The food was pretty good. Honestly, it's the most affordable out of their line of restaurants. They charge $1.10 per skewer so you can visit all the self-serve stations for all the different types of skewers they have. There is a charcoal grill at each table with a range that hovers over it so it never gets smoky when grilling. These are NOT the self turning ones like at T-kebab. You have to manually cook your own skewers, but the skewers are assembled to cook quickly. We had everything from shrimp, abalone, scallops, chicken wings, corn, mushrooms, and different cuts of wagyu, wagyu tongue.
At the end of the meal, the waiter/waitress will count up all of your skewers. Some are worth 2 skewers like the abalone and chicken wing, but that's fine.
For a party of 7 adults, we went through 96 skewers, 3 bowls of rice, and a beer tower! They do have a lots of other seasonings on the side that you can season your skewers with, but I found all of the skewers well seasoned and marinated.
The overall cost was about $212 (tax and tip included) so that is a steal!
I understand why there is a wait for this place. I showed up at 4:20pm and was first in line and they decided to open earlier at 4:45pm to cater to line that formed before their usual opening time of 5pm.
This place is going for a campy, outside street food setting vibe so all of the tables and foldable chairs are lower, but it adds to the fun. I don't camp, but glamp and am all for visiting Chubby Skewers again.
I've been to Chubby Cattle and Mikiya on multiple occasions, so this will be added into my rotation. I do want to visit Niku X down the road but my wallet needs to heal from visiting iWagyu and Yakiya recently.
I found out that they are opening a Chubby Skewers in the SGV soon! Also I like this random fact - they have vomit bags in their restrooms! LOl they keep it real since they open until 3am (the post party crowds).
