Highlights

Located in the Hunts Point neighborhood of the Bronx, City Tamale is a beloved neighborhood destination for handmade tamales and authentic mexican fare. Since we opened in January 2016, City tamale sells over 2,500 tamales savory and sweet, each week. Ingredients are sourced directly from Mexico and supplemented with fresh produce from the nearby Hunts points Market. While traditional tamales, like the constantly popular cheese jalapeño tamal, and the chicken salsa verde tamal, are a main draw at City Tamale. We're also known for our seasonal tamales creations, like the pumpkin spice tamal, and our loaded tamales.

"Not far from the Bronx’s Hunts Point market, owner Israel Veliz has been making savory and sweet tamales using his mother’s recipe since 2016. The secret: a little bit of baking soda in the masa. They cost around $4 each and come filled with chicken, pork, black bean, and strawberry. Or, try them “loaded” with cheese, lettuce, and pico de gallo on top." - Luke Fortney

Google
A unique place that focus on tamales. They have a variety of flavors to choose from, even vegetarian options. Everyone should be able to find a flavor they like. I really enjoyed having a tamale witth egg, which is their most popular dish. I washed it down with a delicious champurado drink. It was the perfect breakfast. Located in the Hunts Point area the restaurant has a very pretty green and yellow theme. The staff was very friendly. We tried several other flavor of tamales, they all tasted great. I recommend checking this place out. I hope to get back there soon. Like the sign says on the door "Start your day with a tamale".

*Edited Review* I had placed an order for 24 tamales. When I arrived home I was short 10 tamales. It was Christmas Eve and I was obviously very upset. I reached out to management and they were truly sorry for the mistake. They even offered to bring me tamales the next morning! I will say, it’s one of the best customer service experiences I’ve ever had. Thank you so much City Tamale. Best Tamale in NYC!!

Came without expectations and left with the certainty of knowing that I will be back for more. The food is delicious and fresh and inexpensive. Had to use their bathroom and it was spotless. I definitely don't mind the trip and the toll from Queens. Thankfully there's plenty of parking space in the area.

Google
The tamales here were delissshhhh! The Mole tamale was FULL of meat. They don't skimp you on that. I give it to them. Most places it's a pinch of meat. Not here! Definitely get your money worth. The bean tamale was ok, just ok. When I went the only had few options. I'm guessing bc it was after lunch time. Idk. But they didnt have what I wanted. The restuarant is sooo tiny. Maybe enough room for 4 people to eat. I couldn't enjoy eating there. It's also around warehouses and truckers everywhere! Parking really sucks. Again trucks everywhere. At first I thought GPS was taking me somewhere else. Lol. But it's there.

We would eat here again. A little out of the way but worth it. Everything we ate was good, hot, and fresh. They received an A from the health inspector while we were here.

Way too busy at 2 pm on a Friday. When I arrived there was no line and only one customer eating. They go too fast. Their main priority is delivery orders. So they don’t have time to answer too many questions about the menu. There were no more protein tamales. So I ordered a grilled chicken wrap. The chicken was raw in some places because it was not cleaned properly and the wrap was soaking of some type of white sauce. The drippings of the wrap fell on my work pants. I lost my appetite and didn’t eat the other half of the wrap. I had to throw it away. The tamales ARE good. So if you order them, you will be playing it safe. It just goes to show that just because it’s popular at the moment, doesn’t mean it’s always good food and good service.

Google
Phenomenal food even as we got there when they were closing. They gave us the same outstanding service as any time of the day.

Yelp
This places is theeee BEST!!!! I'm so shocked in such a beautiful way. I found out about this place through word of mouth. I'm so glad I made time to check it out. I had the signature tamales and they were so so soooo gooood. It came with crema and more sauces. I also enjoyed the side of rice and beans with guacamole. Honestly, it was a whole meal!!! This will definitely be my secret go to spot this summer. It's my favorite spot in Hunts Point now. Traveling by bus was easy and efficient. My friend and I enjoyed ourselves and our lunches. The staff was friendly and made sure we had what we needed. The yellow walls made me happy and the decor was nice. Please stop here and give this place a try.... the tamales are worth it. The menu is worth it. The drinks are great too. I had lemonade and it was amazing. I left with tacos for dinner later that night. I'm so happy they have a 3 for $10 deal. Lastly, I loved that there was also a small area to sit and watch what was happening outside. I had a great experience and I will be telling everyone from every borough to visit. It's a must if you're visiting South Bronx. Put this place on your list!!!! I will definitely be back. I have to try their Birria tacos next!!!! I'm so excited!!!

Yelp
So after 6mths of begging my boyfriend to take me here we finally took the trip. I am pleased to say that this is definitely one of the top five hidden gems in the Bronx. Upon arrival we were greeted by friendly staff, and the warm aromas of the delicious meal that awaited us. We devoured two tamale combos that came with all the fixings. Best tamales we have ever had thus far. Don't take my word for it go check it out! P.S Ask for the special tamales of the day, and take a second plate home. I promise you won't regret it!

Rosa M.

Yelp
Overpriced. The food is okay at best. They charge you for every single little topping you want so essentially it's $4+ for just 2 tortillas with a little meat on it. The cheese they put on looks like they just sprinkled Kraft cheese on the tortilla & stuck it in the microwave. The rice tastes like box microwave rice. I've gone to bakeries that sell way more loaded tacos for the same price as these sparse ones.

Yelp
Oh my. Oh my. Oh my my my! I am soooo thrilled that City Tamale exists! I've had this spot bookmarked foreverrrr, but their hours of business and working in midtown never let me stop by. Cue in crazy quarantine schedule and finally! A long overdue visit absolutely worth the trip (and wait). I'm very fortunate that I get authentic Michocuan style tamales from a family friend in MD (and even shipped) so yes-- my standards are pretty high. City Tamale does not miss a beat! They definitely held up to my standards. I got about a dozen to go, in many flavors, but of course I had to eat some while I was there! Decided to go with the salsa verde and habanero chicken with the works. Let me just tell you, the pickled onions are bomb on their own. The tamales? Picantito pero no peligroso. A little spicy, but not dangerous. I'm pretty sure I ate more of my boyfriend's tamal then he did. I just could not stop myself. Took a couple to his Dominican mom who's fallen in love with Mexican tamales and she was super thrilled to have them! She's been asking when we're going back. The chicken Mole poblano was so yummy as well as the Raja's con queso. Can't wait to stop by for some champurrado when the weather gets colder. The staff was also super gracious and made the visit even better. Gracias City Tamale!

Lizzy N.

Yelp
Whoa!! This hidden gem is off the beaten path and it is worth the trip!!! The tamales were off the hook, la masa was perfect, and the chicken seasoned to perfection. The staff is friendly and professional, and the food offerings are plentiful!! Swing through!! Your stomach will thank you!!!

Kenneth D.

Yelp
"There's probably nowhere worth eating where we're going on Friday, is there?" Challenge accepted, and thank you fellow Yelpers. Having to spend the afternoon on business at a couple of different places in Hunts Point wasn't either of our ideas of a great time, but City Tamale put an exclamation point on an otherwise tedious day. We arrived a bit late in the day, so the selection of tamales was a bit limited. My partner opted for the carnitas lunch special, with a chicken tinga tamal and a small side salad. I chose to start with one of the things tamales, a pork salsa rojo, and a street style taco with steak. The taco came out after I'd demolished the first part of my order, but that was not a problem, as I already knew I'd be going back to order more. The tamales have a perfect ratio of filling to masa, and the chicken tinga ones were astoundingly flavorful. The pork within the other is tender and mild, like straned Baby Jesus in a corn husk. The carnitas, which I sampled, was a bit dry, but aided by the salsa verde which eventually accompanied my taco. The taco could - should - have been an absolute highlight, but the cut of beef they used in mine was so tough that two one inch long pieces were not really edible. The flavor was exceptional, with a lovely amount of char, but it would have benefitted greatly from some tenderization. The cilantro and onions were very fresh, and the double corn tortillas were among the best I've ever had. We did, as I mentioned, order yet more tamales, and ate until we were fairly stuffed. I even redeemed the check-in offer for a free one, which - be warned - doesn't take one off your bill, but sends you home with one as a fun breakfast snack for the following day. All in all, prior to this visit, the only thing I'd ever have travelled recreationally to the Bronx for was a Yankees game. Now, if I find myself with a few hours to waste and craving some comfort food, I would actually make this trip for no other reason than a comforting, delicious, and inexpensive lunch.

Yelp
Yerrrrrrrrrrrr! BRONX STAND UP! This place really puts on for our borough hands down. Located in Hunts Point trucking section. Feeding all the truckers, which explains the hours. But that didn't matter to me! I was determined to get there from my side of the Bronx. I called and spoke to Mia who was soooo dope! She set aside my order which was a couple black bean vegan, Rajas con queso, and a couple chicken salsa verde. When I got there she said my name! BIANCA! I felt home lmao. We had great convo and even promised me a shirt on my next visit! Ok so the tamale as taste DELICIOUS! The masa hits soooooooo perfect. They really perfected that tamale masa. Not dry at all!!!! Super moist, flavorful, and soft. I don't eat meat anymore so I had the vegan and rajas con queso. Yo! So impressed! Every bite. My friend and I were so satisfied. I can't wait to visit and I'm sure it's going to be VERY SOON! I also love that the tamales are tied with a string that says BRONX MADE

Frank X.

Yelp
3.5 . For tamales this place is pretty good. Stuff is definitely fresh. Was out of pork tamale option when i visited. Had tamale combo but rice n beans came with black bean. Wished they had a refried option. Salsas lacking bite not hot enough. Bit out of the way but would visit again. Edit: yah salsa definitely weak. Get more jalapeños

Omar M.

Yelp
No frills no over-the-top gourmade dick crust. good prices the really really lend themselves to the neighborhood because the majority of people don't live here they just work here. Empanadas are chubbyn crisp. Tamales were very savory and just add the breakfast look really good but I didn't get any of it

David L.

Yelp
What a pleasant surprise! City Tamale is everything my heart desires. Not only are they a tiny family business in the middle of nowhere (bonus for "hidden secret" status), the proprietors themselves somehow manage to do all the cooking & customer service & social media with a loving personal touch. First and foremost, excellent masa; but also worth mentioning are the beautifully herbed & spiced meats, and the legit best fruit-juices around. I really want to emphasize how grateful I am, that as a non-Spanish-speaking Hispanic, I received no sort of negative treatment whatsoever, which sadly is all to common, it's saddening when it happens and unfortunately it happens a lot, but these people here are kind and warm, and I will be back regularly.

Joel L.

Yelp
City Tamale with no Tamales. Went there today to bring home some tamales. Mind you, this at 1:30 in the afternoon, To my surprise, they were out of all of them except Chicken( which was fair at best). They also ran out of corn toppings. Is it too much to ask a tamale named restaurant to have Tamales in stock?. This is like McDonalds running out of burgers. The nice young man at the counter was apologetic( hence the two stars), said there was some event, which is no excuse, they should be prepared for that. If you still want to get tamales here, Call beforehand as they always run out. Also , parking is horrible

Richard E.

Yelp
Outstanding tamales . Had one of each (4). Tried to saver them but ate them all at once. Total gem of a find here in hunts point. You'd be a fool not to stop.

Chris W.

Yelp
Excellent tamales. Favorite flavors were the mole and vegetarian. The masa is delicious, firm, and very moist. So happy this place exists.

Ty C.

Yelp
This place is off the beaten path but well worth the journey. Ordered the Tamale breakfast and added a pollo tamal to the meal. 7m later they delivered the breakfast to the table and it was so good. I have been to this place twice now and will continue to go as its on my way to Valhalla after leaving LGA. I am even delivering to-go orders for my coworkers at the Hospital now.

Cindy C.

Yelp
If you want tamales that taste homemade this is it. A friend of mine recommended me this place and it did not disappoint, plus the staff is very courteous here. Will be returning to get my tamal fix.

Justin P.

Yelp
I had been searching for the best tamales in the area, I looked all over NNJ/NYC and I couldn't figure out where the best ones were. Until I finally said screw it and took the trip out to the bronx. These are the best tamales I have had since I was in CDMX. Rajas, salsa verde, and chipotle were my favorites. They are excellent, decided to buy a dozen and bring them back to jersey.

Jeffrey H.

Yelp
Best tamales in NYC. They've a variety of choices from spicy ones to mild and to mild to sweet ones made of strawberry or Oreo cookies! RECOMMENDED. They offer a variety for diverse customers, they've special Tamales for vegetarians, vegans and etc.

Kamal H.

Yelp
Some of the best tamales I had in the USA. Best I had in nyc. Worth checking out if you in the hood. Was hear for some work and loved it

Yelp
I have been coming here for years. Just ordered 35 tamales to bring on vacation, they were an instant favorite. Incredible ingredients, vegetarian and sweet options all such a treat. Staff is kind, helpful, welcoming. I'd take a bus, a train, a plane to get to these tamales!! And the empanadas were good, too!

Jennifer S.

Yelp
So on yelp it states that they close at 4 but on the weekends they actually close at 3pm. The young man behind the counter was more than happy to serve us even though they were closed. He was so pleasant and even offered us to dine in although the tables had already put away. Me and my sister ordered two tamales each but the young man was kind enough to give us one free tamale each. I had two cheese and one tinga (chipotle chicken) These are hands down the best tamales I have had in the city by a long stretch. The tamales was soft and moist through out and stuffed with chicken and cheese. They have homemade beverages too! Tamarind which is the best I have ever tasted. It's the perfect ration of sweet and sour. They also have Hibiscus juice, lemonade and horchata. I regret not getting the horchata but that's just another reason to come back. I can't wait to try their sweet tamales too..who new tamales could be a desert. I am going to be a frequent customer that's for sure.

Saïeda H.

Yelp
Okay, just left. I happened to come as they were closing up, they were SO KIND, let me in and told me all they had left were tamales- which was ABSOLUTELY FINE that's what I wanted. THEY. ARE. DELICIOUS! Got them fully loaded with the Pico, sour cream and lettuce. My goodness! The chicken, pork and cheese all delightful! I'm so glad to have authentic Mexican Tamales in NYC!! Definitely need to come back and try the tacos!

Yelp
This a great place to Mexican food , and they also have out standard customer service. I truly enjoyed each tamale that ate from here. The owners twist of tamale with strawberry flavor is truly genius of him to do. I highly recommend anyone traveling to New York City must eat here. The restaurant is not that close from the 6 train Hunts point station, but it's worth going there to eat here. Please try their tacos as well.

SERENE N.

Yelp
Take the No. 6 train to Hunts Point and try some of the most delicious tamales in NYC. I had a pollo and a mushroom at the restaurant -- it was midafternoon, so they were out of some of the other flavors. Then I got a dozen uncooked pork tamales to go. The owner gave me detailed cooking instructions and threw in a couple of free pumpkin tamales for free. Can't wait to try those!

Jason P.

Yelp
Heard about this place for a long time and have always wanted to give it a try. This place is in the Hunt's Point section of the Bronx which is all industrial with tons of manufacturing and automotie businesses in the area. Getting here, particularly crossing the Bruckner, can be challenging as every crossing point seems to be flooded with trucks blockig intersections.Lots of cars are double and even trple parked throughout the streets. This place is on the main street of Oak Point Avenue which has a few angled parking strips nearby, which makes parking easy..and free...if you can find a spot. I visited in the eary afternoon on a Friday and was able to snag the last spot. Right now there is only outdoor seating and takeout only due to COVID. This place has a variety of dishes including a hot food tables (chicken, rice, pork...), empanadas and tamales of course. I got a few tamales and empanadas. Everything was very good. They were some of the best tamales and empanadas I've had. What really impressed me was the amount of filling (chicken, pork, veggies..) that were stuffed into the tamales and empanadas. My olny gripe is the price... I think $3+ per tamale may be a tad too much. I can go to Queens or Uptown Manhattan and get some great tamales for $1-$2 each. I would love to return to visit and try some other tamale varieties and even some hot food there.

Michael B.

Yelp
Awesome food!!! I come all the way down from Connecticut to try this place. I didn't get the guys name who helped me but he gave me a strawberry flavored tamale for free when I told him from where I come from. I love places that take care of their customers. Will be back when I come back to the Bronx.

Sam W.

Yelp
Ive spent 8 years living in Texas and Arizona, but I can easily and honestly say these are the best tamales I've ever eaten. The habanero chix was hot n spicy, the rojo pork was tender and well seasoned, and the sweet dulce tamale was a tasty finish to a filling meal. Take it from this gringo, City Tamale is worth the trip out to Hunts Point for their delicious tamales!

double double u.

Yelp
A hidden gem in the middle of bus depots and warehouses. If eating there be sure to ask for the tamales "prepped" (w/cheese and salad) for $1.25 more

Jonathan L.

Yelp
Wow this place blew my mind. The tamales are the most delicious decadent food I have had. Prices are dirt cheap well worth the trip to Hunts point.

Eileen W.

Yelp
Excellent Tamales and good watermelon drink. 3 tamales For 5 dollars is huge and hard to finish! Simple menu but the verde, Mole, and Tinga tamales were fantastic. Nice quick service via delivery. I have been in also and fun to watch them make tamales in the window.

Kahliah L.

Yelp
Wow these are some of the best tamales I've ever tasted. The masa was flavorful and moist the meat was tender and well-seasoned. My pet peeve is not getting the right masa to meat ratio and these were perfect. I would go out of my way to eat here again and am trying to figure out a way to get back up to the BX before my flight back to the West Coast so I can take some home with me! Wish this place had been around during the 8 years I lived in NYC, dreaming of good tamales for Christmas. I'll def be back in September during my next visit

Karla G.

Yelp
I'm new to the neighborhood and have been wanting to try this spot! Ordered breakfast - chicken and salsa verde tamale w 2 eggs and bacon. Eggs were cooked nicely sunny side up. The tamale was perfect. My husband had the bacon egg cheese sandwich. He liked it except that it had mayo. We will keep that in mind for our future order... which will be soon! Hospitality was great. My food was approx 15-20 mins late but it was still warm and the lady on the phone was extremely sweet and helpful. Same for delivery guy. Looking forward to supporting this small business!

E. M.

Yelp
Tamales were excellent - so much meat inside, total yummery! There are vegan and gluten-free options. I highly appreciated the owner of the place is very welcoming and all staff is friendly and smiling. Thank you, guys! We will definitely stop by next time we are in the area!

Phalla C.

Yelp
Its okay. Had better tamales on the street corner .its overrated. Small tamales for 3.25 maybe for the space they have. Outside is cheaper and more flavorful. Not too much on filling. I ordered raja.really just okay.not worth going across town for. Go to ur local tamales person on the street, its probably better and cheaper.about 2.50 at most outside and softer more flavorful.

Mickey W.

Yelp
Best Mexican tamales I've ever had. Generous amount of filling, fresh, moist and flavorful at ridiculously reasonable prices. 6 tamales, 2 Victoria beers, stewed pork and rice, and a coffee cost $30. Super friendly, efficient staff. We just finished eating our second order of tamales for breakfast that we got to go yesterday after our sit-down meal. Yum. The only criticism one might have is the limited indoor seating, chairs against one wall and window with narrow counter top. However, that is a minor complaint. I like the no frills homey vibe.

Queen Q.

Yelp
First Timer.........and the food was delicious....the chicken noodles soup was delicious as well just a little to much salt....

Alina G.

Yelp
Authentic and delicious! The tamales were very generous and the amount of pork and chicken inside the tamales were super tasty and flavorful. Despite being fat and out of the way coming from Brooklyn definitely will visit again!

Chitara W.

Yelp
I've used City Tamale for many of my events at school. Israel is very accommodating to my budget and the food is delicious. I've tried almost everything on their menu and the breakfast tacos are amazing! I definitely recommend them for a personal lunch delivery or event you need catering for.

Cristina C.

Yelp
Omg!!!!! Can I say heaven in your mouth?!! The first bite was absolutely delicious, I just wanted to keep eating and not stop. The tamale was soft, moist and perfectly seasoned. The meat inside was juicy and added to the tasty delight. The added toppings just made it an instant hit. My daughters love tamales and this was absolutely a great pick on a whim, I will definitely go there on a regular basis. You need more locations. 5 stars and more!!!

Matt B.

Yelp
If you want to find the best Tamales in the NYC metro area look no further than City Tamale! The staff are always super friendly and cater to everyone's needs. From vegan to meat tamales and other fantastic Mexican cuisine, you'll be sure to leave bringing some food home to friends and family. Great vibe and great location!

Frankie M.

Yelp
I saw the reviews on this place and was headed to Hunts Point so decided to stay on the 6 bus a few more stops to make it here. I had the verde chicken and pernil (pork) tamales. The chicken was delicious and the pork was ok, not bad but not amazing. I took off a star because I had the tamarindo drink that was warm by the time I walked a block away. On a hot summer day I truly wanted to be refreshed. The food is good and the staff is friendly and the price is definitely worth it so I will be back but with my own drink.

Alberto R.

Yelp
Go for what they advertise, TAMALES. Not frozen just fresh. It's all in the taste. My favourite was the rajas tamal, the dulce is also good. Low price for nyc. Stop by

Mike Z.

Yelp
Good place for fresh tamales, various types.Cozy place in the heart of Hunts Point They had other dishes,I had the chicken & pork tamales very fresh and I will be back.Staff was polite and food was hot.

Loraine R.

Yelp
This is my best place to eat Mexican food, very clean, great food choices, very friendly staff

Robert R.

Yelp
Never been a Tamale person, but was told "SINCE YOU LOVE FOOD" then you need to check this place out. I gotta be honest it DID NOT DISAPPOINT.

Alex K.

Yelp
Got the vegetarian tamales and the chicken empanadas and both were amazing. To say this place is off the beaten path is probably the understatement of the year, but it's highly worth going out of the way to check this place out.

Brittany H.

Yelp
Great, authentic tamales. It was a bit of a trek to get there but totally worth it! You can mix and match which tamales you get. My favorite was the pork!

Anarelly M.

Yelp
I love Tamales and to know that I can place an order and get it delivered its Amazing. Unfortunately I was only able to order it once from here and now it says they are unable to deliver to my address. Its disappointing all I want to do is support them and enjoy a good Tamal! Please have more options like uber eats or seamless so I can place my order!

Patti M.

Yelp
I stopped in here today with my daughters and we were super happy with our food! We got the carrot agua fresca and the horchata and both were refreshing and delicious. I had a chicken taco which was totally on point and my daughter had the steak burrito which she said was awesome and I never got a bite because she finished it. We also ordered the guac and chips which was also nice and fresh. I told the owner I wasn't that hungry so would order a tamale another day, and he gave me a chicken one to-go (how nice is that?) to try at home and it was soooooo good! We will definitely head back there next time we are in Hunt's Point. I think they should try to get in as vendors at Yankee Stadium the way Shea Stadium has local vendors. Tamales at Yankee Stadium would be incredible!
