"Situated on the cobblestone streets of Raleigh’s City Market, the sushi joint of the same name gives off a sultry, downtown vibe — not to mention a menu that packs a punch. The maguro tataki or crispy pork belly are a great place to start. Continue through the menu with a specialty roll like the Ultimate Rainbow, or go all out with a ten-piece nigiri plate for $56. When dining on a weekend, be sure to make a reservation on City Market’s website to avoid a possible two-hour wait." - Catherine Currin

Probably the best upscale sushi menu in the triangle. Quality of fish is top notch. Service is incredible and food delivery is pretty darn quick. This style allows customers to order one or two things at a time. The restaurant itself is a little cramped and uncomfortable in space and chairs.

Not a lot of gluten free vegan options to be had here. However, the manager and her staff were all phenomenally knowledgeable about their offerings. They were able to make the garlic edamame appetizer gluten free for us but swapping Tamari for the soy sauce. My husband and I both agreed that this was, by far, the best edamame appetizer we've ever had. The Green sushi roll was made gluten free for me as well by swapping out the sauce the tofu is usually tossed in for a side of Tamari to dip the sushi in. I love that the tofu pieces were rolled in cornstarch for a light crunch and served on top of the sushi with some delicious microgreens. We've been having a difficult time finding some good sushi/Asian food that can be made both gluten free and vegan and this place certainly hit the mark. Definitely one of the best well hidden gems in the area we have yet to find! Only wish they would offer one or 2 more things gluten free and vegan ah that I could have a bit more of a choice. That would give them 5 stars.

Google
I consider city market sushi one of the best sushi places in Raleigh. I took away 1 star because they used to have the best calamari that I’ve ever had, but recently I tried it and it was very dry and tasted frozen. I was disappointed in the reduced quality of the calamari, but the sushi still tasted the same as before.

Google
One of the better sushi spots around. The nigiri and sushi roll we ordered were on point. The house salad could use some work -- the ginger dressing is thin, store bought, not the big clump of house ground ginger dressing that I was hoping for (might be better if asked for extra dressing; avocado was a nice touch though. Spring leaves over iceberg is fine but would be better chopped a bit, felt like an italian salad). Miso was good as well. Mochi ice cream for dessert -- mango by far the best flavor. Will come back here for sushi again.

Some of the best sushi I've had since moving to Raleigh. Some pretty unique rolls, not your typical sushi. Everything was good and the fish was really high quality. Bit on the pricey side but well worth it.

Google
This is my go to for Sushi in Raleigh. The food never disappoints, and the service is always great. Really can’t ask for much else!

Google
When we are in town this place is a must go! Perfect place for a date if you are in the mood for some sushi. I would recommend the kamikaze roll, and try the matcha beer and sake!

Menu is fairly limited but EVERYTHING is wonderful! Our go-to for sushi in the Raleigh area

Yelp
Wow, we had an incredible experience. City Market Sushi is located downtown with a small, intimate setting. We were greeted upon entering, and experienced quick, professional service throughout our time there. We ordered the pork belly and maguro tataki. Both were delicious, though the tataki's service size was not too large. We then ordered six sushi rolls- every single one of the specialty sushi rolls we ordered were out of this world. The fish's texture and flavors were perfect, and the combinations of flavors in the rolls were superb. Their presentations were also pretty. Overall, the only negative in our experience was that the prices were not great considering that the portions were not very large. However, everything tasted ridiculously good so I'd argue that the experience was worth the price. Can't wait to come back here.

Raul V.

Yelp
Not your normal sushi place. The rolls they offer are unique. Great food experience. I went there for my wife's birthday dinner. Reservation made on line. Had to change it and the lady handling this called me. She was very polite and helpful. Cozy and very clean.

Yelp
TLDR: Amazing sushi, service, and ambiance. The parking makes my head go bald but just plan accordingly. Nice atmosphere! We placed a RSVP for 7:30pm on a Saturday night - roughly two hours before the time and was able to get the slot. Place was PACKED but they got our orders out asap so we only spent 30 mins max in there. Food: Sushi was PHENOMENAL. We hork everything down (from the ginger to the wasabi. ). The fish tasted fresh too. Everything was delicious so I would give this place 5/5. IF we are to compare across other sushi restaurants in Raleigh area - I would say it's around 3.5 or 4. Parking: Not a fan of Downtown parking but we were able to find a bunch of spots around the area (to be fair it was raining sooo...plan accordingly).

Yelp
Had such a wonderful dinner ! Had crunchy tofu and yellowtail as appetizer which were delicious! We got 2 specialty rolls which were also spot on- the mad salmon was just the right recipe! Service was attentive and the ambiance is great for quiet evening out -the dessert matcha green tea crème brûlée was soo good! Affogato was good too- not something we often see in a Japanese restaurant!

Mason R.

Yelp
Came in for a couple rolls as an early dinner and I was pleasantly surprised! City Market Sushi offers a variety of speciality rolls that are sure to please your taste buds. The ambiance is refined, with both table and bar seating, dim lighting, and bartenders at the ready to make your favorite cocktail. The menu has a wide variety of food and a great sushi selection. I opted for the Crazy Monkey and Spicy Hamachi rolls and both were great. Their spin on the monkey roll is panko crust, whereas other restaurants might use another form of crust or flaked to coat it. It was also served warm. Really good. The spicy hamachi is a cold roll and the flavors and texture were great. Neither roll needed any added soy sauce. Very good spot for a date night or anytime you're craving sushi.

Ashlyn M.

Yelp
Food and service were great. There is limited seating so recommend calling ahead or making reservations. We had the crispy pork belly a few years ago and loved it - still good but seems they changed the recipe some and it's a little salty. Wish the pork belly came with more wasabi aioli. Spicy tuna dynamite, kamikaze, and bang bang rolls were our favorites. The panko scallop was good but not much flavor compared to the others.

Georgie H.

Yelp
City Market is a whole vibe. Fish is fresh, and perfect for a date night! Service is very friendly as well.

Dina L.

Yelp
Don't sleep on City Market Sushi! I was craving a salmon roll and the Mad salmon roll didn't disappoint. It's beautiful looking and absolutely delish! Of course I got my standard salmon nigiri. Also yum. The house salad was not the usual lettuce and dressing. So fresh and flavorful with cucumbers and crunchy garlic. I finished it. Parking is a little tough on Blake st but visit anyway. The staff is so friendly and accommodating. I'll be back

Jon V.

Yelp
Amazing night at City Market Sushi. We're new to the area and we were brought here by our awesome friends (Christine and Tess). The service was perfect, the pace was smooth, and everything tasted great. We met the manager Jessie who is so sweet and accommodating as well. Cozy ambiance and great mood music added positivity to the experience. Can't wait to come back!

Janet C.

Yelp
This place has fantastically fresh sushi. We shy aware from going to downtown Raleigh but the place is worth finding parking for. Love the panko scallop roll, amazing. Nice decor and excellent service. Get a reservation and go!

Juliana K.

Yelp
Delicious food and great service. So glad to have a cute spot like this in the area. Ambiance is warm and welcoming too.

Yelp
Was Downton Raleigh for a meeting at the City Club and was in the mood for sushi... been to a few in the area but havent been to city market sushi.. so decided to give it a try .. and definitely glad I did. City Market Sushi has a cool dark cozy intimate vibe to it and not like a typical sushi restaurant so that was good ... Menu is smaller than other places which isnt bad .. So to start dinner off I ordered garlic edamame roasted in a garlic soy with garlic chips.. comes out delicious and warm.. right amount of saltiness and a lil heat but not much .. very good started and one of the best edamame dishes I've had. Next up was the Mad salmon which is a spicy tuna, avocado wrapped in soy paper... with spicy salmon, wasabi aioli, jalapeno on top. Very delicious and refreshing .. Next up was the kamikaze.. it was tuna, salmon, crab, avocado rolled and tempura fried topped with sriracha aioli, tobiko, eel sauce. Wasnt bad but wasnt the best version I have had .. the tempura almost gave it a toast taste .. The ultimate rainbow  which has snow crab, avocado, cucumber wrapped in soy paper and each portion was topped with either tuna, salmon, yellowtail, red snapper, scallop, or shrimp, and topped with wasabi yuzu.. probably my favorite roll out of the 3 options I had .. the best part was that since each portion was topped with a different seafood .. it made it feel like 6 different types of sushi .. definitely would order this again . To finish it off was the green tea crème brûlée.. this was a perfect dessert.. not to sweet with subtle green tea taste and the creaminess of the creme and the crunch of the brulee top. So bonus points for City Market Sushi because they use real fresh wasabi unlike other places which uses the powdered paste in a tube.. you can definitely tell the difference.. So definitely would recommend this place for a nice cozy place for sushi .

Yelp
The first that was noticeable once you went in was the server. They were close to closing time and they were just genuine and amazing. The setting inside was nice and gave enough space in between other tables. The lighting they had fit well since we got there at night. The sushi was pretty good and worth a try if you want to talk a short walk from the Sheraton. The edamame was pretty good as well but and have a kick to it. Definitely recommend to walk as parking is not ideal. Close to other venues if you decide to go out after.

Amber Marie C.

Yelp
This place is absolutely incredible! We were sat right away at a nice side 4 top table under a date night vibe light fixture, the restaurant is on the darker side without being *too* dark where you feel like you can't read your menu. Our server greeted us immediately after being seated and brought our drinks out right after we ordered them. We started off with the gyoza and calamari - both were incredibly well made and clearly fresh ingredients. We got a roll each to start, I got the Spicy Hamachi roll, sans avocado even though I love it but I'm allergic, the server made sure to be clear about the allergy to the sushi chef which was much appreciated! My fiancé got the Unagi Dragon roll, each served with a side of ginger and REAL wasabi, both of them were beyond amazing - we are seriously so impressed by this place! It is quite literally the best sushi we've ever had and we've had A LOT. We were still a little bit hungry after finishing the rolls so we decided to split a Boom Boom Shrimp roll, I didn't think the sushi could get much better, but this was it! Everything that came out was even better than the first. Everything was so delicious and impressive, we will definitely be back!

Molly G. Y.

Yelp
Sushi was good, service was so-so. I wish they had a menu that was clear on items that they can make GF. It makes it risky when ordering with a server and them not being sure. They did have GF soy sauce which was great, but even items like a side salad could not be made GF.

Tiffany D.

Yelp
Came here with a large group for dinner. The place is very small, so reservations are key. We tried a variety of sakes, rolls and appetizers. I thought it was in a good location, the sushi really had no flavor to me, and that was a general consensus. Nothing terrible, nothing great. The wait staff was nice. The edamame was the best thing we tried. It's a solid 3.5/5

Josh M.

Yelp
The sushi slapped and the sake sank quickly, delicious as it was and thirsty as I were. Rolls and sashimi both delivered. I would go back. No... I shall go back. This I vow to you, Yelp reader.

Audrey P.

Yelp
Cool ambiance. Unique and delicious specialty sushi rolls. Japanese beers, including a matcha IPA, which was . In the cute City Market district. Will definitely go back!

Dani W.

Yelp
I went here for the first time today. We ordered the garlic edamame and shrimp tempura as our appetizers. Both of these were great but the entrees were the stars! The chirashi box is to die for, and the sashimi in general. We ordered a few rolls too and they were all very good too, but the sashimi and chirashi were amazing. I had the Suntory high ball and a Suntory on the rocks to drink. Perfect dinner! Can't wait to go back!

Nicole M.

Yelp
This place rocks! I've been twice already and each time it's a hit. Only downside: such a small place and they really only take reservations. My fiancé and I found this place as an accident one night walking around Downtown. As walk-ins we waited about an hour 15 minutes for a table. We ended up at the bar which is not always ideal but we were starving. The food make everything WORTH it. The calamari was large and fried so well. The rolls we had were delicious and we cleaned all of our plates. I am allergic to shellfish so unfortunately there are only 3 rolls I can get on the menu but that's not stopping me from coming back! 2nd time I went with my best friend, got a different roll and tried the lychee sake. So good!

Leann A.

Yelp
Took myself on a date here while waiting on call for a birth. It was incredible! I absolutely loved the whole vibe of the place, the way the shades rose up to let in the light at dusk, the little pots they hold their soy sauce in, the kind and friendly staff. The food was DELICIOUS. I almost asked for the menu back to order seconds. I would have if I didn't have to leave. My only complaint (as with most sushi spots) is that they still serve splintering disposable chopsticks. I always give it extra points when in nice places like this- real reusable chopsticks are an option. The bathrooms were clean and roomy with a nice vibe as well. Ok I am starving just thinking about their fresh food and might need to go back when the open asap

Deni B.

Yelp
One of the best sushi places in Raleigh! The BBQ roll was one of the best rolls I've ever had! Must go place in a nice area of downtown.

Mustafa Q.

Yelp
I'm not sure if we just got unlucky or experienced an anomaly but we ordered the miso soup and edamame for starters and both were lukewarm at best! It was so strange. Both things usually at any decent sushi restaurant would be steaming hot so that was very disappointing. However the sushi rolls for the entree were unique and good. Ambience and service were also great. The 3 stars are mostly because of the disappointing starters.

Melissa Z.

Yelp
When people ask for a sushi spot suggestion in Raleigh I ALWAYS recommend City Market Sushi. They are definitely in the top 3 sushi spots in the area and their food always tastes fresh and delicious. The restaurant has a very intimate and relaxed ambience and is a great spot for a date or a girls night out. They don't have BOGO sushi but I personally think it's because they are too good for it. The location is tucked away near social status so parking is a little rough. My last time here I got the panko scallop roll, mad salmon roll, spicy tuna dynamite roll, and hamachi salmon roll. Though everything was great, the hamachi salmon and panko scallop roll were our top 2. We ordered it to go and it was ready on time and fresh. I really wanted to try the kobe sliders since a lot of people raved about it on other reviews but it was currently off the menu. If you love sushi I know you will thoroughly enjoy city market sushi. 10/10!

Meredith C.

Yelp
Best sushi in Raleigh!!! Staff is so kind and friendly. Fish is super fresh!!! Love the atmosphere

Patrick R.

Yelp
The best sushi we have had in NC. It's delicious, consistent, and the service is great. They have all the flavor profiles nailed in their sushi rolls. The apps are also exceptional. Highly recommend.

Onvara A.

Yelp
City Market Sushi was just as good as I had hoped it would be! We truly had a 5 star experience here for dinner. It was easy making reservations on their website and service was excellent throughout the entire meal. The rolls were presented beautifully (meant to be photographed) and tasted fresh and delicious. My favorite was the Unagi Dragon. The Truffle Salmon appetizer was also like a little taste of heaven. I am so excited to return and try more dishes!

Alexis B.

Yelp
City Market Sushi is small and intimate and a great ambience for a date night or girls night out. The staff was friendly and helpful and the food was delicious. Highly recommend.

Kelsey C.

Yelp
I don't eat a lot of sushi but these were all so good and the gyoza was so tasty. Presentation was amazing. Never thought k would eat dragon fruit and tuna together but it works. Great time to catch up with friends.

Ela G.

Yelp
One of the best sushi restaurants in the city. Friendly staff and fast service. Nice vibe inside and the sushi quality was top level.

Veullard V.

Yelp
My husband and I favorite new spot!! Looking forward to dinning more here. Finally found another date night spot! City Market Sushi is the absolutely delicious sushi spot

Stacy Y.

Yelp
This place does not disappoint for sashimi. Extremely fresh and it's all about the simplicity and highlight of the fish.

Rebecca H.

Yelp
Walked in and was told it was a 30 minute wait for two and that even when we were seated we'd only have fifteen minutes left to order before kitchen closes- which surprised us but was totally fine. We gave our phone number and we're promised a text when a table or slot was available, then went outside to wait. The (beautiful, white) couple behind us then checked in and were seated immediately on an available four-top without a reservation. Despite the perceived slight we gave this location the benefit of the doubt and waited outside for the promised text that a table or bar stool would be available ... and it never came. We were never seated, and I'll never attempt to patron this establishment again.

Laney H.

Yelp
showed up and was quoted a 30 minute wait- waited down for maybe 5 minutes and we got a seat at the bar! food was incredible and super innovative!!

Nikole M.

Yelp
City Market Sushi is my favorite sushi place of all time! We have never had a bad experience here. Sadly, I no longer live local to Raleigh and can't come here weekly (like I would like to, haha), but while I was in town for the holiday, my family and I stopped in for dinner! The ambiance is wonderful, and the staff is always so friendly! When dining, we always order some appetizers before sushi rolls. Our go-to appetizers are the gyoza and edamame! We hope to try the blue crab sliders someday because they sound super good too! Our favorite sushi rolls are the Panko Scallop, Ahi Poke, and Ultimate Rainbow. Make sure to include these rolls in your order the next time you go! My only gripe is that they removed the Dragon Tuna roll from the menu. It was one of my favorites and I was so sad to see it gone. Our waiter explained it was due to supply chain issues and it wasn't necessarily gone forever. I'm hoping it'll make its way back to the menu before my next trip!

PJ B.

Yelp
We have been here 4 times in 3 weeks! Service is great. Beer is cold. The sashimi is crisp and fresh. The roles are unique and taste fantastic. The garlic edamame and green tea are simple but a must order. We will be back!

Calvin D.

Yelp
A fine dining experience of sorts with great service. Very nice inside and great location. However with the high price tag, I expected the sushi to be better.

Chad W.

Yelp
What a freaking amazing surprise! In Raleigh for work and found this place. Located in the market area of downtown. My experience was absolutely amazing. The sushi was delicious! The plating was beautiful and elegant. All the flavors were outstanding. The hamachi jalapeño and truffle salmon both were excellent! So clean with layers of flavors. If you live here or just in town for work or pleasure make sure you try this spot out!

Cynthia N.

Yelp
Love this place! Went here to eat for a goodbye dinner for our friends moving away to Florida and though I was sad to see them go, I was happy I found my favorite sushi spot in the process. Started off with Soft Shell Crab Sliders. These were so so good. I recommend! For our rolls, we got the Panko Scallop, the Dragon Tuna, and the Spicy Tuna Dynamite rolls. I honestly loved all 3 rolls but loved the Panko Scallop the most. For dessert, we ordered a Green Tea Creme Brulee with a side of vanilla ice cream and it was the best creme brulee of my life. We also got 2 bottles of Lyche Sake and it was scary good. Couldn't even taste the alcohol content so I could def see someone sipping on this sake like juice and then passing out haha New favorite sushi spot! Unique and high quality cuts. 10/10

Angie S.

Yelp
City market sushi is delicious. Some of the best sushi that I've had in Raleigh. I had the truffle salmon and the ahi poke roll, which were both fintastic. The portions were a bit small for the price, but I think that is expected at nice places like this. Service was great, and the atmosphere is casual-dressy. Nice for a girls' night out.

Emma S.

Yelp
First time customer and I def will be back!! First, City Market Sushi has such a cute atmosphere! Very classy and I like the dim lighting. Great place for a small birthday dinner or date night. We went on a Tuesday night and even though the tables said "reserved" we were able to get a table when we walked in. On a weekend, I would call ahead. We ordered tempura as our appetizer and it was so yummy! Then I ordered the Dragon Tuna Sushi Dinner. Inside of it was panko soft shell crab & avocado (wrapped in soy paper) and on the outside was dragon fruit, tuna, tobiko, & sweet ponzu! I would recommend this if you're a a beginning sushi eater. It's light and the dragon fruit really makes the dish. Beautifully presented as well. We also ordered their green tea Creme brulee. Creme brulee is my favorite dessert but green tea doesn't do much for me. Luckily, the green tea flavor was very subtle! I would order again!

John M.

Yelp
My God this place is good. Wow. Was recommended by a friend and will definitely be back.

Kent W.

Yelp
One of the best sushi spots in the triangle. Consistent high quality rolls, wonderful apps, and great service. The drink menu is limited (only by quantity not quality) but don't let that stop you- there is lots to explore and if you enjoy saki then you're g2g. The rolls are eclectic but the combinations and flavors are great. The only thing I wish they still had was the black tiger roll with potato strings. It was amazing and if they ever bring it back I'll be in heaven. Seating is limited so I encourage you to make a reservation ahead of time but there is usually a spot at the bar. The interior is dark, and it can be loud but it is very nice, clean, and a great spot for a night out with friends.

Leyla G.

Yelp
Cute small place in the heart of downtown, the food was very nicely done especially deep fried pork belly. I really loved the sushi I picked, but thought the menu is not very kids friendly and kind of limited. Service was very fast and on point!

Maggie L.

Yelp
Food was good and service was OK!! My boyfriend and I stopped in for dinner one night while walking around downtown Raleigh, NC. It was fairly empty as it was still early in the night (around 5PM) and sat at a high-top table. We were served our food very fast; however, our server was not the most friendly. Polite and quick, but was not the most interactive.

Nancy T.

Yelp
These are some of the best sushi rolls I have ever had and it's not an exaggeration. I'm talking California level good. You know I love sushi and these rolls are to die for *chefs kiss* I've been to City Market a few times but to be honest, I haven't been here in over two years. Why? I live about 30 minutes away and the hours didn't work for me. But I was in Raleigh and really craving sushi and because my regular spot was closed, we ended up going with City Market and it was the best decision ever. The sushi is super fresh and the ordering and pickup system is also really convenient and easy. They had a designated area for curbside out front like a lot of restaurants and I was surprised at how quick they were. Yes you'll end up paying more than your average sushi restaurant, but for the flavor alone, it's so worth it.

Rachael N.

Yelp
The sushi was absolutely amazing. The restaurant is intimate and nicely decorated. The service as friendly and we never wanted for anything. Would definitely recommend.

North Y.

Yelp
I love the Tempura Shrimp and dessert here. The plate is delicate, which is a good choice for a date.

Jason T.

Yelp
As advertised. Perfect menu. Try everything. How simple menu and proper service should be. Take my money.

Shana G.

Yelp
My go to sushi place if you want top notch sushi! I've raved about it to all my friends and it's 10x better than any BOGO sushi place. The service is friendly and attentive, they bring out the food very quick. I suggest getting a reservation since the place is so popular, especially on the weekend. Side note: I used to hate sushi until I tried this place :)
