Civillian Hotel is a true NY gem! The ambience fits the area so well, not to mention the great location it’s in. Everything was clean and pretty to look at. The room was small but it didn’t bother me much as the view was great. I loved the staff as they were sweet and accommodating. They were able to check my bags complimentary while our room was being prepared. Jazz night in the cocktail room was my favorite. I will be staying here every time I come to NY!

We booked the Civilian Hotel for our honeymoon and my birthday because it looked like a gorgeous hotel in a fantastic location. The hotel was also highly recommended by a friend who stayed there before. We were blown away by the stunning decor and the exposed brick facade when we arrived. Our bedroom was lovely and cosy. Our honeymoon was made extra by staff who wrote a lovely congratulations message to us on our mirror in the Irish language - that really meant a lot to us! We found the staff so lovely and accommodating. We had cocktails in both bars - the top floor bar has incredible views of skyscrapers! We also had brunch in the restaurant on my birthday which was delicious. |The noise from the nightclub was only audible on Friday and Saturday, but the position of our bedroom made it not so bad. |We'd a really wonderful time visiting New York and we'd love to stay in the Civilian again. This is an amazing hotel. The staff were beyond helpful and friendly. The building is so nice. The location is great. The rooms are wonderful and do a perfect job of using the limited NY City space. The view from our room was incredible. And they even went out of their way to make our anniversary special. This is the kind of hotel where all the details are paid attention to, and it shows. I loved staying here and will again.

I love everything about The Civilian. I've lost count of how many times I've stayed there this year! I love the staff and management team so much. I feel so safe and well cared for when I stay there. The hotel is immaculate. Always clean and sparkling. The rooms, hallways, bars, terrace are all beautiful and meticulously decorated with theater themed art and history! Make sure to check out the miniature set designs in the bar! Absolutely incredible!! |I have two more trips planned for this year. Loved it. Stayed for a work overnight. The service was excellent, and my room was beautiful with unique touches. I forgot my reading glasses and the front desk ran them out to my car -- I was able to reach the front desk immediately, which isn't always the case with a hotel. Anyway, the gesture was really above and beyond and I was grateful when I was in a pinch. Will def be back.

I visited NYC with my 22 year old daughter and spent 4 nights at the Civilian Hotel. The boutique aesthetic was just what my daughter was looking for - and as a Mum, I wanted clean, safe and quiet. We were both extremely happy!|Civilian is just a couple blocks west of Times Square, a few blocks north of Penn train station (how we travelled) and very close to a subway station. ||The staff were friendly and helpful. Our room was very comfortable and had all the amenities necessary.||We ate supper in the restaurant and found the food to be delicious and the service excellent. ||We wil be back!

During a recent business trip to New York, I had the pleasure of staying at The Civilian Hotel, and it exceeded all expectations. From the moment I arrived, the staff was warm, cheerful, and incredibly accommodating. Their hospitality was top-notch, and the attention to detail was truly impressive. They even held my bags both before check-in and after checkout while I explored the city, which made our stay even more convenient. The hotel’s amenities are a real treat—there’s a restaurant on the first floor that’s perfect for breakfast, brunch, lunch, or dinner and a rooftop bar that’s ideal for winding down after a day in the city. The location is unbeatable, especially for anyone wanting to be close to Times Square and other iconic spots. Great staff, clean good location. The GYM co operation is cool. Take care of anything u need on the spot. The small room (12 m) is too small and didn’t work for a couple with suitcases. Great place for mid town.

This hotel has got all that you need especially if you plan on being out and about a lot. The location is super convenient with tons of restaurants, coffee shops, and small markets within just a few steps away. The lobby is pretty narrow with not much else but the check-in desks, but the staff here are professional and on top of things.The elevators are a tad old and a bit slow, but that seems to be pretty common among many of the small boutique hotels I've stayed at in NYC. I was super excited when I was told I was getting a room upgrade with view of the river. Seeing that my room upgrade was still on the small side, I can only imagine how small my room would have been otherwise. But the room was clean and bed was comfortable, which are the most important factors to me when it comes to enjoying my stay. During this trip, I was out of my room all day most days but it was always nice to come back to a clean room with great air circulation during these hot summer days. Overall, def a convenient hotel to book and a decent price point.

I stayed at Civilian Hotel for two nights in April and had a great experience. I was able to check-in early for a small fee (very reasonable and happy with this). My single room was small but just fine for a solo traveler. This is a boutique hotel - a queen size room, small space for sitting, luggage area, a place to hang up my coats and a bathroom. There was a walk-in shower and bathroom had everything I needed. Front desk didn't always answer their phones as they were likely busy but they did comply with my wake up call requests (both mornings). My hotel view wasn't anything spectacular but I didn't mind too much. Modern and clean - great location and central to NYC. Close to the subway, markets and restaurants! I would stay here again if I were traveling solo. Haven't stayed at the double rooms but I'm sure they're very similar. Thanks for a good experience.

4.5* Overall an excellent place to stay, centrally located and right near the subway line and many Broadway theaters for about $160 per night with taxes, a steal by Manhattan standards.. Room was clean and bed was comfy with free coffee and tea in the mornings. The room we had , a cozy queen, is best for those not wanting to spend more then sleeping hours in their room as it is tiny --basically the bed and no additional space to move around really. I am taking off 0.5 star for the shower which had no door and water went everywhere in the bathroom after showering. But still rounding up.

Only went to the rooftop for drinks, but had an amazing time. Really great Happy Hour specials, excellent service and attention to the customers and beautiful breathtaking views. Definitely a go to if you want to impress a date or experience something special while visiting. Did I mention STRONG drinks?

Located in NYC's Theater District (close to Times Square), this was a comfortable 4-night stay during a recent trip to New York. PROS: They have multiple (paid) options for early and late checkout, but they'll also hold your bags free of charge. The front desk personnel were always very friendly and made sure you were well taken care of. The hotel is located walking distance from several subway stations, so it's very easy to get around the city. And, although we didn't get to try either, there's a chic rooftop bar and onsite restaurant, which are both very convenient when traveling. CONS: When we first arrived, our room's AC was at 78 and we couldn't do anything to change it. They promptly sent a tech to our room, who brought it down to our requested temperature of 67. However, out of fear that we'd mess something up, we never touched it again. Our friends had similar AC issues. Also, the rooms are incredibly small. That's NYC for you, but the layout was quite awkward with the bed pushed all the way to the window/wall and a small stand next to the bed taking up much-needed space. For two people, it was awkward to get around. I also haaaaaate showers that aren't fully closed and only have that half glass door because water gets everywhere. Oh, and the door to the bathroom was frosted glass, which is also awk for a small room. Finally, the hotel is POPPIN' on Friday and Saturday nights which makes their (already slow) elevators a nightmare since one is reserved exclusively for the rooftop bar. I got this room with a Black Friday deal, which made it worth it. Don't know if I'd pay full price though.

This is my new favorite hotel, I happened upon it the last time I was in NYC and this time it was just as amazing. The rooms are themed after different Broadway shows and are so clean and nice, right in Hell's Kitchen.

Stayed here on a quick little trip to NYC. The location to Time Square and theaters were amazing. The check in process had some snafu's - my room wasn't ready at check in time, and after a long day of traveling this was very frustrating. Jesus at the front desk was very patient and helpful and got me in another room even though it was smaller than the one I booked. The cozy room was indeed cozy- and the AC was not working. They came in about an hour and "fixed" it but after leaving to go to dinner and coming back... it was not fixed. Another call to the front desk and they moved me to my original larger room with working AC. I would definitely stay at this spot again, it had a lot of really great features. Only downsides is the wait for the elevators sometimes.

Repeat guest here Stayed at the Civilian for a second time and decided it deserved an updated review. This time we were with a toddler and the hotel passed the family checklist. They were so kind to leave a note on our mirror as a returning guest and make us feel as comfortable as possible. Every staff member that our toddler interacted with was so kind and patient with her. This time around they had the rooftop bar, Starchild, open and as a heads up you can hear the music if you are 20+ floor (not sure how far down you can hear the music). On a Saturday night, it's open until 2 am. This could be a con for some, but it wasn't for us. Our toddler stayed asleep and we were able to sleep fine (if you use any device for white noise you wouldn't be able to hear the music). I promise it's not that loud from the 21st floor, also you are blocks away from Times Square. My spouse did visit the rooftop bar/lounge and he said it was a nice enclosed area (during the winter) that does have a terrace or two. The drinks are on the higher end price wise, but as I mentioned in my last review - it's expected. Especially at an upscale establishment, like the Civilian! He tried an OnlyFans Martini and said it was amazing! Trust me when I say a higher view is WORTH it. This is exactly what I wanted for my family and the Civilian pulled through! The views are breathtaking of the Hudson River, with the skyline surrounding. Our toddler was in awe of the large, wall size windows. The motorized blinds are the perfect touch (two options. Regular privacy and/or blackout). The windows do open a pinch, which is a cheery on top for me to be able to get some fresh air into the room. I 100% look forward to our next stay, we have already been planning it. Civilian is our preferred hotel in that part of NYC and I cannot thank the staff more. Shout out to Megan, Percy, and Lisa.

I love the hospitality here. The receptionist who checked us in was so helpful and friendly. I wish I asked for his name. He checked us in on 10/14 1PM. He has blonde hair. Very genuine person. Every time we pass by him he always has a smile on his faces and never fails to greet us. I love how their doors open with hand motion sensors so I don't have to touch the door handles. When you first enter the lobby there's a heater which feels tremendously amazing after being outside in the cold. Our room was small but that's expected in NY. It was small but comfy. Had an amazing view. Blackout curtains. Dry bar hair dryer was available. Bathroom is cute and classy. I love the fact they have a cocktail room, restaurant, and a roof top where u can see a glimpse of NY.

This hotel is uniquely decorated to mix comfort and style with a step away from the sterile chain hotel rooms. Conveniently located to all of the Hells Kitchen glory, it's a quick walk to clubs, bars, restaurants and the subway. The staff is exceptional in every way, ready with solid recommendations for whatever random food you want. The pricing structure is cool too. Pay for what you need. Just want a hotel room and that's it? Pay less.z if you want all the frills with breakfast, gym access and daily housekeeping? Pay more. Add options A La Carte so your paying for what you use and saving on what you don't. 10/10 would recommend and will be back!

Decided to do a long weekend with my husband in New York and decided to stay at the civilian. I really like the location of the hotel because most of our activities would be in Manhattan this place allowed us to either walk short distances or catch the subway quickly. Everyone that we came in contact with that worked there was friendly and check in was quick. My only issue is the cozy room really is cozy. It's very small. Room basically is just a bed with little walking space around it. Since it was only for three days and we were only there to sleep and go it worked. Also there was something strange going on with the a/c. It would be super cold at night no matter what we did to the thermostat and then around 2 in the morning it would jump 10 degrees It's own.

The Civilian Hotel is beautiful boutique hotel located 5-7 min walking distance from Time Square. Their rooms are aesthetically pleasing, efficient and functional (tv's are equipped with google chrome cast which is extremely convenient!). Lobby Floor - equipped with a swanky restaurant; need to try next time! 2nd Floor - they also have a cocktail room as you go a spiral staircase (there is also a happy hour, but I can't recall the times) Starchild Rooftop Bar & Lounge - be sure to stop in for a cocktail or 2 or 3! Came up during sunset and hung out for a bit - was nice a beautiful view day & night. Overall, I'd give Civilian Hotel a 6/5 if I could - highly recommend!

Overall, I had an nice stay at The Civilian. The room was clean and the service was great. The only reason I rate it 4 stars is because: 1. The elevators were out of service and we had to wait 10-15 min to get to our room. 2. Our room was really small! I booked for my partner and I and we had a hard time moving about the room.

Great location near the theater district and Hell's Kitchen. Rooms are small but artfully designed. Great views from the upper floors. Hotel bar had good selection but service a bit slow and it was oddly warm in there. Easy online pre-check in process made actual check-in a breeze. Front desk staff funny and friendly. Only missed having a coffee maker and maybe a bottle of water in the room. I'd stay again.

I found the Civilian Hotel on Yelp and wasn't quite sure how it would be considering the very few reviews at the time; but we decided to give it a chance and book for our time in NYC. First and foremost, you really can't beat the location - we've been to the city a number of times, so I personally didn't care as much about being near Times Square or Broadway as much as being near close access to a subway station. You really can't beat somewhere that has access to basically all the trains, and this hotel was well within close walking distance to all access we needed. The hotel itself is nice. The lobby is small but very modern. They have a second floor bar with a few small tables and little walkout area. When you book, make sure to check the website to see if they have any offers (ex - free breakfast, early check-in, etc); with the standard reservation you really just get the room, if you want anything additional, it is for all charged .. a list of all the extras is available on the website. The room itself was fine, small which was very much expected for the city, so that didn't bother us. I'd say the shower was probably the most inconvenient since it didn't have a full closing door so the entire bathroom ended up getting all wet. Most of the staff members were friendly, not so much the gentleman at the bar who was there at breakfast time. Also the breakfast itself wasn't anything special so if you're wondering if you should pay to get that, I'd recommend skipping it. Overall, we were able to get what we needed and for the location, this hotel was a good deal. I'd consider staying here again.

I'll start with the pros that should help you decide if you want to stay (things important to me): - amazing location by all the broadway theaters and basically a block away from times square. also walking distance to many subway lines - very clean and modern hotel - opened up just this year in 2022! while a con is the room is small, it also comforts me to know that a small room means they can do a more thorough job cleaning it hopefully! - the most comfortable hotel comforter I've ever used. honestly it might be even more comfortable than my comforter at home, and I thought that was comfy. - price was very competitive, especially since we stayed 3 nights including a sunday, so they have a 3rd night free deal on their website! - lovely windows by the bed - waking up to a view. also great strong air conditioning - we went during the 90 degree heatwave last weekend - nice lounge area and restrooms on the second floor, but we weren't told about it, so we didn't take advantage of it at all. - free happy hour 5-6pm in the lobby on some days for some wine - we never partook but sounded nice! - can use their mobile app to request stuff like new towels or for them to take our your trash etc. Now the cons (for your consideration, but none of them were dealbreakers for me): - the room is tiny. smaller than most cruise rooms even. but they use the space well. if you have two luggages though, you'll have to only keep one open at a time and the other tucked under the bed. - the shower has no door, so be prepared to switch out the bathmat/floormat after two showers or take shorter showers - if you get the queen room, person sleeping closest to the window has to climb over the other person to get out of bed. so make the person who has to pee the most sleep towards the bathroom, not the window. - not much of a closet, so you'll have to make do with 5 hangers in a very narrow space - the elevators are a joke. this was the only real con to me to be honest. there are two elevators only and they are slow and always full in the AM. definitely try to get a lower level room and walk down instead and only use the elevators to go up. we stayed on the 13th floor, but we ended up walking down one of the days because we basically waited like 8 minutes for an elevator before we gave up. not sure why they have a service elevator when the guest elevators were also being used by service employees! I hope this pro and cons list helps you decide if you want to stay! I want to emphasize that given my number one priorities are cleanliness and location, Civilian definitely met my expectations and went beyond, and I would recommend them to most people in a heartbeat! I probably wouldn't recommend it for families though, just given the size of the rooms, but otherwise, it is AWESOME!

Point: this is a must-stay for anyone looking for a wonderful hotel that's just blocks from the adventures that NYC offers. Last week my husband and I arrived to NYC for my husband's conference for work (luckily this teacher is on summer break and we were sans kids for this trip!). That being said, his company paid for the first few nights then we paid the remainder - choosing to stay in the city for a few additional nights for a #parentsweekend. I found the Civilian Hotel through a simple Google search and found it to have the vibe we love and distance from all the things we looked forward to doing. Both my husband and I have been to NYC on separate occasions and this would be the first time either of us have been in years. Here are my pros and cons from our stay: PROS: + It's a beautiful modern hotel that is clean, has friendly and attentive service, and is within walking distance of everything from Times Square, Broadway, and food hotspots (oh, the food!). + Front desk staff are super friendly and helpful for items like more bath towels (see cons below...) + Hotel bar has solid drinks and was a fun place to go either before our outings or have a nightcap before heading back to our room. + We did not hear other rooms/guests or outside noise, too. The hotel has a fire station right near the corner, but all things considered we were happy that it was a quiet stay. + We found the hotel to be fairly priced based on the room we booked (queen) and the fact it was Pride weekend (i.e. peak summer season). + Comfortable and clean beds! Loved the mattress we had and found we slept ever so well! What didn't bother us: + Room size. A lot of people have different creature comforts (you can read a few on other reviews for the Civilian), but for my husband and I we knew the room size would be smaller than a typical hotel room but didn't mind it at all. After all, we love traveling and tiny homes are really fun for us - so the smaller room size wasn't a problem. They make use of the space and that large window gives to great views morning to night. + Room design. I guess we are the few that didn't mind it at all to "climb over each other" to get in and out of bed. Really...it's not that big of a deal. + There are actually 3 elevators available, so we didn't have a problem waiting for an elevator to arrive (we were on the 17th floor). CONS: + The shower/bathroom design. Although the water pressure is a huge plus for me, I was confused by the lack of shower door (there is a glass panel, but that's it). Showers quickly made the entire bathroom wet (showering with the door open helped with the steam). + Lack of hooks. There is a very narrow "closet" where you can hang shirts, shoes, and the sofa has drawer space underneath. All of that was great, but we would have enjoyed more hooks to hang clothing items (for travel we utilize a lot of wash/air dry items). It would have been nice to have more space to air-dry or hang our clothes. + Doesn't really count as a con...but wished we had a Roku TV just so we could have the comfort of our own streaming when in our room. However, I enjoyed a bunch of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives episodes ;) Next time I will just travel with our personal Roku. All-in-all we LOVED our stay and look forward to returning in the future. With that said, depending on how you like to travel will determine if the Civilian Hotel is the right choice for you. For us, we loved that we had every basic need met, everyone was so pleasant, and we were a hop and a skip from everything we wanted to do.

I'm torn giving this review. Part of me appreciates some of the service that we received by the front desk. The black gentleman with the beard that is very polite was awesome. A couple of other employees were very nice as well. But these assets are sullied by the actions of the cleaning crew (specifically, one person) along with our ignored requests for new sheets or trash service. Not sure why we had to request new towels and linen multiple times before it was done but being called a liar, to my face, by a housekeeping member was unbelievable. The hotel does have decent views to the south and surrounding areas and is in walking distance to many things and attractions. Being 6'3" tall, the room felt very confined but it may be our perspective. If you don't mind being really close to your significant other, repeatedly asking for services that normally come with a hotel stay, and don't run across that housekeeping employee with the tattoos, you could have a great stay.

Location, location location, stayed this weekend for a date night with my wife and to catch a show. I'm in my forties so I'm not cool anymore or a young hip New Yorker but I will say this place is pretty cool, didn't know how new it was but they did a nice job. We had room on the20th floor, room was tiny !! But hey how about the view out the window and how much time are you actually in the room. My wife thought the room was decorated really nicely and I enjoyed the bed was not your typical hotel mattress very comfy . We missed the breakfast but we did not miss the 2nd floor bar !! Very nice staff and they were getting slammed at bar but the bartenders were on point. They Made my wife a delicious gin drink and I enjoyed several vodka drinks. Pricing as expected for where we were. We will return and again what a spot for a quick getaway . Location location .

Made our trip so fun! This hotel was a gem, the staff was great and super friendly. The rooms are a little small, but it didn't phase us because we were out for basically all of the trip. The view from our room was amazing, and the location was super convenient, they also have a rooftop bar that was super fun. They had a couple events throughout the weekend, that unfortunately we didn't go to, but next time!

We will be back! This place didn't have any public reviews when we found it online. We went with our instincts and booked it because of its proximity to Time's Square and so many of the attractions we hoped to see while we were in town. The staff greeted us and made us feel welcomed from the moment we got the doors. The modern lobby was warm and inviting. Baggage storage was available until time for checkin came so we were free to start exploring. Our rooms were comfortable and afforded great views of NYC. Love love loved the location of this hotel! Definitely old world New York feel and luxurious detail. Tiny hotel room made large suitcases with winter gear challenging but doable. Super friendly staff and was decorated to the nines for the holidays. Would stay again!

This hotel gets high marks for location and the pleasant staff. Having stayed in NYC many times you have to be careful with some boutiques as rooms can be small. We opted for a larger king bed room. My friend who I've know many years is like me where it takes a lot for us to complain. Room was hot. We asked the staff several times and while they sent someone to the room, it did not help. It was humid over the weekend and even though it did sort of work the humidity in the room was bad. You can tell by quick condensation on a cold bottle. We spoke to other guests that said, the hallways had all the cold air. J agree and felt they limited the thermometer to 77 degrees. It never went below and system turned off. Bathrooms have no threshold on shower. I am used to it having traveled through eastern and western EU extensively, but my friend was not and I got her point with not drying your hair after a shower in the bathroom. The bathrooms have sliding doors and you can see your female friends even with how the glass was situated. No biggie for us, we're adults. They give you a squeegee and in EU you rarely get the. I loved the sense of honor with the sign, if you feel under water, call house keeping or use squeegee. Big points for location, staff was nice, and hotel was quaint. Rooms were clean. I get prices in NYC, but the room was hot and humid, even for me. The hallways were perfect with nice cools temps and pictures from Broadway. Be patient if you ask for ice. I am one that tries not to bother staff, but after and hour and three reminders we got some. Would have be faster to buy it at corner store. So for that, I took stars away. For 800/ night I would have expected better. The roof club was awesome and breakfast was not bad as well.

The hotel is located in the heart of the theater district within walking distance (literally) of the best broadway shows in NYC. We reserved the "cozy" room, queen size bed. The room is small or cozy as they call, great for two people. Bathroom was great and the views from our room was fantastic. We could see people walking on "The edge" by Hudson yard. The only thing I was a bit annoyed at the $15 fee for housekeeping if we wanted our room cleaned. They also have a nice $20 per person breakfast buffet on the second floor bar area with amazing patio views. It was snowing when we stayed, still got great pics while we have breakfast. Customer service was top notch! Plenary of toiletries to go around.

I brought my daughter to NYC for the first time and we had a wonderful stay! The staff here are warm and helpful, the rooms are clean and quaint, and the location is right near restaurants, shopping, a local grocery store, and Times Square. If you're going to Broadway plays (we saw three) this is a great location. We had a great time and we're treated like VIPs . They even began our visit with a special birthday message and sparkling beverage for my daughter! View from our 24th floor was awesome!

Pros/Cons appears to be popular so I'll start with the ones most noticeable. Cons: 1) Room size is small. Know this going in. 2) Be careful showering since there is no door to prevent water on the floor. 3) Only 2 elevators so you need to give yourself time to catch one, they can be slow. Pros: Everything else. The location is central to anything you want to get to in NYC. Close to the subways, walking distance from anything in midtown, right in the middle of the theatre district, restaurants are everywhere. They give a complimentary pass to an excellent gym right across the street. For those who are gym-centric this is an excellent perk. This is the first thing I made use of when we checked in. Very nice. The service here is insanely good. The staff is super-friendly. The gentleman at the front desk was consistently helpful. The 2nd floor bar had a beautiful balcony and again, the service was excellent. Even the night doorman was great. We chose Civilian since we live further out and needed a place to launch from for events we had planned on Wednesday night. I don't think we could've made a better choice. Once you get the hang of the facilities and the total quality of the hotel, the room size becomes a non-factor. You simply get used to it. Stay on the lower floors if you plan to be in and out of the hotel often though. 5 stars. Will go back when we plan our next event.

A hidden gem 2 blocks from Times Square. The ambiance is perfect and the rooms are exactly as you'd imagine, compact and plush. We went with the Cozy Queen and cozy it was. The hotel staff was also great. Everyone was friendly, helpful, and very pleasant. The restaurant/lounge was dreamy and rich. The decor/design from the lounge though out the hotel set the tone. If Donald Draper stayed in Times Square for a night, this may be his choice. One thing I really appreciated about this place was pre check-in online and checkout was effortless. The view from our room on the 22nd floor was great to wake up to. The room was spotless, and suited our needs for this particular trip which was to be out roaming the huge city, eating great food, and discovering new experiences. (End daydream speech) Back to the room, it was visually awesome, clean, quiet, and entertainingly small. The space was brilliantly used but I have to say that if you're over 6' tall your going to have fun in there. Not because the ceilings aren't high enough because they are, but because you may bend down to grab a towel from under the sink and hit your bum on the wall all while trying not to bump your head on the sink, toilet, or door. And in the room if there is two of you it'll be like a game of Tetris trying to get dressed hahaha it was so much fun. I'd stay here every time I visit Manhattan. Do be aware that they charge about $20/hr for late checkout and $20 for each room cleaning. I think it should be included but I understand. The location to Times Square was literally two blocks away where you're surrounded by restaurants, shopping, Central Park, and lots of coffee to start your morning. I recommend visiting "Angelina's Bakery" right around the corner, I reviewed it, check it out! The subway to uptown and downtown is very convenient or you can rent a metro bike and embrace the NYC essence. Anywho, I'd highly recommend this quaint hotel for your visit if you're solo, or with a partner if you don't plan to spend much time in the room. It's pretty close to perfect.

It was wonderful! I wish I'd had more time to enjoy it (was running around the city a lot while there), and I did not know until check-in that the Academic Ambassadors rate included breakfast, fast wi fi, and gym access (so I did not get to take advantage of those perks). But the bed was super comfy and cocoon-like. The shower had soothing, strong water pressure, and the AC worked great. I also appreciated the room-darkening shades. The staff was helpful and friendly, and the second floor lounge/terrace was charming. I'd definitely stay there again!

I needed a place ASAP in NYC when my daughter's emergency room visit forced us stay in NYC an additional 2 nights. Booked this through Booking.com (Basic package) at a really decent rate. I had read that the higher floors had great views , so I messaged them through the app, and they sent me the pre-checkin via email where these special requests could be made. I had a King room (ADA) on the 13th floor. Although my basic package did not include an early check-in (3 pm), I received a message around 3:00 to let me know my room was ready. Brand new and beautiful hotel (not all amenities where quite open yet- restaurant and roof top bar), but the Sunday-Tuesday happy hour to compensate was a nice touch. The bed was absolutely divine and the views of the Hudson were awesome! We'll be back.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Civilian Hotel. We were just here for a weekend to catch a show at the Lyric Theater and this was the perfect spot. Walking distance to the theater and some great restaurants and a short Uber to Harry Potter NY. The line at check in can get a bit long, they are pretty good at making it move fast, but I would highly recommend checking in and out on the app to avoid it entirely. The hotel is beautiful, we loved our room. It was just what we needed - a comfortable bed, a hot shower and a nice little view of midtown. I'm also a fan of something a bit different from regular hotels, and this fit the bill. The bar looked beautiful, but we will have to check that out next time!

We just returned from a 4 day trip. There was alot to like about the Civilian but I would only stay again if I were traveling solo or for just a night or two. The good: It was new, clean, with chic furnishings. The queen (double?) bed was comfortable, the plumbing, elevator and hot water all worked great. View was wonderful and there were nice touches to the room...electronic shades, dry bar hair dryer and refillable water bottle. It was quiet at night and we slept well. The bad: The cozy room was so tiny and cramped for 2. My husband and I are barely average sized people and were running into each other constantly. We had two carry on sized pieces of luggage but it was hard to keep things organized as there was just really no where to store anything, and it got old pulling suitcases out from under the bed when we needed something. Would have loved a few well placed hooks by the entry door and the small drawers that were available were hard to open. The mattress would also shift if we leaned against it as we were trying to get things out of our suitcase. Bar was extremely expensive and common areas were limited. Wanted to take some pictures on the spiral staircase and in the blue room but they were both blocked off during our stay for some reason. We paid for early check in and 2 pm late check out due to a late flight, but it was a bit of a runaround at check in where they said they didn't have a record of it ( but then they did), and an employee was knocking on our door asking when we were leaving at 11 am on check out day. Felt rather disconnected. Staff was otherwise friendly and stored our luggage before we left. All in all, it wasn't a bad stay but in that price range I'll probably keep looking next time.

Staff was pleasant and hotel room was clean. Rooms are teeny tiny but have great water pressure. Keep in mind there is no mini bar/coffee/water/bathrobe/drawers/desk, etc. It's just a bed and a bathroom. Which was odd to me, but I guess it helps keep the rooms free of pests. Network was not-secure so unfortunately I was unable to work from the hotel.

I would avoid this hotel at all costs. What they try to make up for their design they fail at all actual aspects of a hotel. For example, no shower door so the water goes everywhere. Their elevator situation is horrendous. 2 small elevators for 15 floors of rooms. I had to wait 10 minutes to go down six floors and was late for my Uber which cancelled, and then had to call another that was severely delayed. The staff was completely unhelpful.

Stayed here during our visit from California. The staff is friendly but the room was not worth it. We got a 'cozy queen room' but it was everything but!! ROOM WAS TINYYY! SHOWER WAS TINYYY WITH NO DOOR AND WATER SPLASHED EVERYWHERE!! I understand it was the coldest weekend they had in 5 years but it's was freezing in the room and the heater didn't work. Needless to say, I do not recommend. Our other party had luckily gotten the king and it was spacious. Pricing was the same and I know it was a third party company but I called to upgrade and they didn't want to try. Don't recommend the smaller rooms at all!

This place is so charming! Yes, the rooms are small (I mean, it's New York), but they are impeccably clean and the whole place is kept up well. It's close to Times Square, theaters, Rockefeller Center, and Restaurant Row. But the best thing about it is the staff. They are amazing: gracious, friendly, patient, and helpful. Stay here! You will be glad you did.

Just finished staying here and it was cute. The rooms are very small no hangers unless you get one of the bigger rooms so if you need to hang a suit or any dresses will be hard since there is no closet. Bathroom is very nice only con was shower to small and water will Leak on the floor if not careful. Here is why I give this place 3 stars instead of 4 or even 5. Check in: we booked through hotel Tonight and instead off arriving Friday night which is when we booked it we just arrived Saturday morning which we thought would be fine since we paid for two days and that should be enough to hold our room we were wrong they put us down as a no show and basically gave our room away they luckily they had a room for us to fit us in which didn't make sense cause we booked two days we should have always had a room. Check out: On the morning of check out at 8am it sounded like someone was trying to get into our room since the rooms are so close to one another I thought it was next door they then came with housekeeping and I realized they were trying to get int our room they knocked we said we were in there and they left they woke us up out of our sleep. At 9am we got a call from front desk asking us who we were and I said the room is under Michael some rude lady was on the phone and asked are you Michael and I said no but that is who the reservation is under she then said that is not what she had on the system and that she would look into it. We went back to bed for an hr but my bf was so upset cause we def weren't prepared for people walking into our room had they made it in. When we went to the desk to check out they said we had already done so which we don't know how. I'm not sure what happened but that was the worst Check in and check out ever please do better. I know it's a long review.

Pros: *Amazing location (right by Times Square). *Top tier service from their ground floor restaurant. *Rooftop bar (more of a club for younger people). *Left a bottle of champagne & a $50 credit to the hotels restaurant as a birthday gift for my gf. *Quaint and cozy room with an amazing view. *Sound proof windows so you don't hear the noise from the city. Cons: *I reminded the staff twice before arriving if they could leave a little birthday surprise for my gf and then 3 more times after we arrived until they delivered something on our final day. *The rooms are as advertised but somehow still felt smaller then expected. *Half of the shower is just open which makes it impossible to not get water everywhere on the ground. *Water from the "hydration station" was murky. Would not recommend drinking from. Overall, I would recommend staying at this hotel because of the nice service, clean hotel, and perfect location.

Style over substance........ Stayed at the Civilian "Cozy" room for five days. Aside from a 9"x18" side table there were no surfaces available to do anything! There were a bunch of Faux drawers that were decorative, but unusable. The only serious storage was under a padded bench next to the bed. No one cleaned the room while I was there, in spite putting of out the sign to do so. You could only get ice through room service....it came once and didn't the next time. Oh. and I had to put the ice bucket on the floor because of no table or desk. On the plus side, the staff was delightful, the location couldn't be better, and the bathroom was very nice. Would I "re-enlist" at the Civilian? I'll take my honorable discharge and search elsewhere next time I go to New York.

This review is about the above and beyond service I received from the front desk. Michael is the sweetest, most helpful hospitality employee I've ever had the pleasure of working with. He was so incredibly kind and eager to help that he truly made my day. His attention to detail and commitment to service assisted me in pulling off something really special and for that I cannot thank him enough! This experience gives me faith that excelsior customer service is not dead. I'd give 10 stars if I could.

This is now my go to hotel when my event is in the NYC area. The service and staff are fantastic. They cannot do enough to help. The location is perfect. The rooms and lobby are super clean. The rooms are small but if staying 3 days or less with people you like the rooms are comfortable. Highly recommend.

This is a Broadway themed hotel in the theatre district. The staff was super nice and very helpful. We stayed for 4 nights and had no problems. We felt very safe and the room was quiet. The only issue was that the rooms are very small. You pay a lot for it too. Be sure to check your room type. We had a bed jammed next to the window and a very small bathroom. There is NO closet space or space to eat or work. This hotel is perfect location to shows most are within a 10 minute walk.

The rooms were clean and bathroom was plenty spacious. Hotel staff was super friendly and helpful. Centrally located for ease of getting around NYC.

Found this hotel while walking past and I'm so glad I did. Good simple rooms with everything I need. Great bed and shower. Huge area on floor 2 to work when not in the room. If you need simple clean comfortable well run accommodation in a very central location choose here. The staff deserve a special mention- they are all just young lovely and friendly I add a few dollars extra to have my room serviced when it needs to be. I'm sharing this place with all my London friends. They could really benifit from having a bakery style a la carte breakfast option. Popping to floor 2 to get coffee and a bagel or pastry to go seems like a sensible thing to offer in this a la carte hotel. They do have a few staff issues where things don't get followed up but generally simple hotel simple service. I'd asked twice to see a couple of larger rooms so I could report comparison sizes to friends arriving next week but that didn't happen within a week of staying here. Got a good deal on booking.com but the hotel does offer good deals. Bar is only open weekends and they have free filter coffee in the mornings. Great good emporium nearby on 8th for fresh juice and good healthy food.

This boutique hotel was fabulous. The room was clean. The location was ideal, and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. This is the perfect spot to stay while visiting New York.

I am not in the habit of leaving reviews but felt compelled to do so after our stay. While the staff was lovely, the room was no bigger than a jail cell. You could not access both sides of the bed, meaning you had to climb over the person to get into bed. There was no closet (just four hangars behind a 4 inch space that was part of the sliding bathroom door set up that knocked the clothes off the hangars. No place to hang a coat much less a suit.) There was also no dresser, meaning no place to put your clothes. Well, except for a TINY little built in couch that was about a foot wide. No place to sit other than the bed because half of our clothes were on the mini seat and the other half had to be kept on the floor. Gross! Also no mini refrigerator? The half-glass bathroom shower looked cool, but splashed water all over the floor. No way to control the heat which was also blasting. Looks great in pictures, but NOT accommodating for travelers which is the point of a being a hotel:)
