20 Ice Cream Shops in the U.S. with The Most Unique Flavors - AFAR

"A micro-creamery known for its playful split between boozy ‘naughty’ and spirit-free ‘nice’ flavors (an Oprah O List pick), with indulgent dairy offerings like Banana Rum and Hot Chocolate with Marshmallows alongside convincing vegan scoops such as Strawberry Crunch that avoid typical plant-milk aftertastes." - Alina Polishuk

The Business of Making Alcoholic Ice Cream With Clementine | Eater

"Known for its maple bourbon ice cream that captures all the flavor of bourbon without the bitter, boozy finish while still containing alcohol, this shop makes purpose-built alcoholic ice creams that can reach up to 18% ABV using a patent-pending infusion process developed over six months with product scientists. Owner Tamara Keefe runs both alcoholic (“naughty”) and nonalcoholic (“nice”) lines from a 5,000-square-foot microcreamery outside St. Louis and sells out of neighborhood storefronts—the first 500-square-foot shop opened in May 2015 on the edge of Lafayette Square—with two locations operating and a third opening in the fall. The brand follows a “cow to cone” approach using high–butterfat, grass-fed, pasture-raised dairy, rotates adventurous flavors (examples include St. Louis–inspired gooey butter cake, pandan, and grasshopper), offers vegan options like cashew salted caramel and coconut chocolate fudge, and built its reputation by supplying influential restaurants. Cautious about retail food-safety risks, the owner prefers growing by opening more scoop shops—aiming for about 25 over the next five to seven years—and has equipped her factory to scale when ready." - Monica Burton

10 Places for Boozy Ice Cream In the U.S. - AFAR

"A St. Louis small-batch parlor using local milk from grass-fed, pasture-raised, hormone-free cows to make all-natural ice creams; the menu splits into “nice” flavors (like gooey butter cake and manchego with truffles and honey) and adult-only “naughty” options (such as chocolate cabernet and maple bourbon with salted candied pecans). Scoops can be served in waffle cones or bowls with inventive toppings like Mike’s Hot Honey, candied bacon, olive oil, and cracked black pepper — and mixing naughty and nice is encouraged for balance." - Veronica Meewes

Google
Simply amazing. Every flavor here tastes like someone hand made it for you from scratch. If you like ice cream this place will rival any you've had anywhere and probably will be the very best. Great service. A quirky but cool location in the midst of a neighborhood. Feels like you hit a homerun with an undiscovered gem (even though it is totally discovered at this point). I've been coming here for years and have never been let down.

Google
How can naughty and nice ever be sold in one location? Clementine's is the answer. Such a great selection of ice cream and novelties. We actually went back the next day for more. Worthwhile the stop. Be sure to order enough to satisfy and not be overwhelmed. Remember not to 'drink and drive' if you decide to be naughty

Google
I am so glad I made the trip to visit Clementine's. Look nowhere else for ice cream. The variety is sensational (obviously I tried 85% of them) and it made it extremely challenging to choose which flavors to go with. I'm glad I went on my last night in town, it would be hard to know this place exists and not visit daily. Great staff, and incredible ice cream.

Ezra Baker

Google
Easily a top 5 ice cream spot—anywhere! Clementine’s nails it with both unique flavors and perfected classics. I had Espresso Royale and Salted Cracker Caramel in a cone—both were insanely good and disappeared before I could even snap a photo. Creamy, bold, and unforgettable. Parking was a bit tricky at this location, but absolutely worth the effort. A must-visit for any ice cream lover in St. Louis!

Google
Clementine’s is undeniably charming—locally loved, creative flavors, and a great atmosphere for a sweet treat. The staff is friendly, and you can tell a lot of care goes into every scoop. That said, for me personally, the ice cream leans a little too sweet. The richness and decadence are definitely there, but I find myself wishing for just a bit more balance. Still, if you’ve got a strong sweet tooth or love adventurous flavors, it’s worth a visit. And you can’t deny the passion behind what they do—it’s a true St. Louis staple.

Google
Delicious ice cream! Probably one of the best places for ice cream I've ever been. Very interesting flavors, along with staples. Staff was friendly and the environment was welcoming. If in St. Louis, definitely give this place a shot! Vegan options available. Open late, overall great!

Amanda Erickson

Google
Could be the best ice cream i have ever had. Wow. Everyone loved their ice cream so much that we bought pints on the way out. Pink champagne was light and refreshing, ooey gooey butter cake was decadent, strawberry shortcake, birthday cake, etc.

Google
This is a great and unique ice cream shop! The ice cream is high quality and delicious. Some of the flavors are the regulars you've come to love. But they have very unique options that are not your normal ice cream options. The shop has cool decor, and a great vibe. The team at Clementine's were very friendly and I wanted to say thank you for the excellence in customer service!

Yelp
Love having ice cream before dinner! We stopped by because we heard they had gooey butter cake ice cream. My friend and I decided to share one with 2 scoops- one the gooey butter cake and salted cracker caramel. Both were delicious. The gooey butter cake had actual cake pieces and they sell the cake itself too. We were tempted to get one but had a full cake from Missouri baking company and 2 slices from Parks. The salted cracker caramel had a good crunch and sweet and salty. It's a good mix because the saltiness balanced how sweet it was.

Yelp
Clementine's is an absolute must-visit in St. Louis! I was completely hooked on the Salted Caramel Cookies and Cream--hands down one of the best ice cream flavors I've ever had. Their selection is incredible, with something for everyone, from indulgent classics to unique, adventurous flavors. Fun and clean shop, and I visited at least 3. The staff is amazing--super friendly and patient, happily letting you sample as many flavors as you'd like. While visiting St. Louis, I found myself stopping by at least once a day because it was that good. If you're in town, don't miss out on this gem!

Yelp
Gooey Butter Cake Goodness. Clementine's is an ice cream oasis nestled in a residential area. Naughty & Nice is a great way to introduce customers to the boozy or non-alcoholic ice cream innovations. Sampled the Champagne Sorbet and my taste buds were delighted! What a tasty frozen treat. The Gooey Butter Cake is so delicious and their number one seller. Definitely a standout for STL.

Yelp
The original Clementine's location continues to be a favorite stop in our neighborhood. I'm embarrassed to say there was a month where my credit card statement shows nine visits! I hosted my best friend and her fiancé in from Chicago and they specifically requested a visit all three nights they were in St. Louis. Clementine's continues to innovate with delicious flavors, though if you want to sample new flavors, their larger CWE location is a better move. I also wish the four Worlds Fair Flavors had a longer run. The waffle cone flavor was lovely. Sample up to four flavors before you choose yours and ask the servers for their favorite flavors! My current favorites are Front Porch Mint Chip (with real mint flecks!) and the Strawberry Balsamic White Pepper. Those two are fantastic as a duo scoop as well! Keep in mind a lack of parking at this location makes a possible need to walk a bit on uneven sidewalks. There are not many spots to sit and eat since they closed their patio, so you'll have to take a walk to the park for a place to pause and eat and enjoy the scenery there.

Yelp
This is one of the best ice cream shops I've visited! The have a nice selection of unique flavors and I loved it! There is a nice little outdoor seating area and they allow dogs. Service was efficient and friendly. I can't wait to return and try more flavors,
google avatar

Rachel R.

Yelp
I loved all the fun flavors! What I really liked was that they didn't skimp on the mix ins. Good ratio of portions!!! Delicious. I didn't have flavored cones but I thought it was a great touch

Yelp
Cute little spot with some really yummy ice cream! We were in town for Christmas visiting family, and they raved about this place since they live down the street. On our last night there we headed over. It's a very small place, so I can see how lines can easily form. Parking also seemed kind of limited from the way we came. We went in around 7 pm on a Tuesday (day after Christmas), and there was only 1 other family inside. They offer samples of the treats so you can decide what you really want, and the spoons are reusable, so they are helping the environment! They have alcohol options and normal options. I opted for normal. I got a scoop of the salted cracker caramel and a scoop of the butter brickle. I think of the 2, the butter brickle was my favorite! I believe the 2 scoops were something like $8, which I thought was pretty good. The person helping us was very nice and answered the questions my family had about flavors. She was also quick with getting the first family done and then getting through us. The inside of the place was clean and super cute. I loved the branded shirts they had for sale, really fun and unique! If I'm ever in town again, I will definitely be coming here.

Yelp
Cute little ice cream shop in a fun, hipster area. The ice cream is delicious and the staff is friendly and very helpful. They'll take all the time you need and give you samples if you aren't sure what you want to order. They have boozy ice cream, but don't think you're going to get drunk on it. It's always a good time. I get something different every time I stop in.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! The reviews were spot on. So many different flavors, there was something for everyone. The shop was beautiful and nostalgic. Very spacious, tons of seating. It was a quaint neighborhood and easy to get to. Service was efficient and was very pleased. Would certainly visit again!
google avatar

Yelp
Food: 4 Decor: 4 Service: 4 Been here twice. Parking can sometimes be difficult since it can get quite busy. Would definitely return. Midnight pleasures and Clementine ice cream with black vanilla cone 4/5. Midnight pleasures was a rich chocolate, and the Clementine was nice, tart, and acidic to balance it out. Black vanilla cone as a nice touch. Service was good. Line can take a while since there's usually only one staff member.
google avatar

Halley S.

Yelp
Space is always super clean every time I walk in. The staff has always been friendly and offers samples if you'd like to try a flavor before buying. The flavors are some of the most unique I've ever seen. The boozy flavors have quite a bit of alcohol in them, so beware!
google avatar

Benoy S.

Yelp
No dogs, or service dogs allowed. I had my fiancée go in to get me ice cream. Poor quality taste. No opinion on the ambiance because I wasn't allowed inside. Poor food experience added with not being allowed inside make this an easy thumbs down. I do not recommend nor will return. Disclaimer: My average review score 3.40 when I made this review--(take with a grain of salt) (I rely on Yelp to go to places with good reviews, may account for the higher average)

Yelp
Would you like some really good ice cream? Then please visit Clementine's! Oh my goodness, we stopped in to check out this new ice cream shop and to get some ice cream. The shop is so cute! I've heard of Clementine's in St. Louis and always wanted to visit, but now I have a Clementine's close to me! The strawberry is so creamy, with a lovely taste of fresh strawberries. My sister-in-law said the salted caramel is fantastic! There is a nice little patio outside to sit and enjoy your ice cream when the weather permits. I love the big Honey Bear on the building. Everyone working the counter could not have been nicer. Can't wait to go back and try another flavor. They also have ice cream to go in containers you can grab from a case. I highly suggest you do! Welcome Clementine's!
google avatar

Yelp
Waiting for Clementine's to spread throughout the Midwest. A MUST-GO when in St. Louis-- especially grateful for their creamy, VEGAN options! Pictured: Vegan Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookie, Vegan Blueberry Crumble

Leslie H.

Yelp
Clementine's is always a great choice! We've been to a couple of locations. We stopped in to this spot after a Cardinals game. It's a bit tucked away and was a great spot to sit outside and enjoy the neighborhood with some delicious ice cream. (I had the butter brickle this time!)

Yelp
Boozy ice cream? Please, and thank you. Cute little ice cream shop in Lafayette Square with "naughty" (boozy) and "nice" (regular) ice cream flavors! I literally wanted to try all the flavors but resisted the temptation to be that person and ordered what the friendly guy behind the counter recommended. I did not regret my choice of Hot Butter Rum! Brown sugar and dark rum really comes through. The ice cream itself is very creamy and rich. I'll definitely be back to try the other naughty and nice flavors!
google avatar

Martinique B.

Yelp
Cute spot. They have yummy choices and a variety of cone options. The staff was kind and didn't get upset with all the samples I requested. I have to keep going back cuz they are so many delicious flavors to chose from! I got honey lavender and gooey butter cake

Elizabeth R.

Yelp
The best ice cream we had the 5 scoops to share and the Italian cookie, gooey butter cake, Carmel crack are outstanding!
google avatar

Tiffany S.

Yelp
I love Clementine's! And since I have discovered the one in Lafayette Square that is definitely not as crazy busy as the other locations, it is my go to spot to visit! I can't wait until the Edwardsville location opens in spring 2023 so I don't even have to cross the river to enjoy my favorites. One of my favorites is the pink champagne sorbet. Also, from the boozy side, I love the maple bourbon pecan ice cream. They also have a great variety of rotating flavors. Around thanksgiving they had a roasted pineapple cherry sorbet that was amazing. If you have not experienced Clementines, a St. Louis born and bred ice cream concept, you are missing out. Check them out at one of their various locations around St. Louis (And soon, Illinois!) They also ship nationwide, especially since they made The O List, Oprah's favorite things, in 2019.
google avatar

Gracie L.

Yelp
When friends ask me for St. Louis ice cream recommendations, Clementine's is always on the list! The quality of their ice cream is outstanding. You can definitely tell that their handcrafted ice cream is made with top-notch ingredients. I also love that they offer lots of vegan options as well! In my opinion, there aren't any "bad" flavors at Clementine's. However, Honey Lavender and Gooey Butter Cake are definitely must-try's! Employees are always very friendly and helpful. The Clayton location can get pretty packed at times, but they definitely keep the line moving efficiently.
google avatar

Bill B.

Yelp
We come to Clementine's all the time! They're open all day and pretty late, located at the end of a cul-de-sac. The folks working there always seem ready to help explain flavors and help out! They always have a ton of new and experimental flavors! I ordered the Tahini/Cherry flavor, which had another name but I'm forgetting at the moment. It had this sour but sweet bite to it! We also ordered a sundae. I'm confused because they seem to have been out of whipped cream for months now it seems. Not sure what that situation is all about to be honest. Seems pretty bizarre but maybe there's some supply chain issues. Either way it was delicious and we totally recommend it!

Kelly A.

Yelp
I got the gooey butter cake ice cream and it was amazing! The employees were very nice!
google avatar

Vaun C.

Yelp
ALWAYS a go-to! The plethora a vegan flavors are phenomenal. It makes you forget there's no dairy!
google avatar

Sara G.

Yelp
Every single flavor is bomb! My favorite is probably the gooey butter. #iykyk We love Clementines. These our Molina's favorite pupcups! They are dressed up like nostalgic diners...shabby chic almost. Just a great vibe and smellin' amazing!

Courtney R.

Yelp
Clementine's is the perfect specialty ice-cream experience. Gooey butter cake was the crowd favorite and the boozy manhattan was delicious and not overpowering.
google avatar

Yelp
This was absolutely a random find when we are visiting St.Louis. We were craving for some ice cream and yelped this place. And we are not disappointed at all. This must be a local owned and they have good flavors. They do have vegan and spiked flavor options too. I loved the samples they gave and we took up to 5flavours to try on. I felt the prices are very very reasolnable. I loved the buttery gooey flavor the most and I miss it now that I am not in St.Louis there waffles cones are not freshly made but they tasted good. Could have been much better if they are freshly made. Ambiance is reallly good. They have a nice outdoor seating where you can enjoy the ice cream and service is amazing. Overall it's a must try place.

Yelp
Clementine's Naughty & Nice Creamery is a cute fun little ice cream shop with ice cream for everyone. They have boozy ice cream, non boozy, vegan and dairy free options. They have cute merch for sale! There are not many places to park. They do have a nice little outdoor patio area to enjoy your ice cream. I got the "naughty" or boozy ice cream - the maple bourbon with pecans in a birthday cake cone. It was really good. My boyfriend got the "nice" baked apple betty and he really enjoyed it. They also have pup cups available for doggies :)
google avatar

Rebecca H.

Yelp
I mean, I legit have diabetes now but it was worth it. I was in the mood for dessert that faithful night we were visiting St. Louis and fortunately for me, Clementine's exists and is available for delivery via Uber Eats. Don't get me wrong, I was aggressively intrigued by their "naughty" flavors but I couldn't in good conscience order an entire pint of ice cream for one meal. The only "sundae" which in this case is a euphemism for "the only thing on their menu that is remotely socially acceptable to consume in one serving" was their "signature sundae" which contains a scoop of their gooey butter ice cream, a scoop of salted cracker caramel ice cream, hot fudge, and salted candied pecans. In the event that you are not familiar with these flavors, I will enlighten you. Gooey butter ice cream is chunks of gooey butter cake in CREAM CHEESE ICE CREAM. Salted cracker caramel is literally chocolate, caramel, three types of crackers, flake salt all with salted caramel ice cream. They are out of their mother fucking mind in St. Louis and I mean that in the best possible way. I mean, it was incredibly sweet but incredibly delicious. I couldn't eat the entire thing because after a while, the sugar load just became to be too much but I enjoyed every second of it up until that point. I like what they're doing here and I may look into their nationwide delivery options lmao.

Yelp
A bit pricey but worth the splurge if you like ice cream. Unique and delicious flavors.....it's always hard to choose. And dagnabbit, they are within walking distance from our home now.

Yelp
Late nights or anytime...I'd say it's a Great place. Treat yourself like we did and Take the time to find it!

Yelp
This is some of the best ice cream I've had in my life. Specifically, the Gooey Butter Cake flavor. Amazing. This place is a must for those passing through St Louis. I'll be back next time I'm in town!

Yelp
This is a cute and quaint little ice cream shop with very unique flavors (including amazing seasonal flavors) . This is probably my go to place , absolutely delish (try one of the specialty cones you won't be disappointed . They have supper friendly staff / customer service and they will help you to find a unique flavor you love . This place is 10/10 for me . Give it a try !

Yelp
!!!!!!!!! I'm in love! I had the Salted Caramel and Cookies and Cream. I did not think this would be a go to for me but l love cookies and cream and decided to go for it. It was the best mixture of savory and sweet that l had with any deserts. I'm sure you can't go wrong with any flavor. Clementines from their promotions , social media , to the delivery of their product is intentional. This will be a weekly visit for me during the summer months Looking forward to trying their Lime King flavor in connection to the Lion King playing at the Fox Theater this summer.

Mark M.

Yelp
Awesome ice cream in a quaint spot of STL. We were searching for great ice cream to compliment our meal at Salt & Smoke down by the stadium and Clementine's was such a great treat and surprise. Staff was great, service was impeccable and allowed us to sample until we hit our perfect choice. Strawberry/Balsamic/White Pepper was incredible!
google avatar

Grace L.

Yelp
Delicious ice cream with interesting flavors! Interior as well as exterior is adorable & it's a bit pricey but worth trying! Ample street parking & you get to sample 3 flavors. The meyer lemon with blueberries and midnight pleasure were my fave. They also offer pints and merch!
google avatar

Jonathan M.

Yelp
Excellent place for ice cream. High quality and in a very walkable neighborhood if you want to take it to go on a stroll. Highly recommended. Toddler approved!
google avatar

Yelp
This ice cream shop is a gem! Lots of alcoholic and non-alcoholic options, but we were feeling more nice than naughty and went for the Gooey Butter Cake and Persimmon Cardamom. -Gooey Butter Cake 4.5/5 - soo good with the tiny (actually gooey) chunks of cake mixed in, almost made up for not getting a chance to try the real thing while I was in STL -Persimmon Cardamom 5/5 - my fave!! as one of their seasonal flavors, this harbinger of fall made from real persimmons & persimmon butter (didn't know this was a thing but now wanna get my hands on a jar) struck an ideal balance between the notes of fruit and spice, with neither overpowering the other and joining together in a delicate blend of creamy herbal deliciousness~ Usually tasting such drastically different flavors simultaneously can result in a loss of individual integrity, but these flavors were each so bold that they held their own as we went back and forth between the two. Pretty pricey at $5/scoop but so tasty that it's still definitely worth trying!
google avatar

Eli T.

Yelp
I heard about this place year ago but never got a chance to try their signature boozy ice cream until now. I was not disappointed! I got the maple bourbon salted Carmel ice cream. It came with candied pecans and just the right amount of booze. My friend ordered the Manhattan which we both loved. The Manhattan was a little stronger than mine but still very yummy. I highly recommend this place! Perfect combination of cocktail and ice cream all in one!
google avatar

Brett J.

Yelp
Fantastic neighborhood ice cream shop! Great selection of flavors and even some with some booze in them. Come before the rush tho cause it's pretty popular on these hot summer nights.
google avatar

Will W.

Yelp
Hands down best ice cream in St. Louis. Every flavor we sampled was delicious. It's expensive... but truly you get what you pay for... $6 for ice cream and still worth it every time.
google avatar

Carol Y.

Yelp
We had just eaten Mexican across street which fortunately my husband and I had split and I noticed this cute shop across street we investigated and it was ice cream! We each had one scoop. One scoop of the gooey butter cake and one scoop of the Italian butter cookie Both were absolutely delicious!!! So glad we happened on this. Staff was very friendly and the shop was very clean and decorated that you wanted to step inside especially when I found out it was ice cream! The deliver anywhere in the United States. We love our hometown Whiteys ice cream but maybe have a new love!
google avatar

K C.

Yelp
My wife and I love their ice cream and we had put a deposit down for the to serve ice cream at an upcoming event. Plans changed and while I initially had trouble reaching them, they took great care of me and my family! They worked with us and came up with a solution that showed they care about their customers. We love their ice cream and look forward to having more
google avatar

Lauren B.

Yelp
Had been dying to try this place out after hearing nothing but good reviews and finally got to on a girls night out! The space is beautiful and cozy. They have a naughty menu with boozy ice cream and a nice one with regular ice cream. I had the budino ice cream in a waffle cup and OMG, it was incredible! It tasted so fresh and creamy. I can't wait to come back to try more flavors.
google avatar

Cindy W.

Yelp
The ice cream here is so good and creamy. I heard so much about it and it did not disappoint. I always have to do a sundae (Signature Sundae), the salted crack caramel and the gooey buttercake ice creams topped with candied pecans, whipped cream, and hot fudge, with an awesome amarena cherry on top. MMMMmmmmMmmmm. Great combo, i usually prefer my sundaes on a plain vanilla base but the caramel and the buttercake really complement each other and the toppings. Delicious! They have some outdoor seating (none indoor), perfect for a warm sunny day, and a toilet inside that was very clean.
google avatar

Christina V.

Yelp
Came here on a Saturday afternoon and it wasn't busy at all. They allow you to try samples which is really nice since some of their flavors aren't what you'd typically find anywhere else. Everyone working there was super friendly and the inside of the shop is very cute. Plenty of street parking available and outdoor seating.
google avatar

Jennifer N.

Yelp
I heard many good things about clementine so I had to try it. I wished I had the stomach to try all the flavors because there were so many flavors to choose from. I ended up getting the cookie and cream flavor with their homemade whip cream and it was yummy. I definitely want to go back for more to try all their other flavors.
google avatar

Asad R.

Yelp
This place was amazing! We got 3 flavors - gooey butter cake, Italian butter cookie, and salted caramel cookies and cream. All 3 were amazing but the butter cookie (basically speculoos) was amazing!! So many peices of cookie played throughout that it made for the perfect texture! The pricing is high if you get a single scoop but becomes a lot more reasonable if you get 2 or 3. I would definitely come here again the next time I'm in the area! Hopefully they expand to Chicago!
google avatar

Midori G.

Yelp
I was so impressed by all the ice cream options at Clementines! They had several boozy and non-boozy options to choose from. What we ordered: my bf and I got one maple bourbon and one bananas and rum (those might have not been the actual names, but they were the flavors). They were both boozy, but the alcohol in the ice cream was very smooth and not overpowering at all. We had such a fun time ordering ice cream and walking around the neighborhood! The prices are typical for the quality and flavor selection. Great job, Clementines!
