Where Philly’s Chinatown Community Leaders Go to Eat

"It’s important to get Hainanese chicken rice right — and oh-so-easy to get something so beautifully simple wrong. Samuel Chueh scarfs down the silky boiled chicken and deliciously fragrant rice, which is cooked with rendered chicken fat. The fried chicken is also very flavorful, and so too is the accompanying more-sweet-than-spicy chili sauce that really goes with everything." - Diana Lu

Only 6 pieces of chicken? When we dined in, I thought the portion was bigger. This order (pictured) includes tom yum soup and a few extra dollars for the takeout tip—totaling $35. Not worth it for what you get

Google
Everything we had was delicious! I had the Pad Thaï, crab rangoons, and the mango sticky rice! I can’t stop thinking about the mango sticky rice! The only slight complaint I had was the crab Rangoons were still a little cold when they got to us. Did that stop us from eating them, no. I would definitely go back to try more in their menu!

Every time I have to go to Philly I have to stop at this place for lunch ! I usually get a mix and never disappoint chicken very tender and fried chicken so crispy all the sauces are delicious. The broth is so good with it . ❤️❤️ I recommend you guys to try this place

Google
Not bad chicken! Comforting and classic. Didn’t order anything too crazy but it’s well priced.

Google
A small mighty restaurent in China town. Service was good , staffs are attentive , food came to our table quick and hot. Very conveniently located once you you find your parking near by. Restrooms are clean , max 30 people seating capacity . Food tasted good though based on your food selection. You will find various Thai flavors with some mix like fried chicken. Limited menu and believe all should be tasting good. We ordered stir fried chicken with veg , Thai basil fried chicken, spring roll , tomyum soup. Food portion is good for a single person. I ordered medium spice for fried rice and stir fried chicken(it’s very hot and I struggled to consume the whole food), usually I will be able to handle spicy food but for me it’s struggle , so be sure before you order for hot spicy. Spring roll does not seems like house made. I felt the price is bit higher for 2 person we ended up paying (60 incl tip). No complaints on food quality and serving but the price for the tiny store was no justifiable but still it’s good place for Thai food. Will recommend 👍

Google
This place was constantly recommended to me by my colleagues, and it hit the spot. I was told to get Set 1 mixed, fried and steamed chicken with rice and soup. I also got the crab rangoons which were delicious. The rice was not just plain white rice but had some sort of seasoning and flavor which was really good. I liked the steamed chicken better than the fried, but it was all delicious and the sauces were great. The soup was decent, the giant radish was a surprise for sure. Solid spot overall!

Google
I come to Philly Chinatown for this place, every. Time. The combo chicken plate hits the spot! Reminds me Street food in Thailand. Sometimes you're able to get Hainanese chicken from other SE Asian restaurants but the sauce is not the same. The clear broth is radish is a good accompaniment as well. Nice service even when you're simply dining solo.

Google
So happy to discover that their chicken and beef dishes are halal! My husband and I visited today and absolutely loved the food. The drunken noodles were incredibly flavorful — probably the best we’ve had. Just a note: definitely go easy on the spice level if you’re sensitive to heat. I ordered the Set 1 mixed chicken with ginger rice, and to my surprise, I really enjoyed the boiled chicken — it paired perfectly with the sauces provided. The rice alone was so delicious and packed with flavor. The prices were very reasonable, and I imagine it’s even more affordable if you visit during lunch. Overall, such a satisfying meal. Can’t wait to come back and try another dish!

Yelp
Food: I always get the set when I come here. It comes with chicken soup, ginger rice, the 3 classic sauces (scallion oil, sweet soy sauce, chili sauce), and the boneless chicken. You can choose to get all fried or all boiled. However, I tend to opt for half and half. The soup and rice is flavorful. The chicken pairs perfectly with the sauces. Sometimes they serve organs such as the chicken gizzard. The set is a really good deal! Service: Pretty quick and food doesn't take very long. Ambiance: Smaller restaurant. I would say it's probably hard to come here if you have a group larger than 4. Definitely expect a wait on the busier nights.

Yelp
Best food I had in Philly! I was dining in alone - and wasn't seated, so I sat at the bar and waited for a menu. They told me to order in the front to-go, so I shyly corrected them that I'd be dining in. I selected the boiled chicken, and an order of fried dumplings. The chicken was juicy, and the rice had just a slight hint of flavor. Even without the sauces, it was good! However, the star of this dish is definitely the radish soup. The soup was warm and hearty, and paired well with the chicken and rice. I've had my fair share of dumplings - and while I'm not sure that these were made in house, they were definitely cooked to perfection. Perfectly crispy, with the right amount of crunch. While I definitely felt rushed to finish my meal and get out of there, I still recommend stopping by for some hainanese style chicken rice. If you plan on dining in, do make sure you make a reservation or call in advance because there is limited seating options.

Yelp
Been here a few times. Located in chinatown in Philly, this place specializes in Hainanese chicken and rice. The interior is pretty modern and somewhat trendy. The food comes out relatively fast. I've only ordered the chicken and rice dish. I tried both the fried and boiled options. I'd say the boiled option is better. The rice is flavorful and seasoned well. It's a good place to grab a quick bite.

Yelp
The service and food were well worth it. I think the amount of food I got was great for the value and the taste was there for me. The area is well lit and clean.

Yelp
Hainanese chicken rice is one of my favorite comfort meals, and I was so excited when I found out this place in Chinatown specializes in it! We ordered the set for 2, which came with the chicken fried and boiled. I prefer the boiled option as personal preference, but the fried was very crispy and tasted just as good. The rice is flavored well, and the set also comes with a light chicken broth/soup. The service was quick. The restaurant itself is on the smaller side, so seating is a bit tight but still comfortable.

Yelp
Stopped by after some sightseeing and ordered the mixed chicken rice dish for 1. Don't have this around my way so it was a treat getting to taste something different. Amazing taste on the chicken, both poached and fried as well as the sauce presentation. Fabulous! Service was fast, and food was bomb. Glad we arrived before the rush because place was starting to get packed (6pm ish). Recommend if in the area! Radish soup was on point and complimented it all!

Yelp
I went to this place TWO DAYS in a row because I loved it that much! I wanted a good pick me up meal, and the mixed set was perfect for that. I don't know if I loved the fried chicken or boiled more but the SAUCES were SO GOOD. I finished the entirety of the ginger one cause I loved it so much. I did try the Thai iced tea but it was a little too sweet for me. I also tried the mango sticky rice for dessert, but I felt like I tasted mango more than coconut. The mango DID taste really good, I just wanted more coconut (personal preference). 10/10 would go back

Yelp
I went here right after their lunch break so we were the first customers. We ordered their vegetable and tofu dish, and fried chicken and boiled chicken combo. I felt the tofu dish could have had more veggies in them for the price, but it was tasty. The sauce that comes with the chicken is good, especially the ginger sauce. I personally like the fried chicken (which paired well with the chili sauce), but both types of chicken were delicious. Ginger rice was nice and comforting, although I was not a huge fan of the soup except for the daikon (the soup was too salty for me). The service was quick and efficient; this place is not spacious, but it seemed like they were getting fair numbers of take out orders coming in. I would go back again and try some more items!

Yelp
Comforting & clean meal for a great price! The boiled chicken is perfectly cooked! I really enjoyed the side of soup too- it had a strong ginger taste and it was so soothing. A set of hainanese chicken, rice, and soup for 2 was around $25.
google avatar

Yelp
Solid option for chicken and rice in Philly's Chinatown! Cute interior design and you can pay by Venmo. I enjoyed fish cakes and the Mixed fried and steamed Set 1 Boneless Chicken Over Rice--seemed like the best of both worlds. It was delicious--I loved the depth of the flavor of the rice, as well as the protein. You could tell they cooked it for a while to get the flavor right! Service was friendly and prompt.

Yelp
Got the combo plate for 2. All around the food has really good seasoning. The rice is super flavorful and comes out really hot which I like. The chicken is super crispy!!! Was surprised at how crunchy they got it. The haianese chicken is pretty standard. I like the different variation of sauces that it comes with. Overall great spot to grab a casual lunch or dinner.

Yelp
Came highly recommended from a foodie friend so we decided we need to take a nice walk over to Chinatown to try out this spot. Ordered #2 with crispy chicken. The symphony of flavors of the chicken, rice, and soup will tantalize your tastebuds. The food, the affordability, and cleanliness is exactly what everyone needs. You will love it!

Yelp
I've made a requirement to always eat here whenever I'm in Philly. I love chicken rice and this place is awesome. Service is great, very casual spot. The chicken/rice is delicious, moist, and flavorful. Reminds me of places in Thailand and Singapore. They have legit prices as well. The combos are a great deal. I love mixing it up between regular and fried. This place is a must try.

Yelp
finally tried this chicken place!!!! yall the hainanese chicken was so so clean and chewy and not dry and delicious! highly recommend getting the sets because they come with chicken soup and rice! i got the set for 2 people and it was the perfect amount of food for only $22!!! there's plenty of seating and the service is really fast. also the interior design is super cute there's cute chickens drawn everywhere hehe. if ur craving a simple affordable meal go here !

Yelp
My new favorite restaurant in Chinatown! I've been here twice recently, and I've gotten the same order both times. The fried chicken with ginger rice served with soup is absolutely fire. The fried chicken is somehow cooked in a way that doesn't taste overly fatty or greasy, and it quite possibly is the best fried chicken I've ever had. The ginger rice is somehow mind-blowing and pairs perfectly with the chicken. The soup is soothing and washes down the dish well. Service is prompt and friendly, and this restaurant typically has a good amount of customers at all times. Cily Chicken is a 10 out of 10!

Waymee L.

Yelp
The chicken and rice were amazing! A ton of umami flavor. The radish soup warmed me right up on a cold winter day. Simple but delicious clear soup. I'm quite impressed! Will definitely go back. I would recommend trying the combination of the fried and poached chicken. Just a great, yummy, filling healthy meal. Service was prompt. Clean.

Yelp
I like the fact that the place had an area for solo people to eat as well as people with Groups. The green tea Tai T was absolutely delicious and I like the multi part meal with soup rice and cucumbers.

Yelp
Got the mixed chicken set for 2 and wow, was I surprised. This place reminds me of a Hainan chicken restaurant that I love back at home, and I already know I will be coming back very often throughout the year. The restaurant is small in size and I could see it getting packed if it is busy. About the food, I personally enjoyed the boiled chicken a bit more than the crispy but if you are looking for a crunch, it still is really good. The soup was amazing, it was a chicken soup with nice chunks of daikon, very well seasoned. The right sauce was a sweet and sour and meant for the crispy chicken. The ginger oil was definitely the best sauce for me.
google avatar

JingJing X.

Yelp
We ordered 2 mixed chicken sets and I was blown away by how juicy and flavorful the chicken was. The fried chicken was crispy without being too greasy and the boiled chicken was so tender. The sets came with a ginger rice which was good, but nothing spectacular. You also get a soup on the side which felt healthy and clean. They also had other dishes like drunken noodles which looked good too (the table next to us ordered a bunch of non-chicken foods). Prices are a bit higher for Chinatown, but reasonable for the quality of food.

Yelp
Small, easy to find, easy to read menu kind of a place. Reminds me of a mom and pop kinda restaurant in the busy streets of town. Simple arrangement of seats, basically nice for one to 2 at best 4 people but not the place for full families. Not a big place at all if you know what I mean. The food was delicious, tastes very flavorful and affordable!! Not a huge menu but the items on here are good enough to keep a restaurant open. Very clean and spacious bathroom. Excellent.
google avatar

Yelp
Took me back to Singapore. The chicken rice was full of flavors and so was the fish cakes. I did a takeout and I think if I ate at the restaurant when the food was hot it would have been at another level. Need to find a similar place in the Bay Area.
google avatar

Yelp
I really wanted to try a new thai spot in the city and this had decent reviews. I WAS extremely dissappointed. We got our usual go tos from thai restaurants like drunken noodles and pad thai. We also decided to try the garlic eggplant. The eggplant and drunken noodles were TOOO spicy it was to even take a bite. The pad thai literally had NO flavor, it seemed like they forgot to put the sauce in the noodles. Definitely will not be coming back here anytime soon.

Yelp
Came in around 5:30pm on a Friday with no wait. We ordered the chicken and rice set for 2 with half boiled and half fried chicken. I found it very odd and annoying that for the 1 person set you can add on a side of the liver/gizzard for $1, but you can't pay $2 for the same option in the 2 person set. We liked the fried chicken but found the boiled chicken bland compared to other Hainan chickens we've had. The darker red chili sauce was solid but I wasn't a fan of their ginger or sweet chili sauces.
google avatar

Michelle T.

Yelp
I love Cily chicken! I don't feel like crap after eating here, it feels very healthy and fresh! The resturant itself is very cute and has alot of decorations. I come here pretty often. Came here on a Monday night around 6-7 pm and we were able to get seated away for a table of 5. The portions are a little smaller than before but still very filling. Prices have not changed much since when I first had it so it is good! We ordered 3 sets of the steamed and 2 sets of the fried, and an order of the drunk noodles along with a couple of thai teas and the thai green tea. The thai green tea was soo good!
google avatar

Yelp
LOVE IT HERE!! What a hidden gem in Chinatown and their menu has gotten bigger! We always get the Crispy chicken rice platter. However, recently just tried their Tom yum soup and pineapple fried rice. Very good!
google avatar

Priscilla C.

Yelp
Cily chicken rice has a neat small menu with simply delicious flavors. Their main draw is the chicken. Chicken is available boiled or fried and both are perfectly cooked and very satisfying. The chicken bones are all removed but the flavor from the bones is definitely there. Each patron is served their own set of 3 dipping sauces for chicken. The ginger rice was great also and has to be ordered separately. They also have some Thai dishes like pad Thai and pad kee mao. I enjoyed to Tom yum going soup. All meals had great balanced flavors. My kids loved it too. I would definitely return.
google avatar

Lucy C.

Yelp
*HIGHLY RECOMMEND* Cily Chinese is literally one for my favorite restaurants in Chinatown. I've gone too many times to count, a regular I would say, because their chicken hits the spot every single time. You MUST get their chicken set, highly recommend half boiled half fried. The fried chicken is super crispy and taste the best with the sweet chili sauce. The boiled chicken is a good complement to the fried and keeps the meal light. This set also comes with daikon soup (super flavorful and warms my soul) and chicken broth infused rice (tastiest rice I've ever had). They even give you some liver/gizzards on the side! The portion is very generous and at a great price as well. Their other food is decent, like Tom Yum soup and drunken noodles, but nothing beats their chicken. I also really like their green thai ice tea, just a bit on the sweeter side but I love the flavor. *VERDICT* Definitely will come back again and again.
google avatar

Yelp
I was a big fan of this place when it first opened but today I spent 50 plus dollars for 2 entrees and a drink only to find out they began to skimp on their portions of chicken and also refried precooked chicken for the fried chicken portion. The fried chicken was dry and very obviously recooked. At the end of the day if I am going to spend 50 dollars on food, I expect better. Will give another try and I hope they actually pay attention to these reviews.

Yelp
Right off the bat, I thought this place had a very cool and bright interior. We ordered the crab rangoon and set 3. The crab rangoon had a good amount of filling. The set 3 was filling enough for three people. My favorite sauce was the orange colored ginger chili sauce. I like that the ginger rice was not too gingery and that it was a good portion. The soup was very simple but tasty. Only complaint was that our server held the cups and bowls by the mouth-rims. Otherwise, this was a nice casual experience and I would go again.
google avatar

Cleveland S.

Yelp
Genuinely love this place, been a few times. I always get their pad Thai and crab rangoons, while my buddies get their chicken and rice etc... The environment of the store is quite awesome and they truly have a comfortable theme they're going for!! Service has always been great, thanks to the staff for being nice to me! I love the food I've tried here and this place is a go to for my two meals I mentioned above. Will come again, will return, will munch.
google avatar

Brittany L.

Yelp
Great service and cozy spot in Chinatown for some great chicken. The crab Rangoons and fried Pork Gyoza was so amazing and fresh. The ladies working the counter were so beyond friendly to me and my family. Would recommend to anyone for an intimate late night dinner.
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
Ordered a dish to go when I was in the area. After I received my order I thought I'd eat part of my meal at the bar style seating by the door. As I was taking out my food I was told to leave. Seems like a strange policy that I was unable to eat the food I purchased at the establishment I purchased it from.

Yelp
We were super depraved of good Asian food recently, and when a friend asked if we wanted to come hang out in Philly, we jumped at the chance. We decided to go to Cily for our first meal when we got to Philly! We walked over from our hotel and managed to grab the last open table for 3 people. The waitress was nice and gave us menus/waters while we waited for our friend. We decided on the set for 3 (honestly a really good deal - I believe it was 25.99, whereas a set for one is 9.99). We went with the mixed chicken (fried and boiled). We also got an order of spring rolls, gyoza, and chicken pad Thai. We spent a long time catching up with our friend, and the waitress knew when to come in to ask us about putting in an order and not really interrupting us. She was great and efficient. The food came out pretty quickly. My husband and I love Hainanese chicken and were super happy with the food. The soup was DELICIOUS. It tasted like something my mom would make, it made me feel like I was home. The rice was of course fantastic. I could have eaten that by itself. The spring rolls were standard (aka great fried food). I didn't get a chance to try to gyoza but my husband downed 2 right away. The chicken was cooked perfectly. They also provided us with the standard 3 sauces, and that ginger one is just top notch. The pad Thai was surprisingly better then I thought it'd be. It was weirdly addicting, and I couldn't stop munching on it. Overall just a really good meal. Waitress seemed a little overworked, but she killed it. And didn't bother us when we were deep in conversation. We also ended up taking a bunch of food home. My husband already said it was his favorite meal of the weekend trip!

Naha S.

Yelp
This place is definitely worth the try! The krapow gai kai dow was amazing!!! I asked for it extra spicy and it was sooooo good!!! I'll definitely be a regular here.
google avatar

Yelp
This review is for take out only! I ordered set one and paid $2 for both fried and poached chicken (so I could try both!). I was really excited to try this place because it is really rare to find Thai chicken rice (which is my absolute favorite Thai street food). The order took a bit to make since the small restaurant was filled with people but I didn't mind waiting. The girl who took my order was nice enough to give me a small bag when I was struggling with another leftover container I had with me which was very nice of her! I got home and ate the food later for dinner. First the rice was very fragrant with hints of ginger and garlic yummm. The poached chicken had a light flavor to it but was very good. The fried chicken was more flavorful so I'm glad I got both! The set comes with three different sauces you can dip the chicken in, cucumbers and a small soup. Everything was great and a good size portion. I would def..come back and try other options (def. Getting some Thai ice tea and dessert next time!)
google avatar

Ben Y.

Yelp
The soup was inoffensive and was warming on the cold day but the greatest hit was the mixed chicken and rice. This chicken is fried to perfection and the three dipping sauces that come with it are also very good. The boiled chicken I didn't expect to be as juicy as it was but it also was quite good. I don't think I've ever said this but the greatest piece to this dish was the rice. They took the soul of chicken and infused it with the rice. I don't know how they did it, some form of culinary witchcraft or they took the water that boils the chicken and used it to make the rice. Either way very delicious and most certainly worth a try.
google avatar

Abraham K.

Yelp
So good! The fried chicken is fire and so is their boiled with ginger dipping sauces. The set meals also have this tasty daikon soup that is super delicious.
google avatar

Howard D.

Yelp
Got the set for one person, mixed style (half boiled half fried). The boiled is classic hainanese which is done well, but the highlight for me is the fried chicken. 3 sauces - two for boiled and one for fried. Good portion and good price (I believe $12 before tax).
google avatar

Penprapha B.

Yelp
Cute little Thai restaurant in China Town. I ordered set 1 with crispy fried chicken. Rice was cooked perfectly. I wish I lived in the area!
google avatar

Jenny G.

Yelp
I was excited to try the restaurant because the pictures on Yelp looked delicious, and the cartoon wall art was super cute. However, I thought the food was just alright. Set 1 Boneless Chicken Over Rice (Fried): The chicken was crispy but bland. However, the ginger rice was super interesting - the ginger flavor was strongly infused throughout. Pad See Eew: Bland, there was not enough soy sauce to fully flavor the dish. Massaman Curry: Good! Flavorful and great portion size.
google avatar

Melanie T.

Yelp
The food here continues to be amazing! Though the portion sizes have gotten a bit smaller. We ordered the fish cakes for appetizer and shared a set of 2 - fried and boiled chicken and rice as well as drunken noodles between 3 people. The set comes with radish soup as well. The restaurant wasn't busy when we went so the food came out pretty fast.

Lucy H.

Yelp
If u never been here, it's a must try. Order the Combo yummy I just moved in to China Town, I'm trying every restaurant. The chicken Rice is delicious. Chicken is so crispy. The white meat is included. Enjoy!!!!!
google avatar

Heather L.

Yelp
This place was soo unexpectedly good! Good price for the combo meal - staff was friendly and service was good. Chicken was cooked perfectly and well seasoned, soup flavor was good even though it was so simple, sauce was great as well. Will definitely come back!
google avatar

Annie Y.

Yelp
Most flavorful and tender chicken ever! I could eat a bucket of the rice, it's so fluffy and tasty. Even the side of soup that is just broth is also packed with flavor. Only thing I would ask for is more of the ginger scallion sauce
google avatar

Aree M.

Yelp
I absolutely love their Pad Thai and Thai Milk Iced Tea. One of the best Thai food I've ever had.
google avatar

Phylicia H.

Yelp
Dined inside the other day and ordered Set 1, and paid $2 extra to get the combo of boiled and fried chicken. The radish soup and ginger rice were both amazing. Chicken was very juicy and paired perfectly with the variety of sauces. Very clean facility inside. This was my second time eating boiled chicken and it is very different. Tender and juicy meat, but I prefer fried over boiled. I wasn't able to finish my food so got it in a to go box. Unfortunately, they do not have any sauces they can give you to go not even one. Also, it's a credit card minimum of $15. Thankfully they have Venmo and you can pay using the app! I plan on returning and trying their other dishes like curry and noodles.

Yelp
I used the Yelp reservation for a party of 4 on a weekend - we were all excited to try this spot. However upon arrival, we were told, loudly, that they don't take reservations. We've had issues getting a table in Philly for Friday and Saturday dinner, even for a party of 4, so we wouldn't have tried this place if we knew they didn't honor their Yelp reservation. They really need to remove that. The dining room is small, with tables on one side and a counter on the other. It was well lit and there was plenty of space to walk around. I appreciated not feeling cramped. The biggest issue was that it was 31 degrees F outside, with wind gusts of 21mph and there was no barrier between the tables and the door. This made for an extremely uncomfortable dinner as our food (rice, soup) went very cold, very quickly; and anytime someone would walk in and out of the restaurant, there would be a painful gust of wind. At one point, a large party (6 adults + 1 stroller) came to order take out, but they held the door open for several minutes. I was very disappointed that the staff didn't say anything to them about keeping the door closed. In a town that gets as cold as Philly, I'm really surprised they don't do more to keep the cold out. We ordered several Hainanese chicken sets along with the veggie medley dish. We got 3 boiled and 1 fried chicken set. To quote someone in my party, the fried chicken set tasted like a "better version of KFC, less oily." We wouldn't get it again. The boiled chicken tasted ok, but it really didn't stand out from actual Malaysian restaurants that served a full menu. They asked if we wanted chicken innards with the boiled chicken, and we confirmed and it turned out that it only came with 1 piece per set. The soup that came with the chicken set was pretty good, as was the ginger rice. The veggie medley was bland and either arrived cold, or the gusts of wind from the door cooled it down as it was set on our table. The service was friendly enough, but I don't think the staff really paid much attention to the floor. I understand it's a more take-out environment, but we did have to go up to the counter more than once to request things. Overall, it was a disappointing experience. The food was decent, but I've definitely had better in Philly. Add that to the limited menu, I'd definitely go elsewhere for my Hainanese chicken.

Yelp
One of my favorite spots to eat at in Chinatown Philly! This time I went and got takeout and ordered the chicken, with rice and soup on the side. The chicken was so crispy and juicy, so delicious. Their soup that it comes with is also one of my favorite. Highly recommend coming here for food if you want to grab something quick! Great food and service!

Yelp
Giving this spot a 5 star review to show support and to help keep it open! Quick, "staple" foods are always appreciated. For $15 you get a full meal of radish soup, chicken (boiled or fried, I got boiled), cucumbers, rice, and sauce. I found the ginger scallion a little too gingery for me but that's bc I don't love ginger as much. The rice was a good level of ginger for me. Chicken was good, the spicy Thai sauce worked well for me. So again, nothing outstanding here but it tastes and costs as it should.
