The 15 Best Rooftops In Boston - Boston - The Infatuation

"Does the second floor count as a “rooftop”? Batman would probably find it hard to see the bat signal from there, and all of his fights would draw a crowd of passer-bys, but since those sound like great plot twists for a satirical film, we’ll let it slide. Plus, you can almost see the Chestnut Hill reservoir from the deck at Cityside Tavern, so really, you could also say you spent your weekend sipping Mai Tais “by the water.”" - joel ang, dan secatore

Where to Dine on Rooftops in and Around Boston

"Located in Cleveland Circle since 1985, this sports bar has a deck that wraps around the whole building, providing a lot of outdoor seating for a just-out-of-undergrad crowd. Hit brunch during a game, suck down an adult iced coffee spiked with vanilla vodka and hazelnut liqueur, and share some cheesy pizza bites with your crew." - Tanya Edwards, Eater Staff

Got the smash burger, pretty tasty with fries. The tater tots are good as well. Service was friendly, and we went there for an early dinner so it was nice and quiet.

My friends and I had a great experience here! We came for Sunday brunch and the food and drinks were fantastic. I loved the breakfast egg rolls! Additionally, Nina was a fantastic server and so kind and attentive. She was still being trained by Jess, both of whom made the experience great! Would definitely recommend!

Google
We were here on a very busy football game day and the staff were all incredible- especially our talented and cheerful server Jessica! She handled a group of 15 people (over half were children) with grace, speed, professionalism, and a sense of humor. We loved sitting on the deck and enjoying the weather. Excellent food! We’ll be back next time we come to Boston.

The atmosphere on a game day is top notch! We enjoyed our time at the bar for a solid hour before our party of ten moved to the second floor outdoor patio. Close to a park and terrific neighborhood. Our server, Jessica, was the friendliest, most attentive, and thoroughly fun server in Boston! We were not an easy group. The restaurant was slammed, but we felt like our every need was covered. The food was perfect! Nachos, fish and chips, burgers, hot wings, fried pickles… we ordered all the hits and we were delighted! What a spot. Thank you, Cityside and Jessica, for a totally awesome pregame experience.

First off, our waitress was a pleasant lady and she did nothing wrong. But the upper management is ignorantly stupid. For context, my partner and I are above 30. I understand carding and ID-ing for alcohol is the norm, but our foreign ID with DoB wasn't accepted by the establishment. So we presented photo evidence of our learners permit, but that wasn't accepted either. So we didn't get a drink...fine whatever. The food we got was missing salt or rather much flavor at all. And then the table next to us was a family (mother, two grown kids). The manager brought a Modelo to serve the young man. Then he asked him for his ID (instead of prior to ordering), to which he claimed it was fake and took away the beer. The family understandably got up and left. Shortly after, their ordered food arrived with no patrons to give it to. Not only is this management's process not organized, it is based on the manager's gut feeling. Their judgement call is costing the business customer relations and money. I certainly do not plan to come back, not because we got carded and denied services, but for the way the restaurant is run. They claim they only accept US or CAN ID's, so I guess if you're European or Asian, etc, you can't get a drink. Food is bad, management is bad, wait staff is good.

Nina was awesome! She chatted with us and was super sweet! We got everything we needed and had a great time here. Her trainer Jess was also really helpful!

Decided to treat ourselves to dinner on the patio last night, and were lucky enough to have Jess as our server. She was such a treat, and really made the experience for us. She gave great recommendations, and gave me the courage to try something new. I'm a very habitual person, but I think I have a new favorite drink order!

We had a lovely meal as a group! There was a sports game on, and the restaurant was packed! Nevertheless, our waitress Jessica delivered us outstanding service!

Yelp
Came here with a few friends and my girlfriend on a hot summer Friday night - I used to live in the Brighton area so I've passed it millions of times but never got around to trying it. We sat on the roof top balcony and the venue was really cool! Definitely the spot for some fun with friends. The service was really good as well, the waitress was attentive and followed through with our requests. They also let us come back in a few hours later to use the bathroom free of charge. Aside from the cool venue and exceptional service, we found the food itself to be just OK. To start, we ordered the Italian egg rolls, which were a bit misleading as we expected something like a Caprese egg roll, it was more like ham and spicy cheese. It was a flavor combination I've never experienced before. ordered the Cobb salad, one of my favorites, and it was pretty good and the chicken was cooked very well - but it didn't stick out to me. It was a bit bland as a salad. My roommate ordered a cheeseburger with fries and said it was just OK. My girlfriend's bowl was also just OK, not booming with flavor as a burrito bowl should. My roommate's boyfriend ordered the fish n chips where the fish was good and was fried in potato chips (awesome!), but the coleslaw was just sad. It didn't taste great and definitely wasn't made with enough love. I'll give it another shot just because I think they have some better options such as the nachos and buffalo chicken wrap, so I'll be back for those, and it was an enjoyable spot to hangout with friends!

Yelp
So a wild thing happened while I was here I ordered the buffalo mac and cheese with the fries chicken. Why they bring it to me with pork and I didn't notice until I ate a good portion of it I was wondering what where the chicken was but it's because they put pork in it and it didn't taste like chicken and so when I mixed it up I realized that it was pulled pork so now I'm now consumed pork. Nothing I can do about it I guess but man all they took was attention to detail. They said the kitchen was really busy, so they mixed up the order. Their mistake is going to make me sick for the next 48 hours. But I get it "they were busy". Fish tacos are really good tho, and they have a lot on the menu. They have a balcony seating and the decor and ambiance is nice. They have a great drink list. Takes a while to get seen when you sit, but it gives you enough time to decide what you want.

Yelp
Great Beer and food! Late night! Love the vibe! Cityside Rooftop! Love it! Such great times,Great people!

Yelp
Cityside Tavern is located near Boston College in Cleveland Circle. The service is impeccable and very friendly. Restaurant was clean and decor has exposed brick with industrial design elements. I decided to sit upstairs at the bar and LIZ was my bartender and server. She was so knowledgeable of the menu and had great drink recommendations. I tried the AÇAÍ LATER & the EXECUTIVE MIMOSA. I ordered the Avocado Toast because I'm watching my girlish figure LIZ told me the portions of the plates were big so I didn't want to eat a lot. My friend ordered pancakes, eggs and home fries . We both cleaned the plate ! I hope you this place We loved it

Yelp
If you don't know about Cityside, it's a cozy American pub vibe with trivia on both Tuesdays and Wednesdays and are open late on weekends! I am not lying when I say I've been to Cityside over 10 times and that number keeps rising. It's perfect for just drinks, brunch, lunch, or dinner. I will say, sometimes the service can be inconsistent as it gets harder when they're busy (which makes sense). Cityside has lots of drink options (especially beer) but don't miss out on the food! For dinner we got the ahi tuna tower, steak fajita bowl, and a limited-edition summer salad! The ahi tuna was fresh and I loved the concept of the tower. The sauce was very garlicky and was a bit strong but loved the rest of the topping. Steak fajita bowl is a favorite- comes with steak, beans, corns, avocado, etc and the steak is very tender and seasoned well! I don't usually order salads but knowing that it's a *limited* edition bowl, I had to try! It came with kale, strawberry, and I added steak. It was so refreshing with bright flavors, perfect for ending the summer. Definitely make your way over to play some games and great food! (side note, I'm also a huge fan of the buffalo chicken dip

Yelp
This place is the same old , but good . I came here in college many times over and now as a working adult. Love the vibe . The music is alternative . Indoor and outdoor seating , weather permitting. Very neighborhood friendly vibe . The food is good and prices are reasonable. The staff is always nice, for the most part . Parking is difficult but manageable. I recommend this place for a good meal or to have drinks with friends . Either or you can't go wrong !

Yelp
I had such a good time here! I went specifically to check out the rooftop and it was so cute. There is a little parking lot here that uses paid meters but it's free after 6, so that made things nice and easy. The roof is first come first served, but my party of 2 was seating right away. The roof tables were almost full at 8pm on a Friday. I got the strawberry rum cocktail and it was very tasty! I also enjoyed the sweet potato fries. Overall great experience

Yelp
Very kind staff in a cool environment. 2 floors of seating and a patio. Food is above average as far as taverns go. 22/30

Yelp
Finally after visiting Boston over the past 4 years I made it to City Side. Past is a couple of times and the vibe was so alive. People laughing eating and drinking. They have inside seating as well as rooftop and curbside. Full bar as well. We had a Pesto Tomato with Burrata salad and it was fantastic. The quesadillas were fantastic. Service was very good as well. This is a fun clean place with several TV's to take in a game

Yelp
It's always a great time at Cityside! Especially with Jessica as your server, Chad as your bartender, and Ed running the ship. Great food and even better service. The place to be in Brookline on any night!

Miranda S.

Yelp
I am not usually one to leave reviews, but this place deserves it. It was so busy when my husband and I came in looking for a table and they seemed short staffed so we almost left, but the manager (I forget her name) reassured us that they were happy to take care of us. We watched this woman run around and up and down the stairs, answer so many calls calls, and generally take care of everything so seamlessly. Our server Gary was amazing too and so patient. This staff really works so well together which you don't often see. This was teamwork at its finest. Thank you Gary and manager (I really wish I could remember her name but she was a nice red head) for the delightful experience. Very well oiled machine you all have here!

Yelp
I've now gone twice in the past 4 days. I'd describe Cityside as classic pub food meets good music and indoor/outdoor restaurant vibes. My order a few days ago (not pictured): I got the fried chicken sandwich with fries and a black berry downeast. Exactly what I needed to fulfill my chicken sandwich craving as well as a solid berry downeast flavor on tap coming in clutch to sip on while chatting with friends. Awesome music. They've got 90's rock and alternative music on repeat. Needless to say we had a blast. 4 days later: I ordered nachos and a mimosa. My boyfriend got Buffalo tenders and a mimosa. We both loved our meal and left the place full. The mimosas were perfect on a warm Sunday morning. The highlight this time around was definitely the seating situation. Now that their outdoor patio is open (after having been under construction for a couple years I wanna say), we were able to enjoy a stunning view of Cleveland Circle as we sat on the second floor while enjoying our meals and drinks.

Yelp
Went again for brunch this weekend. I love their options and we asked if they could prepare something not explicitly on the menu and they did no problems at all. The server was super nice and helpful as well.
google avatar

Rongan C.

Yelp
Came here for lunch when the Pats were playing, definitely a good spot for just its sound systems alone (sit upstairs if not here for the game, it gets loud downstairs by the big screens). We got the street nachos (one of the only spots we've been to where they really load the nachos up with toppings). Chip to toppings ratio was a 10/10. I'm usually not a pancakes girl, but the Cinnabon pancakes were some of the fluffiest I've had, needless to say, will be back.

Noemi R.

Yelp
Landed in Boston hungry and found this place. It would have been a long wait being a Friday night but we got two seats at the bar (full service). Both my husband and I had burgers and drinks. Bartenders were great. Drinks made strong and well. I like my burger done a little more and they did just that when requested. Also being gluten free, I appreciated the gluten free bun and side Caesar salad (minus the croutons). Everything was yummy! Highly recommend.
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
Food (3) was fair...not particularly tasty but the fries were good. Service (1) from Jack M was non-existent. I should have known we were in trouble when he first came to the table and said "I'm Jack and I'll be taking your order". That was 100% accurate because after he took the order we never saw him again until he brought the check. Never checked back. Never offered another drink. Never offered dessert. Oh well...
google avatar

Melanie H.

Yelp
What a fun little spot! I've come here after games, for trivia night (rip their trivia is kind of tough but still fun), and just for fun vibes! It's such a cool go to spot that has good food from their short rib sandwich to their nachos, and drinks that change with the seasons! I've tried many variations of the sangria, all that I can vouch for. Overall, a fun place to be especially if you're hanging with a big group of people! Will have to try their balcony seating area when the summer rolls around!

Yelp
nice casual place with a cute roof area for good weather. nothing too special, service was okay, but food was good and prices aren't too high. my mac and cheese was great and also made leftovers for another meal which is always lovely

Kevin O.

Yelp
After screwing up my kid's chicken fingers and fries order and bringing them Mac and cheese they didn't order, they delivered my fish and chips with balsamic vinegar. I had specifically asked for malt vinegar, which they said they had but turned out they did not. Then the manager came out and lied to my face, telling me they don't carry malt vinegar because it is already in the batter. I order the same fish and chips in Woburn all the time. They are owned by the same group, and the place in Woburn always has malt vinegar. The manager just straight up lied to me.

Yelp
We are from Louisiana and very used to flavor-able foods! We have been in Boston for 20 days for our daughter's open heart surgery! This is hands down the best meal we have had so far!! The steak tips were delicious and the wings, even better!! We have a few more days here and we will surely be back for one more meal! Thank you!
google avatar

Jane C.

Yelp
I came here for brunch with a friend. We had a reservation but it wasn't super busy when we went. I got the breakfast tacos which were really good! I would highly recommend this dish if you're like me and can never decide between sweet and savory for brunch. This is a good mix of both.
google avatar

Taylor G.

Yelp
I came to Cityside because it looked like a quaint cute little place for lunch. I was very disappointed by the slow service and to top it all off when I received my tacos I was excited to get eating all to find a long black hair in my food. The staff did comp my meal but were not apologetic in any way. Not did the manager come over to speak with me or apologize. My waitress never came back to check on us or to even offer another drink. I will not be returning to Cityside ever again.

Silvia G.

Yelp
Great place near BC. American food and ambience. I would recommend the frites. Service was great too

Jeffrey B.

Yelp
Solid food, solid bar scene, solid draft list. Nothing out of this world but definitely overall good spot.
google avatar

Kenneth B.

Yelp
We went here for dinner on Thursday night of the US Open week. It was close to where we were staying. If you're lucky, there is metered parking right out front. The menu is fair, they have a good variety of choices. One of us had the toasted cheese and tomato soup. Both were delicious. I had the steak salad. This had all the makings of a great salad had it not been drenched in dressing. The greens were very soggy. The steak was cooked perfectly. It comes with crispy tortilla strips and avocado. If I ordered this again, I would get the dressing on the side. I also ordered a margarita, it was OK, but the size was not proportional to the cost. Should have gone with a beer. It has outdoor seating, right in front, which was awesome on a beautiful night in Boston.

Stefanie A.

Yelp
The bouncer was actually so disrespectful, I don't think I'd ever come back here he was making rude comments giving dirty looks and punching his hand as if he was gonna hit me! How can such an establishment hire such a person ?! Do they even do background checks cause he's behavior was concerning! I'm so disappointed!
google avatar

Riley S.

Yelp
REALLY loved being at CitySide on Wednesday for trivia! Honestly, I would applaud for being the best atmosphere I've played trivia in. I truly respect how people will pause & listen to the question and are there to participate! We showed up at 7 to hopefully secure a table upstairs, since trivia is up there. We put our name in and luckily got a table for a cancellation. The service, menu, and prices are all worth it, too! Our waitress was incredible at introducing herself to every person, making sure we were ready to order or needed more time, and checking in often. I ordered the chicken quesadilla, and while it wasn't my favorite, I appreciated it for what it was. I will 100% be getting a burger next time because I spotted one going by and my mouth watered! Absolutely would recommend & cant wait for it to get warmer to enjoy the patio!
google avatar

Dick K.

Yelp
I had a cheeseburger. It tasted very good, as if it was smoked. Fries were excellent. My friend had non deep fried chicken wings. The sam Adams west (?) beer was excellent. I had a shot or two of Irish Cream. The bill was $60~. Bartender, he came to our table for the order. And the manager, friendly, she came over to ask about the food, and took the credit card. I'll be back for lunch, and I live close by/.

Caroline M.

Yelp
Went to city side yesterday which I normally love. Tonight, the general manager was so incredibly rude and condescending and dismissive with our reservation (which we had made). He insinuated we were lying about having a reservation and left us with a bad perception of the place and him.
google avatar

Joseph D.

Yelp
Great place to come lots of choices for food drinks. Her staff is very friendly. They have the barcodes for the menus lunch dinner breakfast drinks younger crowd, older crowd, family I'm very picky on where I go. I've been in four different states and I definitely recommend this place for almost everything on their menu drinks a great atmosphere is awesome and it's a Sunday. we're about to get a pomegranate Mojito, which I will be posting a picture of.
google avatar

Kailey N.

Yelp
CitySide is a great place for meat eaters, not so much for vegetarians unfortunately. As a vegetarian, I ended up just getting 2 eggs and Texas toast. Honestly the eggs and toast were great! Our server was amazing too. When things were taking a while (the restaurant was packed!) she was very sweet and checked in on my friend and I then quickly went to check the kitchen to make sure we got our food in due time. It's a very fun environment overall, it fits perfectly in the middle of all the boston colleges!
google avatar

Erica L.

Yelp
Went here with some friends for dinner and drinks on a Saturday night. There is parking nearby but limited as there are also many other businesses and it's street parking. The drinks were good, the server was so sweet, and the pricing is reasonable! The figgy chicken wrap was UNREAL. Highly recommend!!

Luke M.

Yelp
Got a burger it was undercooked asked it for it to be redone. UNDERCOOKED. Terrible. Don't recommended ever. Definitely got some stomach issues from this one. Tried to make me pay for it too
google avatar

Ryan B.

Yelp
This place has a cool environment, two floors, plenty of seating and plenty of TVs for sports. The drinks were phenomenal but the food is where I think this place fell short. My friend got a mile 22 burger which was cooked perfectly. It was juicy and flavorful. The side of fries weren't cooked all the way and came out cold. My friend didn't end up finishing those fires :/ My other friend got the Hot AF burger which was also done really well. Just as an FYI this thing is hot as in SPICY!! Muy caliente. They pack it with so many jalapeños you'll be breathing fire like khaleesis dragons in no time. The hot bird buff chick sandwich was great but spoiled by the lackluster tater tots. Wish the server would have told us they were 3 dollars extra. I didn't even end up eating them. We also got some Italian egg rolls which were different. All in all. I'd go back but I wouldn't get tots and I'd hope the fries improve. The sandwiches were great!!!
google avatar

Lauren J.

Yelp
It's your average tavern. Nothing was stellar and nothing was bad. I came in just after 6 PM to eat at the bar and kill some time before going to a friend's house in the area. The bartender was super friendly and got me a food menu right away. They were out of riesling, so I asked for rose and he let my try it first. A-ok. He gave me a good pour and took my order for a buffalo chicken wrap with waffle fries (they have regular, sweet potato and waffle as options). The food came out pretty quickly and was decent. Waffle fries were hot, but kind of tough - not really crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside like one would want. The buffalo chicken wrap was standard. I ate until I was full and wrapped up the rest. All in all - the service at the bar was friendly and quick. Wine pour was good, prices were standard and food was fine. I would come back.

Marykate D.

Yelp
I have a few pretty severe allergies (like gluten and dairy to name a couple) that make me nervous when eating out. In talking with our server, Jess, she mentioned she has Celiac and went over the menu with me. Salads are my safe food eating out, but I felt comfortable enough to try some of her recommendations. I eat at so few places but will definitely come back here! If you have allergies, I recommend asking for Jess because she was so patient and helpful. I didn't feel like my allergies were a burden and all the food and drinks were tasty.
google avatar

Jack M.

Yelp
Always come here to throw some serious weight behind some Bud Lights when I've had a bad day at the office - always end up projectile vomiting in the toilets but the staff never seem to mind.
google avatar

Scott D.

Yelp
The turkey gobbler and side salad were outrageously delicious! It's a little different, but MAN, that thing rocks!

Paul J.

Yelp
Went here with some friends on a Tuesday night to celebrate our friends 23rd birthday. It was basically empty and the bartender took our IDs the to back, came back and said they didn't scan (we're all 22 and 23). Had to go to a different bar where others said the same thing had just happened. Just seems like an odd location to not want college seniors to go to...
google avatar

Joe w.

Yelp
As a reminder, I only write up 5 star experiences and this gem earned it. I hadn't been back here for 25 years. Warmly greeted, regularly checked on, nice vibe from the crowd. Highly recommend the steak and avocado salad with an Octoberfest draft. Beers on tap are their thing but they have a nice bar selection. Big screen TVs showing all the sports action. Take a few friends or hit it up solo at the bar. Great spot to grab a pint and a bite.
google avatar

Katie G.

Yelp
I've been coming to Cityside for three years, kid at BC, never had a crappy experience like today. Place is completely empty, with a huge rush supposedly coming, they take quite awhile to seat us upstairs, floor completely empty...put us on a small table next to the stairs with full AC blasting. We are freezing and ask to move, the manager says no. We are shocked given no one is up there. Ask for our food to go. Server was sweet, not her fault. Manager is running around crazy, knows there is a problem but won't look at us. Takes a while to pay. We leave and then manager says have a nice day as we leave. We could have been in and out happy before the rush, they moved a younger couple outside...Oh...and the food was not good. Not a nice way to start the day. They can't handle the move in crowds I guess.

Yelp
*Rating based solely on FOOD* Presentation: 4 Texture: 4 Flavor: 3.5 Would return? Yes Must-try: - I went for brunch on a sunny Saturday and the place was super packed! I had the Cobb Salad which was pretty good - a good-sized plate filled with greens, tomatoes, grilled chicken, bacon, boiled egg, bits of bacon, crumbled blue cheese and avocado. The green goddess dressing was nice and, since only the greens were dressed, the amount was appropriate. The chicken was very well seasoned and very juicy. Bacon was super crispy. The ratio of ingredients was perfect. No complaints! I tried the tomato soup that comes with the grilled cheese and it was nicely flavored but very thick. My party commented the Steak and Avocado salad was nice but nothing special. The food here is typical bar food so don't expect something super special. Portions are big. Food comes out fast and at the right temperature. I would try a burger next time because they looked amazing (on the table next to mine). Non-Food Stuff: Nice vibe! It was very very busy when I was there so very noisy and lively. The service was very friendly. Hope this helps! Z.

Yelp
A great corner location in Cleveland Circle making it an easy place to stop in for a meal or a few drinks. Lots of TV's for sports watching and trivia on Wednesdays. Food and service is good!

Nadeen E.

Yelp
This place is amazing. The food is always top tier, there breakfast burritos and fried chicken eggs Benedict are an absolute favourite. If your looking for something more on the sweet side then I'd go for the pancakes. They also have wonderful service, i was in a rush and forgot my purse, they automatically pulled up my number from my reservation and called me to let me know. They held it for me until i was able to go pick it up.
google avatar

Alan C.

Yelp
I have not been to city site in maybe 20 years so I was surprised when I went how nice it was inside the waitress is very friendly. I got the chicken sandwich tried and it was very good.
google avatar

Randy S.

Yelp
I just flew in from Los Angeles today and I stopped here for dinner. The atmosphere is pleasant and casual. I just ate at a 5 star restaurant downtown Los Angeles yesterday where I paid almost $200 dollars for 2 people; this $30 meal was comperable in taste ! I had the Northender chicken sandwich with salad side and asparagus side; just fantastic! I will defiantly return to this quaint restaurant!
google avatar

Mystery M.

Yelp
I want to like this place as it is local to me and very popular. However the burger wasn't very good (asked for medium and it came out closer to rare) and the fries were subpar. Female bartender had a bit of an attitude (tattoos rather young looking) and was inattentive like she couldn't be bothered so I didn't want to complain. Would say go here for just drinks but service wasn't good so don't go here at all unless it's a last resort.
google avatar

Alexandra M.

Yelp
Came here for breakfast and watched as 5 employees including the manager stood and chatted in the corner while we waited 10+ minutes for coffee and had to flag someone down after our plates had been clean for 10+ minutes. There were only 3 tables. That being said, I had the bbq benny with arugula (they don't have spinach) instead of meat and the sauce was really good. The potato wedges were perfectly crisp. My partner had the breakfast sandwich and enjoyed it as well, but said it was a bit dull.

Brigid B.

Yelp
A chill and sunny vibe for afternoon drinks and lunch at CitySide Tavern. Cute and tasty drinks, with a reasonable price tag too! We got burgers and fries and fried pickles. The gluten intolerance was even risked for the fried pickles...dare I say worth it! Burgers were good and hearty, nothing too special. Fries were crispy and fresh. Overall would recommend this spot for an afternoon lunch!
