Last meal for our trip to Montreal and we ended with a bang! Our family recommended this place for sandwiches and we tend to like sandwiches especially for lunch, but of course sandwiches can always be eating at any time. No discrimination!
Clarke Cafe is fairly small inside and of course no seating to stay and eat as it's primarily a "to-go" spot especially during COVID. The line was fairly long so make sure you order by calling in and so you only really have to wait to pay. But like many have said, the line goes relatively fast.
The menu is straight forward: sandwiches, dessert, and drinks. All sandwiches come include lettuce, tomato, cheese, and your choice of two (2) extras: eggplant, hot peppers, roasted red peppers, sundried tomatoes, black olives, and pickles. Definitely get your extras because these sandwiches are pretty bare. The sandwiches are actually fairly priced ($7CAD-$9.50CAD) and really large.
We got porchettas (many many porchetta sandwiches as the rest of the fam wanted one each) and a chicken cutlet sandwich. If there's one thing to order here, it's a porchetta sandwich. It's meaty. It's tender. It's flat out delicious. The chicken cutlet was not great. It's flat and crispy, but not meaty enough. If I would suggest one thing for Clarke to do is not have such a flat piece of chicken. It just becomes a bit dry. If you like eggplant, definitely get the eggplant inside the sandwich as well as the roasted peppers which gives you a nice spicy kick.
We also got some natas as the bf loves pasteis de nata (Portuguese eggtarts). The shell/tart was a bit chewy, the flan sweet and custardy, but tasted a little burnt. I would try one if you've never had it, but I've definitely had better.
Gosh, I wish we had this place back home. Oh well, I guess it's something we'll look forward to next time we come back!
