"We once rolled up to Cho Sun OK on a Sunday night around 8pm and there was a line out the damn door. You know why? Because this classic Korean BBQ spot is great, everyone knows it, and it's BYOB. You’ll be hit with wonderful smells of sizzling meat before you make it in the door. Once inside, you'll notice that it’s small, and seems to be filled with a lot of regulars which adds to this place's charm. Bring a lot of friends, and order the bulgogi, galbi, seafood pancake, and some dumplings. Oh, and of course plenty of booze. photo credit: Kim Kovacik Food Rundown Gun Mandu Dumplings can’t be bad. It’s science. They are usually best when given a little pan fry. Mul Mandu If you're more of a steamed dumpling person, get these. They're just like the ones above, but instead have a soft, light wrapper with a pleasant chew. HaeMul PaJeon A Korean staple, this pancake is made with eggs, wheat flour, rice flour, green onions, and seafood. We're big fans, especially when it's dipped in the tangy, soy dipping sauce that comes on the side. photo credit: Kim Kovacik Bulgogi Thin slices of beef marinated in a house specialty sweet and savory sauce. This is the way to go if you're looking to keep things simple. photo credit: Kim Kovacik Galbi-Gui Sweet, salty, fatty—these short ribs are a must-order. Nakji-Gui Our favorite seafood entrée. Thinly sliced octopus that’s cooked in a stone pan at your table. Try not to overcook the octopus—it’s really easy to do. There are also some noodles to mix it with. Japchae Sweet potato noodles that come with bits of beef and vegetables. A good non-meat dish to try, even though there’s technically meat involved." - Sam Faye

The food was great! We had between 3 people: 1) grilled mackerel and soybean stew combo 2) spicy beef soup (note this is spicy) 3) seafood scallion pancake (took this to-go bc we were full) So it is pretty generous serving sizes. The spicy beef soup was packed alll the way through with beef, egg, soybean sprouts, and other veggies, so this felt like a great deal.

Google
We were craving Korean BBQ so found this spot to stop in. They have a few combo selections for BBQ that comes with a variety of meat. The rice comes with the combo and is not an added charge like other places. They will bring out lettuce wraps upon request. Our waitress was very attentive and if asked for something, she brought it out quickly. Would recommend and would go back.

Google
Visited for brunch with my mom who is a lover of Korean BBQ and Korean culture. Food was amazing. The host was helpful. We had more than enough food, we cooked two meats. I tried lots of new things and enjoyed the lettuce wraps. I would come here again, the earlier the better. Not hard to find. No frills but super delicious and authentic. Give them a try!

Google
Best Korean in the triangle! Get the combo A with pork, beef, and chicken and all the wonderful little dishes. It's perfect for two people.

Ally Diaz

Google
First time trying this place and we love it. I would say, we barely knew much how to do it, but the lady there helped us and gave us advices and stuff she was very helpful. I love the experience I would said that everything was great, but if you are not a fan of the Korean food, I wouldn’t think it would be for you, but if you enjoy and eaten it I would definitely recommend it. I love it and enjoy it so much! Define toy will go back. We had combo C.

Google
Food was cheaper than what I found around. Good options to choose from. Friendly staff. Ordered hot stone bimbop, japchae, veg pancake and bulgulgi

Google
I had a fantastic experience at Chosun Ok BBQ! The restaurant's cleanliness was impressive, creating a comfortable dining atmosphere. The variety of small dishes offered were delightful and flavorful, adding a delightful touch to the meal. The highlight, undoubtedly, was the mouthwatering pork belly – it left me craving for more. A must-visit spot for anyone looking to enjoy delicious Korean BBQ in a clean and inviting environment!

Google
Usually I get this on grubhub and I think I will stick to that. I drove almost 20 min, ordered, paid, waited, got the food, thought I felt the right number of things in the super tied up bag so I drove home. When I opened the bag one entree (mine of course) was missing. If it happened on grubhub it is an easy fix but because I went (and didn't want to drive there and back again) I lost out on that food and money. I ate more of my share of the appetizer and my partner shared his entree with me. It was very tasty. I'll check the bag better next time.

Yelp
I had heard from a friend that Chosun Ok was a chain that was pretty common on the West Coast, but upon walking in, I was pleasantly surprised that this location certainly did not feel that way. Chosun Ok is probably as authentic as Korean food can get in the area, and I'm very happy to say that it certainly scratches the itch. Service is kind and timely, and the food tastes great - I knew from the moment that the diverse set of banchan came out that I was in the right place. The seafood pancake was robust, the stone-pot bibimbap fulfilling, and the jjamppong surpassing my expectations. Chosun Ok is definitely a place I'll be returning to!

Andrea A.

Yelp
A pretty good spot for classic Korean comfort food! I've been here a couple of times now, and have always enjoyed my visits. The banchan (side dishes) are numerous & tasty. Some of my favorites here are the seafood & onion pajeon (pancake) and spicy stir-fried squid. They also have fixed KBBQ sets, which are nice if you're not feeling AYCE. Ambiance & service are fine. 7/10 would recommend!

Neal W.

Yelp
This place is the real deal - extensive menu and table grills. The ban chan was plentiful and all good choices. We had the seafood hotpot, squid bokum, and beef bibimbap, which was much more than 3 people needed - plenty of leftovers. The squid bokum in particular was fantastic.

Jessica G.

Yelp
I like the bibimbap here. It's a good amount for the price, nicely assembled, and comes out fast. The toppings themselves are seasoned really lightly, but they're not entirely bland and they do give you a gochujang sauce. It's comfortable and cozy inside, and there's a good amount of space between tables and dividers so you're not eavesdropping on everyone sitting next to you. Service was amazing, the staff are really sweet and they check in on you an appropriate amount.

Amy W.

Yelp
If you're looking for a place that hits the spot, this is NOT it. This is a terrible excuse for bulgogi. It's not marinated. Absolutely bland, tons of cabbage and onion, and soooo watery. Server didn't come by to ask if the food was ok either, maybe they already know.

Kim T.

Yelp
Fast service and loved the banchan. I wish all of the meat was marinated but I guess that's how it's served. Loved the soup we got - had dumplings, egg drop, and clear noodles. Would definitely come back.

Jenny T.

Yelp
This is a cozy Korean restaurant! I got the beef bibimbap lunch special. I really liked all the toppings, everything went really well with the gochujang sauce. It was really filling, but I wish there was more beef in it.

Thuy Tran

Yelp
This place is and will always be a HIT! Never have I ever been so poor in my life until I stumble upon this heaven on earth. The owners are out of this world and are sooo kind! We are always treated well. This is a family business so please be kind when you come. The owners are very sweet and the food is bussin

Tom H.

Yelp
Nice little Korean/Chinese restaurant with a friendly staff. Inside it is not the trendy gentrified feel you get with newer places such as boxyard down the road and that's a good thing. Casual atmosphere that is perfect for a weekday meal or lunch. Korean food has a lot of fermented veggies and this is true to authenticity with a variety of them in most dishes. Good portion sizes and quiet dining area. Bibimbap is of course a staple and it doesn't disappoint here with a hot plate to keep it warm during your entire meal. Parking is usually ok but the vehicle garages in the same strip mall can sometimes take up a lot of the spaces with customers vehicles. Overall recommend for an authentic Korean casual meal.

Meg L.

Yelp
Our go to Korean place when we are looking for tofu soup on a cold day! We also always get the seafood pancake as it is so delicious and crispy. The tofu has pieces of zucchini and onions, so not too bland. I love the pickled cucumber banchan. If you're feeling up for a meal, they have great options to combine your tofu soup to make into a meal. You can get the bulgogi, kalbi beef, or grilled mackerel and it's the perfect combo.

Miriam L.

Yelp
Stopped in here to grab lunch the people were so friendly here. We got the Korean sausage soup (순대국밥) and the Sweet and Sour Pork (탕수육). Both were very very good the pork was a large portion so great for sharing. Will definitely stop by again.

JJ D.

Yelp
We've ordered delivery from Chosun Ok several times without any issues. We usually get the Korean Style Grilled Beef Ribs and Soft Tofu Stew Combo, but we've also tried the Rice Cake Soup with Dumplings, all of which were great! The beef ribs that are part of the combo are a bit small, but we would order it again nonetheless.  However, on another occasion, we dined in and ordered the Seafood and Green Onion Pancake, Short Rib Soup, and the Pork Back-Bone Stew. Although the pancake and pork back-bone stew were good and flavorful, we were disappointed by the short rib soup. There were only 3 tiny pieces of beef in the soup, and the radish flavor in the broth was extremely overpowering while lacking beef flavor. We would return to Chosun Ok whenever we crave Korean food, but we would probably look to try other menu items.

Daniel S.

Yelp
Pork Bulgogi Bibimbap was fantastic. Perfect balance of crunch spicy and savory. Very fresh and flavorful.

Surelyne L.

Yelp
This little nondescript Korean restaurant has been in the same spot in this strip mall for many years. Glad that they're still going strong despite the challenges over the least few years. They were clearly short staffed but we were taken care of quickly. It's not a fancy place but rather a homey cozy type of family run restaurant. Food is Korean comfort food since it feels like ajuma is back in the kitchen cooking her homemade specialties for the family. Galbi tang, jajangmyum & haemul pajun we're all very good. If you want Korean comfort food in a quiet atmosphere, this is it!

Amanda H.

Yelp
Pretty good stone pot bibimbap. Fair prices and quick service. Parking lot is pretty crowded and not many tables available

Uyen N.

Yelp
We were craving for grilled intestine and there isn't a lot of options in Durham. It was frozen intestines but I would thia is still good quality. You grill until it's crispy the outside. Omg! It was so good! The service was quick. It's getting busy quickly between 6pm-7pm on Saturday, so I think coming slightly before 6pm is better. And also, the dumpling soup was tasty too.

Adam M.

Yelp
Great late evening Korean BBQ. "This is the way!" - Mandalorian said, and would have kept repeating himself while stuffing his face with sweet Korean marinated beef on the bone. Delicious and you'll love it too!

梅生

Yelp
Best Korean bbq around triangle. Fried dumplings is the my favorite fried dumplings of all time.

Cameron L.

Yelp
Lived in Korea for several years and married to a Korean man so I feel like I might know what's authentic Korean food and this is pretty darn close. The owner is so sweet and is very attentive when I ask for more side dishes or food. I eat here almost every day when I travel for work and even like bringing my coworkers here!

Maria W.

Yelp
I can't find the right words to say how delicious the food was. It was hot. It was fresh. It was on time. I'm stuck and hung up on this restaurant. You're gonna love it.

Matt D.

Yelp
I was really looking forward to this, but the bulgogi was meh and severely overpriced for what you get ($25 for about 1/2 cup of beef strips), the kimchi stew was watery and needed heat, the kimchi itself was limp and lifeless, not snappy like it should be. The kimchi pancake was decent, unfortunately a bit soggy from the delivery. Though it was our saving grace for an otherwise disappointing dinner. I will be eating in the H Mart food court the next time I get a craving for Korean food.

Jolina C.

Yelp
Reliably good Korean food in Durham! We ordered three dishes but when all the side dishes were served it felt like a whole feast on the table! They're definitely not stingy on the extras. Bulgogi was very flavorful and the seafood pancake was just the right thickness and was crispy on the sides. We didn't do Korean BBQ but Chosun Ok has table grills for their BBQ menu. The lady who served our table was nice and attentive. Check out their lunch menu--their prices and quality make a good deal!

Vail J.

Yelp
Best Soft Tofu Stew. We come here at least once a month. Their service is fast without sacrificing the food quality. It's a family owned business that's why it's like you're eating home cooked food.

Sanjay G.

Yelp
I went there with a group office colleagues, I was amazed they were very willing and open to modifying the menu for us. I enjoyed the rice and veggie pancakes (didn't know such a thing existed) and bulgogi can be made vegeterian with egg and veggies. I will visit again.

Lucy K.

Yelp
Food is great, and the owner couple are so sweet. I like the soy bean soup, stone pot rice bowl, the grilled fish too. Everything i've tried so far has been tasty!

Jackie O.

Yelp
My 1/2 Korean side is smiling proudly on the owners and ajummas of Chosun OK in Durham. A little bit pricey but worth it for the authentic Korean options and taste, as well as the proximity in Durham. The convenience of ordering delivery was so easy. And can we discuss how CUTE this packaging is??? So neat and saveable for later. The kalbi was cooked well and easy to eat in small pieces. Great variety of fresh bonchon. Seafood pancake had good flavor but was a bit soggy (I prefer crispier outside dough to balance the soft chewiness of the squid/octopus). Finally, the soybean paste soup hit the spot, but definitely tasted better in the stone pot during the last two times I came to the restaurant in person. Looking forward to many more trips and takeout sessions from Chosun OK...and getting all my friends to try Korean food for the first time here in the Triangle :)

Yelp
I happened upon Chosun Ok BBQ this weekend while visiting Durham. It is tucked off into a shopping center off of Hwy. 54 with a Pizza Hut in the parking lot. The restaurant storefront caught my eye because it basically says "Korean BBQ", and I love Korean food. I was greeted very warmly when I first opened the door. The inside of the restaurant is very clean and set up for dine-in, however I requested take out, and was immediately assisted with my takeout order. Korean food is meant to be enjoyed in groups, so the menu pricing is based on the servings being for more than one, etc. If you order a single combo, look to pay something like $15-20 for all the fixings. I ordered the Bulgogi Beef Combo and my food came in less than 10 minutes and then I was out the door. Y'all! First of all, I had enough food for me to eat three full servings. I filled my plate twice on the night I purchased the food, then had enough to eat again the following day for dinner! And yes, I was stuffed every time!!! This was a good portion of food. I'm glad I got the combo with soup, and not the Bulgogi Platter. I may have been eating Korean BBQ for a week! LOL But seriously, Chosun Ok BBQ also has some seriously delicious food, and it wasn't so spicy that I had to drink a gallon of water after each bite. I literally loved everything! I have favorited them in my list of "must return to" places whenever I am back in Durham. The meat, the kimchi, pickled veggies, the kimchi soup...everything was absolutely delicious! I posted a picture of everything that comes with the Bulgogi (Beef) Combo I purchased for $18. Whether you love Korean BBQ and food, or whether you have always been curious and just want to try something new, I highly recommend this cute little spot tucked off to the side at the corner of Hwy 54 and Hwy 55. Tell them Kindra Speech sent you.

Yelp
I thought when invited to a Passover Sader, it was so wonderful, I was ready to meet my Lord Jesus. Then I was invited to a Chinese Lunar New Year dinner and it was so wonderful, I was again ready to meet my Lord Jesus. Tonight I felt as though I was in Korea as my dream, when my boss and supervisor treated me because they know of my love for Korea. Again, I feel as though I am ready to meet my Lord Jesus. I have been perfectly blessed in every way. I ordered Udon/vegetable noodle soup, and seafood pancake. Others ordered varied bulgogi meat dishes. It was so wonderful and even though I'm quite the fat old white lady, the owners were kind to hear my poor Korean language I tried for the first time even though they were way too busy. Nothing is more precious than tolerance. I will pray for their fullest blessing from God and hope countless people will bless them. God bless them richly.

Zain K.

Yelp
Not only was I served 10 (ten!) panchan, but I actually enjoyed every one of them, which almost never happens (even with the standard six-ish that one typically gets). I was offered free refills, but when you're dining alone, 10 servings of panchan is quite sufficient... The above alone would have made for a five-star experience, but on top of it, the seafood soondubu did not diappoint. The soup itself was a little lighter in consistency than is typical, but it was plenty flavorful, and the quantity of tofu and seafood was generous. All-in-all, this was an exceptional dining experience on a cold, rainy night in the RDU area.

Leatrice M.

Yelp
I took the family there last night for dinner, and when we walked in, a lady greeted us with "how can I help you?". I told her seating for four, and she looked at the clock on the wall and paused. She then looked for a booth and sat with us but was not happy to seat us. We waited and waited, and no one greeted us. I noticed that she was having a not-so-pleasant conversation with what appeared to be the chef and waiter (all in one). Water was dripping from the ceiling tile over our booth. We also noticed a sanitation grade of 94 and checked the history on our phones, and they were graded previously with a B. We left!

Tiffany L.

Yelp
This was my first time trying Korean BBQ and I was not disappointed. The employees were very helpful and very inviting. Portion sizes were more than enough even for my 2 friends and I. The vibes were very nice.

Queena Z.

Yelp
I love their tofu stew here and their side dishes. The service takes a while but they're very friendly. Probably the best and most authentic Korean restaurant near Duke

Dimond P.

Yelp
I know you're not supposed to compare food to those close to you but my Korean grandmother would roll over in her grave if she knew what I ordered here. Seafood and tofu stew with one prawn and one mussel, very mute flavor and mostly tofu. A beef bibimbap...what a sad claim for beef bulgogi. Where was the soy, the garlic, the sliced onion? The banchan was weird tasting. Some kind of puple cabbage slaw? I dont know what type of korean inspired food this was but it wasn't for me. Also I got this $70 meal delivered so it might have been a better experience in the restaurant.

Qiongqiong M.

Yelp
It was good. Service was good. The lady also speak Chinese. My favorite was the soft toufu soup.

Esther H.

Yelp
Five for food; 4 for polite if slightly indifferent service. I haven't been here in several years but decided to give it a chance after seeing more positive reviews recently. The boiled mandu was excellent- juicy, porky and so flavorful it didn't need the ganjang. The yukgaejang was also excellent- deep broth, just the right amount of spice, perfect ratio of vegetables, noodles, and shredded beef with an egg cracked inside. I also liked they gave 8 different banchans- more than other local places offer. The rice was a little mushy but I'll let that pass because the entrees were so good.

Danny H.

Yelp
Firstly, I have to say that I'm astounded that there's actually a Korean business out here. My brother used to live near here, and I've spent a lot of time in my life in the RDU area, and if there's one thing that I've always observed about the area is the sheer lack of Korean businesses in the area. I was passing through with my mom, and she apparently had some old friends who had temporarily relocated to Durham, and asked us to stop by. They took us out to lunch, and cited a "nearby Korean restaurant" and I was kind of like lol no way, but from what they explained is that this place really catered to a lot of the Korean students who went to Duke, which there are a litany of jokes right there, but we'll leave that off of Yelp reviews. Anyway, they're pretty much right off of I-40 if you take exit 278, and they're in a shopping center that shares a parking lot with a Taco Bell and Pizza Hut. They're pretty small and nondescript and easy to miss, but they're towards one of the ends of the L shaped building. Entering the establishment, it's a fairly modern yet traditional decor, and very simplistic. The place can seat maybe 30-40 diners, and the tables have grills built into them for all the people who think Korean food is solely bbq. Naturally, the music playing was K-pop, who I have no idea, my wife is the expert on all that stuff, but at least it wasn't blasting, and my table could have comfortable conversations. Service is very prompt, diligent and typical of lots of Korean restaurants that serve non-Koreans (IYKYK). Everyone at my table ordered a stew of some sort, as their menu has all the typical Korean stews. Yuegaejjang for me, since I was told theirs was good, and my mouth is starting to water just thinking about it, but we also got a seafood pajun (appetizer pancake). The quality of all the food was outstanding, and for an area that's devoid of lots of Korean businesses, this Chosun OK's delivered well and satisfied my expectations. The price is a little bit on the high side, but I chalk that up to the people that running the place capitalizing on customers not knowing that their price is a little bit on the high side, so good on them for getting paid. Overall, I was very pleased with my meal there, and it definitely hit a spot that I don't get to hit as often as I like to these days, much to the dismay of my own heritage. Kudos to this business for helping spread the word that Korean food is more than just barbecue and exposing more people to just how awesome it is. Would go again, and recommend it to any of my old friends in the RDU area who don't have to visit me in Atlanta in order to get reliably decent Korean food anymore.

Kaitlyn M.

Yelp
The food here is the highlight, it's rich and perfectly cooked and presented, and delicious! We got the mandu gui to start, which came out after all the delicious pickled banchan. The banchan was all fresh and crisp with lots of flavor. The mandu gui (fried dumplings) was incredible, clearly homemade and bursting with meat and veggies, and perfectly crisped. I got the pork bulgogi and my husband got the galbi dolsot bibimbap. They both came out sizzling and smelling terrific, very quickly. My pork was rich, only a bit spicy with all the best bacon flavors. There was tons of it and it came with a small silver covered dish of rice to stay hot. The bibimbap in the hot stone bowl (dolsot) ahad all our favorite banchan and more, with amazing crispy rice, and stayed ultra hot through the whole meal. The owner also brought us the bottle of "sauce to go with it". There was also complimentary miso soup, and when I ordered green tea it was excellent loose tea with "corn tea" (the owner said) that tasted divine. So the atmosphere inside is slick and trendy with hardwoods and box lanterns a very clean, new, and fresh feeling. It's often empty feeling though, since it's rarely full, and feels an odd place to have any sort of private conversation. They've got a TV playing Korean shows which helps with the quiet atmosphere. The owner is attentive, but a tad brusque -- not in a bad way, just different from typical Western customer service style. Once we got used to her talking and listening while walking away from our table, we realized that's just her style. She was very sweet otherwise offering suggestions and recommendations with what we'd like and telling us about the meats used and what's good. Just know it can be a bit off-putting if you're used to fawning Applebee's waiters. In short, this place is great, with amazing Korean food. $46 gets you a giant beef bowl, tons of pork bulgogi, plenty of dumplings, and banchan and soup. Not bad at all.

Yen F.

Yelp
Love this place! Excellent food and the waitstaff is amazing! Highly recommend this place as everything we have tried is amazing!

Jel M.

Yelp
Very authentic Korean Food near the Durham Area. There is a sweet korean lady that will help you and the Food there is very delicious.

Malou D.

Yelp
The service is ok but not great , they didn't come back and ask if we want more side dishes. The bulgogi is too watery. Overall it's a place where you want to try there food but will not come back.

Ariel B.

Yelp
Definitely the best Korean food in the Durham area! I've been in multiple times and have enjoyed each of my meals here. I will admit that it's not the best Korean food I've ever had, but for the area, it blows other restaurants out of the water in terms of quality, price, and quantity. The service is great, the prices are good, and the overall atmosphere is perfect. I've tried their Kimchi Jeon, Dduk Guk, Dduk Mandu Guk, and loved all of them. I will say that the kimchi is on the milder side, but still delicious. I found the broth of the soups to be a bit thin, but the flavors are still delicious. I love the variety of the menu as well, as there are so many great options to choose from. Also ugh the BANCHAN! They give you so so much, and each is absolutely delicious. My friend who have also eaten here have also enjoyed their food immensely! I love that they also give you bori-cha ! TLDR: great Korean food! I definitely will be back!

Youngho H.

Yelp
It is not even worthy to give 1 star. Using low quality material and poor taste main dish which is very small portion. Service was poor. Side dish seemed made over couple days. It was dry and made me worry about food poisoning. NEVER recommend to visit this restaurant to enjoy Korean food.

Liz Z.

Yelp
Food is delicious, most of it looks handmade from scratch. The place is a little small but cozy, in weekdays a Grandma and Grandpa would be the serves( grandpa being the cooker) they're the sweetest, weekends looks like their family are the ones serving, is always very busy, be patient.

Peter L.

Yelp
This place is worth 3.5 stars as is suggested by other users, but since we don't have a .5 star option, I am going with 4, giving them the benefit of the doubt until my next visit. (Note: they are currently encouraging yelp reviews and rewarding reviewers a small dish. Please be aware of the recent high star reviews if the stats seems skewed.) So I was arriving around 6 for dinner, and the resturant is starting to fill up. My acommpanie and I went for a rather unorthodox hotpot - the unspicy seafood hot pot. It was flat out salty and plain and was expecting the quality of the meat to be fresher for something that cost almost 40 dollars. What a bomber! Should have learnt my lesson of not ordering non-spicy food in a Korean resturant. The side dishes are spot on and impressive though. So for now, I will keep it as 4 stars before next visit.

Lauren Z.

Yelp
First of all they give so many side dishes! () The new owner is great. The food reminds me of the dishes that I had in Korea. Very authentic and delicious. ~

Julie T.

Yelp
Great food that warms my soul. Loved the ribs and army soup especially. Staff was attentive and fun to chat with.

Tom M.

Yelp
I haven't been here in a while because I moved over to Chapel Hill from Durham. A few disappointing visits to CHill's MinGa prodded my return to Chosun Ok. I can happily report it's still excellent. I'll be back soon.

Xi L.

Yelp
I went there twice (both dine in). Definitely recommend this place!! I ordered the combo (grilled fish and kimchi soup). The price is really good and the lunch special is also really good (till 2:30pm)! They have around 8 types of complementary sides!

Nichole K.

Yelp
Loved this place. We usually go to Honey Pig, but then we found this gem. They don't have seafood that's their only downfall. The rest of the food was excellent. They weren't very busy so they were really attentive with our table. The bulgogi was my favorite, but everything was excellent.
