duck Szechuan.

Josh Christiane

Google
This is a pretty nice little Chinese place. The food is above average and the atmosphere is lovely. I recommend the Schezuan duck or their steamed pork and shrimp dim sum (dumplings). They have miso soup as a starter despite it not being on the menu, so just be sure to ask.

Allison R.

Yelp
Good food. Very fresh Interesting atmosphere Enjoy it! Service was professional! Love shrimp dishes!

Britt H.

Yelp
Longtime favorite traditional and Szechuan restaurant. One of Ronald Cheng's original places, along with the North version, which is equally excellent!

Paul H.

Yelp
Always a great choice or sushi and traditional dishes! Service is always very efficient. Food is always good, whether in house or takeaway.

Yelp
We went here on Christmas Day for dinner when no place else was open or everywhere else that was open was super crowded and busy. There was no wait so that was great! We ordered potstickers, Salt and Pepper Shrimp, and Sesame Chicken. Everything was good and the portions were also good sizes too. Thanks for having us for Christmas dinner!

Stephanie W.

Yelp
I want to give like 3.5 stars, but I have to pick 3 or 4 so I went with 3. This place is fine, the food was fine, the service was fine. Really everything was just "fine." Nothing blew my mind per se, although I do like the bamboo decorations and fountain outside (looks cute). This place is fairly large inside with a circle bar the middle. It's inviting enough, and they play classic oldies hits which I think is nice but kind of ages the place a bit. I had the avocado mamba roll which is made with eel and it was quite good (but again, not mind blowing). My mom had the sesame chicken which was like your standard upscale fast food quality sesame chicken served nicely - so it was good, but nothing new. The hot and sour soup again was good, but standard. Overall this place is fine, the food was satisfying enough but there's nothing particularly "special" about it. Our server also was good about checking in with us but had an air of needing to be somewhere else the whole time and would hurry off. We ate here in the middle of the day on a weekday, makes me wonder how it is when it's busier on weekends or in the evening.

Stephanie K.

Yelp
Escape downtown with this hidden gem, walking around a glittering stream surrounded by peaceful trees, it's elegant, relaxing, and delicious. My mom will love their fresh veggies and the most exceptional service within city limits. Prices are closer to small-town, without sacrificing quality. I really enjoyed the Thai Pepper Basil Shrimp - large, juicy shrimp that taste fresh, not frozen, cozied up next to crunchy veggies and lots of Texas jalapeño. Fried rice needs some work, but the egg roll and spicy mustard was divine!

Rich W.

Yelp
The sushi here is pretty fire, I particularly like the king salmon belly and yellowtail belly sashimi, which are very fatty and buttery cuts. The wasabi is pretty strong and fresh as well, always a good sign. Seaweed salad portions were very generous, also a plus. Hot and sour soup was nicely done. For an entree, I throughly savored the sea bass.

Med F.

Yelp
Haven't been there in over 10 years. Ordered the same dish I had years ago and was as delicious as I remember it. Very reasonable prices and dry fast and good service. Very nicely appointed restaurant.

Elvira A.

Yelp
Love this beautiful restaurant! From the moment I walked in the host was super friendly. I was only going to place an order to go, while enjoying a cold Kirin Ichiban. The vibe was so cool that I decided to eat lunch there. They have amazing lunch specials, so that was perfect. Everyone was great, and offered recommendations. Had an amazing sushi lunch! Will definitely be returning.

Michael L.

Yelp
I have been in search of quality chinese food in my area and may have finally found my spot. however, some of the dishes can be hit or miss. I enjoyed the mongolian beef, and pork moo shu. The oolong tea duck was not flavored to my liking. The service is generally very good, and there is ample parking.

Ruth Y.

Yelp
One of my favorite spots for Chinese food! FOOD: I have ordered Uber Eats several times from this place and typically, I get their sesame chicken to play it safe. I am never disappointed by it, other than the fact that it could use more broccoli. I finally got to dine in on a Sunday early afternoon, during which we were the only customers for the first 20 minutes or so. Surprisingly, their Szechuan edamame was one of the best edamame that I have ever had. With its delicious sauce, smallest kick of spice. and slight crunch without being undercooked, this was a perfect appetizer. Checking into the location via Yelp gave me an offer for free soup, so I got a wonton soup. The soup was tasty and nicely seasoned with wontons that weren't too small or wrapper-heavy, scallions, and some bok choy. Per the waiter's recommendation, I ordered the three cup chicken which also had a delicious sauce and since it is made with dark meat, was flavorful and had a nice chew. The dish also has Thai basil and slices of ginger in it. Lastly, this might be unimportant to some people, but I always appreciate that their rice is never clumpy or mushy or hard. Their portions are also always huge - it always turns into leftovers for me. SERVICE: The waiter was very friendly and checked in on us regularly. Everything, including the food, was efficiently timed without feeling rushed. LOCATION: The restaurant has pretty exterior decor with a waterfall-like structure and some nice gardening out front. The place itself is huge with colorful lanterns and tall wine racks. I like that it is a happy medium between not too bougie, but not run-down. PARKING: They are located in a plaza so the parking lot has plenty of spaces!

Christine M.

Yelp
Love this place, always great food and great service! Lovely atmosphere, their menu is perfect for everything you maybe craving, I especially love how they can customize your order to your needs.

Ashton K.

Yelp
The food and service was actually pretty good but I used the restroom and when I exited the restroom I was actually in China. I don't know how to get home? Can some one help me?

Sharon F.

Yelp
The food is always perfect. Chinatown Fried rice is the best, fresh and the meats in it are perfect. Wonton soup is one of our must have with the fried egg rolls. We normally do take out and it's always, hot, fresh and just perfect. The ambience inside though is very special. Highly recommend. And you can't beet the service.

Rushika P.

Yelp
Food- we had dumplings, spring rolls, Singapore noodles and a chicken curry. All mediocre. Service- poor. Not a smile. Gave us stale wine. We ordered slowly and could see her complain about that! Ambiance- it's old and boring! Would never go again

Jarod N.

Yelp
The best Chinese food that is not way far north. Super authentic American Chinese food with terrific sushi. Our family's go-to for a nice Chinese meal

Eric L.

Yelp
The two dishes with sauces tasted a little burnt and were too salty. The lo mein was kinda flavorless and the shrimp was overcooked. Crab puffs were ok but one had no filling and edges were burnt. Son found a hair in sesame chicken. Disappointed as it was not cheap.

Jared P.

Yelp
Great food, spectacular service and nice atmosphere. Went on a Friday night, not as busy as I expected. Great quality ingredients to make this restaurant the best by far. Definitely worth a try.

Johnny H.

Yelp
Chinatown is consistent with their food. Portion sizes are shrinking every time I go there. This is my go to spot in Austin. I went in on 7/23 and paid with cash and Guy didn't give me my change back. Very weird and imposing. 5 out of 10.

Daniel O.

Yelp
For how much lesser Chinese there is in this town this is a solid option. Love the crispy Shanghai egg rolls, the seafood soup for 2 is epic. Scallion wontons are delicious- portobello shrimp solid go to for me. All around solid. People inside are incredibly nice; consistently amazing customer service.

Margaret B.

Yelp
We love Chinatown! Easy weekday meal with the fam. Food is delicious. The spicy mustard is awesome!

Sam N.

Yelp
Used to be way better! I'm disappointed because this used to be one of my top go to Chinese restaurant in Austin. Good quality has gone downhill which is a bummer!

Hudson D.

Yelp
The food was great and the service was too the the bathroom was kinda disgusting but still a great place to eat.

Adriel C.

Yelp
Food was great, I got the gluten free fried rice. This place is really gluten free friendly. The service will walk you through what's gluten free or not. Ambience was really nice, the mood was great.

Jane O.

Yelp
Hot and sour soup is some of the best I've ever had. General Tsos Chicken was also above average. Shanghai Egg Roll was tasty but dripping with grease. The white rice was above average. Soft and fluffy and very fresh. Favor delivered faster than estimated. Overall good experience. I'm stuffed and half my entree is in the fridge for tomorrow's lunch.

Rudy M.

Yelp
Ok two part review coming at you. First let me start with the positive. The food was good, it was super flavorful and made to order, I had the Mongolian beef. I'd recommend it, my wife and daughters had the California roll which they said was also good. Based on the food it's recommended. Part 2 the service was less than hospitable, waitress seemed to be in a bad mood, not very helpful or attentive, that is until it was time to pay the bill then she was more than happy to help. I figure it was tip driven. Overall we have gone back but avoid that waitress

Dawn S.

Yelp
My 17 year old nephew and I decided to grab some food so we headed to Chinatown. He knew exactly what he wanted; I could have ordered for him as he gets the same thing every time: Sesame Chicken. I decided to order sushi. I haven't had it in months. I ordered the Mexicano roll (see description in photos). Each entree was 16.00- kinda pricey ‍but we were in Westlake. I guess that makes a difference? I did check out the lunch menu and items seem to be more reasonable (around 9 bucks). I did take a gander at the drink menu to perhaps grab a glass of wine...again on the expensive side. The glasses were all about 9/10 bucks. I decided to stick with water and get a whole bottle after dinner at Trader Joe's . *Covid update: all employees wore masks. Each table had hand sanitizer on it. They seemed to be doing a fairly large amount of take out. The bar was "hopping" as far as covid standards go. It seemed full and people were enjoying dinner and a drink at the bar. OVERALL: I would go again and perhaps try lunch. If you aren't on a budget, go give this place a try. Our food was excellent and the service was great too!

Jesse G.

Yelp
Great food and drinks, I expected so much less from a place that is in the eye care business. On the flip side, terrible selection of eyeglasses and the optometrist's eye test consisted of looking at a menu and a check.

Christian G.

Yelp
Being a solo party found myself waiting by the door for a period of time (say 10 minutes) before a busboy guided me to a table (wasn't short on staff). Food was okay, nonetheless tipped the young man who provided service.

Zanah D.

Yelp
I've had some hit and miss experiences here with takeout food during the pandemic height times but that's to be expected, overall I've lived in this area of Austin for 10 years and have always loved this place. Honestly we can depend on this place for some consistently good takeout 9 times out of 10 with no issues and even the delivery service is great. The owner is also super nice and has checked on our table before while dining in, and we have experienced consistent good service with wait staff and friendly atmosphere overall with takeout and hostess. I had their sushi last night and it was super fresh, it was reasonably priced at $10-12 for a well sized roll so we were happy. I know they can get very busy at times and overall get swamped in orders but they are one of the most consistent restaurants in this area.

Jim H.

Yelp
Stay away! I've been to Chinatown Westlake on many occasions for many years. I agree with the previous reviewer who states their portions are getting smaller by the visit. I have an additional complaint that shows just how cheap and greedy this place has become. I was busy working on a project for Portugal yesterday, so I sent a runner to get my lunch. I told the runner to ask for a tiny additional (2 oz.) thing of hot mustard. The runner was informed there would be an upcharge for this tiny item of $.50 which also would apply to any tiny soy sauce packet. This is beyond disgusting! You have better choices for great Chinese restaurants in the Austin area. Stay away from cheap greedy Chinatown.

Bonnie R.

Yelp
We stopped here for dinner with friends as a last minute thought. It had been years since any of us had eaten here. There wasn't many patrons at the restaurant that Saturday night. We were all very pleased with the food. All 7 of us ordered something different and it was all delicious. We will return!

Barbara S.

Yelp
It's way, way, way too hit or miss. We went fairly recently and it was fine--not great but fine-- so I was ready to write a better review. However, I was reminded once again very hard this week when we went back, that they just don't care (or even pretend to care) about their customers at all. Possibly it's better when the owner is there? I'm done. Life is too short.

Tony M.

Yelp
Excellent Chinese cuisine served fresh quick and delicious. Specialty orders no problemo .

Mike G.

Yelp
Always a very easy choice. Very consistent, high quality. To-go and packaging is excellent. Nice ambiance when dining there.

Nancy H.

Yelp
Shockingly awful food!!! Veg egg rolls thick, thick batter. Buddha delight veg dish supposedly in brown sauce but really yuck greasy broth with NO flavor! Hunan chicken palatable.

Lexi M.

Yelp
This is consistently such a fantastic place for sushi at lunch. They have a lunch menu that has great deals and value for the portions and quality. The sushi chef is super friendly and will create whatever sushi your heart desires as well. Especially nice if you sit at the bar. I had the sushi B dish today and have in the past got the bento box which is also tasty and plentiful. It's a nice classy setting to take clients out to or have a casual lunch with the girls with some sake or wine. They do have an outdoor patio in front that is a tranquil place to eat outside. I like to stop in for lunch followed by a massage at the Chinese place down the way in the same parking lot.

Vernon T.

Yelp
After 30+ years - They still have it. the food was terrific...salmon in truffle oil, spicy spider roll incredible and always the Chef's Special Beef and Chinatown Fried Rice just great

Tyler R.

Yelp
We've ordered take-out twice now. Food is good and no complaints of the quality. Does seem like the price is a little expensive. Unsure if we will order it again.

I l.

Yelp
This place was packed during holidays and I am unsure why. The general tso was overcooked and sopping with sugary sauce. The chef beef special had zero meat....same over fried with sauce. The waitress was awful and never refilled glasses or checked in and when we finally got her attention she had a pissed off look and was irritated that we would want anything. The coffee table in waiting area is so full of fingerprints and dust on the silvery parts and there was a dirty dust pan just sitting in the area. Yuck.

Polly M.

Yelp
Neighborhood restaurant - great for carry out as well as dine in. Works for us - staff is always cordial.

Kimberly V.

Yelp
We came in on Saturday around 3, it was nice, not too crowded. Got seated quickly & nicely distanced from others. All tables had hand sanitizer & all staff had masks on. The food was nice (for TX anyway) & service was great. We will definitely enjoy coming back here.

Tania R.

Yelp
This was single handedly the worst food I've had in Austin. I got their chili wontons, shanghai pork dumplings and kung pao chicken. Their chili wontons were flavorless, chili oil was bitter and the wrapper of the wonton was way too thick. The shanghai pork dumplings were RAW. Like i'm talking pink meat, not cooked at all. We brought it up to a worker at the bar and his response was "yeah that sometimes happens". And lastly the chicken was chewy, like a gummy bear, it felt like we were eating old, fake chicken. When we asked the waitress if we could switch it out for kung pao tofu instead, she proceeded to show us a bit of attitude for the rest of our stay. Not to mention the kung pao only tasted like soy sauce. Overall I would never come back, food and service were terrible.

Methods G.

Yelp
This place is actually pretty good. The shrimp volcano is awesome- highly recommended it

Dana B.

Yelp
Honestly, the meal was offensive. I'm not sure when they originally made our General Tso's chicken- but I'm pretty sure it wasn't today. I'm convinced it was leftover chicken they found at the back of the fridge and then threw in a microwave to reheat. Think: old, hard the chew, sadness. It had a soft, mushy coating with a jaw breaker (hopefully chicken?) inside. We ordered this through an app, with priority delivery. It arrived quickly, so this wasn't a delivery issue. I made the grave mistake of ordering 2 dishes with the General Tso's so I promise you- this was the most disappointing $40 I've ever spent. I'm giving 2 stars because the rice and crab Rangoons were fine. It's the only thing we could eat. All in all, I spent $60 on a meal consisting of complimentary rice and 6 crab rangoons. Never again. I'll be back to ordering from Jade or Bamboo Bistro. This was just complete nonsense.

Samuel C.

Yelp
Samuel C the Codger: America has lost all of its traditional standards. When I was a young man, Chinese restaurants were Chinese restaurants and Japanese restaurants were Japanese restaurants. When you wanted beef with broccoli you went to a Chinese Restaurant. When you wanted tempura you went to a Japanese restaurant. It was good for us and we liked it that way. Chinatown is a combination American Chinese restaurant and Sushi Bar. Put two cuisines like that in the same place and no good will come of it. Do you know what's wrong with the youth of today? Pan-Asian restaurants, that's what! Oh, yeah, Pan-Asian restaurants, and hip-hop! Oh yeah, make that Pan-Asian restaurants, hip-hop and cell phones! Samuel C the Rationalist: In Japan, sushi and hot food are generally served at different restaurants. It is totally arbitrary to serve raw fish in the same restaurant with hot skewers of food. By that standard, there is no difference between mixing sushi with tempura and mixing sushi with General Tso's chicken. So in principle, a restaurant that serves both Chinese food and sushi ought to be able to do both okay. Samuel C the Yelp Reviewer: Most Pan-Asian restaurants are pretty mediocre. But Chinatown is a strong exception to the rule. The Chinese food is respectable. The sushi is excellent. Traditionally, in Pan-Asian restaurants, it is the sushi quality that fails first. If the raw fish is good, you can usually be pretty confident about everything else. Here the raw fish is good, and everything else matches. Samuel C the Keep Austin Weirdo: The Rollingwood Chinatown has one of the coolest sculpture gardens of any Austin restaurant. The back of the restaurant has a huge plate glass window that opens up on to West Lake Hills forest and a tremendous collection of random weirdness. They have a full fake moon. They have a flying pig. There is a crab in a beach chair. They have a bathroom sink. They have a toucan. They have a flamingo. Frankly, for in-your-face Austin strangeness, the sculpture garden makes Magnolia Cafe look as straight and narrow as a Chili's. Samuel C the Four Headed Monster: I still don't like eating at Chinese-Japanese fusion places. But the food at Chinatown is legitimately creditable. The back garden gives them total class. So if the food is good, the room is good and the coolness factor is high, then Samuel C says just do it. And frankly, given how weak the competing Rollingwood/West Lake Hills restaurants tend to be, Chinatown shines like a beacon in the night as the place to spend your Eanes District eating-out dollar.

Samantha S.

Yelp
The company I work for tends to order from this restaurant a lot, so I've tried a lot of different things here, and have found that their sushi options are much, much better than their Chinese food, so it's a shame they don't market themselves as a sushi restaurant. This rating is for their sushi.

Nicole P.

Yelp
We have been here a few times, but after last night, it will be our last. Service was horrible and food tasted old and reheated. NOT editable, I ordered the salt and pepper shrimp, normally fresh and delicious. Last night it was so tough and the breading was old, like it was cooked and then reheated in a microwaved later. When my daughter asked if she could swap out Lo Mein noodles for rice our server said it would be a $5 upcharge for the noodles, when in fact, I know this is not true because my son asked for the same substitution and it was free the visit before this one. When I said "nope!" to the upcharge, our server did not check on us again and when we were trying to leave, getting the bill taken care of took 10 minutes. RIDICULOUS! If you choose to go into the restaurant industry your goal and focus should be making decent food that people can eat and enjoy AND offer pleasant, friendly service. Unfortunately, this place could not do either.

Kate W.

Yelp
Our favorite Chinese Take-out! Always so yummy & fast! We've dined in & gotten carry out multiple times and are always happy.

Bette H.

Yelp
Great food. Admittedly, we tend to order mostly the same items because it's what we like. But we've never had anything bad at Chinatown. The service is good and to go orders are accurate.
