Tourists Will Have To Pay €2 To See Rome's Trevi Fountain From Next Year
Included in a wider push to make select attractions free for residents, this ancient stadium is highlighted as one of the historical sights that locals will be able to visit without paying, underscoring its role as a significant but everyday-accessible monument for people living in the city. - Annie McNamee
From the Aventine slope you look down into the old Vallis Murcia, a long shallow trench where stone terraces once stacked something like two hundred thousand people for races and festivals. The line of via dei Cerchi traces the outer curve of the cavea; inside, the grassed basin covers drainage works that first made this marshy valley usable and still keep it stable for crowds. Somewhere along the central spine stood shrines and imported obelisks that turned laps and victories into moving propaganda. Today the same hollow is wired for stages, screens and sound systems, so that nearly two thousand years after the last imperial races the city still summons bodies into this valley whenever it needs a spectacular public audience.

As a Roman Empire fanatic this was one of my favorite spots in Rome. Imagining it all built up and connected to the palace. Take a walk down here if you are already visiting the Colosseum and Roman Forum. Not crowded at all, seemingly overlooked spot to check out. If you know a bit about this area it is breathtaking to see in person!

Free to visit. We didn't see the point paying for a tour experience. Surrounding ding area is impressive and one only needs to watch Ben-Hur to imagine the significance and history of this location.

It is a truly remarkable ancient structure, showcasing incredible engineering prowess for its time. The sheer scale of this historical site is awe-inspiring and provides a vivid glimpse into the past. Imagining the spectacles that once unfolded here truly sparks the imagination. Visiting this place offers a profound connection to history and the people who came before us. It is an essential stop for anyone interested in the grandeur of the Roman Empire.

The Circus Maximus in Rome is a truly magical place. Standing there today, it’s fascinating to imagine how it must have looked 2,000 years ago — the thunder of hooves, the speed of chariots, and the roar of the crowd. From Augustus’ palace on the Palatine Hill, Rome’s nobility once enjoyed a spectacular view of these thrilling races. I highly recommend visiting this historic site!

A really interesting spot with so much history. It’s impressive to see the scale of it in person, and it’s a nice place for a relaxed walk while taking in ancient Rome. Worth a visit if you’re nearby.

This was another event that a private tour would have been helpful. From what I could see at a distance, it looked quite historical and interesting. It was totally overcrowded although there was plenty of land to roam. It was quite a long walk with hilly terrain.
