I was sad when Various Artists shut down a few months back. The location was a bit out of the way, but the atmosphere, food, and beer were wonderful. Now the location has reopened as a burger joint from Shane Nasby, the person behind the food at Honeyfire BBQ in Bellevue.
The experience? From the parking lot, you immediately have a decision. Biergarten/dogs with people entrance (left) or non-dog/main entrance. Assuming the latter. Walking in the front door you see a register. If you want to go, this is your destination (although the bar can work, as well). If you want to dine in or have a brew and a burger, go to the bar. Actually either register can work for either choice, if we are being technical.
You are in a much more open and light environment than when this place was a microbrewery, but the decor works for a burger joint.
Assuming you sit at the bar, you will notice the current beer list from Untappd (NOTE: you can also use the venue feature on the Untappd app to peruse the beer list). You find out the breweries themselves curate the list, as each local brewery represented has its own tap. You will also notice Shane's favorite beer, Guinness as tap #24. There are two cideries represented on the list: Diskin's (WeHo area) and Brightwood (no taproom at this time), a hard kombucha brewer (Walker Brothers), and 21 local breweries (well BS Brew Works (Springfield) and Panther Creek (Murfreesboro) are local-ish and Blackberry is at least in Tennessee - but I digress).
The food? I found the Oklahoma Smash to be a bit too rich for my tastes, so I will have to go back. The cheese fries were wonderful, but I think I had a heart attack in my mind after eating all that gooey, fatty goodness. Talking to the manager, I found you can sub chicken on any burger (thick, grilled, deli chicken) and there will likely be a "secret" menu soon that covers some of the common subs - one mentioned was chicken on the Italian Stallion to make a semi-chicken parmesan type of sandwich.
Thoughts? I am not sure this is firing as a 5 star place quite yes, but the potential is definitely there. I am anxious to see if Shane is able to find a space in Bellevue, as it would be a lot shorter trip for me to get someplace over here instead of driving across town.
Summary: Attractive alone for the brewery curated beer list. Food is good quality and has nice flavors. Maybe a bit too rich for my blood, but I am going to reserve that judgement (and review if required) until I have had a chance to try other things.
