Chin’s Szechwan Returns to Carlsbad Village - Eater San Diego

"Chin’s Szechwan has returned to Carlsbad after a seven-year hiatus. The Chinese restaurant was a fixture in Carlsbad Village since the mid-80s, but shuttered in 2013 and was replaced by Blue Ocean Sushi Bar. Chin’s now has a mini-empire in North County, with locations in Encinitas, Oceanside, Vista, and Rancho Bernardo." - Candice Woo

I've been daydreaming of going to Chin's for over 8 years now. I finally found the opportunity to make it in for dinner on our way home from San Diego. This place was pretty good and not too bad. The pot stickers were amazing. They melted in my mouth like smooth butter on a warm Georgia day sitting in a Krogers parking lot. The noodles were pretty good and the spicy Honey chicken was awesome. The service was really nice too. All of the staff were super friendly. Ok Bye

Google
Ordered take out. I thought prices were high initially but portions were quite large so 2 adults could easily share an entree especially if you get an appetizer too. Food was nicely packaged and done promptly after ordering online. Pictured is cashew chicken. Seemed like it was fresh food also, not reheated. Also tried sweet and sour chicken, pot stickers, and egg rolls. Of note sweet and sour chicken sauce was served already on the chicken.

Google
Excellent Chinese food in Carlsbad !! Well spiced. Freshly made. Highly recommend the hot and sour soup and the Green beans with spicy beef. The prices are high but the portions are large and generous.

This Chinese restaurant is so cute! The staff was wonderful and the food was amazing. The servers really enhance the experience by making sure you feel welcomed and they are very professional about serving your food. Our server John Smith was very funny and made sure we had everything we needed. He was super attentive! The food was delicious and I highly recommend getting the string beans with pork. It was my favorite dish! My boyfriend loved the wonton soup. I highly recommend checking this place out!

Google
We had a very disappointing experience here on Father’s Day with a party of 8. From the moment we arrived around 5:00 pm, we were told we needed to be done by 6:30 pm because they had to put two tables together for us, which felt rushed and unwelcoming. The service was poor from start to finish. Our server accidentally spilled a drink on my mom and didn’t seem very apologetic. The food took a very long time to arrive, and they completely forgot to bring out meals for both my mom and my sister in law, even after we reminded them multiple times. Their plates were finally brought out after everyone else had already finished eating. Nobody checked on us for drink refills or to see how things were going. For a bill that totaled around $340, we still left a $40 tip out of courtesy, though I honestly didn’t feel it was deserved. The food itself wasn’t anything special either. Overall, we were extremely disappointed and wish we had gone somewhere else. We definitely won’t be coming back.

Google
The best, most generous waiter! Sweet and kind. Made for an outstanding place to celebrate a graduation. Wish I had gotten his name. Wonderful atmosphere. Only taking a star from food because I’m Chinese and have eaten a lot of delicious foods- but overall very good!

Yelp
Was alright. Happy to find a Sichuan place in Carlsbad, but it didn't end up tasting like Sichuan people actually made the food. You don't have to speak Chinese to eat here - many servers speak English/are bilingual. They also provide white rice free of charge, which is a nice touch. Chin's has a small parking lot it shares with a couple other businesses, but generally easy to get a spot. Szechwan Garlic Pork - more veggies than pork. This was alright, though a pretty simple dish in general. A bit of spice, but nothing overwhelming. Mapo Tofu - average. Little to no numbing spice, and even came a little sweet. Some mapo tofu variations do come like that, but I'm personally not a fan. Our server let us know adding pork to the recipe came free of charge, which was a plus. Szechwan Braised String Beans - This was the best thing we ordered, but I'd still give it a 3/5. A bit of spice but it wasn't numbing. I liked the classic texture of stir fried string beans. Overall, Chin's is best for people who haven't been exposed to Sichuan cuisine. I wasn't able to try many of the Sichuan classics, but based on our experience, I probably won't be back to do that.

Yelp
We ordered take out from here via DoorDash and the food was surprisingly tasty. Sweet and sour pork - big pieces of pork, good Hot and sour soup - husband enjoyed this Steamed rice x 2 Szechuan garlic eggplant and tofu - this was flavorful and enjoyed the tofu very much

Yelp
After a long day and long drive, we ordered delivery from Chin's website - to ease in to our first night in Oceanside. Delicious potstickers and Kung Pao chicken to share. Generous portions. Speedy delivery.

Yelp
Our go to spot! The atmosphere is so clean, welcoming and warm - we love it here! The service is always perfect, we are welcomed so quickly and love how everything is so clean and proper - true white glove service! The orange chicken is our favorite - but everyone should always order the dumplings and cream cheese wontons. They always do a great job packing the to go for you - love it! Family friendly with good prices, we will always come back to our favorite spot :)

Yelp
I don't live in the area, but my family vacations in Carlsbad often. Whenever we are in town we always have at least one meal at Chin's! The staff, service, food, flavors and other "regular customers" are always a delight. This is our families favorite comfort food spot. We always recommend Chin's to anyone who is going to the area.

Mike C.

Yelp
Have visited this place twice and both times the service was fast and efficient. The food was fairly decent as well. I got the lunch special which was chicken sweet and spicy dish. Good portion and tasted good. I have no hesitation recommending the Chin's. They do keep the establishment wry clean which is a plus. Always wiping down the tables with some sort of solution. The staff was always checking to see if you needed anything and keeping g water glass filled.

Yelp
My family and I went in for Father's Day, since my Dad really wanted Chinese, and we remember Chin's being super good. It definitely did not disappoint! Everything we had was fantastic, flavorful, and not over sauced/fried like a lot of other Chinese restaurants can be. The service was excellent; super attentive, kind, and quick! Inside of the restaurant was immaculately clean, and had fun decorations. We will be back! My favourite was the tangerine chicken, it was incredible.

Yelp
First time visit. We were looking for good Chinese food and we found it! The menu is comprehensive. The service was very friendly and the restaurant was immaculately clean. Decorated very nicely unlike most Chinese restaurants. I had cashew chicken which came with fried rice that was good but unremarkable. The main dish was very, very good and it also included a fresh cucumber salad that was incredibly yummy. My wife had Kung Pao chicken. She said it was very good. The star of the meal were the pot stickers we ordered as an appetizer. My gosh they were the best I've ever had. Perfectly cooked and served with tastiest dipping sauce. We will definitely be back. The only down side was the price. Lunch for 2 was over $60 but again the food was delicious.
google avatar

Mimi M.

Yelp
Staff are very friendly - thank you Peggy you are very helpful. The food are very good - not quite sure if there is chinese restaurant in the area. The decoration are very classy and the ambiance is very pleasant. Parking is easy.

Yelp
stopped by chin's on our way home to oc from sd & it was nothing short of amazing food & service. we felt bad about coming in within the hour of closing time & I'm really not the type of person to ever do that (esp. remembering my time in food service when I was younger) but the staff was nonetheless really kind! The ambiance was really nice & perfect for a calm nice date night. We ordered the honey spicy sesame chicken which is supposed to be the equivalent of orange chicken I suppose, and their chicken lo mein noodles, with a side of rice. Everything was super super tasty! it's not pictured but I did ask for chili and woooow....so good. I love that the spice is "buildable" in the sense that depends on the amount you put lol. i was later informed by our server that we could ask to make items spicy which is good to know. overall really great place, couldn't recommend trying this place out more.

Yelp
This place gets 4 stars as I really, really enjoyed the food and the flavors. We dropped in on graduation night and placed a very large to go order. It was handled with professionalism and grace by the older oriental lady handling the register. She was very adept, asking all the right questions and letting us know when to move on to the next item. We got everything from egg rolls to fried wonton, spicy hot kung Pau chicken to spicy beef, house made special fried rice, pot stickers, and Pretty much anything else you could imagine. Now for the bad, we have some people who don't like spice and some of us who really do. I started in order, from zero spice to hottest dishes, they have a spice level from 0 to 5. I asked for 5 on one dish and she was adamant that I couldn't do 5 and was hesitant but put it in at 4. Now to be fair, I really eat a lot of spicy foods and Thai 5 is rough as hell but tolerable. Chins 4 was to me, Thai 1 at best. There were also a few dishes that were supposed to be zero and they spiced, a few that the number on the spice was lower on the container than we asked for. When I ask for a spice, give it me please, I don't care how many wussies come in and then complain, I ain't one of them. In closing, I would absolutely come here again and again, it was great. I wish they would open one on Oahu.

Yelp
I went here with my mom after shopping at the nearby outlets. I was recommended this place by a friend who is from San Diego. Great place - good atmosphere and attentive waitstaff who answered my mom and I's questions about the menu. The food was great and there was more food that came out than we expected - which was good because of the variety! I got some fried pork dish and my mom got walnut shrimp, both of them were cooked well and tasted like what we expected.

Yelp
I've been going to the various Chins locations for over 20 years now, but this was my first time visiting this location in Carlsbad since it took over this spot from another restaurant. I really love how they refreshed the decor, it has such a nice ambiance. We ordered a lot of food because we knew we wouldn't have time to prepare dinner later, so we had quite a feast. As usual, the quality and great service was consistent with all of the Chins locations and we had a wonderful experience. We feasted on: Imperial Noodle Soup (we love that there's an option to add noodles to any of the soups!) Salt & Pepper Wings Pot Stickers Mapo Tofu Mala 3 Flavors We also loved that you can adjust the spice on these dishes 1-5, so we went for a spicy level 4 which was just perfect. We loved everything we tried and are so happy we have enough for dinner too since the portions are so big!

Yelp
I was surprised after reading all the reviews! 3.5/5 stars. This place is okay for Americanized Chinese food, but it is not authentic. Maybe that' is why I did not enjoy the food, while there were many others eating happily. I know Authentic Chinese dishes, and dishes here were overly sweet and clearly made for a tourist's palate. I will say the lunch special was generously portioned, and service was nice. I ordered the crispy shrimp and walnut shrimp. Both were too sweet to my liking. I also did not expect to eat a cream cheese wonton (a classic "Asian" offering at Americanized places, but would never be found at an authentic place). When we were given soup, I got a dirty spoon that had food remnants on it. The waitress did not say sorry or provide me an alternative soup soon. I think Panda Express has better food.
google avatar

Dani M.

Yelp
Big portions! Get service and really enjoy the food here. We got their chicken lo mein, sweet and sour chicken and of course some ragoons! Everything always tastes very fresh!
google avatar

Lindsay L.

Yelp
This was a nice first visit. When you walk into the restaurant you'd be pretty pleased of the decor in contrast to how it looks from the outside. The decor was pleasant and calming. I like how the restaurant somewhat immerses you into the culture by its aesthetic. The food was pretty good. My friend and I split the cream cheese wontons as an appetizer. We got the 10 count and ate all of them. I ordered the chicken and shrimp chow mein. It was pretty tasty. I love me a good chow mein so I was very content especially being so hungry. I thought I would have left overs but I didn't. Overall. It wasn't a bad experience. It makes a good spot for lunch or a chill dinner.

Yelp
Super great Chinese food. Super big potions. Great flavor & good service. My go to spot now. In one month I went 3 times

Jill M.

Yelp
My husband and I had lunch at Chins Carlsbad today. I had Kung Pao Chicken and he had garlic chicken. We both had the "dinner" servings. ALOT of food! Delicious! So fresh and tasty. Came with white rice and we ordered hot and sour soup. Brought so much home. Peggy was our server. So nice and efficient. Restaurant very clean and pretty. Go there! It's been awhile but we will for sure be back soon!

Yelp
Great Americanized Chinese food. Quick service, good food and reasonable prices. Centrally located in Carlsbad village this is one of a handful of Chins I have been to. They are always consistent and always good. Food is always fresh and flavorful.

Michael H.

Yelp
We ordered in and the food was really great. Authentic Chinese oodle are a good price. That was fast.
google avatar

Nicole D.

Yelp
*****EAT HERE**** We order from here at least once a month and the food is always hot and delicious! We get the Pro Hu (Hot Burned Pork) and it is so moist and spicy and tasty. The portion for this dish is so big. It feeds two for dinner and enough left over for at least two lunches each after that. We also get the Lo Mein with Vegetables. This is all a huge delicious portion. SO much vegetables. We love the Pork Wonton Crisps and also the regular Wonton Crisps. These always taste fresh and aren't oily at all. We never experience a sick MSG feeling after eating here. Everything is of high quality. We are repeat customers!

Yelp
My favorite new Chinese restaurant! Both the Carlsbad and Vista locations I have tried were terrific. Authentic cuisine and the decor in these locations belie the exterior. Beautiful interiors.
google avatar

Lei P.

Yelp
Food and service is always great. As a vegetarian, I appreciate the selection of items on their menu.
google avatar

Mark C.

Yelp
Food was really good. Chicken was a bit too salty tho. Service was amazing. Always refilling waters without us asking, and really going the extra mile to serve us. Ambiance is a bit small, but was able to fit a party of 10 people. Nice soothing piano music in the background.

Richard T.

Yelp
After a very bad experience at Chin's Vista we decided to give Chin's Carlsbad a try. We were very happy with the service as well as the dishes we ordered. The waitresses were very attentive . We will be going back
google avatar

Connie S.

Yelp
Wonderful flavorful Szechwan Chinese cuisine. Excellent and attentive services. Food was served hot and quick. Each dish was tasty and great flavors. For sure there is a kick in the spice level. We chose level 3 and they were just right for us. Szechwan cuisine goes steps over typical Chinese dishes. We really enjoyed the food and the entire experience.

Jerome L.

Yelp
We had an excellent dinner with many excellent items: 1) garlic eggplant: 5/5.. tender perfect texture with savory garlic sauce. True masterpiece 2) Szechuan green beans:5/5. Huge plate of large fresh looking green beans, sautéed with mildly spicy sauce. 3) imperial shrimp duo. 5/5. Many shrimps and a few scallops nicely sautéed in milder white sauce with huge broccoli and other veggies. 4) kung pao trio: 4/5. Shrimp, scallops and chicken in spicy red sauce with peanuts. A little over sauced and maybe a little too sweet for non-American palates. Service was fantastic: friendly, efficient, helpful, supremely professional. We had a bad takeout experience a year ago but gave them another chance because all the other yelpers gave high marks. And the. Restaurant decor is actually quite lovely and upscale looking. Glad we went back.
google avatar

Analisa S.

Yelp
Ordered lunch take out from Chin's Szechwan via Yelp a few weeks ago and it was great! Highly recommend getting their lunch specials as it comes with an entree, rice, and additional sides picked by the chef. A great deal for the price, quantity and quality of food.
google avatar

Bradley C.

Yelp
First, the restaurant is beautiful. Secondly the man wants woman waiting in the table were efficient, friendly, and personable. The lunch myth was confusing. There were two prices, lunch and dinner. We thought that lunch just included only the entre, but included rice, soup, eggroll, and cheese filled wonton. We ordered tangerine chicken and noodle lunches. We ordered a a regular dinner entre of crispy pork, intending to take much of it home. The waitress, owner?, asked the heat level, 1-5. We opted for 4. The lunches arrived, which we split, which were more than we could possibly eat. The crispy pork came which was piled high on a large plate. Everything was delicious and really spicy like we love. The man waiter packed up the leftovers while carrying on a friendly conversation. This place is worth the drive to Carlsbad from San Clemente.
google avatar

Yelp
We never had Asian food in Carlsbad before so I thought now is the time to try it! The resturant was elegant and upscale ! It was clean and pleasing to look at! You had chop sticks and a fork with a pretty red cloth napkin. We went with the PU PU platter that served two as there was two of each item Shrimp, chicken, beef, egg rolls, Wanton, and pork! Loved the Wanton. Most definitely recommend Chins! Keep this business going.. Thumbs up

Eric K.

Yelp
Met friends here for a Sunday lunch. Really nothing I was impressed with- had an appetizer, soup, & entree. Nothing memorable or a standout, but nothing I hated either. Overall, it was ok, but I won't be rushing to return.
google avatar

Nancy D.

Yelp
My friend and I stopped by here on impulse and we're glad we did. We both had different lunch specials and they were freshly made and quite tasty. The service was perfect and the ambiance had that traditional Asian vibe that we used to enjoy in Chinatown SF.
google avatar

Shari M.

Yelp
Been eating here for years. Foods above average, fresh and prepared well. Love the egg foo yung.

Yelp
Great good and superior service! Would go back! So much good! We had a full Dinner of left overs for the next day

Yelp
Fast, good service. Delicious food, family style and very saucy!! There were 8 of us and we got seated no problem.

Yelp
Excellent food and service. Newly remodeled so light and bright. The staff could not be friendlier. The lunch portions with excellent quality ingredients. Very generous lunch portions. Will be back. Thank you

Yelp
Pretty decent Chinese restaurant with nice decor. Overall pretty good for the Carlsbad area which I was surprised. We got the Szechwan garlic chicken and Kung Pao Chicken. Neither was really spicy at a level 4 but the flavor was good so next time we will be getting a 5 for that kick.

Yelp
We made a reservation for this location on OpenTable. When we showed up, there was an awkward crowd around the front entryway and made it difficult to get into the restaurant, but because there was nobody talking, we didn't have any direction on who to speak to or where to go. It was a really odd feeling. Someone eventually passed us dressed in the staff attire, and when we said that we had a reservation, we were sat down right away. For a Friday night, it was surprising how many empty tables there were. It was also shocking how cold it was in the building. We Peru's the menu and ordered two ice teas and a water. We did ask if there was a kids menu available and were told no which is fine so we thought that perhaps we could order a side of rice for our daughter, but they do not offer any side orders either. The only option available is to order a full adult size meal at $20 a piece on average and then have reheated leftovers the next day. To feel so cold and uncomfortable, to have the awkward greeting, and then to see that they do not accommodate family dynamics (children specifically) we decided to go somewhere else. We asked for the check and paid for our two ice teas and it was nine dollars. I'm assuming it's some imported elite brand of tea for that price but regardless we will never go back.
google avatar

Sheena M.

Yelp
Great service. Staff were friendly, attentive, and quick! Food was delicious. Ordered pepper beef, fried pork dish, and so much more! Would love to come back and bring family when around the area!

Louis B.

Yelp
You can't go wrong with any item here. We ordered a range of items from Mopu Tofu, Trio Kung Pao, Eggplant, to the garlic green beans with shrimp. Everything was so good! The lady we picked up the takeout from was so sweet and accommodating. I cannot wait to return!!!

John S.

Yelp
My favorite sit down Chinese food spot in Carlsbad(and all around the whole county). Such a nice environment and great service. Very clean establishment and the food is awesome every time. You can tell the ownership is very hands on and cares about all their locations. Ps the photos of the food are after I already started eating but the presentation when delivered to the table is wonderful and just more proof they care about the small details.
google avatar

Cristina V.

Yelp
Cute restaurant to enjoy a nice romantic dinner. I really enjoyed the tofu in brown sauce. My husband got the Szechwan garlic tofu and that was amazing. The flavor was so delicious I wish I could've kept stealing his food. The fried rice was on point too. A bit pricey but worth it.
google avatar

Carla T.

Yelp
The food was amazing! The place was clean and beautiful, the service was outstanding! I highly recommend this place! I will definitely come back when I'm in the area!

Cindy K.

Yelp
Always good and consistent. Food comes to the table hot! Service always great! I have no complaints

Yelp
First time here and was not disappointed. They seated us very quickly and the food and service was also quick. We had a noodle dish and chicken and shrimp dish and both were excellent. Will return for sure.

Cyn P.

Yelp
If I could give this place 10 stars I would! Hands down the best Chinese food I've had. The ambiance is perfect for a date night. I wanted to say thank you to Peggy. She was our waitress and from beginning to end she was so friendly and helpful with the menu. The food was amazing. The sesame chicken and the beef and broccoli were delicious. Definitely enough for sharing. I highly recommend this restaurant!!
google avatar

Carla L.

Yelp
First time here and had a wonderful experience with the best service and delicious foods! Hua, thank you for the first class service! You added a great experience to our date night out. Wonton soup was the best my husband and I've ever had. We had to stop ourselves from eating it all before our main course arrived. ;) The egg rolls are one of a kind! Everything was delicious and tasted fresh! Compliments to the chef(s) and the owner for bringing wonderful Chinese Food to Carlsbad.

Claudia S.

Yelp
Chin's is one of our favorite spots to get Chinese food and has been a Christmas staple for us, 6 hears in a row, but tonight was really rough. I can understand having too many orders to go through, it's will a holiday and you are the only open restaurant in the area, but stop orders at some point. People ordered a DAY in advance and were still waiting at 6pm. Please consider adding more staff or updating your system instead of the manual ticket system. I will add we still enjoy their food but take out orders are very unorganized.
