This is definitely one that I would ideally give a 3.5 to rather than the 4 I settled on...but it's trending up after my order this past Friday. The Circles chain is my gf's default Thai place because she finds their Pad Thai reliable and that and appetizers are mostly what she likes to order from Thai restaurants. I tend to order curries and never don't enjoy them, but also haven't tended to be blown away by them or to come come away with strong impressions one way or the other. It had settled into my view as a safe but unremarkable Thai spot.
Well we ordered with another couple over the weekend and I branched out of the "Curry" section of the menu to explore "Chef Alex Recommends." It's frankly loaded with a bunch of dishes I'm now curious about, from salmon and duck variations on Pad Thai to different curries. I opted for the Northern Kow Soi Curry and it was the best thing I've ever had from any Circles. It was an vibrant, orange-yellow sauce and the whole dish was brilliantly loaded with flavor. At the "Medium" spice level, there was a pleasant heat but nothing that walloped me on first bite or required any adjusting to dive into. In delivery form, it came as the whole braised chicken leg, edamame ravioli (!) pickled greens, onions, and crispy noodles in a main container, with the curry itself in a separate container to be poured on top. I ate it with a side of white rice. The dish would have been killer as just the chicken leg, rice, pickled greens, and curry sauce alone - it reminded me of the kind of thing that gets served in a lot of Southeast Asia as street or small restaurant food. The crispy noodles were fine, but the dish could lose them as long as you have rice on the side, IMO...maybe I'd have just preferred fewer. But then they added in those ravioli. I didn't know what to expect from Thai ravioli, but I turned out glad I had faith, because they elevated an already fantastic (and filling) dish to pretty rarefied air for me. The three or four that came with the order were a good size, wonderfully soft textured, and had just a hint of sweetness that worked nicely with the sharper flavors of the curry and greens. The dish is the reason I'm leaving this review and rounded up to 4 stars rather than down to 3.
Actually, the other new thing I ordered was pretty bad, which I guess shows that I value a great dish over a poor one in deciding my ratings. It also helped that the bad dish was an appetizer. But no way around it, the Crispy Tofu was as bland and unsatisfying as people who don't eat tofu are always assuming it's going to be. The portion size was good, but there was no way I had any interest in even coming close to finishing the little fried triangles - they were as flavorless as it gets, and the sweet chili sauce was in no way up to the task of making them interesting or enjoyable. Where apps are concerned, I think I'll be sticking with...well, just about any of the other items in the "Starters" menu, because most of the rolls, dumplings, satays, etc I've had over the years are good. But oh boy, I will be steering clear of that Crispy Tofu going forward.
My cumulative experiences with Circles have probably come out to just "above average" but after they knocked that Kow Soi Curry out of the park like on my latest order, I have a whole new reservoir of optimism about continuing to explore the menu that actually has me excited for my next Circles meal.
