Best Charleston Restaurants to Bring Parents | Eater Carolinas

"One step inside this former church will have parents in awe, making the refined food offering an added bonus. The menu could be described as all over the place, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing when hosting company. The Ahi tuna poke bowl and pork fried rice become Asian-Southern mashups through the use of Carolina Gold rice, and the eatery utilizes similar flavors for vegetable dishes like the Kung Pao Brussels sprouts and the spicy Korean barbecue sauce-topped cauliflower." - Parker Milner

My husband and I made a reservation here on our honeymoon and it was OUT OF THIS WORLD! The service was wonderful we received complementary drinks and the gift card to their sister restaurant The Tempest to help us celebrate! We got a half dozen oysters that were absolutely delicious (I could eat plates of them), my husband got the 9oz Waygu Steak and I got Chef Jamie’s Lamb Burger! Both were just so amazing! And we finished off the meal with the cookies and cream mousse. By far the best meal we have had in Charleston so far! We will absolutely hit this spot every time we are in town and recommend to all our friends who visit! Not to mention the beautiful atmosphere, so lively and moody!

Google
Wow! 🤩 We got so lucky there were two seats available at the bar at this amazing restaurant! Super upbeat atmosphere and DELICIOUS food! The whole book of Art of War is written on the ceiling - lots of creativity and thoughts and meaning was put into development of this amazing restaurant - and it TRULY shows! Fried chicken was YUM! 😋 Do NOT skip dessert!!! The honey comb on top of the cake was so good… that I still remember the taste! Recommend to make a reservation in advance ~ because it’s a MUST dine in Charleston!

A Casual-Chic Spot set in a Church 🏛️☀️ 📍 The Venue: This place strikes the perfect balance between laid-back and elegant. Housed in a beautifully adapted church, it’s spacious, with a small outdoor seating (the back patio is a nice touch!). Ideal for a special-occasion dinner or a leisurely brunch. 💡 Pro Tip: I’d recommend making a reservation in the main room—they have two indoor spaces, and while our side was nice, the main space has more charm. That’s where you’ll get the gorgeous atmosphere! 🍽️ What We Ordered: - Brioche French Toast: Delicious, but the portion was smaller than expected. The fruits were fresh! - Fried Chicken Sandwich: Solid choice, and the fries were generous. 🍹 Drinks: Two mimosas—classic and pineapple. Both were refreshing, not very sweet. 🅿️ Parking: Plenty of paid street parking, but free on Sundays in downtown! 💁 Service: A major highlight! Our waitress was incredibly attentive and even picked up on our habit of sharing dishes—she offered to split our meals onto separate plates which was great. (That’s why the photos show everything divided!) 💭 Final Thoughts: Gorgeous setting, excellent service, but the food—while tasty—felt slightly overpriced for the portion sizes. Worth a visit for the ambiance!

As a military veteran, absolutely love The Art of War theme. The quotes on the wall were a wonderful site. Food was amazing, drinks off the charts, and atmosphere a definite must visit!

Google
Good experience! Food was great. I believe there were two beers on draft but the person who got a cocktail with my group said it was really good! I understand we're in an old church but the smell of incense was a little nauseating at times while trying to eat. A cool vibe though!

Google
What an absolutely gorgeous place to eat or just have a drink at the bar. Our server was very friendly. My wife and daughter told him they were going to split the salmon dish and it came out divided on two plates. The drinks were delicious. The food was great. This is a memorable place to eat while visiting Charleston.

Google
Service was absolutely top notch. We had a super long wait for our food (about 45 minutes) due to a very large corporate event on a Saturday night but we were checked on by two managers and the chef even came out to thank us for our patience. The food was excellent and perfectly cooked when it did finally arrive and we really enjoyed ourselves.

Google
Very nice place right by the old market area. An old church turned into an upscale (but not overly fancy) place for a nice night out. The bar area is fun (a bit loud, but not bad) and an excellent groups of bartenders. The dinner menu is small but full of high quality items. The steaks (and the sauce!) are very good. The ravioli was very good. The pasta cooked perfectly. Maybe a little too much cheese on the inside. Sauce was a tad sweet. But very good. Service was excellent. Our waiter (“Sam”) was very pleasant and on point with drinks and quick attention to detail. Overall, a great restaurant for an upper casual night out in Charleston.

Yelp
Such a stunning place! Service by Sam was amazing! He was friendly, prompt, very knowledgeable about the menu, and even gave some history of the beautiful restaurant. We really enjoyed the salmon dish & lamb burger. *Pro tip-Pasta is handmade, and so the quantity is limited. Get there for an earlier dinner service to try it. The carrot cake was a perfect ending to a pretty perfect dining experience. The bill comes in a booklet of the "Art of War", which I don't really get the correlation, but it was interesting and quirky. 10/10

Yelp
It's a shame that Church and Union has gotten so comfortable that they forget food quality matters. With an enthusiastic server, our expectations were high. Since the menu has several items described in code, we had questions. Our server was happy to display his exceedingly deep knowledge of the menu. As well as his opinion. Way too much information. On to the food. We ordered apps, oysters, meatballs, and fried green tomatoes. The oysters and meatballs were spot on. The green tomatoes were cooked perfectly, with no flavor! Team, taste your food! We also ordered the short ribs, the cowboy ribeye for 2, and the filet and haricot verts. Again, Team taste your food! Oily, no seasoning, and they had an unwashed taste. Good fries and drinks, so there's that. Oh, and one last zinger, automatic kitchen service fee of 3%. Seriously? I'm more than happy to tip the kitchen, I usually send beers, but only when they deserve it. Overall, it was a disappointing $500 meal. Poor form Church and Union.

Yelp
Full disclosure, this was my first meal in Charleston after 14 hours in transit due to flight delays, so I'm probably biased. That said, this place is legitimately good. Ambiance - This place looks like it is a repurposed old church and the ambiance is definitely there. While it may not match the building, the main theme of the decorations is Sun Tzu's art of war, which was painted over a three month period on the arched ceilings, quoted on walls and bathrooms, and used to hold the bills. It definitely has its charm, and the serving staff made sure to introduce it. Good stuff. The service was very hospitable, helped us split the check after the fact and wad genuinely nice a friendly. As for food, I can't speak to the other dishes on the table aside from the fact everyone enjoyed their food, but I had the lamb burger, and it was excellent. It was tender, juicy, not at all gamy, and the flavors all worked well. The fries were also excellent! Crispy, flavorful, and good throughout the meal even as they started getting cold. I'd definitely be willing to give it another shot when I'm less affected by pure hunger and travel fatigue, but first impressions were great!

Yelp
Church and Union Charleston had been on my radar for years and I'm so glad I finally went! I made a brunch reservation weeks in advance, which was a good move, because many people were waiting outside. The space itself was insanely cool, converted from an actual church building. The stained glass windows were beautiful and the high ceilings were fully covered in writing. It was fun watching every group who walked in get excited, and the ambiance was awesome. For drinks, I got the Ready Orgeat as a mocktail, which was pretty good and had a strong strawberry flavor. Our server also brought us complimentary mini scones, and my boyfriend's coffee came with little cookies on the side - lots of cute touches! For food, I ordered the Fried Chicken Sandwich, which I loved. The chicken was perfectly cooked and the portion size was ideal. I added the spiced honey glaze for $3, which gave it some extra flavor. I wasn't a huge fan of the home fries on the side though, so I ended up not eating those. My boyfriend really over-ordered by getting the Holy $h!t Breakfast. This was meant for 2 people and included fried chicken, eggs, bacon, house-made donuts, biscuits, and house-made jam. It was an insane amount of food! The scrambled eggs were just okay, but everything else was very tasty. He didn't come close to finishing all the food, and ended up with 2 to-go boxes. Service was friendly and fast - would definitely return!

Yelp
Visited Church & Union during a trip in Charleston and really loved it here. Some highlights: - the concept of a restaurant inside of a church is unique in itself lols - love how dimly lit it was, have a nice romantic vibe for a great date night - food was great, drinks were great also. Check them out if you're ever in the downtown Charleston area.
google avatar

Yelp
The restaurant is beautifully designed. It is very intimate and would be a cute place to take someone on a date. The server was kind and willing to please. The oysters were pretty good but the food seemed a bit lacking. It may just be my taste buds but the flavors for the onion rings did not mix well together. I also ordered the steak and potatoes and don't even remember what kind of steak I got, I just remembered it was not anything special for the cost. In terms of food, try it out if you want but I would probably eat somewhere before hand and come here for the oysters and some drinks instead(I don't drink but I heard they are good). Would give 5 stars if it was just an oyster bar. Might have to try other things on the menu next time to see if maybe there are better choices.

Yelp
We had an awesome time sitting at the bar at a Church and Union. They have a packed business- I'd recommend making a reservation far in advance. We showed up for our reservation and had to wait a bit so we ended up just eating at the bar instead. The bar is lively and has a great energy to it. The building is absolutely beautiful. The winners of the night were the cocktails, the fried chicken, and the brussel sprouts extra crispy. Highly highly recommend!!

Yelp
Definitely not what I expected! My work gave me a gift card to Church and Union, so we stopped in for brunch on a Sunday around 12:30. We had reservations and arrived early, so we started with mimosas at the bar. They have a regular mimosa for $6 and a Cadillac mimosa for $7, which uses fresh-squeezed orange juice. I feel they should get rid of the $6 option altogether, as a nice restaurant should only use fresh-squeezed juice in their mimosa. I tried both, and the Cadillac was definitely worth the extra $1! I had the praline French toast, while my boyfriend had the biscuits and gravy. I wasn't expecting much from this place, but both dishes were out of this world! The portion sizes weren't huge, which was nice because we were shopping after lunch and didn't want anything to go to waste. Service was speedy and helpful, so all in all, it's a great place to go if you're in downtown Charleston!

Yelp
Had dinner here on a Wednesday night. We started with some cocktails which were good. Followed that up with some oysters which were also excellent. For dinner I had the beast loaf which is basically meat loaf on mashed potatoes with some mushroom gravy. It was good. The other folks had the steaks which were also good. The place is very unique since it was an old church hence the name. The service was spot on although we gave a hard time all throughout the night. Would go to again.

Yelp
This place was good, service was good and the interior definitely neat. Unfortunately, the food in my opinion is very overpriced and instead of Leaving here feeling good about what I ate which was really good, I left thinking about my $22 burger and the $19 meatballs, $20 drinks. We spent $200+ for lunch here, food was good but we left a bit perplexed about the total cost. I would only recommend this place if you have really deep pockets.
google avatar

Yelp
Great late night spot that delivers on good food!! The setting is amazing! Dinner in a church with the art of war on the ceiling! The service was good. The food - had the duck - was very good! The pork belly is delish!
google avatar

Yelp
Church and Union came highly recommended and it did not disappoint. My family truly enjoyed every last bite. Crabcakes, halibut, lamb burger, fried chicken, and the hummus and Nola BBQ shrimp to start. Not a morsel was left on the table. Oh, and don't forget the Espresso Martinis.
google avatar

Monte' J.

Yelp
The service was great, seated quickly ( had reservations) the restaurant was pretty busy at 7:30 . The hummus was smooth, not bland but not full of flavor. Lamb burger 3/5 Bun was soft, lamb patty was tender, not a tone of flavor and on the small/medium size. The fries were 3/5 but the BBQ aoli was a good twist as ketchup. The salmon was a 3/5 moist and an OK portion size but nothing to write home about. We didn't get dessert as we were sat by a very loud 8 party table and wanted to be done ASAP! If you're in the are try them and form your own opinion.

Yelp
An absolute must go to brunch restaurant in Charleston!! The ambiance is 10/10 due to the restaurant is actually being inside a 150 year old church with words from the Art of War book written on the walls. The cookies and cream cinnamon roll was a little too sweet for me, but a nice thing for the whole table to share. I loved the local farm breakfast sandwich but sub bacon for sausage. My second time here and I will be back!

Yelp
So you're new to Charleston. This place is on everyone's TikTok and there are many reviews - most of which are mixed. Let me do you a favor and tell you to save your money. This place was unfortunately such a miss from the moment we walked in. Let me get to the good parts. To preface, 90%+ of my reviews are 4 or more stars. I love a good experience and will give it to a place who deserves it. - Our waitress was terrible. She took a while to first come to the table. She didn't refill waters. She had 0 recommendations outside of pointing to the menu. We also didn't get the (complimentary?) chips and hummus that every other table got. - The food was definitely a miss. Our appetizer was Morrocan meatballs, which were bland. My Ahi Tuna steak was not appetizing. The restaurant had no blue cheese for the steak. The substitution she recommended for the steak was a greasy liquid comparable to the garlic sauce you get in a Papa John's box. And of course the tab was still $230+ for this food. - The drinks came out at a good pace, but they were so watered down and more than $15+ a glass. Price is fine, but they better be good drinks. - The hand dryer was out in the men's bathroom. The whole restaurant was incredibly loud and very hot on the inside. All in all, this place was just not worth the money. It was disappointing to be at and I wish we didn't waste one of our precious nights here in Charleston. Save your money and time.

Yelp
This is definitely a must see place if you're in Charleston. The view in the church is gorgeous, and of your able to grab a table, the food is pretty decent also! They started us off with complimentary (& homemade) hummus and pita chips which were good. We also got The short rib special and salmon, which were both delicious - I just wish the short rib had more sauce. I also got a side southern salad, which was amazing (you've got the try it!). Overall was a very nice place, but pretty pricey (not that I'd not worth it - out server Matt was also amazing & we even got a chance to meet the manager as she stopped by to make sure things were running smoothly. Would definitely recommend!

Yelp
Wow, just wow, probably the best meal of our vacation and some of the bet chicken I've ever had! The restaurant is in old church, which there were some awesome stained glass windows still intact, but then the décor got interesting. Art of the War quotes covered the ceiling and actual Art of War books were what servers used to attach the check at the end of the meal. The lighting and big tree in the corner just added to the themed setting. Server was very professional and efficient with a friendly-sort of chill vibe. Started with SmokeShow and a passion fruit drink. The Smokeshow was really good and they actually smokes the rosemary which gave off a super pleasant aroma when drinking. The passion fruit drink was ok, but not my favorite. It was not as sweet as expected. They also give chips and humus as a free starter. The hummus had great flavor. Our meals were the hand braided ravioli and the fried chicken. The chicken was truly out of this world. It was covered in a sweet honey glaze and was some of the moistest chicken I've ever had. I can't stop thinking about it. It was served with ranch pickles, which were really good and an Alabama white sauce with a side of cornbread. The entire meal is enough to make me want to back to Charleston just for that. The ravioli was more doughy than a typical cheese ravioli. The sauce on it was really good and the garlic bread was flavorful and crunchy-chewy. Neither hubby nor I really cared for the ravioli. The stars of the meal, the smokeshow and the fried chicken were enough for us to give this restaurant 5 stars and highly recommend it.

Yelp
Beautiful building - worth the visit for this alone. The food was good for brunch, and our service was great. I would come back.
google avatar

Cathy J.

Yelp
Wow! For atmosphere, wow! For food We loved the large stained glass windows and the ceiling was inscribed with Sun Tzu's Art of War. We had to order the Holy Shit. It's a bit overwhelming but so good. A heaping pile of fluffy scrambled eggs, very crispy fried chicken, biscuits, bacon, bacon and more bacon plus 4 deliciously glazed, warm donuts. Oh yea and choice of mimosa or bloody Mary. Too bad it was a limited brunch menu, I would have liked to try some of their other menu items. Hopefully we'll return to Charleston some day to visit again. You must experience this if you're downtown and then walk off your meal at the marketplace next door.

Yelp
4/10/24: A group of us stopped in Church and Union Charleston for lunch. It's a very picturesque old church with a modern decor twist. Food was very good. Starters were tasty Chips with Pimento cheese Entrees were burgers and fried & grilled chicken sandwiches. Of course, tasty fries were included. Customer Service was very good.
google avatar

Nicholas S.

Yelp
Here's your chance to try a lamb burger. Its a beef lamb blend which takes the gamey edge off the lamb taste. Give it a shot and enjoy a good read of "the Art of War" deftly painted into the ceiling.

Yelp
What a cool place! From my research, this is one of the most popular restaurants for bachelorette parties in Charleston. This served to be true as most of the tables were bachelorette parties. My group had a reservation for brunch and were seated as soon as we arrived. The inside is amazing for photos with the stained glass windows and church-feels. Rather than each getting a mimosa, we decided to get a carafe for the table. They have many different mimosa flavors, or you can get a flight. We got the pineapple flavor. Not the strongest flavor for a mimosa, but it was still good. They also give you complimentary vanilla bean scones, were paired well with the mimosa. For brunch, most of us got the praline French toast. The portions were not huge, but seemed to be the perfect amount and were delicious. Highly recommend if you want a cool experience.
google avatar

Thuy N.

Yelp
We went straight here after landing during dinner on a weekday. As the Tropical storm Derby just passed the area, most places were closed. They had a skeleton crew. There was barely anyone inside so we were seated immediately. The servers were attentive and professional. As it is a converted church, the tall windows and stainless bar area was nice. It has a darker ambience. The menu did not have much as pictured on Yelp. We got the ravioli which was doughy but still tasty. I wanted to try the fried chicken but it was $30. The gelato was actually really chocolate and rich and reasonably priced. I would come here for the ambience but just know that is is on the pricey side.
google avatar

Yelp
Honestly the best tartare I have had in Charleston. I never would've thought to pair the curry flavor with this dish! They have truly outdone themselves with this deliciousness. The FO Agnolotti was also to die for. I wish u could just have a huge bowl of these for dinner. I had the poke bowl as my main and it did not disappoint- so fresh and such bright flavors. I initially went here just to see the beautifully painted ceiling and show some out of town friends a cool spot, but the food blew me away. The service was also great as the waiter knew so much about every dish and helped us make the right choices. 10/10!!!
google avatar

Cynthia L.

Yelp
My friend made reservations for me there and we asked to sit in the main area. The tables were a little too small in my opinion for my comfort but the food made up for it 1000%. The waiter was friendly and very helpful in what we should order etc. I had the special for the day and the food was amazing!! It was the best food I had all day! I told my friends this was my best meal but I had also not eaten all day so maybe I was a little hangry . ‍. But they started us off w hummus and some kind of pita chips! Let me tell you! I don't like hummus and I devoured it! It was soooo good. My friend ordered their ravioli which I was able to try and another 5 star meal it was amazing- the waiter told us it was homemade etc. if I'm ever in the area again I would come back bc it was soo good! Definitely recommend ! I really loved the ambiance. Also prob not kid friendly since small tables etc.

Yelp
Such a unique place to have dinner, since it used to be an old church. The staff was easygoing and accommodating with us, we were late since I got the time mixed up for our reservation. Our server was welcoming and helpful. There are complimentary chips and hummus. The chips are quite salty. Good cocktails. I think I prefer my boyfriend's cocktails more than mine though, so we switch on the second round. The meatballs were delicious and tender, and I loved the different flavor profile. The portion size was tiny though. Same for my duck confit. The duck was very tender and flavorful. For the price, I expected a side to go along with the meal. The salmon was tasty but on the drier side. Overall, we had a pleasant dining experience. Definitely a place to try while in Charleston.
google avatar

Susan J.

Yelp
Overrated? Perhaps. Fun? Undoubtedly. Good for your bachelorette party? Definitely. We tried this based on reviews, and found our own to be mixed. The ambiance is great. Fun people, lots of parties, excellent decor and vibe. The food is just so-so. While it tries very hard, it falls a little flat or underwhelming. The Beast Loaf was way over-flavored so much so that it tasted like it came from a box. Almost like school lunch Salisbury steak. The Salmon was better, but nothing special. Maybe we ordered the wrong things. The guy next to me got the Fried Chicken and I was more than a little jealous. The Ravioli looked good too. Live and learn. I did like the hummus and chips brought to the table instead of regular bread and butter. Service was excellent in every way. Decor is perfect. And hey, you can always read The Art Of War if you are so inclined.
google avatar

Yelp
Nothing much to say that hasn't already been said! Gorgeous venue and decent food! No bottomless mimosa option here, only carafes. We came for brunch and ordered the Oreo cinnamon roll to start and for my main I ordered the lamb burger. The cinnamon roll is a pass for me, it's small and they over baked it so it was hard on the outside. The lamb burger was well seasoned and flavorful. It was served with a small teeny tiny handful of home fries. Side note they only serve hot coffee drinks, nothing iced!
google avatar

Yelp
Beautiful old church location delicious Caesar salad with truffle Sat at beautiful bar and had excellent service!

Yelp
The summer burrata salad was so good . This rustic salad was just what I needed on this hot humid day. The creamy burrata was so fresh and perfect, with the fragrant basil and juicy tomatoes. Look up to the most beautiful church ceiling. Spectacular with 60-foot vaulted ceilings and stained glass windows.

Yelp
Thank you for a wonderful bachelorette weekend brunch, Church and Union team! As a table of 9, we were seated in one of the high top center tables in the main dining room--prime real estate inside the breathtaking space. Our service was top notch from start to finish. Our server was personable, professional and attentive. We ordered the cookies and cream cinnamon rolls to share, which were undeniably a 5 star small bite. Warm, gooey, melt in your mouth fresh with the perfect ratio of cinnamon to cookies and cream flavor. The perfect sweet bite to start! The bride to be was treated to a mimosa flight by the Church and Union team--so thoughtful and generous! The flight is an excellent brunch deal coming with essentially 4 mimosa flutes for just $16. Single flutes will run you only $5. I ordered the avocado toast and side of fresh fruit for my main. The ciabatta was thick, fresh and flavorful, serving as the perfect vehicle for creamy, sliced avocado. The everything bagel seasoning and ricotta spread takes the dish to the next level. A winner for sure! The rest of the dishes (ranging across the menu) got top marks as well. Make this a do not miss meal in Charleston!

Yelp
First time visitor celebrating friend birthday Indoor and outdoor dining available Street parking Reservation a must for very busy nights but walk in for bar area Seem like a dressy spot and it gets loud so be prepare to speak up and appears popular spot for bachelorette parties Server answered all question and was attentive but wasn't as personable Pricey place with ambiance and unique decor from wall to ceiling and can be dark to see and hear Southern salad easily shareable and tasty with house made ravioli but some bites were undercooked Drinks were made well Overall popular pretty hangout spot for groups dates and special occasion, glad to try it out.

Yelp
This is a cute place to enjoy a romantic evening or just have an interesting experience eating dinner inside of an old church. The inside of the restaurant is beautiful. The food here was solid, won't be disappointed with the food that you order, you will be disappointed in the price of the food though, more expensive than it needs to be. Definitely recommend getting the fried chicken or the hand made ravioloi, both are excellent. They do get one thing right with having the Maryland crab cakes instead of Carolina!
google avatar

Brittany D.

Yelp
Very cool on the inside, unique. I definitely wouldn't recommend their patio. We sat at the bar :) we had a split salad, duck entree and the ravioli. My husband said the duck was delicious. The ravioli I got was SO good, you could tell it was handmade daily, the sauce was garlicky and flavorful. Mm mm so good. Bar tender took our order and was nice.
google avatar

Yelp
The food wasn't anything worth writing about but the ambiance was very cool and located near the market so a quick walk over. The service was only ok. Again not really impressed outside of the decor.

Yelp
DELICIOUS! This place has been the high of the trip so far and tori was a great server! The sausage gravy was the best I've ever had and I'm pretty sure I said how good it was after every bite. The chorizo in the huevos rancheros was very good and not too salty like it can be. The home fries were cooked perfectly and the homemade biscuit was chef's kiss. Our first cocktails were refreshing and yummy and the espresso martinis were as good as the looked. The old church building is a beautiful venue for this remodeled restaurant and and there is so much to look at. Definitely book a reservation here!

Yelp
There is so much to say about a place that has history, great cocktails and really good food! As we walked in for our reservation the sunset hit the gorgeous stained-glass windows and all I can say is that the colors were unforgettable. Simply beautiful. After sitting down our wonderful server greeted and gave us a rundown of the history and menu. Our delicious cocktails came out quickly and so did their equally tasty complementary chips and hummus. Our table enjoyed the seafood platter along with the meat and cheese platter. My only suggestion is to ask for the house made horseradish and pita chips to enjoy the seafood platter as this elevates the dish to another level. I hope y'all enjoy this place in Charleston as much as we did.

Yelp
We arrived on time for a reservation and were fairly promptly shown to a table which unfortunately was in the very large and very loud bar area. I thought about taking one star off for that but I thought since it was a Saturday night that it was just the way things were. After all, there was another, seemingly quiet side of the building which had regular table seating. Note well for your visit, fans! When seated, we were brought pita style chips with a guacamole dip. All quite good, and free. Our server was Jon, a very responsive, Johnny-on-the-spot guy. He told us also a bit of history of this 200-year-old building and the book which was painted on the ceiling by an artist who did a wonderful job but I wish I could read it all. One of my pictures showed that the name of the book, which stressed peace instead of war. For an appetizer, we shared the NOLA (short for New Orleans style) shrimp which were extraordinarily good. Although they were a bit pricey at $19 I still would order them again when I returned to this wonderful restaurant. They had the New Orleans style Creole sauce all over the well cooked ( boiled not fried) shrimp which yes we used to sop up all of the sauce. My choice for my main course was the entrée feature, a Nola ribeye which had shrimp and that wonderful, tasty sauce laid on top, for $62. The steak was a good quality and cooked to a medium rare per my request. My wife had the scallops ($45) and was well enjoyed, especially with the crispy prosciutto melded in. It was great food but was expensive at $209.79 with the $20.79 in tax. This is a special restaurant which delivers in food, service, and in ambience, despite the louder music on the wall mounted speakers near our table.

Yelp
I've been to Church and Union (previously 5church) several times over the years, and somehow have never reviewed it! My husband and I were due for a great brunch, and the last time I was here it was phenomenal so I made sure to book a reservation ASAP since it fills up quickly. The decor and vibes are always stunning- there is something special about dining in a church in the middle of Charleston, with "Art of War" writing covering the walls. When the light comes through the stained glass windows, it is beautiful. We went with the huevos rancheros and fried chicken sandwich for our entrees. The huevos rancheros is a MASSIVE serving of eggs- like seriously 6-8 of them, at least. It came out hot and the salsa was divine. The fried chicken sandwich was a little cold, and not very crunchy, which I assumed meant it wasn't made fresh. The pickles and sauce on top packed a good punch of flavor, though! The potatoes that came with it weren't crunchy like I prefer, but they were hot. The sandwich and potatoes seemed like a small serving compared to the huevos rancheros. A few other things that weren't ideal. The bathroom smelled horrendous- like rotten eggs. It was Sunday brunch, so I'm sure some patrons were going through it in their recovery. It also took us a while to get silverware after our meal arrived, and we were never offered coffee refills. All in all, it was still a good brunch (and at pretty good price for Charleston) but unfortunately not the 5/5 experience I've had in the past.

Yelp
The brunch is amazing! My go to is the beets and burrata salad. It is a palate pleaser that I'm always happy to pair with a mimosa. I absolutely love that this restaurant is an old church and think everyone should check it out at least once. They do a wonderful job decorating for the holidays. The decor is so festive and pretty! Great service as well!

Yelp
Came here for the Valentine's Day dinner with the girlfriend. I picked Church and Inion for the V-Day menu (gf is a steak lover) and the inside looked super atmospheric. As soon as I sat down I was dreading the meal. There was a table next to us in the corner with a newborn infant. As a parent of three, I am not unsympathetic. But the restaurant never should have allowed someone to come in with an infant on a special holiday night when it's all adults trying to have a romantic dinner. It was completely inappropriate. To make matters worse, they seemed to have some connection to the people here. Throughout my entire meal there was a constant stream of various employees hanging out at this table, crowding me and my girlfriend, in addition to the already crowded nature of Valentines Day and their baby stroller being parked between our tables. We ordered the wine pairings for my girlfriend. All of the wines came out long before the dishes, so it wasn't truly a "wine pairing", because all of the wine was finished by the time the food came out. Pour size on the wines was "stingy" to put it nicely. She had the carrots & ricotta appetizer, I had the pork belly toast. Her's was OK, mine was absolutely disgusting. The fat on the pork, instead of being crispy, was just... fatty. The combo of things on the bread was way too much, there was no good way to eat it and it tasted disgusting. The steak was ordered medium rare and was cool, borderline cold when we got it and dark maroon. This was a rare steak... a very rare steak. Considering that they cut into slices it before bringing it to the tables this should have been caught and stopped and never brought to the table in the first place. The steak - and yes, ribeyes are a bit fatty - was in desperate need of a trimming, entire bites were nothing but fat. The whipped spinach was horrible, it was just spinach mixed with a ton of cheese and had no flavor just a lot of salt. There was some sort of puff pastry, I had a bit and that was it. The lobster was tough and chewy and had some sort of glaze on it that I didn't care for very much. The desserts were so boring, this was the first time in my recent memory that I didn't eat it all. One bit for each of us on the dark chocolate raspberry mousse, the dark chocolate was way too dark, I didn't taste any raspberry. My cheesecake was overwhelmed by the crust, all I could taste was graham crackers. Service was fine, especially given that it was a special event. Ambiance was gorgeous as I thought it would be, the playlist was all over the place and not particularly romantic in any way. As I often say in my reviews, price sets expectations. This was the most expensive meal I have ever had in my life. I have had some very expensive meals... this was the most expensive. For this amount of money I expect perfection. I got a lot of very nicely presented items in a cool location and none of it tasted particularly good. When we sat down we said we would love to come back on a non-holiday... on the way home we decided that we were not coming back. I wanted to give sister restaurant Tempest a try, but if that lobster was any indication, I have no desire to check them out either. J.Ja

Yelp
Amazing brunch spot located in historical downtown Charleston! They do 25% off for Military as well! their history as a church paired with the art on the walls and ceiling create a scenic ambiance. The art of war book is written over the ceiling. I had their breakfast sandwich and had no complaints. An absolute delight and will be back!

Yelp
We were SO happy we snagged a late night, last minute reservation for Church & Union. This is the coolest spot, with excellent food, fun cocktails and mocktails & incredible service. Shareable portions with a fun ambiance. Nate gave us the most thoughtful service - from ensuring all of our dishes were allergen friendly, to splitting all of our shared appetizers onto two plates, we thoroughly appreciated having him as our server. We especially loved the fired chicken and the Moroccan meatballs. The homemade hummus & pita as a complimentary starter are DELICIOUS! Highly recommend Church & Union for a special night out.

Yelp
We had a 9pm reservation for 9 people. We showed up and were told the table they planned on sitting us at, is paying their bill and we would be seated shortly. That "shortly" ended up being 40 minutes and it wasn't the table they planned for. We had to ask them if they could relocate two guests who were sitting at a 10 top table. Luckily the girls were agreeable and understanding and we finally got a table. Our server was friendly but didn't check back in after our meal was served. The food was okay...nothing great. It honestly looks so much better than it actually tastes. The atmosphere was pretty and they had good music on. Bathrooms were horribly smelly and dirty.

Yelp
Hey, to the balding manager.... Be KIND!!! We were sitting with a bachelorette group that invited us to stay with their table..... just to be rudely removed..... we just wanted to experience your vibes... you're u could have been a little more specific and kind on where to sit. We made ourselves quite comfortable and welcomed without your help...... just be kinder on your approach to others in the future... we love your bar and would never want anyone to be approached like we were at the seatings we were.

Yelp
Had a reservation for a party of 11. Extremely accommodating! Fast, cleanly service with great recommendations. Tried a pomegranate mimosa for the first time and loved it! Food was well portioned and flavorful. The complimentary vanilla scones were a great prefix to the entrees. Another nice touch was the sides of butter, jelly, hot sauce, etc brought out before entrees arrived, just in case. Great experience

Yelp
Interesting church-themed decor, which was definitely unique. The place is a bit on the pricey side. Ended up spending $30 for a burger, including tips
