The 24 Best Restaurants & Hotels In Toronto

"Chotto Matte specializes in Nikkei cuisine, but it’s specifically a great place to go for a standout savory brunch. This Financial District spot with graffitied walls and a heated patio only does brunch on Saturday, but you’ll get the rare treat of a daytime tasting menu filled with shared plates like the robata-grilled Amazonian BBQ salmon, tuna tataki, and a king oyster mushroom tostada. All of it pairs perfectly with the cocktails like the Pisco’Cha, a riff on pisco sour with a touch of matcha." - julia eskins

My partner and I have dined at Chotto Matte several times now in the last couple of years and it is truly a special place. Whether we're celebrating, or just passing by, the staff here are always professional and the food is fantastic. I am Peruvian myself, and while the menu is clearly inspired by this culture, it is an asian-fusion experience as well and should be treated as such (that's a good thing). While I don't always write reviews, my family and I were particularly blown away with our most recent visit and I had to chime in. A huge shout out to our waiter and bartender, Christian, for making every effort to provide an excellent dining experience. We will coming back very soon, I'm sure of it!

Right across from union station! After a long flight from Cali we needed a quick bite that’s refreshing and the moment we walked in they helped us with our luggage’s and hold it for us and we were seated right away. Lounge vibes with live music, great place for drinks and food. Can’t wait to come back. Must get the salmon dish, and the signature roll, chef choice nigiri. Everything was fresh and delicious!

We liked the ambiance and the food. The sushi was delicious; however, I wouldn’t recommend any of the grilled vegetable dishes. It’s a fusion kitchen where you can find both Asian and Mexican dishes, combined together . Although the name “Chotto Matte” might make you think it’s purely Japanese, don’t let the name fool you. They offer a “shareables” menu , if you enjoy eating slowly and trying a variety of dishes, it might be worth a try. However, as a picky eater, I found there were too many dishes I didn’t want to eat and not enough that I did. Ordering individually was also more affordable than the shareables menu. The service was top-notch, just like in most restaurants across Canada. The interior design was strange. I thought it would be an Asian or Japanese restaurant, but when I walked in, I was shocked by the graffiti on the high walls. I know some people love that style, but I couldn’t see the connection between the ambiance and the restaurant’s concept. It just looked weird to me. But it is a fusion restaurant so no judgment. We went on a Saturday around 6:30–7:00 PM, and the restaurant was about half empty, which was a bit surprising. Overall, you can give it a shot, but I wouldn’t call it a hidden gem.

Jungle brunch experience 5/5 Venue 5/5 Ambiance 5/5 Spacious, inviting, extravagant and totally worth the experience. Brunch on Saturdays does get very busy, so be sure to anticipate a 2 hour seating/service as it is a fixed menu. You can ask the gentleman to hold the birds as they are as friendly as they are beautiful. Great venue for kids, birthday parties. I noticed a fairly large patio. Will definitely be checking out their lunch/dinner menu once open.

It had been a while since the last time I went to Chotto Matte and enjoyed my business lunch, enjoying the deluxe bento box. Nice taster of several of the signature dishes. However, since few of the options are fried, it’s not my favourite option. Regardless, it was overall a good experience.

Google
A Truly Exceptional Experience – Every Single Time at Chotto Matte Chotto Matte is hands down my absolute favourite restaurant, and for good reason. I’ve been there countless times, and not once have I been disappointed. It’s incredibly rare to find a place that consistently delivers not just amazing food, but also impeccable service and a truly unforgettable ambiance – and Chotto Matte nails it all. From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with a vibrant energy and a warm, professional welcome from the staff. They’re not only attentive and friendly but also extremely knowledgeable about the menu, always ready with fantastic recommendations that never fail to impress. It’s clear that every team member takes pride in their work, and it really makes the whole experience feel special. The food? Absolutely divine. The fusion of Nikkei cuisine – combining Japanese precision with bold Peruvian flavours – is nothing short of genius. Every dish is a perfect balance of taste, texture, and presentation. Whether it's the sushi, the ceviche, or the robata grill items, everything is executed with such creativity and attention to detail. You can truly taste the quality in every bite. And let’s talk about the ambiance. Chotto Matte offers that rare mix of trendy and sophisticated, yet still cozy and inviting. The decor is vibrant and artistic, the lighting sets the perfect mood, and the music always adds just the right vibe without being overwhelming. It’s the kind of place where you can go for a fun night out with friends or an intimate dinner and still feel completely at ease. It’s more than just a restaurant – it’s an experience, and one I keep coming back to. Chotto Matte has set the bar incredibly high, and thanks to their outstanding team and attention to every detail, it remains a standout every time I visit. Thank you to everyone at Chotto Matte for making every visit so memorable!

Google
A sleek and vibrant fusion spot with a creative menu that blends Japanese and Peruvian influences. The service stood out the most—our server was genuinely kind, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu, which made the experience feel warm and welcoming. We tried the Fire and Water tasting menu along with the bento box. While the presentation was great and there’s definitely variety, most of the dishes were just okay for both me and my friend—nothing particularly mind-blowing in terms of flavour (though maybe just not our taste). That said, the salmon was a standout and absolutely delicious, and I really enjoyed my passion fruit mocktail—super refreshing! The miso soup was alright, nothing special. Overall, a stylish and cozy spot that’s perfect for catching up with friends or family over a laid-back meal. Worth a visit, especially for the atmosphere and hospitality.

Cotton Matte is just amazing for the vegetarian people as well. The pan cakes are the show stoppers. It’s the best $$$ spent for food and experience. The Server Andre gave us all the details as I am very curious person in all the detailing. He told me all the possibilities I can enjoy the amazing food and drinks. I will be looking forward to my next visit as well. The birds are so friendly and amazing in the restaurant.

Yelp
We came on Sat 2025-01-18 to experience the Jungle Brunch. Chotto Matte is an amazing restaurant focusing on Nikkei cuisine. Nikkei are Japanese people who immigrated to Peru. Nikkei cuisine is a fusion of Japanese and Peruvian elements. There is a Sushi Bar, where you can dine at a counter and watch the Sushi chefs ply their culinary art. Along the same lines, there is a Peruvian bar, called a Robata Bar, with the same concept of counter seating where diners can be entertained by the Peruvian grill masters at work. Since it is an open kitchen style, the chef will definitely put on a show. When you enter the restaurant, you are immediately treated with a huge colourful mural. The host can check in your coat. Their dishes are elevated in quality and presentation. And, yes, they are also elevated in price. There are so many servers, all females, from what I observed, cheerfully attending to the diners. The female bartender can really put on a show (when I watched her) while making a cocktail! The vibe is colour, lively, entertaining, and with great food and service. There are several locations around the world, and they all have the same decor. The bright, colourful murals are painted by an artist out of Miami, called "Lefty Out There". He is sent to every location to hand paint the murals. At the upstairs washrooms, the hallways are painted with a neon coloured mural, painted by a different artist (#ElaineDefArtist), which is the most photographed decor at this restaurant. There is a huge main dining area, along with a little blocked-off area if you want more privacy. Near the entrance is a bar lounge where you can relax alongside the huge bar area, which is stocked with many different alcohol. There is lively South American music playing in the background.  Thrre is a live DJ every Wed to Sat. This restaurant has different themes: 1. Sat features a Jungle Brunch, enjoyed by diners of all ages. There is a "bird man" walking around with two exotic tropical birds who can even stand on your arm so you can take pictures with it. There is a lady "fire dancer" who performs with fire. 2. There is Steak and Sushi Sundays. 3. Fri is their "Chotto After Dark" in the lounge area. There is a live DJ, fire dancer, and a special menu. There is a large patio used during warmer  weather. It is decorated with lots of greenery to reflect the Peruvian jungle, giving a different vibe from the concrete jungle of Toronto. Music is very important to the restaurant. In fact, they pipe their music to the outdoor patio all year round! It attracts people to come in and investigate the restaurant. There are many locations around the world. The first location was in London, England. The second location was in Miami, USA. The third location was this location, in Toronto,  Canada, established in 2019. The flooring and windows have a black & white Herring Bone design at all worldwide locations. The ceiling uses preserved wood with a Shou Sugi/Suji Ban, a Japanese technique of charring the wood to preserve it  this is also at all worldwide locations. There are large Italian lava rocks used at the reception/host stand and at the two kitchens. Again, this is at all worldwide locations. The owner and founder is Kurt Zdesar, an experienced restaurateur with a track record in establishing and developing fine dining restaurants throughout Europe. The executive head chef is Jordan Sclare. He has travelled to and cooked in Hong Kong, Japan, Spain, Ireland, Israel, Monaco, Greece and had spent a month in Peru with Kurt Zdesar, eating in all the restaurants Lima had to offer including, carnivals and markets on his search to find the real taste of Peru. The restaurant is wheelchair accessible. There are separate male/female washrooms upstairs, so they are not wheelchair accessible. There is paid neighbourhood street parking. Review 2025-012

Yelp
Innovative and artisanal. After much deliberation, my friend and I each ordered the vegetarian tasting menu. We wanted to try a variety of dishes, with the tasting menu giving the best bang for our buck. We're not strict vegetarians but this set menu version had the most dishes that appealed to us (though it sounded like you could order one of the meat based menus and potentially swap one dish out if it wasn't appealing). However, we felt we couldn't eat here without ordering at least one raw fish dish, so we decided to split a small order of the yellowtail sashimi. Every dish in the tasting was artfully presented and intricately flavored. Everything was delicious, but our favorite was the first course of "lychee ceviche" - the lychee looked so convincingly like raw seafood that I had to double check they gave us the right item. The sauce was an intriguing blend of cilantro oil and something else that I can't pinpoint. Our absolute favorite was actually the yellowtail sashimi though- the flavor combination of cilantro, tomato, soy sauce, and fish was out of this world. Two small dings. My cocktail (the Jade shade (?)) fell flat into lemon-lime soda territory - I was hoping the cardamom and wasabi notes would shine through more. Secondly, while everything in the vegetarian tasting menu was incredible, I would love to see the chefs push their talents and include a dish centered around a vegetarian protein such as tofu or buckwheat - vegetarians eat more than just vegetables! Logistics: - indoor and outdoor seating - reservation recommended but it wasn't terribly crowded on a Wednesday night - limited street parking nearby but very transit accessible - many vegetarian options; potentially gluten free options based on raw ingredients but you'd need to check whether sauces are tamari based; they were careful and accommodating of my friends nut allergy

Yelp
We decided to celebrate a birthday but didn't book anything. Somehow this was the only place that had availabilities at a reasonable time. This restaurant is so cute and so beautifully decorated. It has outdoor and indoor seating. We decided to sit outdoors because the weather was nice. The menu features Japanese and Peruvian food. You can do the tasting menu or a la carte, tapas style. The waiter recommended 3-4 dishes per person however we weren't very hungry. We started with the lychee ceviche. This was a very unusual dish. It had leche de Tigre which was the broth, made with blended fish, sweet potato, corn, and the star--lychee. It was a blend of sweet and savoury and spices. I really liked it because I've never had anything like it before. Next we tried the spicy chicken karaage, which was my favorite dish we ended up ordering another one. It was spicy and crispy and a little sweet and well seasoned. Next we tried the octopus (tentaculos de pulpo). The presentation for this was so nice. It had 5 pieces of grilled octopus, and purple potato puree. I thought it was good, however one of the pieces was inedible (maybe it was just decor?). We also had the BBQ baby back ribs. Very juicy and tender, brushed with a BBQ glaze and nuts sprinkled on top. The nuts added a very nice crunch. Finally we finished with dessert, they brought out a candle (the dessert wasn't free). We ordered the panela caramelized apple dream which was apple, pear topped with vanilla ice cream. It was a huge dessert, definitely shareable. The apple/pear was warm and crispy and soft and the ice cream just complimented it so well. Loved this place, so unique, so delicious. Service was amazing, the DJ was also great. Just great vibes. I'll be coming back for sure!

Yelp
This is the most beautiful, upscale, uplifting place. Amazing DJ on Fridays, delicious food and cocktails. A little bit on the pricey side but the items I have tried so far are delicious. Spicy edamame is so good. My friend loved the crab sushi roll and my favourite is the Kagigori cocktail. Beautiful vibes and amazing decor.

Yelp
At our table for four we went a bit overboard ordering. Likely we should have gone for one of Chotto Matte's tasting menus. Beware that while the individual prices for the tapas style dishes seem reasonable in total it can add up quickly. Very well prepared cocktails, especially their pisco sour. Nice wine list but few options sub $100. Setting cost aside, what you get is a culinary adventure. Rarely can you order 10+ dishes anywhere and have everyone at the table agree that they are all exceptional. I've never really longed to be a vegetation but I could very much consider it after tasting their lychee ceviche, which was as much fun to eat as it was to say. The standard ceviche is excellent as well. Both are essentially identical substituting lychee. You'll find a pic of the Robata duck breast, thinly sliced and succulant. Black cod Aji Miso is a must. Shout out to the yuca fries. Our server was delightful, friendly and informative. As a side note, whether you need to go or not, take a walk upstairs to the washrooms. It's an experience. If possible leave room for dessert. We failed and shared just one passion fruit crème brûlée which as my wife would say, "was to die for".

Yelp
Came here because of a friend's recommendation and it was a great experience, would recommend! Upon entering the restaurant, you can immediately tell that they put a lot of effort into the design and architecture. The hostess was very nice, offering to take all our shopping bags and coats. We had a reservation and were seated almost immediately, though the place was not that full, maybe 50% occupied? The 5 of us all got the tasting menu as well as a few drinks each. I've experienced a lot of tasting menus, but not one where not everyone got their own plate/dishes? Knocked them down a star for this. It was a bit odd and inconvenient to have to split one plate of fried chicken between the five of us. Most of the dishes in the tasting menu were at least split into 2 plates for the 5 of us to share, but it was still weird. The timing was also not great - dishes were coming out way faster than we could eat them. I'm more used to tasting menus where everyone each gets a dish and the next item didn't come out until the previous one is finished. But here, we would have up to 5 unique dishes at one time, making the table very packed and since the dishes weren't split individually, some people missed out on trying a dish because they didn't realize it was there. The staff was very nice though, happy to give recommendations and share their favorite drinks to try!

Yelp
On our last visit, the restaurant made a mistake by only giving us food portions for 2 people when we had a party of 4. We had 2 gift cards to their Chef Experience for two (meaning 4 people), but our server overlooked that we had 2 experiences for two. Throughout the meal, I brought up that it appears the food is only for 2 people, to which they said the portions are correct and advised us to order more. Basically trying to upsell us on an already expensive dinner, which made it very uncomfortable and really ruined the night. We were brought sushi that only had 2 of each type and shared by biting each piece in half. What a joke! The mistake was finally understood when the meal was over and the bill was being settled. We were offered a refund for the unused card or to return as a party of 4 to have the experience made right. The manager said "he would take care of us". We opted to return at a later date. I refrained from going into detail about the incident in the previous review because I thought it'd be fair to give them the chance to correct the error. Today I called back to book our return, and was thoroughly disappointed and frustrated. They took minimal ownership of the initial poor experience, stating that we can return and use the remaining experience for 2, but will have to order more food. So basically, they made a mistake that ruined the meal we already paid for, but are inviting us back for the same bad experience? The manager I talked to offered a round of drinks as compromise, and stated that that is the best the GM can offer because "it's too expensive" to give us another experience for 2. I agree it's expensive. And your restaurant messed up on an expensive experience and said you would make it right. The other option was for only one pair to return. This was a birthday gift from a cousin for the 2 couples to enjoy together. Why would only one pair return? I don't think any reasonable person would think an invitation to return as the full party and for the experience to be corrected would mean to come back for the exact same thing. From their website - "Discover our bespoke Chef Experience, designed to surprise and delight. Meet our Chef, and explore some of the most premium dishes that Chotto has to offer. Tailoring to your preferences and requirements, our Chef will curate your menu for a unique experience." This is also a lie. We met no chef and nothing was tailored to our preferences as we were never asked of any preferences. The general manager's inability to correct this wrong properly shows their lack of customer focus, lack of business sense, and how short-sighted they are. We did not ask for a full chef experience to be comped, just enough extra food to feed the party. Like a sushi platter or a couple of extra entrees. They would rather give a full refund than take a small loss to salvage future customers. Now we will not go there again and we will not recommend any friends and family to go.

Yelp
I heard mixed opinions about Chotto Matte, primarily driven by the price of the food, however I had an incredible meal that was definitely worth every penny! Definitely go the tasting menu route. For $95 I had 8 courses, while my friends ordered a la carte and had a fraction of the food for 75% of the price. And yes, they do let some get the tasting menu even if the whole table doesn't participate. Virtually every dish was a hit, minus the salmon which had a sauce with a weird taste. The chicken dish in particular was one of the best I've ever had! And the churro at the end was to die for as well. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
The overall experience was excellent, from start to finish. The service was impeccable and staff were able to resolve any issues we had. The head chef came out to greet us about what we wanted to experience and curated a menu that hit our tastebuds on the bullseye. The highlight of the meal was definitely the A5 Australian wagyu, which was an experience for both the eyes and the tastebuds. We also appreciated the opportunity to try out his oyster mushroom original special, which was spectacular and delicious. We look forward to coming back to Chotto Matte in the many years to come!

Yelp
This place was highly recommended by some friends who have traveled to Toronto, and it did not disappoint. .... We made reservations for a late dinner on a Friday night, and it wasn't super packed even though service ran a bit slower due to every plate being made to order. Upon arriving, you will notice the lavish decor and high-end luxury vibes all throughout the bar and main restaurant space. We decided to sit outside and got a nice table that allowed us to see the needle from our seats. It was a nice touch, truly. The only problem was when folks stood so close to taking a picture that it felt like they were right on top of us-- full warning. Service was still at a nice pace. We enjoyed our drinks and apps. Our server made a mistake and quickly rectified it. Our food came out as we ordered it, and tasty. We ordered a bunch of apps and some sushi and shared everything family-style. The presentation was Instagrammable! A beautiful presentation + tasty ingredients = a foodie's paradise. The drinks were also boozy. The dress code was casual chic, but you can dress up and have a nice sit-down dinner here, whether a girls/guys night out or a date for two.

Yelp
4.5 I had a great lunch here! I was really excited to try this place and was so happy they have halal options. There's a few meat dishes which aren't halal, but the majority are! I got a set menu during lunch which allowed you to try multiple dishes. My favourites were the chicken karage and ceviche. The ambience is quite nice - it's a bustling restaurant with bright colours. The tables do get rather full though - there is a lot of food served during the lunch set menu. The service was prompt and friendly. I would return for special occasions.

Yelp
Nice decor, typical financial district vibe with the bar and the customers. I was not expecting much for food so I was really surprised the flavours were good! All the seafood was really fresh even down to the tempura shrimp in the rolls. Would definitely come here again!

Yelp
We live so close by and this place has been on our list forever.. The chotto hour, which is their happy hour, is very good. 2 for 1 drinks is amazing but they don't let you mix and match. You need to get two of this same drinks. Their cocktails are amazing and very pretty. I really liked the fairly priced app menu for the happy hour as well. Pollo picante and shishito peppers were very flavorful. Our waiter, George, is very good. Friendly, personable and gave great recommendations. Overall, such a great place for a happy hour!

Yelp
I've been to Chotto many, many times. Every time I feel like it's been good. Cocktails are so nice and there's ample room especially on weekends for us- as we are downtowners. However, recently when we went, I was so very shocked at the lack of quality- the standard tostadas we ordered were stale, and the fish was fishy and old tasting ... I'm going to have to rethink coming here on a whim. Please up your standards even on a slow, weekend night! Very sad to see the quality go down.

Yelp
What a glorious meal we had @chottomattetor today! Chotto Matte is a Nikkei-inspired Peruvian restaurant with an extensive menu. They offer a la carte, lunch bento boxes, and a tasting menu. We went with their 5 course tasting menu only for $65pp since we had a hard time deciding and we were not disappointed- our favorites were their ceviche, and Asado beef (it was so tender it melted in your mouth)! The least favorite item was the tuna with crispy rice, which I thought was a bit dry. The cocktail was also quite unique; it was not sweet at all which I loved, but I suppose the celery bitters made it taste like Chinese medicine at my first sip...then it started to grow on me. Service was also impeccable, we will definitey return for their brunch! Pictured: Edamame, Asado Beef, Chaufa, Tuna crispy rice, Chicken karage, Ceviche,BBQ Salmon with gogi berries, and yuca fries.

Yelp
Well thought out avant-garde concept and well executed, just wasn't for me. Chotto Matte is a unique upscale Japanese Peruvian fusion restaurant that offers small sharing plates to guests. In this tapas style of dining, we had an intimate experience at a small round table that was packed closely to the other guests. The music, dim lighting, and funky coloured accents made it feel like an exclusive night club. Our server started off asking if we wanted still or sparkling water, a standard question among most restaurants. If you would not like to pay $10 for still water, provide another option of asking for tap water. He recommended we order 3-5 dishes each as we'd be sharing among us. The menu taught us about the process, where colder dishes would be served first and the fuller bodied dishes would be served following. I'm a fan of big portions and full flavours, these dishes only provided the latter. Totally understandable given the concept of the restaurant. One of those "let's go to McDonald's after" experiences that people joke about. If it were not for our fried rice dish, I would have still been hungry no matter how many fish dishes I ate (I'm a growing girl!). Jokes aside, the food itself was delicious. There was not one dish that we didn't like. The Amazonian BBQ salmon was rich and buttery, the salmon tartare had great textural elements, and the live torching of our sushi roll was very entertaining. It was also our friend's birthday so they provided us a free mochi ice cream dessert with a sparkler. They take jackets at the beginning too as the space is already tight with just our bodies. Would not return here to satisfy my hunger but rather to satisfy a craving for the salmon!

Yelp
For NYE Dinner we decided to try Chotto Matte. They had a set menu for the night and depending on which seating you had (early or late), the menu items and price varies. . . Spicy Edamame 4/5 Yellowtail "Nikkei Sashimi" 3.75/5 Patto A La Parrilla 4/5 Dressed Sushi Selection 4.7/5 Black Cod Aji Miso 5/5 Chuleta De Cordero Ahumada 4/5 Arroz Chaufa 0.5/5 Dessert (passionfruit crème brûlée, lychee and matcha mochi, chocolate lava cake with vanilla ice cream) 4.5/5 . . Overall we really enjoyed the flavours of all the dishes. My top favourites were the cod and sushi selection and my bf's was the lamb chop and sushi selection. The only complaints we have are that the fried rice tasted really weird... flavours didn't go well together. The portions of all the dishes are also really small.... price to portion ratio is way off. Every photo here is two people portion, except the cod and sushi selection.

Yelp
This was the best restaurant I visited while in Toronto. Every aspect was fantastic, the service was excellent and so helpful and our server answered every question we asked! They have a great selection of drinks and the mocktail options are great too, I absolutely loved the Flor De La Pasión. The food was also delicious! Everything I had was so good and I loved the presentation. There were also a ton of options and definitely something for everyone. It was a little loud inside but I did love the ambiance and loved being able to see inside all of the kitchens. The manager also came over and was kind enough to gift us a dessert platter which was a total surprise but made the experience even better. I definitely would put this on my must-visit list!

Yelp
My friends and I visited chotto matte yesterday after having talked about wanting to go for a long time. When we arrived they took our coats at the front and sat us right away. The ambiance was nice the music was great. As soon as we were seated our server asked us if we wanted "still water, sparkling water, or tequila shots" to start off. We said still which we didn't realize was a mistake until later. Our server cracked open a water bottle for us and we didn't think anything of it. It was when he cracked open a second one we realized we were going to be charged, which was ridiculous considering he never once thought to imply that still water wasn't tap water. It was sly of our waiter to keep bringing us bottled water. In terms of food everything tasted amazing, although the portions were very small. We ordered the shishito peppers, yuca frita, salmon tartare, Arroz Chaufa, dragon roll, sato maki, and the Amazonian bbq salmon. We were also celebrating a birthday so they brought us a mini mochi ice cream dessert.

Yelp
Chotto matte is a Nikkei restaurant which is a fusion of Japanese and Peruvian cuisine that serves small sharing plates. It was a great meal, from the service, to the lush greenery enclosed patio, to the tasty menu. I look forward to returning for their famous "Jungle Brunch" on another visit.

Yelp
A real gem on Bay Street, downtown Toronto. Chotto Matte ちょっと待って means wait a second in Japanese. This is a Japanese-Peruvian fusion restaurant with one-of-a-kind murals and striking decors, a unique, creative menu, and good service. It's basically Japanese food, tapas style. We loved the gambas (big prawns), octopus (sauce in pink and potato puree in purple, matching octopus color!), yellowtail sashimi-ceviche fusion, karaage (fried chicken, Japanese style), and slow cooked beef stew. Everything is beautifully presented and so flavorful. While dining here birds came in. Yes chirping birds. Real birds. Flying across the tall ceiling. They came in through the door. The restaurant had so many plants (real plants!) that it felt like a green house or garden. Adding to that, icing on the cake so to speak, real birds. It was really awesome. Waiters confirmed birds loved coming in here. The restrooms are upstairs, and even there you will find murals that delight the eyes. Luminescent murals that is, reflected by mirror-like black walls. The drawback is that the restroom is so dimly lit you can't even see your own hands. No lighting except for the ring light around small mirrors (see my photos). Everything is black: ceiling, walls, floor, toilet itself. Service was prompt, friendly, and passionate. They are proud of the place (great sign). Staff seemed happy to work here. But be sure to walk half way up the stairs just to admire the murals of ground floor (from a higher vantage point). Bar area is beautiful too.

Yelp
This is one of those restaurants where everything is amazing. Serving small plates and shareable, this gorgeous venue has a great variety; something for everyone. I got the shrimp spring rolls($16) to start. Very tasty and very light. Not worried about spoiling my dinner. My main was the Amazonian BBQ Salmon($23). Ima nice piece if salmon topped with goji berries, pecans, cilantro and smothered in their jungle curry sauce set atop purple potato purée. It was freaking delicious. We shared a dessert platter($30 I think). It had everything, grilled pineapple, chocolate, mochi, sorbet and even matcha waffles! Highly recommended if you have a sweet tooth!

Yelp
Hands down my favourite restaurant in Toronto! A bit expensive but there are a few dishes that are so good that makes it worth it. I have been here a few times and tried a lot of items on the menu and are are my few must-order: - Soft shell crab roll - Wagyu aburi - Yellowtail "Nikkei Sashimi" - Otoro aburi hibachi grill - Cauliflower wings - Calabacin parilla zucchini Skip the fried rice though. That's probably one of the only item on the menu I didn't enjoy at all. The service is always good! They have a covered and super cute patio space as well.

Yelp
First time patronizing, was greeted warmly and served By Kristian & Ysanath (spelling?) they were both very friendly & recommended drinks suitable for the weather... I had Asahi on Tap + Chablis & my guest had Pinot Gris. We ordered the sashimi platter, Octopus... & black Cod...all very tasty & delicious... will return again..

Yelp
Came here with a friend after work and it was pretty busy, we were seated by the sushi station which was totally fine (bonus, got to see the chef's roll sushi). We went closer to the evening so the atmosphere was pretty dim, lots of plants and greenery which felt very comfortable and cozy. We ordered a few appetizers and a small bottle of sake. My friend who is vegetarian had some nice options while I opt to get a sushi roll as I was not that hungry. We ordered the eggplant dish, tempura shrimp maki roll and yuca frita (cassava wedges). Presentations were amazing, so pretty, colorful and clean. My tempura roll was pretty average, nothing special, really liked the yuca (crispy) paired really well with the dipping sauce (forgot what it was called). Prices are a bit steep but what do you expected as they cater to a lot of white collars. It's definitely a great place to have group dinners, I would say during the evening it can get quite loud so would not be ideal to "catch up" with friends. Possibly better to do it during the day over lunch.

Yelp
Came here for a team event, and we got the Nikkei Menu Deluxe, which cost $180 per head. I kid you not, the food just kept on coming! Service here is great - we were served by Jasmine, and she was so friendly. She got us started off with drinks; I opted for the pisco peach. It was not too sweet, quite light, but not really peachy. Through the course of the meal, I also tried the Flor De Manzana (despite being the restaurant's "most fruity" drink, I didn't particularly enjoy it) and the espresso martini (nice, but too sweet for me). The food then came in quick succession (as we asked), starting with the blistered grilled shishito peppers. These peppers are topped with flaky salt and a creamy, salty, miso dressing. They're cooked to the point of being quite soft and tender - but be careful! There are some odd ones that are spicy. Then came the wagyu beef gyoza / dumplings - two per person. These were okay, honestly a bit dry. The meat inside was crumbly, didn't seem like wagyu at all... Quickly following were the sato maki, which included yellowtail, salmon, asparagus, and daikon. These maki rolls are seared aburi-style table-side, and they're really quite good! The lime soy dressing / marinade is nice and tangy, and brings out the flavours. The two sashimi plates came out at once - the spicy o-toro sashimi (flavoured with wasabi) and yellowtail "nikkei sashimi". The o-toro was really mediocre; it was tough and wasn't all that spicy. I actually found it underseasoned and a bit chewy / dry. The yellowtail, however, was phenomenal! it was like a ceviche - I loved the bright flavours. It was tangy from the vinaigrette, and I adored the juxtaposition of textures (the crunchy purple potato chips + softer sashimi). The BBQ broccoli (was actually broccolini) came out after, offering a needed reprise of vegetables. Though good, this dish was far too salty. I had to drink so much water after this! The dish packs a punch - I didn't know it was BBQ at first, and found it to be a salty, spicier teriyaki. I liked the seared corn and crispy cashew adornments, and the lime / vinegar solution helped pique the flavours. It is a heavier vegetable dish in terms of flavour, but quite good. I also tried some of my vegetarian colleague's nasu miso (eggplant miso). It was really good - the eggplant was cooked to be just the right amount of soft and tender, and I liked the sweeter, crunchy apricot and sesame seeds on top. Almost like a candied sesame! It was a softer flavour palette than the other dishes (which really hit you in the face), and I appreciated it. Then came the octopus tentacles (Tentáculos de Pulpo). It was mediocre tbh - my dairy-free version was tough, dry, and chewy. The one with dairy is crispier on the outside but still chewy. Overall, not a fan, and I usually like octopus dishes. Looking through the menu now, I realize they missed the Nikkei Jalea Mixta Deluxe, a plate of assorted tempura. I think I would've liked to try it!! :( The black cod came, stealing the show for many. I tried a dairy-free version and, though moist and flakey, paled compared to the version with dairy. That one was so buttery and rich; the dairy-free alternative used a tangy citrus-based sauce instead (maybe yuzu?), which was really interesting with the black cod. I wonder why they didn't opt for a soy sauce reduction instead, like the typical sushi places. The final main was the wagyu beef sirloin. This hunk of meat was seared a perfect medium rare, and I loved the thick flakes of sea salt on top. However, I honestly couldn't tell it was wagyu - it didn't have the same melt-in-your-mouth qualities as its Japanese counterparts. Finally came dessert. We were astonished to learn that we each get our individual platter - the amount of food here was enough for us to have as a main! There was a baked alaska topped with caramel popcorn, which also came with a mango coulis to dribble on top (didn't particularly love this dessert - the inside ice cream tasted like cotton candy and it was far too sweet), a bunch of ice-cream mochi (delicious!), small pyramid-shaped butter cakes, a molten chocolate lava cake (soooo good and rich), and raspberry gelato with toasted coconut flakes (also so good, cut the richness). It was interesting that the "vegetarian" option came with only ice cream mochi - makes you wonder what meat products they have in the others (gelatin? who knows...). It was an enjoyable and wild meal, enhanced by the electric cellist who came around the tables playing her instrument. Definitely a great place to come if you're hoping for a team event or to please a crowd!

Yelp
I was sorely mistaken in my previous review (I had given them 3 stars). I was absolutely delighted with their tasting menu on my second visit. I don't know how much that has to do with the fact that I wasn't the one paying for it this time.... but let me tell you! Everything was fantastic. We were in a group of 8. We had the tasting menu. One in our group was pregnant, but no problem. She was taken care of very well and food substituted to suit her. Everything was explained to us in great detail, every item on the tasting menu tasted great, and was of a high quality. We went the whole nine yards with the food and the wine. Unfortunately, as this was a client meeting, I didn't have the audacity to pull out my phone and take pictures of everything. You'll have to take my word, that everything looked as beautiful as it tasted. What I will stick to from my last review is that it is a great place to host people (clients) and have a meal that will be memorable. The restaurant has put a lot of attention to detail to make it so. My second recommendation is, let someone else pickup the tab. It makes the food taste even better. Go figure!

Yelp
Right across union station is this beautiful little jungle oasis. It's beautifully decorated and picture worthy. They do a good job with the decor to help you forget you're in the city. After visiting a few higher end patios, this one probably stands out the most. It's Japanese-Peruvian fusion food. The food (though expensive) had good flavour profiles and made of high quality. So here's our favourite dishes of the night: - Nikkei Jalea Mixta Deluxe: lightly airy version of shrimp & baby squid tempura with a bottle of liquid aioli type sauce that your pour on. I wanted to order more of this but had to restrain myself. - Yellowtail nikkei sashimi: just delicious. Balanced flavours. - Black Cod Aji Miso: My favourite dish of the night but it was the most expensive item. A lot of umami flavour to it. But if you're on a budget, you can skip this. It literally taste like the bbq eel sushi you normally get at sushi restaurants. Delicious but the flavours weren't entirely "new" for me. Dishes that coasted in the middle: - tentaculos de pulpo octopus: this is the one everyone keeps posting on social media. The octopus with the pink/purple dots. It felt like I was chewing for awhile and the flavours were not bad. I couldn't really distinguish what I was tasting. It was looked better than it tasted though it didn't taste bad. Things I probably wouldn't order again: - Sato Maki II ONM (open naked maki)- a bit bland. Didn't spark joy. Meh. - Chotto Ceviche: colourful and beautiful but was too sour for our liking. Service was good. Ambiance is gorgeous. The bathroom is also quite interesting so I'd wash my hands or pee if I were you lol. I deducted a star because $$$.

Yelp
Overpriced af, slow as fuck service, for imo 7/10 food. Their Nikkei menu portions are pathetically small, even after all 8-10 dishes I was barely full. The fact that the portion for dessert was three times the size of any dish served goes to show their portion size. I know times are tough and shit is expensive but I for once was very glad I didn't have to pay the bill for this meal. The service was good but dreadfully slow. It took us well over an hour to be able to place an order, each dish took more than 45 minutes to come out, and I kid you not, it took an hour for the dessert to come (and half our table had left). We literally arrived at 7pm and left at 10pm not of our choice but because the service was that slow. Thank god for some amazing company from my colleagues at work Catch me dead coming here myself with friends or my man.

Yelp
Vibrant, fun option in the heart of Bay Street. The perfect happy hour or dinner spot for the young professional or young at heart. Expansive menu includes lots of sushi fare (yum all around) and other Japanese offerings. Partial to their Wagyu gyoza dessert platter, and spicy chicken karaage

Yelp
great ambiance. service is very good. as an Asian who is fond of Japanese cuisine, the fusion dishes by Chotto Matte is an alternative to explore Canadian Japanese dishes.

Yelp
This is some of the greatest food I've ever eaten!!! Every bite is a little bit of heaven. Some very creative dishes, bustling with unique flavors. Jess, Arby, and the staff and management were wonderful and friendly, answering all of our questions, and laughing along with us. Please, please eat here!!!

Yelp
After seeing all the aesthetic photos on Instagram, decided to jump in and try this place out! We got a spot on the patio. Had the Amazonian bbq salmon for my main and got the flor de manzana drink as recommended by the waitress. The presentation of both looked beautiful! The salmon came with a purple yam sauce which was yummy. The drink also had the right level of sweetness for me. I came here looking for something to munch on but wasn't too hungry. I think the portions were on the smaller end but the waitress mentioned the menu is designed for you to share several dishes with others. Overall decent meal on a patio - I wouldn't mind visiting again.

Yelp
We made a reservation and came on a holiday monday for our anniversary. I had the vegan and gluten free tasting menu and hubby had the beef one. It was a LOT of food and hubby actually ended up wasting some. The edamame was roasted vs sauteed so on the drier side but good. The sweet potato course was tasty and my sauce was vegan while hubby's had yogurt. The first 4 courses came out almost at the same time so we had to tell them to slow it down. The ceviche was so refreshing and sour. Hubby did not like his drink (very watery) so he switched to something else that was better. The salad was ok....I didn't care too much for it due to the excessive seaweed. The sushi was very tasty and filling....4 big pieces. The shishito peppers were very good and made in a sauce but the serving was big and the taste became overpowering after a few. Hubby got decent portions of ribs and steaks but could not finish them. My eggplant was cooked very well and tasty. My mushroom tostada tasted great but I was so full by then so I didn't enjoy it as I should have. I got vegan mochi ice cream and hubby got a trio of desserts both plated with sparklers and "happy anniversary" written on our plates. It was a fun experience with good service but getting up that huge flight of stairs to use the washroom after eating all that food was not fun. I would order a la carte next time so I can fully enjoy my items without being stuffed.

Yelp
Jungle brunch review! Food 5/5: Everything was delicious. The best part is that it was a lottt of food so definitely worth the money. I had the best fried rice ever was soft and flavourful, most delicious thick cassava fries, best edamame with a nice and burnt flavour, softest and most tender beef I've ever had, best purple yam ever, I can go on and on everything was A+. Ambience 5/5: To accompany this delicious food were very lively performances. There was fire breathing, acrobatics, birds etc. I felt like I was in the jungle in a good way. Would return 100% to see what other unique experiences they have to offer. And for the food :)

Yelp
Went here for my cousin's graduation late lunch/early dinner! The servers are incredibly attentive, they kept checking in with me to see if I'm okay since my family members were quite late. The food and ambiance were great! The portions are quite small, although they did recommend the set menus for groups but those started at 95/pp which is quite steep! I wouldn't say the food was amazing or 100% worth the high price tag but it was definitely nice to try once. It's in a very central location and very good for groups!

Yelp
Chotto Matte is an upscale and modern restaurant serving Peruvian-Japanese fusion (Nikkei) cuisine. One of the best things about this restaurant is the vibe and ambience - great upbeat music, lively atmosphere, classy vibe, and nice entertainment (e.g. ribbon gymnast dressed in a jungle animal suit, fire eater / performer, etc.). Interior décor is beautiful and colourful. The food is also excellent. The menu is divided into tasting menu (usually several dishes per person, with meat and vegetarian options) and a la carte. The "Jungle Brunch" on weekends consists of a set tasting menu. We opted for the a la carte to get more variety of items from the full menu, and it did not disappoint! All of the dishes are tapa-sized, which is perfect for sharing and trying lots of different things. I found a lot of the dishes to be unique and stay true to the Nikkei essence, especially the combination of ingredients and flavours. The presentation of the dishes and plating are definitely Instagram-worthy. All the dishes are colourful and presented & arranged so nicely. The service is top-notch. Right from the moment you walk into the door and greeted by the host, to being seated, ordering, and having a whole dining experience, all the staff took really good care of us. The server asked us if it was our first time there, and explained the menu. They were able to modify some dishes and ingredients (e.g. made everything non-spicy), and were very accommodating. The dishes came out in rapid successions. My favourites were the Black Cod Aji Miso, Wood Fired Bok Choy, Arroz Chaufa, and Nasu Miso. The 12 tapa-style dishes that we ordered: - Jungle Salad (green papaya, mango, daikon, red onion, pomegranate, cashews, seaweed, furikake, yellow chilli dressing): Light and refreshing salad, love the seaweed addition - Tuna Crispy Rice Sushi (tuna tartare on crispy rice, with scallions and Peruvian chilli): Super crispy rice! - Nikkei Yellowtail Sashimi (yellowtail fish, cherry tomatoes, jalapeño, cilantro, yuzu truffle soy): Quite flavourful, but a bit heavy on the soy sauce - King Oyster Mushrooms Tostadas (pulled oyster mushrooms, smoked aji panca chili, guacamole, lime, and cilantro on crispy corn tostadas): Spicy! - Nasu Miso (eggplant, apricots, puffed soba, sesame seeds, miso seasoning): The eggplant and apricots combination is unique but works very well. - Wood Fired Bok Choy (with pomegranates, ginger, garlic soy): Great complement to all the other dishes - Black Cod Aji Miso (with chili miso marinade, yuzu, chives): My FAVOURITE dish! Crispy grill char and nice tender black cod fish (one of my favourite fish). - Amazonian BBQ Salmon (with goji berries, pecan nuts, cilantro, jungle curry, and smoked purple potato purée): If you don't like BBQ sauce (too sweet), you won't like this. The "jungle curry" tastes like BBQ sauce. - Tentáculos de Pulpo (grilled octopus with yuzu and purple potato purée): Not a big fan of the sauce, but the octopus itself is ok. - Arroz Chaufa (Peruvian egg fried rice with shrimps, vegetables, sesame soy): Another one of my favourite dishes that I tried. Not oily at all, great taste without being overly salty. I wish they added more peas and corn mixed in with the rice. - Smoked Purple Potato Mash (apple wood smoked purple potato purée): Compared to the truffled version, the one with truffle is way better. - Truffled Purple Potato Mash (apple wood smoked purple potato purée with black truffle): You can really taste the black truffle in this one.

Yelp
This was our first experience on a patio after this long lockdown and we were not disappointed. The menu prices are not for the faint of heart but everything was fabulous and I can recommend it enough. The patio was beautiful with so many huge plants making you feel very tropical. The service was perfect. Always around when you needed something and they spaced out the food we ordered flawlessly. Our server was so friendly and polite. We got three different cocktails. Flor de manazana-it was nice. Very fruity and really pretty garnish. He's so smoking-mind blowingly amazing. Perfectly balanced. I could have drank those all night if they weren't 20$ each. They even bring it out in a glass bottle with smoke in it then pour it at the table. What a nice touch! Lima old fashioned-too sweet for me but my man LOVED it. We also tried a good selection of the food. Top contenders were the slow cooked beef on purple potatoes. Holy Hannah. It was so tender and flavourful. The crispy rice with spicy salmon had such a nice texture! The other favourite was the pork belly. Normally I'm not a huge fan of that but the hostess said it was her favourite so we gave it a shot. Wow! Perfectly cooked. Crispy in all the right places and then melt in your mouth with a slightly spicy sauce. What a great job by all the staff! Thank you for the wonderful evening :)

Yelp
Very trendy and cool restaurant! Drinks were absolutely amazing but I think the restaurant decor and design was what stole the show. Food was fine but really expensive and we all left still hungry unfortunately. I'd come back for drinks and vibes.

Yelp
Ridiculously good food. My second time here last Friday and this time brought my wife here. I haven't had a single bad bite in my two visits - but this time our waiter Joseph (Yosef?) had a mind meld with my wife and I and it was an even better experience. If you aren't sure what to get, get anything involving sea food or is off the bamboo grill.

Yelp
Really outstanding food, labelled as Peruvian-Japanese fusion. But whatever it is, it's great! We ordered two tasting menus and there wasn't a bad dish. Some highlights included the Chotto Ceviche, Pollo den Miso, Shishito Peppers and many others. My only criticism would be that not all servers clearly stated what we were being served as it was happening. Speak up! :)

Yelp
I've been really enjoying creative fusion food in the past few years and when I found out that Chotto Matte was a Japanese-Peruvian fusion place, I decided that I must have it for my birthday this year. I was not disappointed. I ordered two of their tasting menus and especially enjoyed their Nikkei sashimi, miso black cod, Shishito peppers, and asado de tira. These were flavor combinations that I've never experienced before, so it was very new and exciting. Throughout my meal I was constantly trying to decipher what the flavor combinations that I was experiencing. Is that a hint of miso with lime? Beef short ribs with purple yam? Outrageous! I would definitely recommend Chotto Matte to anyone who's into fusion food or down to try something new. It's definitely not Japanese food in the traditional sense so don't expect to find that Chotto Matte is authentic Japanese food, or even compare it to other dishes you've had before rather be prepared to experience new flavor combinations and keep an open mind.

Yelp
Came here for the jungle brunch and had a fantastic experience! The decor and atmosphere makes it truly feel like the "jungle". The performers were super talented and had the most hospitable server. The food was stunning and tasted great. Drinks were alright, slightly watered down. Overall, a fantastic experience and would recommend for special occasions!

Yelp
$$$$ Definitely on the pricier side but it was good service and the food was very delish! You've gotta savour each piece because the flavors are so intertwined with one another and it makes the dish whole. I forgot exactly what we got but each tapas was very tasty. Also each dish was around $20 just so everyone knows what your budget should be. :) I would highly recommend it if it's your first time in Toronto. The fusion is amazing!

Yelp
Amazing vibe and food.. loved the ambiance and the small touches.. we went for a birthday celebration and they gave us a complimentary drink with our meal! .. love the attention to detail by the staff.. our server also made sure we were served promptly so we could catch our show after dinner! The only reason it's one star less is because some of the sauces we were served were over salted.. but that can be overlooked as it's a side sauce and I chose not to use it! The steak was cooked perfectly and the papaya salad was such a great fresh contrast to the meat! Thank you to the team for a lovely evening out for me and my hubby!

Yelp
From the front desk and most especially the server, thank you very much! We also appreciate the Chef's complimentary mochi ice cream to capped-off our celebration for my Daughter's graduation. It was a very good first time experience to Chotto Matte. Can't wait to be back and bring our friends to experience your tasty cuisine -- and most, the awesome service. Keep it up!

Yelp
Had the chef's special and it was a culinary experience that I can't get off my mind. The flavours were amazing and original. Service was impeccable
