The Best Dishes Eater Editors Ate This Week, September 2022 - Eater NY

"Its birria quesataco is packed into a crispy homemade tortilla with stewed birria de res, gooey cheese, onions, and cilantro ($5 each) with a consomé so good I caught my dining partner slurping it right out of the bowl between taco dunks." - Eater Staff

Where to Find Birria Tacos in NYC | Eater NY

"Chofi Tacos has an unusual trajectory. Founded by Kim-Martin Flammia and Patrick Flammia, it started out as a Smorgasburg stall in Williamsburg. Then it hopped across two rivers to Union City, New Jersey. Located midblock in a residential neighborhood with outdoor seating and two tables inside, the place specializes in birria tacos, though several other fillings — including an intriguing “nortena” of cubed skirt steak — are also available. But the birria tacos themselves are fantastic, lushly stuffed and deeply dipped in juices, with the currently faddish quesabirria taco (or “quesataco”) the best." - Robert Sietsema

9/10 Quesa Birria Tacos I got the Quesa Birria Tacos. They were so tasty, Best I've ever had in my life, NO EXAGGERATION!!!. I think they also improved the recipe cause last time I tried it it was however a little salty, but this time it was perfect!!! You guys got yourselves a frequent customer!!💖💖💖

Google
We loved the Birria tacos with consumé and the chipotle chicken loaded nachos. Both were delicious and the portions were very generous. Grace was our server and she was friendly, kind and lovely. I hope the owners of this establishment appreciate what a great employee they have in Grace.

Google
$21 for 3 tacos and consommé.. it’s really good tacos in NJ so far.. best I had but I never had them in Mexico.. it’s just expensive I think.. you can get them for $15 on door dash/pick up.. $6 more just to eat in? Water is self serve. So what am I paying the extra $6 for???

Google
I was on the hunt for Birria tacos in NJ, and I found this paradise. The tacos and quesadillas completely stole my heart 💖. The only thing I’d suggest is adding a delivery or pick-up option because the line can be pretty long, but once you get the food, it’s totally worth the wait. Everything else is excellent! Update 2025: Chofi has expanded—or I think they moved to a new location! Now, you can go, sit, order, and eat there. It’s so much more comfortable and pleasant to visit. They’ve added delivery, and the quality of the food is still on point. I’ve developed a new obsession: Torta Birria (you have to try it, you’ll thank me later).

Google
We tried all varieties of tacos and they were all delicious! Everyone was raving about how good they were!! The taste, presentation, and freshness were superb! The owner and Yamilet, the manager were so accommodating and wonderful to work with during our teacher appreciation week. Their kindness and generosity is appreciated. The restaurant is clean and modern looking. What a great local spot for some delicious food!

Google

Google
My friends and I visited yesterday after our trip to American dream and getting to this palace it was pretty lowkey but the atmosphere and ambiance was so cute, my type of place for sure. Most of us order birria tacos and one of us had the chicken tacos. The tacos were super fresh and csn see them making everything for you ugh they were amazing tacos. The only thing that we didn’t like as much were the horchatas but aside from that 10/10 tacos 😩

Yelp
We heard good things about Chofi Birria and decided to make a trip on a Friday. We got there around 8:45 (they close at 9) but they let us eat at the restaurant anyway which was really nice. We over ordered - we got 3 tacos, nachos, corn, and consume. The corn came out first and it was delicious. Some of the best Mexican street corn I've had. Really balanced flavor, fresh crunchy corn - would definitely order again. The tacos were really tasty, and they had a huge amount of protein in them. Personally, I prefer my tacos with about 1/3 as much meat but I know many people see this as a high value taco. The nachos were EXCELLENT. Fresh fried chips, cheese, pico de gallo, guacamole, and picked jalapeños. It was a massive serving for $10. My dream scenario is that Chofi offers chilaquiles on weekends (one of my favorite breakfast items ever). They would be so good here! All we need is some fried eggs...

Yelp
Ordered: Pambazo de Birria (~$15): fried torta with birria, sour cream, lettuce, onion, cilantro, radish, and avocado; served with lime, molcajete salsa, and green sauce Aya's take: Wow, Chofi might actually be my new favorite birria spot! The Pambazo de Birria was absolutely delicious - from the seasoned and tender birria to all the fresh toppings loaded inside to the soft yet crisp torta holding everything together. It hit the spot! I preferred the green sauce over the molcajete salsa but both have different flavor profiles. My only complaint is the torta is a bit small and could also use some cheese. I placed my order for pickup and it was ready even a few minutes before the promised time. There's a few tables inside if you choose to dine in. Highly recommend Chofi, you will leave satisfied!

Yelp
Bomb tacos. I'm a beef taco kind of gyal and these did not disappoint! I got 3 birria beef tacos with the consumé, 2 with cheese, 1 without. I actually preferred the one without because I don't care for cheese on my tacos but the woman at the register had recommend with cheese. No fret tho, my partner ate 1.5 of them so no waste here! The consumé was tasty, the beef was well-seasoned without being overly salty. Just a good, meaty flavor-- the kind you get only by simmering meat for a WHILE. The place is small but cute. Kitchen is bigger than the seating area and open. Ladies in the back making fresh tortillas. These tortillas are legit some of the best tortillas I've ever tasted... and I've been to Mexico City ya'll. This will be my new taco spot, for sure. Def recommend the Jamaican agua Fresca (hibiscus) too!

Yelp
Best tacos hands down. They are a bit pricey but so worth it. I also like the taco Tuesday deal!

Yelp
BEST BIRRIA TACOS IN HUDSON COUNTY! Its extra if you want cheese but its worth it. They are not cheap with the dipping sauce and the service is great!

Yelp
Little spot with excellent tacos!! Meats were so flavorful and loved the assortment of salsas.

Yelp
Chofi is my favorite taco spot in NJ! As a pescatarian, finding good tacos is a mission but Chofi definitely lives up to the hype! I ALWAYS start with the chips + 4 dips; Crema Verde, pico de gallo, molcajete salsa, chipotle mayo. My favorite. My bf always orders the steak tacos and I order the vegetarian tacos. For my friends that can't tolerate spice, make sure you ask for it mild or your mouth will be on fire! You can order online for pickup or sit inside. Just note, there are about 3 small tables plus seating at the window so it's snug but cozy. The service is always fantastic, the food is even better!
google avatar

Yelp
Some of the best tacos on the east coast! Only problem is they are on the expensive side since their discovery on social media. We tried an assortment of tacos and the quality is top notch. Everything is authentic from the small interior of the restaurant to all the offerings on the menu. It is a hidden spot in the residential area in town. Parking can be a challenge depending on the time you visit the location. Staff are very friendly and portion size is very good. Highly recommend the birria tacos and consume!
google avatar

Li W.

Yelp
Pretty good spot! We got three birria tacos so we could get the complimentary consome, we also got two pork tacos, two chicken mole tacos and two steak tacos. The chicken mole was my favorite. The others I could pass on, even the birria tacos... probably because I've had tacos from Mexico We also got the chips with four dips, the dips were alright. Chips were good of course. We also got a Jamaica fresca, which was sour but also had so much sugar the fresca was sticky. Really good spot to satisfy your taco craving, but not my absolute favorite (again, probably because I've been spoiled with tacos from Mexico). Service is quite quick, food came out within 15mins. Ambiance is nice, few tables inside if you'd like to sit inside. Love that you can see into the kitchen.

Yelp
Fast service GREAT FOOD suitable ambiance. I call them the New Jersey birria originators. When it doubt go here to have your tastebuds fulfilled Everytime. The quality never disappoints
google avatar

Neha M.

Yelp
Customer service was great, such a friendly staff. Food was quality... flavor was not all there but I added the hot sauces and that definitely helped. The ambiance is adorable! Small spot and would be tough during dinner rush to find a table. We came around 5, easy to find parking and were able to get a table too. Great spot to try out if you're in the area.
google avatar

Mike W.

Yelp
Super solid birria tacos! This place has a small menu and they specialize in birria. They definitely know what they're doing. Of you order three birria tacos they give you a free consume!
google avatar

Stanley K.

Yelp
Love the ambiance! There are only 3 tables (2 4-tops, 1 2-tops) and the bar facing outside that can sit 4 people. But they allow BYOB. You order at the counter and they'll bring the food out to you. Staff were super friendly and helpful. And the food was amazing! Loved the birria sauce and would definitely return to try other items on the menu!
google avatar

Nya G.

Yelp
I promise you, if you ever had Birria and thought it was good! YOU WERE WRONG! This was the first birria place I tried after years of hearing about it and I am so glad this was the place that I had my first experience at. The tacos are absolutely amazing. Since trying it from here, I have ordered birria at two restaurants as well as what New Yorkers deem the best, Birria-Landia and this by far beats any place I have ever tried. They did just raise their prices recently but as they should. My only downfall is I went to this place a lot last year as well as the beginning of the year and there is no welcoming customer service, like how you would normally get by eating at a specific place all the time.
google avatar

David K.

Yelp
I can't say enough great things about this place, it's truly a gem. Chofi's tacos are spectacular. Their tortillas are far from an afterthought and are the perfect consistency. I highly recommend the birria tacos, which are very tasty with the consomé. The interior is nothing special, but is clean and comfortable and decorated with Día de los Muertos prints. If you're in the area it's worth going a few blocks out of your way for this place - you won't regret it.
google avatar

JJ L.

Yelp
Small shop serving (in my opinion) the best tacos in the New York Tri-state area. The taco shells are crispy on the outside but still soft and chewy and thick. It doesn't fall apart even when soggy (impressive). Small seating area, staff were nice. Each taco is ~$5 each, so not exactly the cheapest but hey, nothing surprising for an East Coast taco.
google avatar

Sherry V.

Yelp
Very cute little place. Feels like your at your family's house. Staff was friendly and did not wait long for food. Birria tacos were good. Three was too much in my opinion they are very filling. The flautas were so good. One order is good for one or to share. The only downside is parking! Not the establishments fault. If your not from the area parking is very difficult! You can't even double park. Overall I highly recommend.

Yolanda B.

Yelp
Food is good, cute lil restaurant within walking distance from our AirBnb. Prices are reasonable
google avatar

Lauren F.

Yelp
The best birria I've ever had, second only to my sister in law. Also, the tortillas are thicker, so they deliver perfectly.
google avatar

Ebony C.

Yelp
I have a love/hate relationship with this place. I don't understand why they take so long to make tacos. Like why? Are they cooking the flour on the comal order by order and then making the meat each time an order is placed? I hope so for the wait. I don't like the birria, I think the consome is way too salty and I don't like the taste of the birria here. I do however, love the steak (carne) and the chicken. those are seasoned well and tasty. I like whatever they do to the tortilla. These are the best tortillas I've ever had. I really like the esquite and the quesadilla's touch with the blue corn and the rajas/champinones. Such a great touch and delicious. The flan used to be good but clearly the recipe/cook must have changed and now it is really bleh. When I realized the owner was not of the community/culture I was not only mortified, I was sad. I so wanted to support the community and a local Latinx owned place doing this well in Union City. Regardless to what, I like the chicken tacos. Most other places chicken is dry, flavorless and bland. The juices are hit or miss. They lack consistency. Some days they're well done, others the aguas taste terrible. The service is as inconsistent as the cooking/turnaround time, ridiculously long wait times, lack of parking situation (even for grab-and-go)... there is so many headaches and barriers to getting to the food which makes it stressful before you can even just EAT! So... yeah. I gotta be in the area for a game, or somewhere else where am WALKING here or it's a no for me. Otherwise some tasty steak and chicken tacos served on plastic plates.

Mark D.

Yelp
We wanted to try the birria and needed a new place for tacos as the old one has gone downhill. This place did not disappoint. Small storefront so it was going to be either really good or a nightmare. It was really good. Also ordered the chicken mole and chips and guacamole. All good
google avatar

Rohan H.

Yelp
How can such a perfect place exist? I had to get up outta my seat because it was that delicious. It's extremely crispy & you can tell they take their time with each individual taco making sure it will be the best taco they have ever made. I have had birria a million times at other places but this one BLEW ME AWAY! DESERVES A MICHELIN STAR!!!!!! Coming back here again and again and again
google avatar

Disha S.

Yelp
Limited vegetarian options. Their corn was a little too creamy for my liking. Salsas were both delicious, Fortas was very good and would recommend. They don't serve rice and beans with any of their items, however their vegetable taco with or without cheese was fresh and filled with flavor.
google avatar

David John A.

Yelp
Ordered takeout from here, and have to say the restaurant itself is adorable; they have about five tables from what I saw and some counter seating. The servers were friendly, when I came by to pick-up and were honest with how long it should take to be ready. Food was excellent, was really hard to pick a favorite but if you're debating wether or not to have the consome, just do it!!! The loot: Birria with Consome Taco 5/5 Mole Poblano Taco 4/5 Pollo Asada Taco 5/5 Carne Nortena Taco 5/5 Esquites 4/5
google avatar

Tyler G.

Yelp
Simply Amazing. And that is not an understatement. The food here is simple... but the flavor is extraordinary. The Birria... The Floutas... The Frescas... true to what they should be. Being close enough to see your tortillas being made adds to experience, the people at the register are always friendly and informative. All in all it's a dope lil taqueria, a gem.

Yelp
Tacos are my absolute favorite food in the world. I would eat them everyday if could. I decided to come check out Chofi because they were on a list for best birria tacos in NJ. If you know this area, you know parking is a hit or miss thing, but there's public transport available as well. The staff was super nice and friendly. I was greeted immediately. The establishment is small so I wouldn't recommend for large groups to stay, but they offer takeout as well. The food came out super quick and was really fresh. The price was acceptable for the tacos and if you order 3 you get the consome (which is the most important part!) the fact that I had to buy a certain amount to get the main part of the birria taco was a downer, but I survived. The meat was tender and the ingredients were fresh! My only gripe was that the consome was a bit saltier than my liking. This may not matter to some, but I don't really cook with salt so I believe I am sensitive to the taste of it. I ordered an agua Fresca that was really good as well! Overall, I had a good experience with good food, and I will be back!

Yelp
Update review, but this really is a must stop, possibly a must travel to. I've eaten here several times now and they are consistently fantastic tacos. When you eat here, start with the Birria taco with cheese. It's out of this world, the best birria taco I've had. The tortillas are delicious, they stood out to me as I was eating how good the tortilla was, which doesn't happen very often. If you order three Birria tacos, you get a free side of the beef consomme. Dip your tacos in it, drink it straight, either or, it's delicious. I may try to order extra for the winter months to alleviate any ailment. Make sure to get an agua fresca to wash the taco down, my personal favorite is Pina, but the horchata is also very very good. The chips with guacamole were a great starter, the chips are extra crispy and the guac was flavorful. We also ordered the flautas de papas y queso, which were hot, crispy, and flavorful. I really like the pickled onions, which gave a perfect amount of acid to cut through a rich dish. My second favorite taco was the carne nortena, which was also out of this world. The meat was cooked perfectly, well seasoned, and juicy. My partner loved the mole poblano taco. Honestly, I don't think you can go wrong with any of the tacos. I haven't found a delicious one yet. The portion size was good, especially compared to other taco spots. Non-Food Stuff: The staff was fantastic, kind, helpful, and professional. The place itself is on the smaller side, there are maybe 4 tables and seats along the counter, but it's bright, colorful, and byob. Parking is street parking which can be a little tough in the area, but I've usually found somewhere reasonably nearby to park.
google avatar

Ina F.

Yelp
Third time here and honestly, what really impresses me is the consistency. It's a great meal each time. Whether dine in or take out. The tacos are absolutely bursting with tender meat, and you can really tell the tortillas are hand made. I love that it's slightly thicker so it can really absorb that delicious consommé. The corn is never over cooked, it just always perfect. And a wide variety of Jarritos to wash it all down with!
google avatar

Mel T.

Yelp
There aren't a lot of birria places in the area so when I found out about Chofi Birria, it immediately went on my bookmarks list. But it wasn't until a while later did we finally get to try it but I'm happy we did. We ordered for pick-up one Saturday afternoon. We had the birria tacos and the birria torta. It was a bit too much braised beef for me (for background, I don't love braised beef because it has that dry, chewy taste), but the consomme was amazing. Next time, I'll try the chicken instead and order some extra consomme. Either way, it's a pretty solid option and prices are super reasonable, especially for birria.
google avatar

Bloss C.

Yelp
I am feeling this place. Feeling it a lot. As a pescatarian, I can only try about a quarter of the menu and I am still feeling it. I've had the chips with four dips, agua fresca (BYOB), the blue corn mushroom quesadilla, and the vegetarian tacos. My favorite dish here are the tacos because the flavors in the tacos are outstanding. The corn shell is handmade, fresh, and delicious; I don't want a taco without a shell like this. The vegetarian taco has mushrooms, grilled poblano peppers, cheese, and molcajeteada salsa. The smokiness of the salsa and peppers paired with he mildness of the mushrooms, cheese, and corn shell make a very satisfying taco. Probably the best vegetarian taco I have had. You can order the tacos without cheese to make it vegan. The quesadilla is a must if you are a fan of blue corn tortillas, which I am, but the shell was a little thick for me and I would choose the tacos over the quesadilla any day. The chips and four dips was also okay, I would just as well have the chips with guac and the molcajeteads salsa. I've done take away and eat-in and prefer eat-in at one of the outside tables. In terms of lines, there always is one but its not too bad, not nearly as bad as finding parking. Good Luck with that.
google avatar

Nicholas M.

Yelp
4.5 stars Street parking 3 tables for seating (small seating area) Had the Birria + Consome: separate, 3.5 but together it's 4.5. The Consome is the soupy dip that compliments the Birria. The meat was deliciously tender and the shell was slightly crunchy. Would come here again!
google avatar

Laura C.

Yelp
Husband picked up this to go one night. I was craving some birria tacos and consome. I had my birria tacos with cheese because that just makes them so much more delicious. The tacos and consome combined were full of flavor. Salsa was a good little kick to the whole meal. I love spicy and they definitely had a punch. Not overly spicy but perfectly spiced. The consome on its own however was a bit salty and I usually don't mind salt. It was just a bit over salted. I have to mention their fresh tortillas were on point. Loved! The bubbly sweet Jarritos of course were the perfect drink for a abundant meal. Overall I definitely would try their food again and recommend to others to try their food.
google avatar

Irene H.

Yelp
Service (even for takeout) was lacking. We ordered online and then had to wait ~30 minutes after the quoted time for our order (for two). Despite the long waiting time, they neglected to tell us that the vegetarian taco was sold out. Luckily it was only one taco, but they should've let us know at pickup and it would've been nice if they asked if we wanted a substitute. We found out at home when we were unpacking the order. Also, we shouldn't have had to call afterwards to ask for a refund for the missing taco. On to the food - this was the first time I tried birria tacos and it was too salty for me. Also got the esquites corn and the portion size was very small.
google avatar

Fatima C.

Yelp
The food here is decent. The chicken taco is the only item I would come back for. The chips were not salted at all, the consume did not have much depth and flavor, and the birria tacos were decent. I've had better birria tacos elsewhere. Parking in the area is very tricky so come prepared. The food is a bit pricey compared to other restaurants with similar items. However, the food is still good. I came with a lot of expectations but it was nothing to scream about. The restaurant is taking COVID precautions and has some outdoor seating. The staff wipes down the tables after folks leave which is great.
google avatar

Chengru L.

Yelp
We got the birria tacos with consume and the corn on the side. The tacos and consume were really flavorful and full of meat so they were really filling. The corn was also really tasty, good flavorful and a tad spicy. I'd definitely come back here when I'm in the mood for birria.

Denise C.

Yelp
The prices are outrageous. I spent $50 on one torta and 3 tacos. Ridiculous. The menu on Yelp and other areas of the internet is not updated. Their prices have quadrupled in a matter of a year! Why? Because a few people posted them on social media, calling the spot a "hidden gem". The food was salty and soggy. Don't let temporary social media hype get to your head or unfortunately you'll be out of business very soon!

Amy C.

Yelp
Ordered a NYE platter which was $45/10 tacos of birria, chicken, pork, carnitas, and mushroom. Food was delicious! Good size tacos with good portion of meats. Food was packaged nicely and on time for pick up.
google avatar

Au'Jah W.

Yelp
Food was great! We sat outside, which was okay considering the times. However, this was literally my first time trying barria tacos and I was blown away. How can I ever eat a regular taco again? *drools* I will definitely be going back during a less busy time to avoid the crowd (super hard to find parking in the area).

Elaine C.

Yelp
Birria done right! Flavors are addictive. Highly recommend. I could eat here everyday

Juan G.

Yelp
Nice little spot, small but to the point menu Friendly staff. Hand made tortillas are outstanding.
google avatar

Sanghoon H.

Yelp
Best taco spot in America so far. Super friendly staff and food is excellent. Taco shell is corn flour fyi. Birria has perfect flavor. It's not as thick as I imagined but it was still great. There's a lot of people so expect a wait and there's limited seating.
google avatar

Vince G.

Yelp
Hands down the absolute best tacos in Union City and likely all of NJ! Homemade tortillas and flavorful birria! Yum!
google avatar

Andrea A.

Yelp
Definitely of the most authentic Mexican spots in the area. There's an option for chips and 4 dips. Honestly the salsa and the pico were okay but the stars were the guac (nice and lime-y) and whatever that smokey/creamy dip was. Love me some elote do their version in the cup was great. They have all the Mexican sodas but no horchata :/ The birrira is really good. The dip is really tasty but the tortilla is a little chewy instead of crunchy. The quesadilla is a little odd but tastes good. Just feels like a big taco really. For the price tho it's hard to go wrong. You can eat inside now which is nice but they do pick up.
google avatar

Imtiaz S.

Yelp
I will keep it simple. Just like we are experiencing the fourth wave in coffee, the Birria with Consome Taco at this amazing place is the next wave in tacos. Good food, great service, what more can one ask for.
google avatar

German B.

Yelp
This is an absolute gem and Union City is fortunate to have a restaurant like this. My brother-in-law put me on to this place. The food is absolutely amazing. Their tortillas are a little on the thick side but they are delicious. I've had their chicken platter and carne platter. It comes with various sauces, cilantro and onions. Their guac and chips are crazy good too. This is the only taco place that makes my family happy...kids and adults. The place itself is tiny. But they make the best of it. They have 3 or 4 tables I think. So it's more of a take out place. Just try it out. Restaurants is a tough business. I hope they get plenty of business so they can stick around for a long time. I love Chofi!
google avatar

Garrett L.

Yelp
Unbelievable best birria tacos with consume I ever had! Life changing. New favorite Mexican spot. % worth the drive, 30min whatever. Authentic as it gets with a cool small cozy family vibe inside
google avatar

Ronald H.

Yelp
Saw this place as a top taco spot in New Jersey. Exceeded the hype. It is a small place and we went during non peak hours. I saw a an older women in the back working on the food and I knew then it was going to be good. The tortillas were crispy and and perfectly done. The meat was tender an so so flavorful. This is up there as my new fav taco. I prefer it without cheese but the cheese is also great. Will be a customer again.
google avatar

R Scott L.

Yelp
(January 2021 visit.) Wow, flavor bomb. My 1st birria taco order and this location didn't disappoint. Yes, street parking a block away if lucky. Yes, a little wait during high demand times. Yes, limited dine in seating but efficient staff taking orders and fulfilling. Good portion and great flavor profile. Will endure all again for another visit.

Yelp
Okay, worth the hype. We recently watched a Latin cuisine show that highlighted the history and technique to Birria tacos and I hadn't been able to stop thinking about trying it. Finally got a chance to come here on a cold, rainy COVID winter day and they were sooo delicious! I love the thick homemade corn tortillas. They are so hot and fresh - we saw one of the cooks hand rolling the dough and I burned my tongue during my first bite. The beef is so soft and full of flavor. The consommé is complements each bite so nicely. I love the savory flavor and the richness of the soup. We also tried the mushroom quesadilla and loved it. Had some consommé left over for that, too! I really like the creative, yet simple aesthetics of this small shop that's quite busy. We had to wait a little while, but it was definitely worth it. I imagine on warm sunny days the line is LOOONG. We are coming here again for sure!
