The 29 Best Restaurants in Columbus, Ohio | Eater

"Spice, flavor, and culture are at the forefront of Chuan Jiang Hao Zi, a Chinese restaurant specializing in traditional Szechuan fare. The extensive menu includes dishes not often seen in Columbus, such as pig ear with chili oil, fried spicy intestines, Chengdu spicy boiled roast duck, and boiled pork tripe and beef aorta. For those feeling less audacious, the flavorful mapo tofu, salt and pepper shrimp, stir-fried chile pork ribs, and chili oil wontons may align more to your tastes. But don’t let all the chili oil on the menu fool you; there’s more to Chuan Jiang Hao Zi than spice. The restaurant also serves dim sum and an extensive series of tea lattes and cappuccinos." - Angela Lee

We went to this restaurant without a lot of expectations, but were pleasantly surprised with the food. Menu was mostly consisted of Sichaun/Schezwan style food (very similar to Chili Spot in Kenny center) and the taste was great and there were both spicy(numbing) and non spicy option which were loved by our whole family.

Google
Massive quantities of food for a very very affordable price. We came on a business trip and accidentally ordered too much. We couldn't even box things to take back becuse we were leaving the next day. Needless to say, we felt really bad leaving leftovers. Food was authentic and good (per my Chinese colleague). I personally thought it was fantastic. There was plenty of seating in the building, the layout is well spaced with communal tables that have a rotating platform in the middle. Waiters were polite and food came reasonable quick. Excellent restaurant.

Google
First time customer. We searched for a restaurant in the area to have Sichuan Peppercorn Fish and found this gem. The deep fried chicken and boiled fish fillets in hot chili oil. Both were outstanding and very filling. Exactly what we were looking for today. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Google
Great authentic Chinese restaurant!! We tried fish fillet in Szechuan green pepper broth, house special pig feet soup and shredded pork with garlic sauce. Highlights of the day is the latter two dishes. Fish fillet soup is bit salty. I have read about their food, These dishes represent actual Chinese cuisine in China in my opinion. Out of the three, shredded pork with garlic sauce is my favorite. Great service, great people, love the atmosphere. Not hesitate to go there again.

Google
Everything about this was amazing. Portions are very large, you don’t need one meal to yourself. We went family style and barely made a dent. Staff is amazing.

Google
Excellent and original Chinese- American food. I have eaten here several times and every time the food (whatever we ordered) was delicious! The wanton soup is the extraordinary and my highest recommendation.

Google
Subpar dim sum served here. Chicken egg rolls taste like something from Gordon Food Service. Spicy dry pot wasn’t good, boxed leftover and ended up tossing out. Maybe their other items offered aren’t disappointing but unfortunately I won’t be back to try.

Google
CJHZ has become our favor spicy Sichuan fix spot. Everything here is authentic and flavorful, we tried just about everything and have not been disappointed. Besides spicy dishes they also have dim sum which is a serious plus now since Sunflower has closed its door. If you like real Chinese food this is the place.

Yelp
I've reviewed this mouth watering palace of goodness before, but I've been reminded that I'm "one review from recognition" for dim sum reviews, so here goes. I wonder what fame will be like? The dim sum here is ok. Not really good, but not bad. It's nothing special. Know why? Because dim sum is CANTONESE/ HONG KONG food. This restaurant is SZECHUAN food (and consistently the finest of that I've ever had). I hear the American Chinese food here is ok too. But seriously WHY? Go to a decades old place like Ding Ho that specializes in it and have yourself some wor su gai with white bread and butter! Fabulous! But this place does Szechuan like no where else. Not Cantonese. Not American Chinese. Szechuan. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Yelp
Had the kung pow tofu. Yup they made it with tofu instead of chicken for me. It was very tasty and since we were staying at the red roof at the corner the walk was only 3-5 minutes. Decently priced and the food and service was great!

Yelp
Authentic Szechuan in Ohio? I was a doubter. Chuan Jiang Hao Zi proved me wrong. Fish Fillet in Szechuan Green Pepper Broth - 5/5 A must try. Lightly floured whitefish in a Szechuan green peppercorn broth, garnished with Szechuan green peppercorns. Soft, tender fish in a numbing broth. Special Grilled Lamb - 5/5 Everything you want from a lamb dish. Nice spicy seasoning, soft tender lamb. Wonton Soup - 2/5 I'd skip this one. The broth had a bit of an unusual flavor and the dumplings did not taste fresh. Water Spinach - 4/5 Fresh, vegetal, and a great way to cool yourself down in between bites of spicy goodness. I'd also avoid any of the American Chinese food on offer here. One member of our dining party tried it and was not impressed. Stick to the Szechuan classics. Can't wait to come back and check more of the menu.

Yelp
Chuan Jiang Hao Zi continues to impress. This time we ordered their wonton in chill oil, their dry beef, hot pot, their fish fillet with green peppercorns, and there sorted, Chinese water, spinach. Everything was excellent. The fish fillet with green peppercorns had a nice kick to it, the beef hot pot had thinly cut cauliflower which was delicious. The dry pot was very good as well, and the water spinach was delicious as usual. The wontons were my least favorite but still pretty good. We will continue to be repeat customers here :).

Yelp
I just finished eating my takeout order of house fried rice from Chuan Jiang Hao Zi. I was really excited to try them since my fellow Yelpers have given them a 4.5 star average. Maybe fried rice isn't their strong point... but it was only okay. It tasted fine, but the rice was overcooked and too mushy for my liking. One order of this fried rice is $14 plus $1 online ordering convenience fee. For $15, I could get the same sized container full of meat with a side of rice at other Chinese restaurants. My fried rice had chicken, beef, and shrimp but they weren't particularly generous with the meats. So I don't think the value is good either. Maybe I'll get a chance to try their other dishes somewhere down the line, but best I can give them at this time is 3 stars.

Yelp
Great fresh food and reasonably priced. The green pepper soup is HUGE! So if you order it - prepare to share it with 2-3 people.

Yelp
In Columbus overnight for the state fair and decided to have a non-fair meal so Yelp recommended this restaurant. Super friendly staff and clean restaurant . The menu selection was excellent. Portions were huge and four of us split three entrees. Will be stopping by anytime we're in Columbus.
google avatar

Yelp
The food was amazing! I had the honey chicken and my husband had the Kung Po chicken. We split an order of potstickers. All of the food was great! The portions were generous. The restaurant was really clean. The servers were very attentive to our needs. There wasn't any loud music blasting over the room. This is an authentic Chinese restaurant and there are many things on the menu that I would never order but I will definitely come here again. I want to try more of their Americanized dishes.

Yelp
Beautiful decor and ambiance at Chuan Jiang Hao Zi, and the presentation of the dishes were nice. Unfortunately, the food itself didn't quite live up to our expectations. The wait staff were super friendly and we were greeted with a warm welcome upon entering, however neither one of us were wowed by the taste. One thing that was a bit odd was that they brought my husband's food out before mine, even though we ordered together. The dishes we ordered were decent, but nothing that particularly stood out. Maybe we just caught them on an off day? To their credit, they did accommodate my request to substitute tofu instead of chicken, which was great. However, the sesame tofu I ordered tasted more like hot and sour tofu instead, which was a bit of a letdown. If they can work on the food quality and consistency in service, I'd definitely consider coming back for the lovely atmosphere, presentation, and friendly staff.

Yelp
After reading a bunch of great reviews, I had high expectations for this place. I enjoyed all the dishes but wasn't overwhelmed by any of them. I would recommend trying the braised pork and the fish fillet with Szechuan green pepper broth. Skip out on the mapo tofu and pan-fried pork buns. The server was very knowledgeable and patient with our party of 7.

Yelp
We liked this place so much that when my friend from China was in town we showed him the menu and he got SO happy. We were all at a dog show at the fair grounds so we placed a LARGE takeout order for six people, planning to share everything... which is what we did. I want to start with my friend from China says this is one of the most authentic Chinese restaurants he has been to in the Mid West and would definitely order again from it.... High praise. Lol. What we ordered: Chive bun dim sum: four pieces. Each a great size. Shrimp was fresh and had a great texture. Probably one of our favorite things we ordered that night. If you like shrimp.... Get this for sure. Delicious. Egg rolls: come in sets of two. Very fresh. Pot stickers : steamed. No complaints. i didnt sample but there were no left overs so thats a good sign with this group! They must be good as they sometimes sell out of these. House fried rice. We got two orders of This for six people. We probably only needed one... the sizing is generous and they dont skimp on ingredients. We all were very pleasantly pleased. It had pork, beef, shrimp and maybe some chicken along with ample veggies. Delicious. Not Greasy Beef with broccoli. The beef was surprisingly tender and had that buttery melt in your mouth texture. I hate beef and I found this dish to be very good. I would even have eaten it if I was served it as it was quite good. And I dont usually voluntarily eat a meal containing beef. Lol. General tso chicken. Keep in mind this is an authentic chinese restaurants and gen tso is American food trying to be chinese. This was okay. It had big pieces of super fresh brocoli but the chicken didnt have that rich american brown sauce. It was more traditional and cooked into it. Sweet and sour chicken: another americanized dish. Not the greatest. By the time we got back to thebfairgrounds this was the only dish that was straight up cold. It needed to be coated in sweet and sour sauce which warm whichbit didnt get the opportunity to do. This was a dud. Disliked it strongly. Hometown braised pork: big chunks of braised pork with orka? I didnt have any but there wasnt hardly any left. They said it was good. Garlic eggplant: Show stealer. This was the winning dish. The eggplant is the asian style bright purple eggplant. It was so flavorful and not mushy. There wasnt any left. We all tried it and each loved it - this we would get multiple orders next time. Heck I am getting some either today or tomorrow, as I cant stop obsessing about it. My friend from China said that and the chive bun were his favs. I strongly recommend this place. This is the second trip in and both times it has been excellent, food fresh, nice sized portions and ready in a reasonable time. For all that food it was about 145 bucks (remember there was 6 adults who hadn't eaten all day, we ordered a lot) It was a lot of food and felt the pricing was appropriate actually- it was more on the good value side for the portion sizing. :) Le

Yelp
Our food didn't seem fresh at all. We ordered carry out so maybe dine in would be different? We liked our egg roll okay & if you eat pork or like green onion their potstickers had a nice flavor. The rice was mediocre & the chicken (orange & honey) was extremely dry. It was a plus that they gave us plenty of sauce & our order was done pretty fast on a Saturday night.

Yelp
OMG...this place is now the standard for Chinese food in CBus in my book. It is the most authentic Chinese food you will find in CBus. I have now been twice and have been blown away at the flavors and taste of the food. I have loved everything I have ordered so far. I also love how they offer authentic dishes you will not find at any other place in Columbus. Dining area is very clean. They have two areas: one for traditional family style dining and one for that is more of a traditional booth setting. They have a few TVs around. Service is amazing. Staff is very polite, pleasant, and attentive. Both times I have been I have been super impressed with the service and how quickly and accurately the food is prepared. I can't wait to return and try the many other entrees they offer.

Yelp
Lots of options on the menu! Including dim sum. Not typical for Szechuan cuisine but definitely makes the menu pretty varied for all kinds of people. I ordered calamari and dry pot spicy beef. Portions are large ! Worth it for the price. The calamari was fantastic! And the dry pot reminded me of the same seasoning in Manchurian chicken. It's got a nice kick but not that spicy. Lots of items to try on the menu for next time! I wanted to get tea but seems they have been sold out for a while. It's in the same building as Tous Les Jour but around the corner. Lots of parking. I'll be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Can't say enough as to just how good my meal has been! Fresh made and delicious. Had the calamari - light, crispy and tender. Main course was the spicy pork with garlic and it was great! You should eat here.

Yelp
Came here on a recommendation of my good CBus local buddy and it lived up to its recommendation and then some! The all day dim sum items is wonderful to have! I would've engaged in that had I not ordered a bunch of all day dim sum back in CLE on V-Day... Came here with my white BF who tragically does not like the Sichuan mala flavor profile but you know what, you never know what you end up discovering, so we ordered plenty--red chili oil wontons (only okay. The wontons were on the small side and no cilantro but the presentation was ON POINT), hand shredded chicken cold chili noodles with bean sprouts (I've ordered this at many different places and this has been the best version! Perfect width noodles with that chewiness and just a chili flavor with no mala...crunchy, smooth, cold, springiness, a melange of textures!), mapo tofu (I thought it was pretty good although some ground pork and peas would've completed it! BF couldn't handle this one but I thought it went so well with the rice!). The presentation of every dish was amazing. Prices were mostly expected, not overly high but not cheap either. Love the selection and authenticity of the Sichuan dishes. Taste was great and portions were pretty good. Service was very warm, friendly and speed of food coming out was FAST. We waited less than 5 minutes for our first dish to come out. Italian restaurants and American restaurants, take note!!! The location is great too because it's in this plaza of other shops...Tous les jour being the absolute draw of this place!!! Plenty of parking and the customers were a good mix of real Chinese people and adventurous white people and lots of mixed crowds! This one Chinese boy sat diagonally from us and ordered this gigantic stew, konqincai and a pork belly dish with a heaping bowl of rice...FOR ONE. What a baller and a feast he was having by himself. Props.

Yelp
Totally unexpected to find delicious and authentic Szechuan food in Columbus, Ohio. The place was immaculately clean, the services with quick, friendly and efficient. The portions were huge, but we needed to get a few dishes to share. One of my favorite things to eat is the Chongqing Chicken (spicy fried chicken) and this place hit the mark, the chicken was crispy and spicy. The been and broccoli was one of the best I've had and it did not taste like American fast Chinese food, which is usually what I expect. My husband loved the spicy wontons. And the mapo tofu was good, but was probably the least favorite out of everything we ordered. We had plenty of leftovers for lunch the next day and still didn't finish everything. All in all a great spot for some excellent Chinese food.

Yelp
Hello, fellow Yelper. If you have stumbled upon this review, please take it as your sign to visit this place ASAP! I ordered takeout from Chuan Jiang Hao Zi a few days ago and have not stopped thinking about it since. Truly some of the best Chinese food I have ever had. I believe their specialty is Szechuan cuisine. Do your tastebuds like to dance? Then order one of their Szechuan dishes featuring tingly Sichuan peppercorns and chili peppers (I recommend the chicken with green peppercorn if you like spice). The eggplant with garlic sauce was a real show stopper. I don't usually love eggplant but the eggplant was cooked to perfect, tender perfection with a garlic sauce I'd absolutely bathe in, if given the chance. We also tried the dumplings in chili oil and hot and sour soup. Both were great, but the eggplant and peppercorn chicken are both living rent free in my brain. I haven't dined in yet but cannot wait to get a group of people together so we can order family style and try even more menu items. I have been recommending this place to almost everyone I've encountered over the last few days-- and now I recommend that YOU, my friend, try it too! You will NOT be disappointed!

Yelp
All of my favorite Chinese restaurants have closed in recent years: Lee's, China Dynasty at Lane Avenue, Peking Dynasty on Fifth...sigh. Then, along comes this place! (I am uncertain how it's pronounced, but it means delicious food to us!) Greeted warmly upon arrival, and seated in a spacious dining room. One open area of tables; one area with booths. A pictorial menu in English and another for those who prefer more traditional, less Americanized fare. A strong array of appetizers and a vast selection of main courses. Everyone has different preferences, so recommendations are meaningless, but I love the vegetable noodle dishes and pot stickers, my wife loves the chicken and beef dishes. Lots of students from nearby Ohio State and many commuters and business folks eat here. Ample parking nearby in a large lot. And a liquor store next door if you're carrying out. Our advice: order enough to fill up here AND have take away for later home consumption.

Yelp
Did another takeaway for Chinese New Year. Amazing, as always! Got a bunch of our usual suspects (egg rolls, spicy wontons in chili oil, chicken with green peppercorn), but also tried a new one: shredded pork with garlic sauce. It is absolutely delicious and my new favorite!
google avatar

Julia G.

Yelp
So glad we stopped in! The portion sizes are huge, and the dim sum menu was so fun to order off of. Everything we had was absolutely delicious. The beef was super tender, the tofu was flavorful, and the cold noodles with chicken was addictive. The shrimp shumai were completely packed with shrimp, and the custard buns make a great dessert. Staff went out of their way to be friendly and helpful, they were super kind! I can't wait to come back here and I also can't wait to eat the leftovers later since I have lots.

Yelp
Ohhhhh yeaaaa this is my new favorite Szechuan place to go. The food was amazing. I could tell the ingredients were from China. The whole dining area is pretty good, well decorated. I really like the Mao Xue Wang and my wife loves the chicken pork belly soup. The service was very fast. Love it!
google avatar

Marie B.

Yelp
I've been here a few times and have been impressed each visit. Their gyoza are absolutely delicious, especially when combined with the dipping sauce they provide. I usually order the honey chicken which is a favorite of mine, but not many places offer it anymore. Theirs is pretty good, but is almost a little too light in color/flavor. That being said, it is still very delicious and fits the craving. I know they are more known for their traditional cuisine, but I just don't have the palette for it unfortunately. I would like to try their dim sum, though!

Yelp
I'm fluffin elated that Fortune's family restaurant and delicious recipes are back in business - just reincarnated. Same spot that their former long-stayed restaurant was, the strip plaza has been bulldozed and a three- or four-story apartment building has replaced it with the entire ground floor dedicated to retail. But these food spirits are still roaming their old stomping ground! CJHZ is nice inside. Spacious, a mix of table seating and booths. The menu still gives vibes of Fortune in the setup and descriptions (or lack of, in some cases). What really drew me in though is the all-day served dim sum here. The menu has several things - not too skimpy nor lengthy. The first time round, met a friend, we decided to share everything so we could try several things. We decided on, in no particular order: the honey chicken, shrimp shumai, hot pork (if I'm remembering correctly) wontons with chili oil, stringed beans, golden lava custard buns, and a tofu app dish (gotta find the name, give me a sec). Verdicts: - Pork wontons in chili oil were actually not as hot as I was assuming, and they left my out nice and warm, but still able to taste all flavors. Two thumbs up! - String beans were great. Freshly pan fried, still slightly crunchy; really liked the sauce - not spicy, just flavorful! - Shrimp Shumai were cooked well and overall good flavor. - The tofu app dish was interesting, but surprisingly good; the tofu was soft, but the pan frying kept the edges trusty; the shrimp was deep fried before places on top; and the brown sauce worked with the proteins. This dish - my first of the kind - was quite good. I'd recommend you give it a try, S it's something I don't recall seeing on other Chinese menus around town. - The Honey Chicken was fantastic! The chicken deep fried to perfection, hot, tender and manageable-sized pieces of chicken; the honey sauce was actually really, really good: Not overly sweet, and you could definitely still taste the chicken (no, not just frying oil). Highly recommend this dish! - Golden Lava Custard Buns were decent, but would have been even better with more true mango puree inside them. Also, the paste was rather gritty, and while it wasn't a bad texture on my tongue, more juicy would have been even better, imo. I'll probably forgo these and go with bubble tea when I want something sweet. I've been back since this first stop, and will continue. There's so much I still want to try. Heads up: The times I've been, there's always been some dishes and bubble teas that are crossed out; I'm sure it's based on product availability and customer preferences, so keep that in mind if you're planning a visit - come with an open mind/options. Prices, quality, and quantity all match well.

Yelp
I was a fan of Fortune in their previous incarnations, and it was sorely missed by many, so I was eager to try this. Was nearby a couple of times today and decided to stop in. Even if I hadn't been a fan before, this experience would have turned me into one. It's in a strip under the City apartments, but inside it is bright and airy, and classy- modern but traditional, if that makes sense. Not old-school, like the few remaining classic Chinese-American places in town. The atmosphere and menu are more up to date and authentic. You can get the things you remember, but also many interesting and unusual dishes. I came in intending to have a lunch special, but was tempted by so much more. I wanted several things, and the server walked me through some options. I went with the lamb- it doesn't say cumin lamb, but that's what it is. A huge mound of tender, flavorful beastie, with sauteed onions and a few other veggies, but mostly a lot of meat. No bones. A little spicy, and just heavily spiced. Yum. I got it with fried rice, good but nothing unusual. I also tried the chive-shrimp dumplings. Excellent. Someone mentioned the dim sum seeming previously-frozen, but these were not. Fresh, nicely crafted, big dumplings that held together and tasted amazing. Subtle compared to the lamb, so a nice counterpoint. I didn't need them- by the time I finished them and had more lamb, I didn't have quite enough to take home so I cleaned my plate, but was overstuffed. So good though. Service was excellent. Prices are reasonable for the quality and quantity. Plenty more to try from the menu; as the server said "try that next time!"

Yelp
If you're craving spicy Szechuan food, this is THE place in Columbus. A little bit pricier than typical Chinese restaurants and the decor is modern. Service is hit or miss depending on which waitstaff you get. You go here basically to taze your taste buds. We had 3 appetizers: spicy wonton, salt & spicy squid & fried pork bun. Portions were good except for the 4 smallish buns. We also ordered 3 entrees: spicy fish, dry hot pot & mapo tofu. Portion size & taste were good for fish & tofu dishes. My tongue is still tingling. The dry hot pot was smallish & the flavors were a bit off-putting such that it's not one to order.

Yelp
I am super excited to try this "new" Chinese restaurant, Chuan Jiang Hao Zi, that recently opened up around the OSU area. The space is sectioned with both booth seating and some large round table for large group. I really like their hard cover menu design, with food pictured and listed with both English and Chinese. Beside the regular menu, dim sum menu and the bubble tea drink menu come on the side. My favorite would be the Eggplant with Garlic Sauce and the Spicy Cauliflower in Dry Pot. I love everything eggplant and this one with no exception. The garlic sauce just evenly coated on each piece of the eggplant with a hint of smoky flavor from the "wok hei". Within the Spicy Cauliflower in Dry Pot, the cauliflower cooked perfectly with a slight crunchiness remain. It also included some thinly sliced deep fried potato and pork, which pair well in the dry pot. We didn't specify on the spicy level and it turn out to be mild - level 1 for me. If you look for less/more heat, make sure to ask. Portion size is definitely generous and you may head home with some leftover.

Yelp
Definitely my new go to carry out for Chinese Food. Everything was absolutely delicious and so fresh. The general tso's was so flavorful and honestly the best spice level I've had in a long time. The crab Rangoon was a little under fried but by the time I got around to even trying them I put them in the fridge for leftovers and they air fried the next day perfectly. There is a dining room which I didn't realize and it would be a nice place to eat in. The staff there was so kind as a walked in and wanted to order (I would recommend ordering ahead). They did however graciously take my order and had the food out in no time. 10/10 will be going back and trying more.

Yelp
Extremely reliable Asian takeout. The sesame balls and pork shumai were standouts among usual takeout fare (chicken lo mein, fried rice, sesame chicken).

Yelp
First impression was very positive. The restaurant is bright, open and very clean. The door opens to an area of large round tables. Past that is the hostess stand where we were treated and taken to our seats. We were seated in a booth. The seats were firm yet cushioned. Very comfy. Service was speedy and very friendly! And the food was delicious! Hubs had General Tsos Chicken. The fried chunks of white meat chicken were tender and covered in a mildly spicy spicy / sweet brown sauce, served with broccoli. Hubs felt it was comparable to other restaurants and the portion was adequate with the steamed rice as seen im the photo. Fried rice was also an option. The egg roll was "fair". He rates the restaurant a 3 I had a different experience - I ordered chicken with string beans and thought it was EXCELLENT. Mine was cooked in a brown sauce that was not poured over the food but was present on the plate. The chicken was stir fried but not breaded. The mala beans had some green pepper strips, and green onion. The meal was flavorful and plentiful. The kitchen is behind curtains. I can hear the food stir frying in woks. The boths were back to back on both sides of an isle. The customers were very eclectic, college students, a group of girl friends, colleagues, couples. All chatting. The noise level is my only complaint. Between the kitchen, Muzak and chatter from the other diners; it is noisy here. The menu featured dimsum, Americanized favorites and exotic options like tripe, fish, pigs feet and pig intestines. Many of the dishes were pictured. We though the lunch prices were excellent and the dinner entrees appeared to be only $4-5 more per entree I will return! This restaurant was recommended on the radio as an option for Junan Lion currently closed during repairs from a kitchen fire. Excellent recommendation!

Yelp
I came for lunch with Mike G. We were curious, since we are former fans of Fortune. This new location is in the updated shopping center which is more of a residental area, and faces Ackerman. The space is lovely, with booths, and pretty light fixtures. We shared the spring roll appetizer, since there are 2 of them. It was just okay. I got the Walnut Chicken with veggies and fried rice. It was all really good. I'll surely return for try more dishes. Tip: they weren't yet able to offer beer or wine. Coming soon.

Yelp
The owner of this restaurant owned Fortune Chinese restaurant that was located in the same area. He's since retired but owns the establishment. I met a friend for lunch and we had a great experience. We ordered from the Dim Sum menu and had a variety of items. There's a lunch and dinner menu as well. Everything was delicious and service was excellent. Looking for to returning soon!

Yelp
Two words: Ma La. After the waitress politely corrected this gweilo's pronunciation (it's totally one word), it was recommended I try the green peppercorn chicken and deep fried chicken with chili. Both dishes were amazing. I love spicy food and this place did not disappoint. Looking forward to trying more of the traditional Szechwan dishes!

Yelp
They offer these menu options: Dim Sum Authentic Chinese American Chinese Lunch Special (Average ~$10) Dinner (Average ~$14 - $17) Chuan Jiang Hao Zi just opened their doors, and I can tell you that it's very good. This University District restaurant is a bit of a successor to the old nearby Fortune restaurant that closed years ago. Why do I say that? Well, it's the same owner, chef, and recipes but in a different location with a new look and feel. I went with my old Fortune standard, Kung Pao Chicken, and Hot And Sour Soup. My dining partner, Anna H, got the Honey Chicken and Egg Drop Soup. We both commented on how great the food was and how it tasted exactly as it did years ago. We also shared a vegetable spring roll appetizer, which was pleasantly crispy but also a little greasy and bland. We got a very good first impression. I'm sure we'll be back. 5 stars And Let's Give You Something Else To Chew On: * The restaurant is behind Canes and faces Ackerman, not Olentangy. * The food comes out lightning fast. I mean, our soup, appetizer, and meal all hit the table within 5 minutes of each other. If you're not in a hurry, say so. * Their liquor license is pending, so you're looking at maybe February 2024 before alcohol is available. * No fortune cookies.

Yelp
The food was AMAZING. I love dim sum so when I saw how stuffed the shumi were here, I knew this place would be a 5/5 in my book. The service was very fast and not busy instead at all. I went on a Saturday around noon and was immediately seated. The ambiance is clean and comfortable. I 100% recommend the water spinach dish; It is garlicky and delicious. The price of the water spinach was skeptical at first since it was $15 but the portion made it SO worth it. There was not a single piece of food left on our plates. Highly recommend establishment.

Yelp
New player in the neighborhood but a familiar face. If you remember FORTUNE, which was in the old center at the corner of Olentangy and Ackerman for many years, this restaurant has the same owner and many of the same servers. Menu is mixed with traditional Chinese American dishes and what seems to be more traditional and somewhat exotic dishes. Potstickers, lo mein, mala string beans, and jasmine rice were all prepared perfectly. As were our mains. We stuck to the more traditional dishes. The interior is brand new. I think they should adjust the lighting at dinner, it's way too harsh. Our server was not particularly helpful on the menu, but now that we are customers, we will be more aggressive about learning the menu. At our sitting the restaurant had been open for one week. Good luck! No beer, wine, or spirits. I meant to ask about BYO, but forgot.

Yelp
They've got a lot of classic Asian dishes yet some very unique ones as well. The establishment appears exceptionally clean with a cozy interior. Everything tastes scratch made and is cooked to order. Great customer service as well! We'll be back to try some of their other unique offerings.

Yelp
Clean establishment with super flavorful, delicious Chinese food. Great portion sizes too, one entree (ranging from $12-$17) could easily be turned into 2-3 meals. We had an online order placed which was packaged up nicely and ready right on time. Definitely recommend this place!

Yelp
What an unexpected gem! The vibe is lively and friendly with warm welcomes from everyone on staff. It very bright, open and clean as soon as you walk in. We initially came for the dim sum but couldn't resist dabbling outside the lines and returning many more times! The menu is impressive with an extensive selection of traditional dishes, a lengthy offering of total American Chinese dishes and lots of yummy dim sum options to choose from. The dishes are offered in large family style portions and bright to you raffle with plates for sharing. The garlicky green beans were incredible and the soup dumplings were a delight! We can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Pros: Ample parking Large dining space Lots of authentic dishes; things you won't find at many places, like organ meats and pigs feet String beans were perfectly done Loved the Salt and Pepper Shrimp Cons: Service was only average Dim sum is nothing special - it likely comes in frozen and steamed, but it didn't taste that great Pro tip: Skip the dim sum but order the authentic dishes and get a boba drink while you're at it

Yelp
My daughter and I went here for lunch- they have a menu of traditional Chinese lunch entrees that come with soup but we decided on Dim Sum which is better with 2-3 people to get variety. We had scallion pancakes, delicious, shrimp shumai, very delicious, and our favorite was stuffed eggplant. It is stuffed with shrimp! The sauce was amazing. Our least favorite dish was pork spareribs. They were steamed 1 1/2" bones with minute pieces of meat on them- they were difficult to eat and not very tasty. The bill for lunch was only $28.00 total and we were stuffed! We're already to go back and discussed what we wanted to order next time, sorry for no pictures but we were hungry and busy catching up. Next time I'll take pix

Yelp
Second try of Chuan Jiang Hao Zi. Brought my mother here mainly for the dim sum. The menu is mostly Szechuan and too spicy for her. Went with Shu Mai, Har Gow, fried pork dumplings, chive dumpling, bean curd roll with pork. Shu Mai and Har Gow were disappointing. Shu Mai has too much pork filling and not much else....just one big tough meatball with no (or very little) water chestnut crunch in it. Had to dip it in dipping sauce just to eat it. Har Gow is the strange one. Very overcooked shrimp filling and I'm not sure about the flavor. It tastes frozen. The rest of the dim sum was ok but really disappointed that all of the steamed rice noodles dishes with any meats along with rice congee are off the menu. Got the salt and pepper shrimp and bok toy with mushrooms. Both were good (you can't really screw up bok toy with mushrooms). My family noticed that server was grumpy and didn't seem to want to be there. No politeness, just "what do you want??" Nothing special here. I'm still in search of a great shredded pork in garlic sauce with shredded bamboo and celery slivers for added crunch to the dish. Just doesn't seem to exist in Columbus.

Yelp
I visited the restaurant on a Friday after seeing a review. Szechuan Chinese sounded great to me, just be aware there are few non-spicy options aside from the dim sum. They were quite busy, and our table was right next to where they call people over to be seated. Made it a little hectic with people constantly walking by. There also didn't seem to be a single server; we had three different people come to take our order as we perused the menu. Be aware that not everyone's English is on the same level. The inside is bright, and in different sections. There was a very nice menu with pictures of the dishes, a page for alcoholic beverages, and a plain single sheet for the dim sum. We did order dim sum: soup dumplings and egg rolls. Both were delicious! Probably the best egg rolls I've had in Columbus, and my SO commented that she just wanted a bowl of the soup inside the dumplings, which I couldn't agree more. I would like to try more items from the dim sum menu in the future. I didn't realize that the entrees were going to come family size. It was a pleasant surprise, but I would have only ordered a single dish rather than two. My default dishes to try are general tso chicken and pork fried rice, but I wanted to get some other things. I ordered the mapo tofu, which unfortunately did not come with ground pork, and the deep fried chicken and peppers. She got the honey chicken. She seemed to enjoy it quite a bit, I did taste a piece, but it was too sweet for me. The mapo tofu was great, just so tasty, she even tried it and liked it. I did ask for it extra spicy. Same with the chicken and peppers. It was a lot more dry peppers than I expected, so I did kind of dig around that, but I really liked the taste of the chicken and the occasional bits of sliced garlic that I would find. There was plenty for leftovers even after eating until stuffed. I'd say the service was pretty good. For a busy night, they kept the water filled and brought more rice as needed. Our food also came out pretty quickly, which was nice. I'm looking forward to going back, soon!

Yelp
It's hard to get me excited about foods these days with menus across the city serving the same few items over and over again with little flavor to even boast about. But let me tell you, Chuan Jiang Hao Zi is impressive. From their dining menu, to the extensive tea menu, and the dim sum menu, I was blown away by all the different flavor profiles that could be tried. And I loved it all.

Yelp
This place is ridiculously good. I waited to review it after three carryout visits to make sure that the delectable food is consistent. (I also look forward to dining in, but haven't yet had a chance--the ambiance is very nice). I wish I could direct you to one particular dish, but that's a tough assignment--all of them are spectacular. Hot and sour soup, spicy wontons, honey chicken, fried rice . . . hitting it on all points. Plus the folks who greeted me were so nice and friendly. Get there, get it. You won't regret it.

Yelp
Very authentic Chinese foods!!! Absolutely deserve 10 stars!! My group ordered about 10 dishes and they were all delicious. My favorite is the cold pork slices. It's rolled with Cucumber slice and chili oil sauce is poured on top, refreshing and also savory. If I get to come back, I probably will bring a big group to order a lot and try variety of their menu!

Yelp
Was starting to feel jelly with everybody going to this place. But I also had a full day of NFL on television to watch. Takeaway to the rescue. Went with the two things I almost always ordered when they were in Olentangy plaza years ago. Ma Po Tofu and hot sour soup. Both were exactly as remembered and I was happy as can be to again enjoy what is (still) one of the best hot sour soups in town. Yay! Also tried their Spicy Aorta entree. Not much to it other than jalapeño celery and green onion, the aorta itself is a flavorless mashup of abalone and tendon textures. I'd get it again but as a side or app with other stuff.

Yelp
The sesame balls are incredible and the women working are also so friendly and nice. I usually pick up on my work lunch and they are always on time and the order is always correct
