I'm a sucker for Christmas. I'm one of those Hallmark Channel Christmas movie-watching, Christmas cookie-baking, Christmas carol-listening fans of the season. I'm generally not a fan of Christmas comedies, however. One exception is the film, Christmas Vacation. Therefore, when I heard about Christmas Club, a holiday-themed popup bar in Wrigleyville, on the news, and when I looked at its menu online, I was thrilled! Christmas Club offers Cousin Eddie's Egg Nog (an alcoholic cocktail)! Cousin Eddie is, of course, a character from Christmas Vacation. Sign. Me. Up.
My husband and I visited on a Monday night right after we visited another Christmas-themed popup bar down the street, a pop that was more ornately decorated, so we weren't as dazzled with the decorations as perhaps we would have been if Christmas Club had been our first stop. Alas, Christmas Club is adorable, with giant Santa hats on each stool and lots of lights.
Christmas Club was not busy when we arrived, and we easily found seats at the bar. We were also greeted immediately. When we chatted with the bartender and ordered our Cousin Eddie's Egg Nogs, she told us that they come in souvenir moose mugs that patrons get to keep!
What???
I had seen a moose mug photo on the website, but I didn't know that our Cousin Eddie Egg Nogs would actually be served in them or that we'd get to keep these treasures! If Christmas Club would've been advertising this aspect (Note: This fact needs to be added to the PDF menus at the very least.), I would have been running to Christmas Club even faster than I did. Talk about a major selling point! The moose mugs don't look like the clear glass ones in the film, Christmas Vacation. They are plastic, and the moose is in color, making the moose look like a cartoon character. Alas, they are delightful! Our Cousin Eddie Egg Nogs were less sweet than the hot chocolate we shared at another nearby holiday popup bar, a welcome reprieve from intense sugar; the cost of the beverages were exactly the same ($12), but, in the case of Christmas Club, we got to keep the moose mugs! Bargain! Score! Holiday kitch bliss!
We were so pleased with the mugs that we bought a third mug without egg nog for $6 to bring to my brother in Michigan. Yes, little brother, there is a Santa Claus.
I know the bling of the other holiday popup bar is impressive, but you do not want to miss Christmas Club's yummy whipped cream and cookie-topped Cousin Eddie's Egg Nog in souvenir moose mugs!
