Try the Bombay Sapphire Sparkling Lemon at These 10 New Jersey Bars | Eater

"It’s summer, so you want — no, you need — a rooftop bar. Hoboken’s three-story City Bistro has you covered with a patio for good-weather socializing and dog-friendly relaxation if you arrive early enough to snag the first-come, first-serve outdoor seating. Vegetarians take note that the veggie patty here is above par, while everyone will want to sample the thin-crust pizza. You can get a New York slice most anywhere else, so lean into the idiosyncrasy. If you’re further looking for the standouts you won’t find elsewhere, grab a Johnny sandwich (chicken cutlet with provolone, banana peppers, and balsamic dressing). Steadfast folks will otherwise find a mix of pizza and pasta with some American classics like steak and burgers. While we’d never dissuade you from a Friday night rooftop, the Monday night dining deals make City Bistro a great way to start your week with Friday vibes." - Brendan McGinley

I really wanted to like this place — the menu looked promising, with a good variety of burgers and pizza. But unfortunately, my experience was disappointing. The food took a while, and when it finally arrived, I found a hair in my meal. Accidents happen, but it definitely ruined my appetite. The staff was polite when I brought it up, but there wasn’t much effort to make it right beyond a quick apology. Atmosphere is nice and the menu has potential, but hygiene and attention to detail need serious improvement. Probably won’t be returning anytime soon.

Google
Service was cool, the food was delicious, the music wasn't really for us but not a deal breaker. We ordered the pulled pork sandwich and the brisket sandwich. We ate on the rooftop which was a bit smaller than I thought but it was still very nice. My husband got beef tacos for an appetizer and they were so good! I say that because I normally don't care for steak tacos but they thin sliced the steak which was golden!

Google
Went here on a whim one night. We sat at the bar. Good cocktails and food. It was a bit odd I thought that there were like 3 different menus. But the food was yummy.

Google
Our server blew her nose in front of us and tried to serve us our food without washing her hands. Absolutely disgusting. I will never come back here. We asked to speak to a manager and the front hosts advised us that no managers were available.

Google
Amazing food and great service. Been here few times and each time we like this place. They have great drinks and their cucumber margarita is the best! Their crispy French toast and pancakes are amazing! It has a good chilled vibes, servers are friendly. Good place for gatherings and Sunday brunch.

Google
Seriously awesome brunch/lounge/Dinner spot.. I love the food and cocktails 🍹 Menu.. it’s a perfect spot in summers and also winters.. they have beautiful and classy holiday decor.. I would highly recommend the dirty chai (10/10) and mushroom flatbread !! Loved the veggie burgers too..

Google
I absolutely love this place. This is a great place for a first date, girls night out, or just somewhere to go after work for some drinks. I have eaten here multiple times and every time the food has been amazing. The salmon dish is to die for. My fiancé had the pasta which was also delicious. We would definitely return again and Again.

Google
I held my engagement party at City Bistro and was amazed with the food, drinks and service! The pricing was also very reasonable compared to some other quotes and I highly recommend for any large group events.

Joely M.

Yelp
Hosted a private party on the rooftop and coordinated directly with Ashleigh and it was seamless. Food, service, and vibes were great and would highly recommend for a private event!

Yelp
Great place for a mom's lunch!! They were soo sweet and accommodating with 9 strollers and 10 babies. Everyone enjoyed their burgers and beer/wine. Add it to the list of baby friendly lunch spots! Also I hear they have half off the burger happy hour on Mondays. Also had the calamari and tuna app and fries. All good!

Yelp
The bartenders upstairs on the roof are so rude. I asked for a high noon in a specific flavor and she said that I'd get whatever she pulls out. For my final high noon order when I closed out, she gave me a surf side and immediately opened it up before I could tell her it's wrong. Every time you ask for something, they make you feel like you're doing something wrong. You shouldn't be working in the service industry if you hate providing service...

Yelp
I had not been to City Bistro in a long time. We went today for brunch and sat on the rooftop. I enjoyed the experience. I had scrambled eggs and bacon with potatoes and a lemonade. My husband had a similar dish. The food was very good, the ambiance very nice. My only complaints were they charged my husband for a refill on his coffee which I thought was odd. Also I would have liked to have seen a mocktail menu. All in all it was good and I would go back.

Yelp
The food was good but the server was not the best. I'll give it another chance but I won't rush to go.

Yelp
Rooftop bar in Hoboken is where it's at! Can't beat it on a warm summer day. The food looked good, but I come here for the ambiance and party!

Yelp
City bistro is great place to hangout in uptown Hoboken - great service, nice ambience, good selection of beer, cocktails and food. Indoor is a bit dark but in summers they have front patio as well as rooftop seating. We went on a Saturday afternoon recently and sat on the rooftop. There are 2 sections on rooftop one with bar seating, benches and DJ station and other section in front with tables and a small bar. We sat in the front section, ordered few cocktails, beers and a pizza to share. Really enjoyed our time there.

Yelp
Top line: I would not recommend this place over all the other options in Hoboken especially for a special occasion. On a warm Saturday night in Hoboken, it was my friends birthday so we were looking at all of the great restaurant options and chose City Bistro to celebrate! It was a beautiful night but there were no tables outside so we had to sit inside - this is where it went downhill. This outing proved a bad server can really ruin your experience. Our server was so soft spoken it was impossible to hear her - I'm sorry to say but if you're shy, I feel like serving on a busy Saturday night in Hoboken is not for you. She just seemed really confused the entire time by everything we were ordering and kept disappearing so we couldn't order more. Then the food took forever so we were a little concerned if she even put in our order at all. When the food did come out, it was delicious. The tacos and the fried burrata were really good. We ordered some apps but they were so small we wish we would've ordered more. I mean 2 bao buns for a party of 6?? As a server I would let my table know the portion is small and suggest they order multiple orders if they all want to try. Then out of nowhere, without us asking she came out with the check. We had just seen another server come out with a sparkler dessert a few minutes before and we wanted that for my friends bday but then our server says we can't because the kitchen is closed! Again as a server, wouldn't you want to run up your check and ask us if we want to put anything else in before the kitchen closes? We were there for 2hrs (trying) to spend lots of money so she had plenty of time to give us a heads up, just seems like she was fumbling a bag here. Overall, the food was pretty good but the service made me question if I would ever return.

Yelp
Food was excellent! Rigatoni vodka was very good . Light with a little kick of heat. Very good and great portion for the money . Service was excellent .

Yelp
The service was really nice and helpful. It has a cute little rooftop along with good cocktails. A really nice spot to catch up with friends!

Yelp
I used to go to City Bistro frequently and they had consistently good food. That may still be the case, but I'll never know because at some point in 2024, CB changed its menu... kind of. Basically the same food with fancier names and descriptions, but MUCH more expensive. Hey, it's a Hoboken bistro not a Michelin star restaurant and I won't pay NYC prices for a hamburger I can get for a real-world price a block away.
google avatar

Corina G.

Yelp
Big fan of this place! Cute, casual, no muss, no fuss. I've generally come here without a reservation and usually get seated in the rooftop area, sometimes with just one friend and sometimes with a larger party. I've ordered a bunch of different dishes and drinks. The cuisine is casual American, and most of the items have been pretty solid. Service has been fine. No complaints and I will definitely be back!

Yelp
I love the food here, the crunchy French toast was delicious and soft unlike the normal crispy French toast. The service was good. Server came on time however it's a Sunday and they were packed. Firecracker shrimp tasted delicious Our mimosas didn't taste that great - it was flat but the espresso martini was great We also had an omelette

Yelp
Had been here for a friends birthday previously and got steak and eggs, the steak was overcooked so I sent it back and received an equally overcooked piece of meat. Went yesterday for lunch but had zero appealing options on the brunch menu so opted for drinks. Frozen peach margarita literally tasted like fabuloso. Plastic cup, no garnish, $37 for two drinks like that. This is why I stay in Jersey City. It's always places that overcharge that have the worst quality. $20 for wings, nah.
google avatar

Yelp
I had to bump up my rating after brining the kids around for brunch. I honestly did not expect this to be a good venue for eating with kids. I was wrong! The pizza was so good and they literally ate it up. Same for the sliders and fries. To be clear, they ate the pepperoni pizza. The adults enjoyed the mushroom pizza. I had the Johnny sandwich. It was stellar. The mix of balsamic vinegar and long hot peppers made the chicken cutlets exciting. It tasted just as great leftover. (I ate half and brought the other half home). Even my picky dad enjoyed his eggs and home fries. Very glad we chose to eat here.

Yelp
I keep coming back here and I kid you not, if they had a rewards program for this place, I'd be top tier by now LOL. I always come back here because the food portions are so good and everything about this place makes me want to come back. I had the old world pizza and you think it's a small portion, but I was FULL. The crust was super crunchy, cheesy to the right taste, and a nice thin pizza to savor all the qualities and flavors of cheese and basil and garlic. A hint of cracked black pepper was the perfect touch. The waiter super super nice and made sure we were taken care of perfectly. We went for an early lunch around 12pm and it was nice, quiet, and intimate. 10/10 recommend and can't wait to come back here again and try more of their items!

Yelp
I came here for brunch on a weekend to meet some friends. We came mostly for the rooftop outdoor space which was small but had a nice breeze which was needed especially on a hot day. I wouldn't say the food was bad but it wasn't anything special either. We asked to have our potatoes crispy but they just came out soft yet well seasoned. The Benedict was fine. Probably could have used more sauce though. The drinks seemed pretty watered down and came in plastic cups which seemed weird? Nothing else came in plastic ‍ The service was pretty good and the waitress was genuinely apologetic that the potatoes weren't crispy at all.

Yelp
Here's the deal : Very nice bistro on 14th street a block of so away from the waterfront. The place has a great variety of different dining experiences. Bottom floor has inside & outside seating! The roof top has 2 sections. One side more of a active bar scene , the other is a place for dinner tables. Perfect place to go to if you're looking for outdoor dining on a nice day. Also great bunch spot !!

Yelp
Stopped for a quick brunch and was pleasantly surprised! The vegetarian burger was quite scrumptious, and the pancakes were fluffy and warm. Quick and friendly service with a light airy ambiance on a weekday morning. Def worth a visit if you're looking for a cosy brunch spot in Hoboken.
google avatar

Yelp
My first time here and I liked this place. This place has a nice rooftop, good vibes, and good service. The veggie burger was amazing !!! Oh yes the Paloma was good too. I would come back.

Christie B.

Yelp
My friends and I came to this restaurant on a Sunday evening and had a wonderful time! The staff is so accommodating and helpful! We were seated on the rooftop and stayed for a very long time enjoying drinks and delicious appetizers. The food and drinks were amazing! The views are beautiful, the staff is extremely attentive and accommodating. I would absolutely recommend this restaurant!
google avatar

Zamaan R.

Yelp
Very pleasant experience. My wife and I had brunch upstairs on their rooftop. It wasn't too crowded, which was perfect for us. The food was delicious, although it took longer than expected for it to come out, especially since it wasn't that crowded. We would go back.

Yelp
Food not good at all Service was fine Ambience was fine for brunch. Probably better for dinner

Yelp
One fine Sunday my fiancé and I decided to double date at City Bistro. I was so excited, when scrolling through the pictures online, but was so disappointed when we drove around for almost 40 minutes looking for parking. Finally we headed in a little late to our reservation. We ordered the Huevos Rancheros (delicious and great for the gram), Crunchy French Toast, (super yummy, but noticed that there was no consistency when its being brought out to customers - everyone had their order decorated differently), Grilled Skirt Steak & Two Eggs, and 2 Eggs Platter everything was delicious. I would definitely come back and try out more from their brunch menu. Overall the service in the establishment was a bit slow, but the food really spoke for itself.
google avatar

Uzma K.

Yelp
This place was really good. I came out for brunch with my girls! They have rooftop seating by the bar upstairs but when we went it was raining but food was enjoyable. We were also able to find parking nearby. Great little spot for brunch and I'm sure even nicer upstairs when it's not raining. Prices were decent and the huevos rancheros just had a littttttle tooo much cheese for my liking but I ate every bite! Ahah

Yelp
Came here really late on a Friday night and had some pretty good cocktails downstairs as well as their pizza which was more of a Mediterranean style but that was what I was ordering. I also had their meatballs and a few appetizers. I genuinely thought the food was really good and was pleased with it I also thought the service was really good considering how busy it was. We then went upstairs to enjoy the view it and the cocktails as well which were also really good will definitely go back it's a great location for uptown.
google avatar

Yelp
I have been coming to this place for brunch for a while now, they never cease to amaze us. Always amazing service & even better food. Will definitely be coming back for more!

Yelp
Had read of some pretty poor experiences at City Bistro, and on the occasions we stopped by in the summer, it was packed, loud and all staff looked stressed and overworked. We didn't stay. So, roll on early fall on a Saturday late afternoon, and the roof was a pleasant temperature, tables were open, staff were excellent - well informed, able to advise, prompt and gracious in service, and food was a good standard.

Yelp
My boyfriend made a reservation to go eat at City Bistro. I was super excited because i been wanting to try it for a long time now. They have a rooftop but the rooftop was close, and outdoor seating. We sat indoors because it was cold outside. The food was great and the drinks were great. For appetizers we had the BBQ wings and for drinks my boyfriend had the Firestone beer. I had the first snow cocktail which had vodka, grapefruit juice, lemon juice and Prosecco. If you like the taste of grapefruit like i do, I recommend this cocktail for sure. It would run you about $12. Okay now let's talk about food. We had the prosciutto and arugula pizza which was absolutely Divine!! Omg my mouth is getting watery just by thinking about it. This is a must!! And the penne bolognese was delicious too. The amount they served was so generous i was able to take some leftovers home. To finish it off we had a Guinness and some shots!

I. L.

Yelp
Knocking my original review down to 4 stars because the last time we went, we had to eat on the roof because we didn't make reservations. That's fine, as the food is the same, but the Bloody Mary is half the size, served in a tiny plastic cup when they have regular-sized plastic cups at the bar (you can see them from where you sit) that are roughly the same size as the ones you get downstairs in actual glasses. I understand the policy for serving w/plastic on the rooftop but when you charge $10 for a Bloody Mary, you better serve it in a reasonably-sized cup, not one that's half the size as what you get downstairs!

Johnny B.

Yelp
37 dollars for an airplane quality Cesar Salad and one club soda and a Diet Coke. Save your money and never go here.

Yelp
First off, City Bistro is (in normal times) a great drinking spot. The rooftop is always a great time especially in warm weather (although I must admit the TV management could be improved by making sure the best games are playing, but that's a personal issue that I can get over). Id argue it's the best happy hour spot in the city. I've been here to eat twice now, first time for dinner on a whim and most recently brunch. I've been pleasantly surprised both times. Brunch with a friend this weekend was excellent. He ordered the French toast which was soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside thanks to the cornflakes. I opted for the burger and it was excellent. I like a classic burger and that's exactly what this was. Brioche bun, shredded lettuce, red onion, juicy tomato, melted cheese, and a pickle spear as the proverbial cherry on top. Sweet potato fries were above average too. We also put down a few mimosas a piece because, well, brunch. I can confidently say that City Bistro has one of the better burgers in Hoboken.
google avatar

Laura T.

Yelp
Came here on a Monday night for some burgers since there were some mentions from previous Yelp reviews that the burgers were good. It was around 4:30 and not busy. Service was good. I have to agree. I had the Chimichurri burger and my husband had the Bistro burger. Both were delicious BUT I wish the chimichurri burger had some chimichurri. :( It wasn't in the description but it's in the name of the burger! My husband thought the Bistro burger was also very good - just wished it had more Bistro sauce. Fries were thin cut fries and came out hot and nicely cooked. We also had the special tartufo - which had pistaschio ice cream and was very good. My husband order Strawberry Fields Forever cocktail which was very strong and needed a touch more sweetness. So overall, a good experience and we would definitely come back since we live close by. A few tweaks and we would be happy to give 5 stars.

Yelp
City Bistro is definitely one of my local favorites. The staff has always been fantastic whether I'm coming by for brunch or for a late dinner. Being that it is in Hoboken, parking can sometimes be tricky so make sure to come with enough time if you are trying to meet at a specific time at City Bistro. My easily go to's are the pasta entrees (they tend to rotate the options), burger and wings. They of course have other options but you can never go wrong with these picks. Currently, they have an outdoor seating area, indoor seating area and rooftop. No matter where you sit, they will definitely take care of your every request. Drinks have always been pretty good. Their environment is definitely a great one for meeting with friends for a good time with drinks and food!
google avatar

Kelly V.

Yelp
Food and service were great but I'm removing a star because their $10 mimosas are mostly juice. (That price covers the Wycliffe bottle) City bistro has a nice vibe and is children friendly. I'd come back again now knowing what to expect.

Yelp
This is one of the first places that I visited during the pandemic and I should have known better than to order seafood for my entrée. We came here on a Sunday to celebrate one of my sorority kids birthday and sat in their rooftop. The area was clean and they offered a virtual menu that you used your phone to pull up which I thought was great! For entrees, everyone got something different that included the hanger steak with eggs, a classic burger and I got the salmon ceasar salad. The group was happy with the steak as it was cooked as they asked and the burger had great flavor. I managed to steal a fry and it was pretty good. As far as my entrée, I knew I should have sent it back on appearance alone but I was starving! The salmon was overcooked and I ended up getting food poisoning. I definitely regret not sending it back and would highly recommend no seafood be ordered from this establishment as it is not fresh. Overall the drinks were good but I would more than likely not return to this establishment.

Lucene N.

Yelp
I made reservations a week ago and told them it was for a bday celebration. When we arrived they didn't have a table ready for us and then tried to squeeze 5 people at a small table for 4. Again I reminded the waiter that we were celebrating a bday. Dinner and drinks were good. At the end of the dinner he brought the check we had to find him to once again let him know we are celebrating a bday he said he forgot and then brought out a piece of cake with a candle along with a separate check for the cake! Also tip is included in check no matter the party size

Yelp
Stopped in this weekend for brunch. Some comments on the food below, but the service was disappointing. Started off getting my wife's drink order wrong, dropped the food off without silverware and didn't check on us for a while, but perhaps the most surprising was our 1-year old's grilled cheese one side was the final slice / end of the loaf of bread. What restaurant does that? I personally had the huevos rancheros, too much cheese and not enough tortilla. Decent, not great.
google avatar

Prianka S.

Yelp
This restaurant is a great place to come to with a group of friends for drinks and to enjoy the ambiance. Personally I thought the food was average, not bad but nothing special. I got the Johnny sandwich for brunch and it was just okay, I liked the salad more that came with it. They have a nice drink selection and I loved the rooftop. One thing to note though is that they definitely were not following social distancing guidelines for COVID. The tables were really close to one another. Would definitely come back here after the pandemic.
google avatar

Jasmine M.

Yelp
I walked in I got a table right away, however, the server was not friendly and she only came back to the table with 2 mimosas when we ordered four. The service was not all that great. Overall, there was not a good brunch vibe, there was no music. It was hard for me to see the waitress throughout our meals. I was somewhat disappointed considering that it was brunch time. It may have seemed like they may have been short staffed. The steak was very small and there seems to have been cross-contamination because I didn't order onions and peppers and there was onions and peppers on my plate. They had no grape jelly which is my favorite but overall the food was alright it was good nothing too special. Brunch is also $10 per glass most brunch places I've been to they offer a pitcher or something of some sort but it's $10 for every glass of mimosa so be aware when you start feeling nice and start going crazy ordering mimosas. People were allowed to bring their dogs and their kids . So it seems more of a older/family chill spot then a spot to chill with friends and have fun. It's hard to get lit here so
google avatar

Judy P.

Yelp
Foodie Judy here! What you see here is my salad right at the start of the meal! But Judy, there's only one crouton in the photo, how can that be? I know y'all!!!!! In my whole salad I got one and half croutons!! Sad!!!!!!!! Second, the salad tasted too much like our friend Flounder for Judy's liking. Now I know I know Caesar dressing has anchovies but Judy usually likes it!! But this one? I swear it was like I was eating lettuce that's been used to wipe a piece of salmon down after she's had a nice sauna and then after that, got used as a decor under a piece of salmon. Too fishy for Judy :-----(

Yelp
Went here on a Saturday night with my husband and was able to get seated at the Roof top. Great vibe, young crowd with a mix of diners as well as a bar and party crowd. Our server, Emily, came over right away and we knew immediately we were in good hands. She made great recommendations. The prosciutto, fig and goat cheese flatbread was delicious. Also got the Roasted Shishito peppers. My chimichurri burger was very good and cooked just like I wanted. My husband had the braised balsamic chicken and it was just alright. Emily was very personable and we enjoyed speaking with her and hope to see her on the stage singing in the future.

Yelp
We came here yesterday to have a light lunch before heading to the pier for a dinner cruise we booked....I'm from NY and would come back here just to have the "Old World" pizza...me and my husband kept taking bite after bite and saying wow this is one hell of a delicious pizza...from the crunch and seasoning of the dough, to the creaminess of the sauce and cheese & of course the fresh garlic & pepper, overall this was a perfect pizza
google avatar

Yelp
Finally came back to try the dinner because of their Monday night half off the entire menu all night special. To start, we had the pork/veal meatballs. These were AMAZING. I think they might even be the best meatballs I've had in Hoboken. It came with a perfectly grilled/toasted piece of bread that was perfect for sopping up all the sauce. Next, we ordered four crostinis. We thought they would be small, but this really came out to eight pieces. We had the Steak (goat cheese, chimichurri), two of the Wild Mushroom (pesto, burrata) and Ricotta (honey, truffle oil, pine nuts). All of the toppings were good, but the bread was not. It was a thick piece of bread that wasn't even toasted. It felt more like a little sandwich than a crostini. I wish they used the bread from the meatballs instead. My favorite was the ricotta, which I did not expect to like as much as I did. For the entree, I went with the Sweet Sausage Pizza (broccoli rabe, red onions, garlic olive oil, chili flakes, mozzarella). This was very meh. The crust was too thick and chewy for my liking. So it seems like anything that involves bread, isn't too great. But I definitely don't mind coming back to try some of their pastas and apps (and of course the pork/veal meatballs) Tip - only catch to half off Mondays is that they automatically include a 20% gratuity pre-discount to your bill. Still pretty worth it though.

Yelp
First time at City Bistro. I went for brunch. It was 4 people so we ordered a little of everything. I had the wings and a salad both were good and everyone else said their dishes were good such a the avocado toast and their was another dish with shrimp all in all everyone was please with the food. The drinks were ok. What the don't tell you is that when you are on the rooftop some drink aren't available so there is a separate drink menu downstairs which I didn't like because I was limited also the stairs is a bit much so they should definitely have accommodations if you want to order something from the other menu. They also have this cute back drop of sunflowers picture worthy.
google avatar

Katie A.

Yelp
A little underwhelming. Food - we ordered the grilled chicken sandwich and the grilled Skirt steak & eggs. I liked the grilled chicken sandwich, only downside was that the chicken was a little burnt. It came with a large side of fries. The grilled Skirt steak was over cooked so it was hard fo eat. Drinks - I was so excited about the $4 brunch cocktails (mimosas, Bellinis, bloody Mary's) but my Bellini literally just tasted like juice. You can't convince me that there was any alcohol in it. I decided to order one of the signature brunch cocktails after that ($10). I originally ordered the Sunday Runner (I can't resist a rum drink) but they said they were out? Bummer. I settled for the City Mosa, which was fine. Service - our server was very sweet and checked on us throughout the meal. I think I'll give City Bistro another try because I do want to check out their rooftop this summer, but I think there are better brunch spots in Hoboken.

Yelp
cute spot in Hoboken. great for brunch and cocktails. They have a nice roof top area which makes for a great day drink spot.

Grace R.

Yelp
We were seated indoors in the second floor and I'm not sure if it was because of its location but it was pretty difficult to contact our waitress throughout the meal. I had the Johnny sandwich which I thought was pretty good, but the sandwich itself was pretty small. Most of the plate was a salad with a vinaigrette type dressing. The prices were decently fair (my sandwich was $12 if I remember correctly). Would have given 5 stars if the service was better, but I would probably come back in the future maybe when the weather is nice to appreciate the outdoor seating!
