"This restaurant was first awarded a Michelin star in 1959, which makes it the longest-held star (with a break of only two years) in Italy. Housed in a 15C palazzo next to the Aquila d'Oro hotel, the dining room boasts an atmospheric and nostalgic feel. The cuisine has the same traditional focus and celebrates Emilian traditions in all their glory, especially on the trolleys used to display selections of antipasti (sliced ham always features, as does spinach and cheese pie), and desserts (including a delicious zabaione served with pear in red wine and a creamy Sambuca semifreddo. But the undisputed stars of the show are the meat dishes, especially the two trolleys of specialities that are the highlight of any visit to Arnaldo. These include roast and boiled meats, including dishes not often found in a restaurant of this quality, such as calf’s head, tongue and pig’s trotters, all cooked traditionally and served with the usual sauces and gravies. Every morning, the “sfogline” pasta-makers prepare excellent fresh pastas, which are served either in a broth or simply with sage and butter. Arnaldo is not a place for fans of modern cuisine but if you’re keen to try authentic Emilian dishes full of flavour, you’ll be in your element here!" - Michelin Inspector

The least expensive Michelin-starred restaurants in Italy

"With Emilian cooking as authentic as it gets, this historic address—Italy’s first to be awarded a Michelin star back in 1959—celebrates culinary heritage via trolleys teeming with starters, desserts, and especially meats. The 75€ “Arnaldo” tasting menu centers on a boiled-and-roast meat trolley featuring superb slow-cooked cuts of beef and pork, served with mashed potatoes and traditional mostarde and sauces." - Le Guide MICHELIN

From the moment you step into Clinica Gastronomica Arnaldo you realize this isn’t any regular restaurant, it’s a totally atypical experience, even for a Michelin-starred place. Housed in a centuries-old palazzo, the interior feels like being invited into someone’s old-fashioned family home: vintage furniture, warm lighting, and a sense of history all around. The food service itself is part of the charm: dishes arrive on large trolleys, from antipasti to homemade pasta and hearty roast or boiled meats, just like at grandma’s place, but elevated. For me, it triggered childhood memories and gave a sense of warmth and comfort that’s rare in fine dining. The flavors were no less impressive: rich homemade pasta, slow-cooked meats, thoughtful sauces and mostarda, all full-bodied and satisfying. The roast meats with mostarda, in particular - are absolutely worth trying. It’s honest, soulful cooking that doesn’t try to be flashy, but leaves a strong impression. What struck me most is how Arnaldo stays true to tradition. Founded in 1936, it has retained a star from the Michelin Guide since 1959, making it the longest-held starred restaurant in Italy. The continuity and dedication to classic Emilian cuisine make you feel part of something timeless. In short, if you expect small portions on artistic plates, think again. At Arnaldo you get a unique blend of nostalgia, hearty home-style food and genuine hospitality, a Michelin-starred restaurant that feels less like a pompous luxury destination and more like a nostalgic family feast. Highly recommended if you want taste, tradition, and soul in every bite.

An absolutely stunning restaurant and definitely the best I’ve experienced in Emilia on this trip. Everything reflects a deep respect for tradition and for the ingredients themselves. I truly enjoyed the staff who wheeled out the carts and introduced the wine list, they were all excellent. However, the woman at the cashier, wearing American Vans sneakers, was strikingly out of place. At checkout she didn’t even bother to say thanks, which stood in sharp contrast to the rest of the team. This wasn’t a matter of professionalism, but rather pure ignorance and disrespect.

We came to Clinca Arnaldo for the experience and food. First off, the restaurant was so hot we were sweating. True it was hot outside but some AC could have helped. We drank lots of water. The trolly cart was surely a show. But who wants meat in water? I ordered the Filet in Cognac Sauce, Med-Rare. It was really rare and so hard to cut. Very tough piece of meat. The mashed potatoes with the sauce was good though. Michelin star? I don't think so. Anyone could boil meat and slice it on a plate. Nothing fantastic about it.

Fantastic food for reasonable price for Michellinn restaurants. First Michelin in Italy 70 years ago. Still keeping

Booked a table 2 weeks in advance after doing our research. We wanted to dine in a Michelin star restaurant and we thought this would be the place for us. Sadly we didn’t get to experience the food as the service was abysmal. We arrived 5 minutes earlier as instructed by the staff via phone, after confirming the reservation. We were told to wait even though all the tables were empty. We waited for 15 minutes without anyone checking in on us or even letting us know that there will be a delay. Meanwhile, other patrons that arrived after us were seated and had already received their drinks. We eventually left, as this was not the experience we were looking for. Ended up dining in a much more deserving family owned restaurant, in Carpi.

Amazing experience in one of the icons of italian cuisine. We tried the spongolata, bolliti & arrosti + capeleti in brodo. Everything is equaly spectacular. Beware the portions for bolliti/arrosti are quite big. Whatever desert you take remember to ask for an additional spoon of sabaione which is probably the best I ever ate. Ridiculously huge wine list and sublime service. You can park in front of the restaurant and if you don’t have the italian parking meter they will give you a paper which regulates the parking. Overall an unforgettable experience
