Clay Pot Cafe (旺角煲仔饭）

Very authentic canton clay pot rice & Cha Chaan Teng (Hong Kong Style Café). Pork Patty Clay Pot Rice / Extra Egg / No Scallions / Less Rice Crust : I had no words to express my feelings when I heard the sizzling of the boiling clay pot, poked the over easy egg and let the yolk flow over the rice. The pork patty was naturally smooth and just simply marinated, standing out the original fragrance and umami of the meat. After being seasoned with drops of soy sauce, this pot of rice had finally reached its peak, coz saltiness can raise up umami and aroma. The egg, which was cracked into the pot and just perfectly solidified, mixed well with it. Everything was so so so correct. Hongkongnese Iced Milk Tea: To be frank, the aroma of tea was a bit light and pale. Reduce the amount of ice will help. I was happened to visit this restaurant at the Thanksgiving night from Somerville. As a Cantonese, surrounded by the familiar taste and language, a sentence just suddenly came to me that: "一茶一飯當感鄉土之恩every tea and meal we have shall thank for the giving from our hometown." It's hometown that cultivates what we are, as always shown in appetite. Local specialties will always comfort, and remind the original place, wherever we are drifted far.

Authenticity is the name of the game. Having brought two of my friends here for an afternoon lunch, they were stunned by how good the clay pot rice was! For them, it was a new dish. For me, it was nostalgia. The aromas from the pot were addicting, the crispy rice at the bottom and edges were great, and the rice itself was seasoned very well. Although they ordered small sizes, I’d recommend getting a medium if you’re a big eater (but they say it’s for two servings). Service is as expected: straightforward and quick, yet still slow enough to ask for dietary restrictions or specific changes to a given dish (e.g. I asked for no cilantro). If you know Cantonese, Mandarin, Taishanese, or one of a couple other dialects, it’ll help you for sure. Otherwise, don’t worry too much about it if you feel pressured to order fast. The lunch atmosphere was very hustle and bustle; I can only imagine what it’d be like by dinner time. Besides that, seating is limited and the room is quite tight so you might be asked to share a table if you have an odd number of people. Lastly, is the food-to-dollar ratio worth it? Kinda. If you’re not a big eater and don’t eat this often, then yes. If you are and do, then no. But if you want a taste of home *and* to share that experience with your friends, this is a prime place to visit.

I've been coming here when I'm in town for the last 5 years. Quality has been maintained, and now they have vegetarian claypot options too! I've had their minced pork patty claypot, their sausage+preserved meat claypot, their salted fish + chicken claypot and their vegetarian claypot. My preferred ones would be the minced pork patty claypot or the vegetarian claypot! You can also get add-ons, or if with a larger party, get a full plate of vegetables. Their doumiao (peashoots?) were fresh and tasty

The food is good, but it’s not friendly for people don’t know Mandarin. The menu translation doesn’t translate well. The English menu “sautéed chicken” BUT they will give you chicken hearts, gizzards, liver… When I asked the owner regarding this, she only responded it is what it is.

Absolutely love Clay Pot Cafe! This place has become one of my go-to spots for comfort food. Their casseroles and clay pot rice are packed with flavor — perfectly cooked with that delicious crispy rice at the bottom that you can only get from a real clay pot. You can tell they take pride in the details. The Cantonese milk tea is also top-notch — strong, smooth, and perfectly sweetened. Tastes just like what you’d get in Hong Kong. Authentic, cozy, and consistent. Highly recommend for anyone craving real Cantonese flavors!

Nice little chinese food in chinatown. Not many seats, may be 6-7 tables. Not crowd during weekday lunch, easily get seat for me. Clay pot rice is good, hot and crispy. Chicken with bone, meat with fat.

About as authentic as it gets. The clay pot rice and vegetable dishes were incredible. The woman running front of house was super friendly. Cramped space but it added to the experience.

This place is very small and has limited numbers of table. They serve clay pot rice with different toppings. The traditional Chinese sausage one is good but others can be a bit unflavored and require you to add pre soy sauce yourself. We added egg on one of the order and found the egg being overcooked. I can’t say they are awesome but I think out of what you can get from Boston, this is okay. The waitress reminded us about paying tips at the end, which I thought it’s a bit rude.
