Portland’s Indoor Dining Return Leaves Restaurant Workers Uneasy - Eater Portland

"Cliff’s, a neighborhood tavern on NE Russell Street, will open for some limited indoor seating as well, says co-owner Sierra Kirk. She and her husband currently operate the bar as a skeleton crew with just two other occasional workers." - Alex Frane

Google
I was delightfully surprised by the outstanding taste of this burger. The jalapeño burger was a great recommendation from the good man on the register. Onion rings were cooked to perfection and the PEACH TEA OMG! Definitely going back to try the bacon jalapeno burger next go around.

Google
Absolutely love Cliffs.... Mike is a stand up guy who makes sure every customer leaves fat and happy!!! Get the chocolate peanut butter shake unless your scared...

Google
Nice sized burger with good flavor. Be sure you understand this is not fast food. I wouldn’t say my wait was long, but don’t expect that your order will be out immediately. Good food takes a little time to prepare. Chili burgers and curly fries. The burger itself is a big and the patty was flavorful. The curly fries were hot and fresh. Staff was very friendly.

Excellent burgers, fries are fresh (with different options), and the shakes are awesome. Atmosphere is great, restaurant is clean. We love Cliff's !!!

Cliff's Hamburger Grill – A Hidden Gem in Houston! Cliff's Hamburger Grill is hands down one of the best local spots I’ve had the pleasure of visiting. From the moment you walk in, the nostalgic vibe and warm hospitality make you feel right at home. The staff is friendly, fast, and genuinely passionate about what they do. The burgers are fresh, juicy, and full of flavor. The fries are crispy and perfectly seasoned. If you're in Houston and craving a legit, no-frills burger done right, Cliff's is the place to be. Support local, and you won’t be disappointed!

Google
The burger was amazing. The service was horrible and the timing of the food was wrong. The guy with the glasses had the nerve to give me a hamburger first and make me wait. Almost 20 minutes later for fries. It was a single patty hamburger so I’m supposed to just let that wait for a whole 20 minutes For some fries. The food is good but the service is horrible and it’s totally $23 for a Burger and fries wayyyy overpriced. I would not come here again. Here’s a picture of my fries that came after my burger was done and he had the nerve to say sorry

Google
A few of our staff decided to patronize Cliffs hamburger grill yesterday. We were pleasantly surprised. The menu choices were plentiful and included a children’s menu. My pic is not readable but I wanted to show the many options. The portions were very large. We shared fries as there were plenty to go around the table. Burgers were cooked medium well👍🏻. They were large and well appointed with toppings. We did not leave here disappointed.

Google
This place is the perfect place in Houston for a burger! I had the chili cheddar burger and not only was it delicious but the size of the burger was perfect! The grilled onions and cheese were cooked to perfection. My partner got the veggie burger and enjoyed that as well! Even if you're wanting a meatless option it's the perfect place to go. The ambiance is great too, giving a home like experience! The fries and mozzarella sticks were also great tasting! I'm going to go again!

Yelp
I stopped by during the early mornings around 2AM. There's a bar right next-door, which makes it convenient for this establishment to be open so late. Upon entering, I was greeted so kindly by the staff. This place was very clean with enough seating. I ordered the Mushroom & Swiss burger. That was one of the best burgers I had in a very long time. . It was huge and worth the price. I took a star away because the prep work was a bit unsanitary for me. The cooked used the same gloves that was used to pick up the raw meat and prepped my burger toppings which included lettuce . Despite the minor mishaps with the unchanging of the gloves, I still think about that burger often.

Yelp
I came here for lunch recently, and liked the different variety of burgers that were offered. The mgr/owner told me that they had been around for a few decades. The interior was on smaller side but good memorabilia. There's outdoor seating also. I ordered a mushroom swiss burger. It was a nice size patty with mushroom and other fixings. The burger was juicy, tasty. I noticed that they had coke zero on the fountain machine, so I went ahead and added an order of fries and coke zero. Their French fries were pretty delicious too. Golden brown and a nice crisp to them. The jalapeño burger was very good also. The jalapeños were strong. I felt tingle along my lips. I plan on visiting them again very soon. Had a good Time.

Yelp
The food was great, but the service was TERRIBLE When we entered to the restaurant with my girl the server don't say nothing just with his attitude like "I don't want to take your order, leave this place" my girl told me please leave this restaurant but I saw 2 gentleman in the cooking area with VERY KIND and happy face and I said its okay, we gonna order some hamburgers. The food was very good we really enjoyed

Yelp
It's just ok... expensive the quality you get. Looks like the Burger is frozen from what you get at Costco .Southwells is across the street just saying

Yelp
Such a a great burger spot. Cliff's is the definition of a traditional burger and you just can't beat it. The handcut fries are amazing as well. It's rare to find homemade fries like these! Not to mention everyone that works here is always so kind and helpful to get anything you need. I highly recommend you try this warm and welcoming neighborhood spot!

Yelp
A little pricey but good food and large portions. Friendly staff. Had the fried chicken salad. Huge pieces of chicken.

Yelp
I returned here for the first time in about 4 years recently. Cliff's is a popular neighborhood burger joint that has a small outside patio in front along with an attractively decorated Houston themed indoor dining room. There is a very large menu board that offers handhelds, loaded potatoes, some platter meals, side dishes and milkshakes. They don't serve breakfast anymore. I tried the famous fish sandwich ($12.95) and made it a combo meal ($5.95) for a total of $20 and change with tax. I wasn't impressed at all. The fish sandwich was uninspiring in both size and appearance and tasted as being cooked in old oil. Ditto on the fries. Guys, change out your grease! This meal was a 2 at best. I was going to write my review on just that visit but decided to give them one more chance returning about a month later. This time, I went with the hamburger ($11.25) and made it a combo for another $5.95. With tax the cost was just under $20. This meal was much better. The 8 oz. beef patty on the large dressed bun tasted good and satisfying. The fresh cut fries were golden brown and had a lot of potato flavor. It was a good tasting meal (4). There are two reasons I am giving a 3 overall score. The first meal was bad tasting using the old oil. The second reason is the unposted practice of adding 3.5% to all credit card payments. Posted prices on the menu board are already high but then adding 3.5% and not telling you about it is a sin in my opinion. I hate it when restaurants do this. So don't do it. Just charge one price for cash and credit. Even had you told me about the surcharge both times I still wouldn't like it. For that reason, I probably won't return.

Yelp
In my continuing quest to find Houston's best burger, I landed here at Cliff's off of Fountainview near San Felipe. I remember a Cliff's back in the 80s off highway 6 near West Oaks mall. My family had a few good meals there back then. Good to see them still operating today, albeit on the other side of town (a much better side of town). Cliff's was listed somewhere as one of the best burgers in Houston. To my delight, it was very good. I've had much better though. A buddy of mine who I used to drink with at the bar next door (Ron's) told me that their best dish is the chili, not the burger. So, I'm waiting for a really cold day to go back and try their chili. At that point, I will change my review. It could be a 5 star...

Zeina E.

Yelp
The food here is delicious! I've tried several items and they've all been a hit! You can't go wrong with anything you order but I'd definitely recommend the cheeseburger and chicken tenders.

Lina K.

Yelp
Hands down the best burger I've ever had--juicy, flavorful, and cooked to perfection every time!
google avatar

Brady R.

Yelp
Cliffs is a go to spot for a great burger that's not frozen juicy and full of flavor. They have great fresh fixings and the onion rings in my opinion are the best I've found in town other than Goode company taqueria.

J H.

Yelp
Burger patties seemed dense and frozen. Chili's cheese fries were great. Frito pie needed more chili. Staff friendly and restaurant was nice inside.
google avatar

Destiney A.

Yelp
You want a delicious, huge, juicy homemade burger? RUN TO CLIFF's NOW! 10/10 experience. Staff is so kind and helpful (shoutout to Jose!) If you're in the area, stop by. It's worth it
google avatar

Ardara H.

Yelp
Ahh the burger is phenomenal. The meat is thick and hearty. This a fresh filling selection. A really full-sized burger. The onion are superb. They are fried in this outstanding tasting original batter. If you don't want to be full then don't come here. You would have to be superhuman to finish this meal, so be prepared for leftover to go. The service is super friendly and thorough. They assure to get the order correct. Super nice guys. The ambiance reminds of New York mafia lunch time. But with burgers. The sounds are of ESPN (catered to the crowd) well lite and comfortable feel. The photos on the wall are throwbacks which add to the grand feel. This is a must stop!!! You will honestly not regret.

Darrell S.

Yelp
Super friendly service and really good burger and fries. Perfect hand cut fries like you can't find anymore. I will be back
google avatar

Lauri B.

Yelp
I really love Cliff's hamburgers. They are always served fresh, piping hot and delicious! The topping are always perfect too. Service is great and the restaurant is clean. I'm not a fan of their fresh cut fries. I need to get a different item next time. There's a slight upcharge, but it would be worth it. They have a full menu, inlcuding fried okra, loaded baked potatoes, BBQ sandwiches, chicken fingers, salads and more! They don't mess around. Will be back to try more items.
google avatar

Andrew K.

Yelp
Great hamburger! One of the best hamburgers I have ever had. Well seasoned and full of flavor, fresh ingredients, great bun too. It was a big burger. I felt good after eating it too. It was really great. The service was exceptional too. The interior of the restaurant is very nice as well, very new. Loved this hamburger place. Will definitely be going again.

Yelp
Cliffffffs! My favorite burger place! Literally everything here is so good. Their baked potato's will fill you up for days and I love that they're so personable. Their fries are way better when you dine in but I think that's true of any place if you like crispy fries because of the way they travel to you. Also! You must. Try. Their peanut butter shake! It's the best shake I've ever had

Michael K.

Yelp
Everything made in house: -Possibly the best chicken fingers you can ever have....batter made in house, perfect seasoning, perfect balance of crunchy vs soft -gravy made in house -fries made in house Cliff the owner cooks and is putting out fantastic fresh, quality fast food. Highly, highly recommend this place.

Yelp
I never forget a burger. And I just know I've been here back in the early 1990's when I lived on Fountainview. I got the Murphy combo and the grease was just glistening off the fries. I could hear my arteries screaming. At the bottom of the basket I couldn't bring myself to eat the last few bites as the bottom of the basket was glistening. I like crunchy fries more. These were fresh but kinda like 5 guys style. The burger was good. I should've taken more pictures but I ate it too quickly which is a good sign I suppose. But guys you gotta update your prices. Murphy rang up $13.20 and combo $6.16 pretax whereas the menu prices were $12.75 and $5.95 for these ... not cool
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
Great burger. A little weird service. We are inside and it appeared a little disorganized but have to tell you - burger was great.
google avatar

Michelle F.

Yelp
The food was pretty good. Fries were a bit soggy and the burger didn't taste like it was homemade but probably already bought and formed beforehand. However the customer service was great!
google avatar

Harry B.

Yelp
After 37 years still one of my favorite burgers and their BLT is awesome, always a great meal
google avatar

Andrew S.

Yelp
Great burger but $19 for Fries and Drink with burger :/... A little on the high end price wise but the food is very good. I'd frequent more often if wasn't so expensive.
google avatar

Tim A.

Yelp
Great burger and onion rings. My pet peeve is seeing people in the kitchen preparing your food with no gloves on. Even the kneading of the burger into patties. I'm not gonna freak about it, but when the person doesn't look that clean to start with, seeing them make your food without gloves is all the less appealing.
google avatar

Julian M.

Yelp
I'm going to have to say that I wasn't really feeling this place after such rave reviews. I was looking for a good burger and fries, chicken sandwich and fries spot. Cliffs is right up the street from me and when I pulled up there was a bit of a line. I'm thinking that I was going to be impressed but it was not so. Firstly the portion sizes were smaller than I would've liked especially when it came to the onion rings (one of my favorite foods). I may have gotten like 4 and it was like $7-$8. I can't even remember what the price was I was so made when I got home. Secondly I felt like all of my food from the sandwich to the onion rings lacked flavor. I thought that the experience as a whole was OK.

Yelp
If Cliffs is a bandwagon, you're more likely to find me jumping off Cliffs than jumping on the Cliffs bandwagon. But it's still well worth a try, for sure. I have nothing against this burger shop, and I thought they were pretty nice, pretty tasty, pretty good value. The girl working here was super sweet, attractive, flirtatious as well, but the chicken sandwich was one of the less impressive ones I've had from non-chains, and the burger was nothing to write home about (which is a shame as I was so excited), and I would definitely have to come back here and try some other items in order to give it that 5th star. There are a lot of people that swear by this place, so hopefully I'll figure out why. I was a little bit put off by the republicanism that exudes from some of the elements of Cliffs (as with other Texas spots obviously), they may not have realized what a purple state we live in (50 50 right down the middle), but having said that, if a place is really good then I don't care about the politics at all such as Angie's or Lankford Grocery. It'd score 2 if it was a chain, but since every family owned place is rated on a 3-to-5 scale or thereabouts, it's a right-in-the-middle 4 for me.

Veronica J.

Yelp
They were quick and nice. It was my first time here and I ordered online. My big complaint is their online descriptions are not descriptive enough. I ordered the spicy chicken sandwich. Every chicken sandwich I've ever had in my life spices the batter to make it spicy, but this place drenches the chicken in hot sauce. I added cheese and bacon which was completely canceled out by the hot sauce on the chicken. If I had known "spicy" meant they just add tons of hot sauce and not a spicy chicken batter, I would have gotten regular chicken. Otherwise fries are good and fresh ( need salt) and the food is fresh and tasty. Just not what I wanted. I'd go again, but we just urge them to be more descriptive online

Yelp
Came back because of Joseph's comments . Thank you. Yall treated me like a great customer and I appreciate it. Will def come back here great burger spot! The frito pie is great , the burger uses a great bun and good quality beef in the burger , they also have different types of burgers such as buffalo and Kobe , turkey , veggie, etc. I appreciate Joseph and the workers there doing a great job on customer service . Highly recommend this place . Would be nice if the cook wore gloves the only thing I would say. But when I called he confirmed and told me he was wearing gloves but they were transparent lol so maybe I missed that. Overall great tho

Yelp
One of my favorite foods is a burger so I've had a lot of different kinds. This burger is just not that great. Ground beef was a little on the harder/chewier side and lacked flavor. Not visiting this place again but good I know now. Sweet potato fries also tasted questionable.

Emmeline M.

Yelp
Amazing hospitality and great food well definitely be going back. Don't have a picture of my food because it was that good.
google avatar

Tiffany E.

Yelp
All burgers are served half pound. Solid old fashioned cheeseburger and bacon cheeseburger. The fries that came with the combo were plentiful. Service was friendly and the establishment was very clean. The only thing I was missing was some Tabasco or hot sauce for tang/spice. They had some big tubs of ketchup but no other condiments on the counter. Next time I'll consider adding jalapeños to my burger.

Ryan F.

Yelp
Open late on the weekends now for take out. Thick burger patties. I think 1/2 pound. French fries are good. For the price 5 stars. Will be back.

Randy R.

Yelp
The service was excellent, and the location was very clean. I had the steak finger basket with fries. The steak fingers were not that good as they were processed and not made on site. I will try something else next time.
google avatar

Michelle J V.

Yelp
The Bacon Cheeseburger was great it had that classic burger taste that hits the spot every time! The turkey & Swiss melt was magnificent... next time I'll add jalapeños! Old fashioned hand cut fries were delicious, a bit greasy, but nothing a quick dab with a paper napkin won't take care of. Will be back!!
google avatar

Marbet R.

Yelp
I had the Salmon Burger with fries- they were absolutely delicious, the fries! The Salmon Burger was amazing too. Great place to have a good burger and fries!
google avatar

Caroline R.

Yelp
I was craving a philly steak po-boy and had heard of this place, so I decided to order one from here. I ordered mine as a combo, so it came with fries and a drink. For my drink, I had unsweet tea; luckily, the tea tasted fresh and clean. I hate when I go to places and their tea tastes old (but that's not a problem here!) As for the food itself, it was really good! It came with plenty of fries, and the philly steak po-boy was so soft and cheesy and delicious! I look forward to returning and trying more menu items.
google avatar

Christina G.

Yelp
Now this is a burger! I got the Bison burger and was not disappointed. The patty was thick and juicy and it was fixed just the way I like it. Two napkin burger is always a good burger in my book. Also, I can't tell you how happy I was to see they had curly fries on the menu...Happy dance over here.
google avatar

Baraa N.

Yelp
One of the best if not the best! What can i say Friendly staff and great customer service from the get go. Great atmosphere with some old fashioned designs. Huge selection of choices I ordered the Kobe burger and Onion rings i can sit here and describe the taste for you all day but it wont compare to how good it actually is! I'll definitely be coming again on a regular basis if you're doubting trying this place. Take this review as a personal invitation to Go ahead and try it!
google avatar

Tarsha P.

Yelp
Stopped by yesterday to grab a cheeseburger and fries to go. I've been here multiple times and burgers have always been fresh and good quality, even when ordered through a delivery app. I paid 23 bucks for both, which I don't mind for a good burger...But something was definitely off yesterday, the quality and texture of the meat patty was horrible and inedible, I gave it to my dog! The patty definitely looked and tasted like a frozen Sysco type patty, no seasoning whatsoever, and despite the fact that I requested it well done it was undercooked. I understand rising food costs, but don't cheat your consumer and give subpar ingredients for the same high quality ingredient price. I think I would have been more satisfied with a whataburger yesterday! I guess I should have looked at recent reviews, as I see I'm not the only one that has been dissatisfied recently!
google avatar

Liza M.

Yelp
I've been trying to find that perfect burger and by golly it's here! I'd slap my momma for this burger!! And great service!!!
google avatar

Malek B.

Yelp
Steady quality, burger patty sizes, dependable onion rings & waffle fries. Not a fan of the regular fries. Can't go wrong with this place! Multiple generations of customers young and old loyally return time and again - though some could choose single burgers instead of the double bacon cheeseburgers to increase their odds of making it to the new year (RIP Johnathan K.).
google avatar

Ashley M.

Yelp
Underwhelming and overpriced. The best item was the okra. The burger is something you could get at any fast food restaurant (frozen patty). The onion rings had batter that was falling off. The French fries were soggy. I had high hopes and was let down.
google avatar

Arie W.

Yelp
Cliff's has become one of my favorite burger joints. I can't stuff the food in my mouth fast enough! It's THAT good. It got to the point where I had lunch there every day for about 3 weeks. I even sat in the parking lot waiting for them to open! Sunday's were hard since they're closed that day :( An intervention was the only thing that saved me. The manager is very friendly and personable. He knows me by name now! I typically call in and order or place an order through the EatStreets app so i can earn coupons. The food is cooked fresh and tastes amazing, although I am not a huge fan of the handcut fries...but if handcut fries are your thing, then you'd probably enjoy them. I highly recommend you giving this little family owned restaurant a shot. You won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Vincent M.

Yelp
now this was a good damn burger, its been around forever but never knew, i have to say everything was fresh and cooked to order, i would go back in a heartbeat and thankfully now its in the area i will be a regular
google avatar

Ray S.

Yelp
When I pulled up I was surprised to not to see Cliff's in a stand alone building. I must say, I never thought that I would find a Good Burger joint in a store front. Oh boy but I did. The atmosphere was perfect for family and friends to hang out and eat s good burger. From the the pictures on the walls to the ole school round tables to the high counter stools- it was pacs that could eat, converse with a good friend and relax. The service was great after I ordered my burger (Bacon Burger with fries and o rings) and while I was outside on the patio talking, my ordered was ready and delivered. But when they seen me talking they took the order back to the kitchen to keep it hot for me. The bun was large, which concerned me. Because I did not want all bun and no burger. But when I bit into my burger it was juicy and rather larger in my hands than I thought by pictures. It was so good and juicy that I was offered a lot of napkins. The fries were so good, just like my grandmother use to make. And the Onion Rings were humongous, good and fresh. I couldn't finish them all. -My Bad. I will definitely be back.

Carol C.

Yelp
Fries- plentiful and good looking but soggy. Had to place them in the air fryer before consuming. Burger- huge but taste like a frozen patty, non-seasoned and undercooked. Last but not least: Chili- inedible, would not feed it to animal or my enemy. Straight to the trash bin :(! Yes, great customer service but I'm NOT going for customer service, I'm going to feed my tummy. Very disappointed because all the reviews were so good (smh) !!!!!!!

Rob D.

Yelp
I used to come to cliffs regularly when I was in high school. I don't know if I was younger and it's always been this bad, but I just paid $20 for a very mediocre burger and soggy gross fries. $20! Save yourself the disappointment and go across the street to south wells.
google avatar

Yelp
These old fashion hamburgers are really good! the service was great, we were nicely seated and the food was super fresh! Definitely coming back for lunch!
