The 34 Best Restaurants in Madrid, Spain | Eater

"Right in the heart of the Literary Quarter, Chuka is hands down the city’s most successful ramen bar. American chef John Husby, who spent time at Momofuku in New York, knows how to please crowds with an umami-packed menu, which includes seasonal and daily additions. Start with some baos, which come stuffed with Korean fried chicken, soft shell crab, and pork belly. Then move on to the three types of ramen, which change throughout the year and always include a brothless option. Don’t forget to try the superb eggplant mapo, “fake” veal nigiri (served on bread instead of rice), and the pluma ibérica char siu. Book in advance; walk-ins are welcome but usually don’t get lucky with a seat. Know before you go: Vegetarian options are available for the baos and ramen." - Paula Móvil

Chuka Ramen Bar - Review - Barrio de las Letras - Madrid - The Infatuation

"Chuka is one of our favorite Asian restaurants in Madrid. The Asian menu includes creative mashups like chicken tikka masala gyoza and cochinita pibil bao buns. It’s one of the few places in the city where you can sit down to a great bowl of ramen, which is a must-order here." - Cristina Shipe

Google
Decided to have ramen for a change of taste in Spain, came across this ramen bar and we were quite satisfied with the food! The ramen broth was good although it can be more flavourful. The shrimp dumplings were nice and I liked the Korean fried chicken Bao too!

Google
Best ramen I’ve ever had Everything is so good Would recommend the shrimp and crab baos The gyozas and the wonton For ramen we had the tantanmen and it was amazing

Google
I can only say “ WOW “ I loved my experience at this establishment. I got seated at the bar as I was solo and I could look directly into the kitchen which was interesting as you can see the chefs in action. The food was outstanding! I tried the shrimp dumplings which were delicious from filling to topping and sauce. Furthermore, the pork ramen was outstanding! It was generously topped and contained plenty of broth which made it a complete meal without the need of any dessert as I was stuffed. Service was on point, they served me with a complimentary appetiser and glass of water. They even asked me if I wanted a shirt protector as it’s hard to not get any food on you when eating ramen ;) I would have liked to try the fried donut but was just too full. Will come back for that next time. Thanks

Google
What a delicious restaurant! The venue is great, in perfect Japanese atmosphere The food is absolutely delicious. We tried all dishes and they are all fantastic. Service is absolutely P E R F E C T, the waitress with curly hair is fantastic and provides a service above any expectation. Prices are also good I will surely come back!!

Had a solo meal here and sat at the bar, couldn’t be more satisfied of the meal. I had a beef gyoza and a ramen 🍜 the chashu was beautifully cooked and there was a bit of charred taste to it. Totally my thing. You might think I’m joking but it is easily the best ramen and gyoza I’ve had even better than some in Japan! Plus they give some crackers and dip to start with. I was so full and satisfied ☺️🐷 also not to mention, the staff speaks good English and makes recommendations and you can definitely trust. I just wish I have more space to have the baos and desserts because they seriously look good! 😍😍

Google
The experience at this place was exceptional, from the service to the food. All the entries were delicious. We ordered two baos: one with crab and the other with Korean chicken, both highly recommended. They come in generous portions, so be prepared. The gyozas were very nice, with a touch of ginger in their filling. The star of the meal was the langostine taco – an awesome dish. Everything comes separately, and you have to assemble it at the table. We also tried the tan tan ramen; the ramen itself was good, but the broth was a bit too concentrated and salty for my taste. Other than that, I have no complaints. Please order the mochi donut, if you like citric dessert this is for you!! Make sure to make a reservation in advance, as it can be busy. Overall, I would highly recommend it

Google
This is one of the best restaurants! I was lucky to get a table without reservations. I ordered a Korean fried chicken bao and tonkostu ramen. Bao was soo goood, a lot of times it tastes nothing like Korean chicken but it was authentic, crispy chicken bao.. Ramen was also good too! Noodles can be a bit improved but still really tasty. Yuzu shochu cocktails was 🤩👅👍😝 I will go back to this restaurant everytime I visit Madrid.. highly recommend!!! ✨✨✨✨

Google
As someone who’s favourite all time dish is ramen, I have to say that the ramen here was great, incredibly rich (I would personally suggest sharing a ramen between two with 2 appetisers). I would say this place is in my top ramen restaurants in Madrid but not my #1. We had 2 bowls of ramen, 1 chicken bao and that was really more than enough for 2 people. I had the tonkotsu, and if you know tonkotsu, it should satisfy your craving (broth too rich for me and I felt there might have been something missing). Service was great and we got a nice table in the back, having booked quite ahead! They also gave us a small appetiser as soon as we arrived which I appreciated ☺️ It is on the pricer side, so I would recommend it to friends who are actual ramen fans. Give it a go if you enjoy ramen! 🍜

Yelp
Unbelievable restaurant with an incredible chef and impecable service. We had the Korean chicken bao bun, shrimp dumplings, shrimp taco and the spicy Raman. All the flavors were intricate and delicious. We are only in Madrid for 3 nights and said we were only going to eat Spanish food and will be back. Highly recommend! Lorena is one of the owners and she was an incredible host.

Yelp
Probably the best ramen you will find in Spain! The soft shell crab bao and shiitake bao were very nice. I ordered hakata ramen. The broth was milky in consistency and very hearty. Ajutsuke ramen egg was well-marinated with a runny, jammy yolk. The ramen bowl came with two very thick pieces of pork belly chashu, which were perfectly seared and flavorful. The dessert was mochi donut with citrus ice cream on top. The mochi donut was crisp on the outside, soft inside and chewy. Highly recommend! I definitely want to try the tantanmen (based on Chinese dan dan mian) next time if I have the chance.

Yelp
Japanese Ramen spot in Madrid? Well why not.. was seated right away by the manager and happy she spoke English. Not a lot of people speak English in Madrid from my observation. As always service was quick and portions were enough for four. Flavors of the bao's were definitely uberlicous and the ramen was fantastic. You just needed to be there.

Yelp
This is a hot little place so be sure to have a reservation if you want a chance of dining here ( while there are a few seats at the bar which a solo diner of couple might be able to snag, we saw several small groups get turned away). Menu consists of about 5-6 bao and 3 types of ramen. On to ordering... we should have stuck with the bao which were fantastic. instead, we ordered a bao each and then each a bowl of ramen and that was just waaay too much food. The chicken bao was the standout of the meal- highly recommend that one. Ramen was good but frankly I was so full from the bao that couldn't really enjoy it. Overall, a good meal. Name of the restaurant is intriguing to me. Is it a reference to the traditional Madrid outfits? Or the word in Spanish that means superior to others? So curious....

Yelp
This ramen is PHENOM and the restaurant is cute and intimate and cozy!! We found Chuka because we were sick of tapas and wanted a change, but there were no reservations left for the night. We arrived ~15 minutes before opening and there were already a handful of guests waiting for Chuka to open to. They only have a ~8 seats for walk ins and someone pushed in front of our party of 4, so we decided just to wait for the entire first round of guests to finish so we could still eat here. They have a glass window between the entry and the kitchen so we were able to watch the chefs prep all the food which was fun. It took about an hour and a half for the bar seating to turn, but it was worth it! You get a little snack as a starter, and then our group chose the gyoza (amazing), cauliflower (veggies are so hard to find in spain but these are so flavorful too! I think we were the only people to get it the entire time we were there but I loved it), and I got the tonkotsu ramen. The broth is SO rich in flavor but light so you don't feel gross and greasy, and the noodles are phenom. It comes with a really big portion of chashu so I didn't end up finishing it, but it was great too. Chuka is well deserving of their michelin accolade and well worth a meal if you have time to try it! Coming from California we have high ramen standards, but this was amazing.

Yelp
WOW. So I came here while visiting Madrid since my sister was studying abroad here. She said that this was the best ramen that she ever had. My family and I were impressed. We made reservations as my sister said that the wait can get long as the restaurant is a bit small. For food, we got the tiger shrimp and fried chicken bao buns for an appetizer and they did not disappoint. Literally I think it was one of the best bao buns I've ever had. Definitely go for the fried chicken ones, the piece of meat is huge! I got the Shoyu Ramen and the pork that came in it was amazing, it was crispy yet soft at the same time and the broth was delicious. I got to try the miso ramen; but did not think the broth was as good as the Shoyu one. ALL IN ALL, I agreed with my sister, definitely one of the best ramen places I've been to. It is however a bit pricey - but definitely worth the price and quality.

Yelp
Wow, this place is amazing. I would be a regular if I lived in Madrid, which sadly I don't :( Their baos are ON POINT, but they do change! So don't get too attached to what you see on yelp as they may have different ones when you go. Pan fried pig ear bao - the reason for 5 star review. Literally not a more perfect bao was made. Soft and fluffy bao, with flavorful and crispy pig ear that is stuffed up nice and fat (no skimping here folks!). They seem expensive at 9 euro, but they're actually quite a large size so worth it! Ramen hiyashi - 4/5. dry soupless ramen. Noodles and flavor were all on point. Loved all the toppings except I do think the cashews were too copious and also didn't blend as well with the bowl since it was quite sweet, like candied cashews. Got the soju sour cocktail which was fantastic.

Yelp
Far too salty ramen and rather expensive. There are three styles of ramen to choose from. I got the dipping style ramen where the broth is separate and the noodles are in a bowl with a few cubes of marinated pork, half of a soy egg, woodear and a handful of mixed greens marinated in a vinaigrette. The broth has a gravy consistency that coats the noodles (and your tongue) and is too salty that you can't eat it. Since the pork is already covered in sauce it pools to the bottom of the bowl and already made the noodles salty to begin with. The restaurant itself is busy and is well decorated. The staff seem fairly nice though. Just based on the quality of the food I would probably would skip this place.

Yelp
When the hubs said that he was taking me to Spain, I fell in love with him all over again. When he told me he was taking me to a Michelin recommended RAMEN place in Madrid, I professed to him that he was, indeed, my soulmate. Let me start by saying this: There are no bells and whistles to this restaurant. There's nothing glam about it; there are no special visuals, shows, elaborate presentations... just really, really, REALLY good food. The hubs made a reservation for the two of us there, and we were told that on most nights, you need a reservation or risk quite the wait. When you sit down, the bring you some rice chips and edamame hummus. The hubs isn't CRAZY about either, but we nearly wiped the plate clean. We ordered the gyozas and a steam bun with cochinita pibil to share, the hubs had the Shio ramen, and I had the Tori Paitan. The gyozas weren't all that special, but the steam bun was amazing. The cochinita pibil was tender and very well seasoned, and the bun was pillow-y soft. The hubs enjoyed his ramen, and I LOVED mine. The broth was deep and rich, the pork belly was amazingly tender and melted in my mouth, and every other ingredient in that bowl was well utilized for both texture and taste. If I wasn't so full, I would have licked the bowl.

Rebecca E.

Yelp
Fun Atmosphere When you are ready for a break from tapas, this is the place to go. The bao buns are delicious and the spicy ramen (which two of us shared) was very good, although not very spicy. We also had the eggplant which was very good. This is an adorable restaurant with a young crowd and friendly and helpful servers. It was a fun evening. Must reserve in advance.

Yelp
Pro: Appointment system, good thick base for the ramen, staff that can actually speak proper English to the tourist. Con: Gyoza mix for isn't even, long wait We stayed down the alley, saw this place by chance and decided to drop in for a bite. We got turned away at 8:30 PM, but got a reservation for 9:45PM. The place was super busy, finally got seated at 10:10PM. The co-owner is from OC, so it's smooth sailing for questions and details. The buns have a lot of meat, a lot more then the usual Taiwanese buns, it's great value for the price. Pork gyoza's peanut was not properly mixed, thus some gyoza had too heavy of peanut crunch and favor while some didn't have any affect. The ramen, some of the best we ever had in comparison in Japan, Taiwan, and the States. The broth is cooked in small batch, drained right before serving, you can see all the action at the glass window. Menu - was told it was from an ex NYC Mamafuku chef's personal choice, the other co-owner of the restaurant. I would highly recommend this place if you are in Madrid.

Yelp
I love the concept and the staff! We walked into this place late into the night when their kitchen was closing but the owner welcomed us at the bar and wow did we have FOMO on the food. It looked amazing and the staff was very friendly (english speaking and knowledgable about area). It is very quaint and traditional style which we loved. I would highly recommend this place to any travelers in madrid and make sure you try the food because we showed up too late but the drinks were perfect!

Yelp
Cozy space with amazingly good, inventive food. The mushroom bao and fried chicken bao were terrific and the special bao, pastrami, was to die for !! Buns were light and not chewy and the fried chicken was the perfect crunchiness. We also had the cauliflower, generous portion, also yummy. Last but not least, the ramen (the non traditional one). It was also excellent! Owner and staff were very friendly and made us feel welcome even as non-natives. We were lucky to get a seat without reservations so I strongly suggest calling in advance. Can't recommend enough !

Yelp
The lady was craving ramen when we got to Spain. I thought it would be a horrible idea....and I was right. Food: The ramen lacked a hearty soup. The focus appear to be on their meat. The noodles were pretty decent. The Pork slice we got was really really really good. Outside of that everything else made me say wtf. Service: Decent service. We didn't have a reservation but we got seating anyway though there was a time limit. Environment: Feels like a ramen joint where you'd drink a boat load of alcohol. Price: We paid equivalent to $17 usd for a bowl of ramen. That is without a doubt the most expensive bowl of ramen I've ever had! Food: 2 Service: 4 Environment: 4 Price: 1

Yelp
Pros: -Yummy dumplings -Cool names of drinks -Hip spot close to Cardamomo Flamenco -Rooster sauce at every table Cons: -High prices -Small portions -Way too much salt in Ramen

Yelp
The hype is real-- my only regret is that I came alone so that I couldn't try more food. I arrived right when they were open and snagged a seat at the bar, but it seems like reservations are everything. Had a bao bun and the tonkotsyu -- huge portions and flavor! Staff was attentive, vibe was great

Yelp
About the closest I've ever been to eating in a Michelin starred restaurant. Quality, atmosphere, and flair. Above and beyond any ramen restaurant I tried in Madrid. And that Bao. Chuka is a small restaurant in a quiet street in Madrid. The hours are strange, but typically Spanish. Call ahead to make a reservation or risk waiting at least an hour or more. Order the ramen and the bao buns. Try the pork. Eat but savor. Do it all. Splurge on that Ichiban beer, forget that tasteless Mahou. If you're at Chuka, you might as well indulge. It is a restaurant for luxurious eating, yet still on a budget. The dishes are large enough to satisfy an American appetite, but small enough to enjoy multiple dishes. Speak to the owner who clearly takes pride in her work. She'll speak to you in English or flawless Spanish. Amazing. I came away amazed. Come to Chuka ready to eat. I did. In the words of the owner after I finished, "Asi se come en Chuka!"

Yelp
The ambience here was great! Service was impeccable! However, I'm originally from Los Angeles so I've tasted some really great ramen. The quality was great but the execution just wasn't there. The broth just wasn't right - too thick; almost creamy. And the noodles were off - had no "spring" so to say but rather absorbed so much off the broth that it became soggy. Everything else was so great; I just really wanted the food to be just as amazing. I would definitely recommend making a reservation. Place is typically booked anytime after 9. Overall, great service and great atmosphere.
google avatar

Annabelle L.

Yelp
Another over-hyped resto. The restaurante seems to only focus on their meat - no joke the pork was really good. Yet other than that, everything is s**t. The soup was fat and salty, ruining the whole bowl of ramen. Last but not least this might be the most expensive ramen I'd ever tried in my life - $17 USD LMFAO I'm crying bye
google avatar

Kathleen S.

Yelp
One of my favorite ramen spots in all of Spain (and my mom's favorite of all time). My mom and I had a phenomenal experience here. The broth runs on the thick and flavorful side and noodles are done right. Staff was friendly. Would highly recommend this restaurant!
google avatar

Jessica T.

Yelp
This is not a traditional ramen place. Instead, they have taken some popular Asian items, gyoza, bao and ramen, and added their own twist to them. To me, it works very well. I recommend focusing on bao and ramen personally as the gyoza were less unique (the 2 we tried) and just not as good. You can make a reservation online!
google avatar

Yelp
1. If you havent been here, make sure you go. This place is a hidden gem. 2. This place has the best housemade gyoza that is filled up all the way with meat. Then the ramen is probably the best it will ever be in Madrid. I have tried a couple other places. Its either the ramen noodles are good and the soup is soooo salty or bland, or the soup is amazing and the noodles are hard or sticking all together with a weird texture. Here i am glad to say it has good noodles and a decent soup too. 3. The quality of food here is obviously top notch. It really is one of the nicest restaurants i have been to, and im talking price, interior, and taste wise. Seriously though the mood is amazing. Its clear they're a popular and busy business so just keep that in mind when you go. If you can, making a reservation will be a very good idea. Play it safe, trust me. I saw a ton of people walk in and walk out due to the fully booked night. To be fair they usually do leave a couple tables opened for walkins it was just that there was a group there that night. The kind front lady greeted me and spoke perfect english. She was kind enough to ask for permission for me to eat at the bar due to the lack of tables. 4. Great service. The price isnt cheap but for the ambience, food quality, and service, i didnt feel cheated one bit.

Yelp
Wonderful restaurant. I ordered the ramen, but the real star was the bao buns. Both pulled pork and fried chicken bao buns where savory and mouthwatering. The drinks are a little pricey; however, they are quite large and absolutely delightful. To top it off- best staff I've experienced in Madrid! All the servers were extremely friendly and attentive. Tip- make a reservation, it will book up on a weekend evening
google avatar

Mai S.

Yelp
Very Delicious food. Make a reservation before hand. We just showed up without a reservation bc its close to our hotel. They asked if we had made a reservation we said no. The only place they could seat us was at the bar right beside the cashier. Not a lot of room for 2 people. Another 2 guys showed up and were seated at the same bar. They really had to squeeze in. The food was super good. It's not authentic Japanese tho if thats what you're hoping for. We ordered fried chicken wings with curry sauce as an appetizer. I could not get enough of the wings!!!!! The curry sauce was the bomb. Hands down. I could have those all day everyday !!!

Chris K.

Yelp
We came here in January of 2019. We had two of the Baos, which were delicious and very big (recommend to share one or two of them) and my significant other and I both got the traditional Tokyo Ramen. The only reason this was not rated a 5/5 is I would have preferred the ramen have a little more spice to it (or at least have the option of a spicy one), but all in all the service was excellent, atmosphere great and food very good! We would certainly come back.
google avatar

Ria R.

Yelp
The best meal I had in Madrid by far. The funny thing is that it is owned by a chef who studied in New York.
google avatar

Ron M.

Yelp
This was a fun place and clearly a different food type, speaking to Madrid's status as an international city. The fried chicken bun was delectable. The waiter said it was too small to share it among three people so we got two. That was bad advice as we could easily have done so (albeit one bite each) and then had another kind to try ... it was really good so not having others was a missed opportunity. The gyoza were good as well. For the main course, I had hiyashi chukka, cold noodles with an egg. Both of those were good, but the cashews were ill conceived in the context of the dish and the greens were tasteless. But the sauce was the perfect mix of sweet and spicy. My daughter had shoyu ramen, which she enjoyed. My wife had a pork dish that she did not enjoy terribly, but I think it was just her reaction to it, not its taste. She'd wanted ramen, changed her mind at the last minute, and then regretted it.

Fred L.

Yelp
I'll start by saying that I'm a bit of a ramen snob. Having lived in Tokyo for a time and currently residing in NYC, I'm pretty particular of my noodles. The staff here is great and the bar scene is nice with a hipster/Brooklyn vibe. The drinks were great and the starters were reasonably tasty although they're not your traditional bao's and gyoza's. All their food has a modern twist which works in some respects but misses in others. Unfortunately, even though I really wanted to like this place, the ramen was a big miss. It was way too salty (had the Chuka which was moderately over salty and the manzamen which was way overly salted) and the noodles lacked the chewiness I generally look for in good noodles. The staff did deduct the cost of the noodles from our check after we mentioned the saltiness so maybe we caught them on a bad day. I would go back for the drinks and starters but would probably skip the ramen.

Lore R.

Yelp
Came here on a Friday night with no reservation and had to end up waiting an hour for a table for three but it was absolutely worth it. For starters the staff was incredibly nice and tried their best to accommodate us while we waited, and though half our table didn't speak Spanish the waiter was so helpful and friendly. Perhaps at the point we got our food it was total starvation but everything we had was incredible! Definitely recommended for anyone who's a ramen fan, or if you're not there are other things on the menu that were just as delicious

Larry C.

Yelp
Umm, no ramen in the summer. Disappointed. Odd flavors for the gyoza and their version of chuka "ramen"
