The 25 Essential Montreal Sandwiches

"This longtime Mile End counter recently had a rebirth of sorts in Pointe-St-Charles, adding some Italian flavour to a once predominantly Irish, working-class neighbourhood. There are plenty of cold-cut options, including prosciutto cotto, Genoa salami, mortadella, and capicollo, but the Italian sausage and Porchetta sandwiches are the real highlights." - Erinn Blicher, Eater Staff

Former Mile End Favourite Boulangerie Clarke Has Been Reborn in Pointe-St-Charles | Eater Montreal

"Frank Servedio, son of Clarke’s founders, has given the Clarke name a triumphant return with Clarke Café in Pointe‑St‑Charles at 2483 Centre; I note he intends it to be a local sandwich shop where he won’t have to overcharge for lunch and where everybody feels comfortable. He’s hoping to become the neighbourhood’s Italian coffee‑maker, offering Italian‑style coffee alongside similar Italian sandwiches to the old place — classic salami, turkey and calabrese — plus new items like grilled chicken and porchetta; some salads, including pasta salad, will also be served. While the new Clarke won’t be baking bread as the bakery did, it will still offer pastries such as cannolis and chocolatines. The space, a former hair salon a stone’s throw from Charlevoix metro, has had a full makeover with wooden countertops and white tiling to feel timeless rather than trendy, and it’s more of a sit‑down, coffee‑shop vibe. Clarke Café is open at 2483 Centre from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekends." - Tim Forster

Google
Heard great things about this sandwich spot. Went in for a quick lunch to go. Got the chicken cutlet sandwich, arancini, and a Caesar salad. Service was friendly, but it took over 15 mins to get my order to go. After 7-8 mins, I gently mentioned the wait, and it still took rough that much more time to finally receive it. Given the many options for a good fast sandwich in the west, that was quite a let down. The food itself: the sandwich was good, albeit very noticeably salty. The cutlet was a good size, though the toppings were sparse and The provolone quite bland (while aware that provolone itself is a mild cheese). The arancini was lacklustre. All the said, the Caesar was surprisingly well made with a crispy lettuce, flavourful sauce, prosciutto cotto bits, generous parmesan shavings and large housemade croutons. Overall, open to trying it again but not exactly running back anytime soon.

Google
Amazing tiramisu — the sandwich (I had the fried chicken one) was nice too. The flat white was a bit too strong for my taste, but the tiramisu was definitely a hit!

Google
First time customer and my husband and I really enjoyed ourselves. I had the salami Genoa and he had the chicken cutlet sandwich. Both were delicious. The bread was fantastic, did not get soggy but also not too hard to eat. The coffee is really good as well. Special shout out to the staff who were very nice as well. We will definitely be back.

Google
We had a tiny wait in line, but seating was available. We were a party of 3 and at the end of the lunch rush. I went for a Calabrese Sangwich with a Brio on the side. Also had marinated eggplant and hot peppers in the sandwich with dijon and salad + tomatoes. Bread was great. The place has a great vibe, well executed interior, very friendly and professional staff, and of course, the food just great on the taste buds! This is a must visit place if you are in or around Point St-Charles (PSC).

Google
Came here on a Sunday morning for breakfast. The place was full but service was quick. Didn't have to wait too long for my food. It's located in a cute area with lots of street parking, but also very accessible by public transit. The food was great and I like how they offer free tap water as well. I've only ever been to this location, but would definitely love to come back again to try their lunch.

Google
Delicious sandwiches! They have a ton of choices but the base ingredients stay the same (mayo, lettuce, tomatoes) and you get 2 ingredients you can customize. The Frank way is what the owner would say is best to get with the particular sandwich you pick (a fun surprise!). I think their crispy chicken is so flavourful. The sandwich is also massive so you get quality and quantity. Lots of seating available.

Google
I recently visited Clarke Café (PSC), located at 1207 Rue Shearer, Montréal, QC H3K 1H8, and it's a pretty cool spot! 😎 The place is unassuming, with a simple and laconic (minimalist) interior, but it feels welcoming. It has a good number of tables for its size, which is convenient. 🛋️ tables What really stands out is the food! They offer a large selection of sandwiches, various baked goods, and all sorts of other tasty treats. 🥪🍰 You won't be short on delicious options here! The coffee is also really good – strong and aromatic, just how I like it. ☕👃 And, as a bonus, there are lots of beautiful staff members! 😉 It adds to the pleasant atmosphere. I definitely recommend checking out Clarke Café (PSC) if you're in the area looking for good coffee and a great selection of food in a relaxed setting! #ClarkeCafe #PSC #MontrealCafe #ShearerStreet #Griffintown #CafeMontreal #CoffeeLover #SandwichShop #BakedGoods #MontrealEats #LocalCafe #StrongCoffee #HiddenGem #MontrealLife #CafeVibes

Google
Clarke Café at PSC keeps things simple and gets them right. The sandwiches are the draw, packed, well seasoned, and made with ingredients that taste cared for. Bread has the right bite, fillings stay balanced, nothing soggy or overdone. Service moves quickly even when it gets busy, and the vibe stays relaxed. Good spot for a solid lunch without any hassle, consistently reliable and worth the stop.

Yelp
Confession: I'm not a sandwich fan. It's just not something I really grew up with... so, I don't HATE them, but they're also not my first choice for food. So, after eating (and enjoying!) my sandwich at Olive & Gourmando, and talking about it to a friend, he then recommended Clarke Cafe - said it was his favourite sandwich in all of Montreal. So, of course, I had to see if he was right. Y'know... he was. But let me tell you, this is an entirely different experience from Olive & Gourmando. These aren't the fancy, warm, pressed paninis from O&G. Rather, these are simple, quick sandwiches made with fresh ingredients. AND the coffee's pretty good too. My favourite so far is the salami sandwich with some sundried tomatoes and pickles... simple, and delicious. AND a GREAT deal! Perfect for eating by the canal on a nice summer day.

Yelp
Nice coffee shop in Pointe St Charles. Basic pastries. Coffee choices. They have sandwiches and cakes. They must have a following since they sell TShirts with their logo on. Big Italian flag means they come from a strong Italian heritage.

Yelp
Last meal for our trip to Montreal and we ended with a bang! Our family recommended this place for sandwiches and we tend to like sandwiches especially for lunch, but of course sandwiches can always be eating at any time. No discrimination! Clarke Cafe is fairly small inside and of course no seating to stay and eat as it's primarily a "to-go" spot especially during COVID. The line was fairly long so make sure you order by calling in and so you only really have to wait to pay. But like many have said, the line goes relatively fast. The menu is straight forward: sandwiches, dessert, and drinks. All sandwiches come include lettuce, tomato, cheese, and your choice of two (2) extras: eggplant, hot peppers, roasted red peppers, sundried tomatoes, black olives, and pickles. Definitely get your extras because these sandwiches are pretty bare. The sandwiches are actually fairly priced ($7CAD-$9.50CAD) and really large. We got porchettas (many many porchetta sandwiches as the rest of the fam wanted one each) and a chicken cutlet sandwich. If there's one thing to order here, it's a porchetta sandwich. It's meaty. It's tender. It's flat out delicious. The chicken cutlet was not great. It's flat and crispy, but not meaty enough. If I would suggest one thing for Clarke to do is not have such a flat piece of chicken. It just becomes a bit dry. If you like eggplant, definitely get the eggplant inside the sandwich as well as the roasted peppers which gives you a nice spicy kick. We also got some natas as the bf loves pasteis de nata (Portuguese eggtarts). The shell/tart was a bit chewy, the flan sweet and custardy, but tasted a little burnt. I would try one if you've never had it, but I've definitely had better. Gosh, I wish we had this place back home. Oh well, I guess it's something we'll look forward to next time we come back!

Yelp
Great sandwich! The only thing missing was a hot press to slightly grill it down. Beware, if you come during lunch hour, there will be a line up out the door. Luckily, it goes by pretty quickly. I got the chicken cutlet sandwich (minus cheese) with eggplant and spicy peppers (2 additional toppings to the lettuce, tomato and cheese at no cost). I was definitely satisfied even before eating the sandwich as they are all made after ordering. Also, I even saw the chicken cutlets being pulled out of the fryer (super fresh!). As for the actual sandwich, it is more than enough, especially for lunch. The flavours were really good and it tasted really fresh. The only downside was that the bread wasn't as hot as the chicken inside causing a lukewarm temperature overall. I think if they pressed it and/or heated the fresh loaf of bread, it would really make it THAT much better Overall, I can't wait to come back! Given the price point of roughly $10 a sandwich, the value is definitely there.

Yelp
If you're looking for a great sandwich and are tired of dagwoods or subway than you have found the right spot. Clarke's is originality a bakery that used to be located on st viateur but moved on down to Center street in PSC. After 37 years they decided to make the jump and come down to where the rent was cheaper and have a new crowd. I only got to come in quickly and pick up my food and leave because of the corona virus but they were both very nice guys who made my sandwiches with love. I added the menu because I didn't know how many options they had for sandwiches besides the pictures that people posted. You're welcome :) I love this spot and can't wait to come back on a less insane time in life to see them again.

Yelp
The staff and coffee and sandwiches are epic, unique and make life better. if anything could be equated to a spiritual experience I'd say Clarke Cafe is it. They have my devotion

Yelp
A simple and nice coffee shop is located in Pointe-Saint-Charles. It is nice to see a modern restaurant in this area. I see how slowly this area is evolving nicely. At the Clarke, Staff are friendly. Great list of coffees and tea, pastries and sandwiches are served there. I got a hot chocolate (perfect, not too sweet and not too bitter), and a cannoli (the filling was so so delicious and creamy). Recommended.

Yelp
Very happy w this new neighbourhood joint. Super tasty ice coffee slushee (!!!), lovely in-house made croissants and other breakfast bakery goods, and really wonderful sandwiches. The folks working there and the owner (who's baking or prepping in the back) are really lovely people. This will be a regular stop on the way to work going forward ;-)

Yelp
You definitely need to make time to go over to Clarke's and grab yourself a sandwich! Not only is that thing humongous, it's is downright sinful! I always opt for the chicken cutlet, add on some eggplant and chomp down to my heart's content. This is the kind of sandwich where you will need napkins! No regrets though! Grab a cannoli and coffee while you're at it but make sure to check them out! Offering takeout and delivery during confinement!

Yelp
There's a new Italian cafe and sandwich shop in Pointe Saint Charles, and it's so freaking awesome that I think I might be dreaming. They have incredible coffee (hot, iced or slush), they have cannolis, and they have some the best sandwiches I've ever tried in Montreal. I've only been there once, so I can't speak to everything, but the porchetta sandwich with dijonnaise, aubergine and pickles will change your life. But honestly, no matter what you grab, I'm sure you'll leave happy.

Yelp
I LOVE CLARKE SANDWICHES ALMOST AS MUCH AS I LOVE MY MOTHER. I was a regular at the old Clarke bakery on St-Viateur. I'm so happy they are back! I'm happy to report that the same sandwiches are still on the menu - and even better if it's possible! The bread has improved. The extras are now included. And the amazing taste is still there. Grilled chicken, italian sausage, PORCHETTA, YEAH BUDDY! I gotta have them all. You'll be seeing me at Clarke café. I'll be the guy scarfing down 3 sandwiches in the corner. And I'm not even ashamed of it. Can't wait to have the Arancino - and special mention for the Canolis! Yeah buddy. Ummmm ummm ummm. Party in your mouth.

Susan S.

Yelp
Delicious arancini, the best I ever had! Sandwiches satisfying , flavorful and you know made with love. Was here back in 2019 and so glad the quality and standards have not changed. Friendly and helpful staff. Wish Claire's Cafe was in Los Angeles....

Yelp
Great sandwiches! The bread is nice and soft and plenty of meat! The service was wonderful as well. We throughly enjoyed our lunch there.

Yelp
Good sandwiches (good filling ingredients although they could have a little bit more filling but what stands for me is the bread, very tasty, they don't do it themselves but it is fresh bread that is delivered to them every morning), good chocolate and coffees, pastry is very good. Nice place to work for a while with your computer.

Yelp
This place has good sandwiches and great service, awesome for a lunch spot during the work week. Food is ready quick, fairly priced, and the place is ok to chill and eat. My only gripe is the dog policy, I get it people like eating with their dogs but sometimes there are 5 diff pets in there shaking off wet hair from the snow and rain and sometimes barking at each other. Feels like a kennel some days, this kind of policy makes more sense for places that have a patio open in the summer and lots of space. If it wasn't for this super dog friendly policy I'd go back more frequently, but I don't want wet dog particles ending up in my food which is why I only go for lunch. If I see more than 2 dogs inside I skip out and go somewhere else.

Yelp
As much as I love living in Pointe St Charles, there are things that I miss living in the Plateau. One of these is the proximity of Mile End and particularly St-Viateur St. I loved visiting the street and relaxing there amongst the old cafés, St-Viateur Bagels and the different shops and bakeries. One of the old neighbourhood classics which I never got to visit was Boulangerie Clarke which closed in 2015. Fast forward to a couple of months ago and imagine my surprise when I read that Clarke's has been revived and not only that but it is now only a few blocks away in my 'hood! There is definitely a need for a good sandwich shop in PSC so this is a very interesting new addition to the neighbourhood. The old spot in Mile End was a bakery that also did bread on top of sandwiches and pastries. This new version has eliminated the bread but added coffee to make it more of a café than the original. In the display counter, there is a variety of salads and pastries available. All the sandwiches are made to order and run the gamut with different Italian coldcut options as well as smoked meat and grilled chicken. Having been a few times, I got to try a couple of sandwiches. Each sandwich is done up with a fresh loaf of bread and dressed up with tomato, lettuce, cheese and dressing (mayo, mustard, dijon or dijonnaise). There are also a bunch of extras you can add - eggplants, marinated peppers, sun-dried tomatoes, etc.. Portion wise, the sandwiches are solid and hearty. I love the bread - it has a airy and chewy texture but holds up firm to all the items in the sandwich. The meats are sliced by order and I find you can always tell the difference when that is done versus pre-cut. Once, I went with the Calabrese - nice heat - and then with the Italian Sausage - which is cut in a patty format to best with the sandwich. Both were excellent and exactly what you would want from a sandwich shop. From the pastry side of things, of course I needed to try a cannoli. The cream filling was excellent - rich and smooth. The shell was a little softened compared to an ideal crunchy one as the shells were pre-filled versus made to order. Still an excellent cannoli to enjoy. Point St-Charles was missing a good Italian-style sandwich shop and Clarke Café has filled that space perfectly. It is a much welcomed addition and I seriously hope that they can establish themselves in the same way the old version did in Mile End for 35 years. I may not be a coffee guy but I am certainly a sandwich guy - as such, I will stopping by pretty regularly. Hopefully the rest of my neighbourhood does as well. Cheers!

Yelp
I only got to take some of their food to go, but I will definitely be back for more! The croissant and other pastries were awesome! I really want to try their sandwiches now!

Yelp
I loved everything about this place except for the service. The 2 guys working there kept looking at us like we were going to hold up the place made us feel so uncomfortable. But I have to say the porchetta sandwich was to die for so good. But because if the service I'll never go there again I'll find another place that's more welcoming.

Yelp
We are superbly happy to discover Clarke in Pointe-Saint-Charles, kind of sleepy neighborhood, which just starts exploring its joie de vivre opportunities. The coffee shop is few blocks away from the local arena and it became quickly our go to place for hot chocolate after the free skating sessions on Sunday. We just had the cortado and it was delicious. Don't hesitate to try the traditional Italian pastries with your coffee. They are so exclusively good. For the hungry ones there are some Italian style sandwiches with fresh ingredients. The guys behind the counter are extremely nice and they approach their work with passion and care. Well deserved five stars!

Abigail M.

Yelp
Excellent excellent excellent! Such great, fresh quality food. It's like a taste of Italy! Such a great family atmosphere with fast service. Such a nice simple menu, so easy to order! Not only do they have amazing sandwiches, they also have amazing pastries that are to die for. And the coffee.... so rich and delicious. Wonderful cafe! I wish i could rate it even higher!

Yelp
What a great find! We were just walking down the street towards the metro and this place looked super cute. Their sandwiches are really good and made with super fresh ingredients on homemade bread. I had the turkey and my husband had the fried chicken. Would definitely come back!

Dustin D.

Yelp
Everything we had here on our recent visit was incredible! Thanks for the great coffee, sandwiches and service! Can't wait to return to Montreal and head directly to Clarke. Phenomenal!

Ana Paula S.

Yelp
Dog friendly, fairly priced and probably one of the best sandwiches (Italian Sausage) I've had in Montreal. On top of that, their single espresso lattés are fantastic. Quite busy and loud- isn't the best for work or study on the weekends.

Jason O.

Yelp
Fantastic costumer services, beautifully atmosphere and even better food! Best sandwich shop on the island of Montreal! Highly recomamd... it never disappoints.
