The 27 Best Places To Eat & Drink In Detroit

"Sometimes the only way to refuel after a long night is a huge breakfast and countless coffee refills with no judgement. You’ll get both of these at Clique, a classic diner located in the Rivertown Inn & Suites right off East Jefferson. Everything you could ever want after waking up sleep deprived on the weekend is available here, but the grilled cinnamon roll and breakfast skillets are two of our favorites. It’s always packed during prime brunch hours on the weekend, but if you’re staying nearby and need to stay horizontal for a while longer, they also deliver." - sara barron, sam faye

This has to be a Detroit hidden gem for locals and tourist. My wife and I were in town for the Kendrick Lamar & SZA Grand National tour the night before, we had the pleasure of visiting this great establishment with fantastic service. The employees truly care and take their time making sure each customer from dine in to to go order are made correctly. If you’re ever in the D stop in and show Clique some love you won’t be disappointed.

Old favorite. The food is always perfect. I've been going there for breakfast since the late 90s, and the food is still consistent. Linda was the best server; she was super sweet and attentive. This place is a part of the Detroit experience—one of the best breakfast spots downtown. The hash browns and pancakes are so good. If you're reading this, go have some good food!

Google
The BEST corned beef. Lean & Tender. Had a front row seat to the action at the bar and the place was hopping. Glad I made it in before the cut off.. So good people in Cleveland are talking about this spot.

Beatriz Rodriguez

Google
Decent hash bowl. The pancakes were perfect. They were buttery soft and toasty at the edge.

Found this restaurant from a couple year old Reddit comment on breakfast recommendations in Detroit and I'm so glad I did. Clique is very unassuming as it is attached to a hotel. However, don't be fooled as this little diner puts out some great breakfast! We were there on a Friday during Lent, so my options were limited for veggies, but I made way with a great omelette and the best grits I have ever had. Seriously, the grits were fluffy and light, packed with flavor. Even if you don't like grits, you should try the ones here! With some sugar in them, they're lights out! A great spot for an old fashioned diner breakfast in Detroit, that I plan to make it back to the next time I'm in the city for breakfast.

Second time coming back here since I was a kid. The restaurant setting hasn’t changed much at all. Everything is still prepared the same way that I remember. It’s still a cozy and comfortable environment. The workers are hardworking and very polite as well. Ordered the two eggs deal with pancakes, home fries and turkey sausage. And boy was it good and reminded me of old fashioned home cooked breakfast. This is the best breakfast spot in downtown Detroit. 10/10 ;)

Google
Small diner, you can see them cooking the food freshly on the griddle, good service & coffee kept coming. Meat lovers omelet was good, pancakes were good , home fries were good. A lot of Detroit police officers eat there . If you’re looking for a super casual filling bite to eat, check this place out.

Sommer M

Google
Clique is so damn good, it’s cash only and all of the waitresses are so pretty. Every time I go I order the turkey sausage skillet with the side of pancakes and the pancakes are so damn good the meals are a perfect serving size … it’s so damn good. It’s a little small so you might have to gate keep this place.

Yelp
Very small diner with a personal touch. Ordered French toast two eggs, scrambled orange juice, hashbrowns silver dollars and skillet. Service is quick and punctual. The only drawback to location is that is a very small place so you have to wait to be seated for quite some time at times.

Yelp
I saw this place on an online video and decided to check it out spur of the moment because it wasn't too far from my area. The service was less than friendly which I was a little bit put off by. They were very busy but they seemed a little bit grouchy about getting tables cleared off. There's not many places to stand inside because it is a very tiny establishment attached to a hotel. But I was mainly just trying to move out of the way of the door and I felt like I was getting snapped at by the servers. The food more than made up for it. I did feel my boyfriend's stuffed French toast was a little bit of a small portion and should have came with a side of some sort, but my skillet was excellent. The toast was so good, and I left with leftovers. I can't wait to come back and I'm hoping for a full five star experience next time with kinder service.
google avatar

Stacey N.

Yelp
Good fresh breakfast good. Good service too. More of a whole in the wall feel but solid food!
google avatar

Hilary C.

Yelp
The best stuffed French toast I have ever had! Small diner but the food was amazing. The service was good too! The coffee kept coming and they don't charge you for refills. It's a little divey but I highly recommend it if you're in DT Detroit. Delicious!
google avatar

Ed K.

Yelp
Service is always top shelf. The food hits hot every time too. The guys on the grill are masterful. If you go alone and there is a chair at the counter have a seat and be mesmerized at their Mad skills. The only problem I have with the Clique is that they close too early. But for breakfast it is hard to top. They keep the coffee coming but they don't ding you for it like a lot of places do.
google avatar

Yelp
Listen to me when tell you this is a smallllll place but the food is amazing. The service was spot on and I loved how nice the waitresses were to us. The ambience was OK. We sat right off of the window which we could look at the street. The click is a one of a kind place and you definitely should visit it when you get a chance to go downtown Detroit just before you get to Bel isle

Yelp
Love this place!! I was introduced to it when I was a kid and hadn't been in over 5 or so years however I had been craving it. Since my moving downtown, it has been calling my name and I finally visited a few weeks ago and thank God it was everything I imagined it to be!!! I was more than pleased with the taste and speed of my food. The service I received from the young lady was SUPERB (I hate I can't remember her name but she was a young lighter skin woman) She was amazing! Kept our drinks filled, provided different things without us even having to ask. It was a great experience. The place hasn't changed one bit, how I wish it was a larger space but it gets the job done. I can't wait to return I hope my favorite waitress is working again!
google avatar

Opolla B.

Yelp
Food is good. It's breakfast. It's hard to mess that up. Service is good as well. I miss some items like the short ribs. But they had good service during the pandemic and they were safe and clean. I'm glad they're still open.
google avatar

Yelp
Breakfast was delicious! Service from the staff was GREAT! The atmosphere was really cool and laid back! Everyone seemed friendly! Will definitely come back when I'm back in Detroit!

Yelp
#2nd review, Best breakfast spot downtown, hands down. Service great, everyone is welcome. Atmosphere is great , good morning vibes . Food is always very good.

Yelp
Ok, let's get a few things out of the way. This place is small, divey and the parking availability can be sketchy. There may be a wait, due to their limited hours and your waitress may be a little frazzled, because of the rush. Now that we have gotten through that. The food is good. We had the Big Clique with pancakes, toast and added hash browns and grits. Don't judge me because of the carbs. Just get on board and try it. One is really enough for two people to share and add any desired sides. Everything came out quickly, was cooked well and as requested. The cup of coffee was strong and bottomless. Even though our waitress was super busy, she was still accommodating and pleasant. As a courtesy to other customers, during busy hours you probably want to be prepared to get your food eat and go, without a lot of dallying after you're done.
google avatar

Craig J.

Yelp
Excellent experience. They have the best breakfast in the city. I went 4 days in a row while visiting downtown.
google avatar

JoAnna G.

Yelp
Now this is the spot for breakfast! Diner vibe. Can sit at the counter & watch them make your food. If you're lucky you can grab a table. We were greeted right away & food came out fast. Had the pancakes & corn beef hash. Both delicious & the coffee was also on point. Highly recommend but make sure you have cash. No cards accepted.

Yelp
My second time ever coming here, but my 1st yelp review. ALWAYS busy! My first time was on a weekday afternoon. Today, it's a weekday morning. It gives me a very home kitcheney feel. Not like being at a coney. Maybe it's bc i always sit at the counter where food is made on the other side. Chocolate chips aren't cooked in the silver dollar pancakes. When the waitress came to check on me after delivering my food i had to get a carrout bc i needed to go to a meeting so i was only in the restaurant for 30min. From the quarter of my food that i had eaten, i enjoyed it!
google avatar

Lewis A.

Yelp
Food was fantastic. Definitely enjoy this hole in a wall, it is cash only. Silver dollar pancakes are so good.

Elizabeth D.

Yelp
Great food.... Great service... open from 7am-230pm Mon-Sat. The ambiance is great. Always busy but small

Yelp
I didn't expect much seeing that this place was attached to a Comfort Inn and looked rather old, but this place is a hidden gem! The food was so delicious and the service was excellent! I would absolutely come back here again.
google avatar

Christopher D.

Yelp
The Clique has great food for great prices. The Salmon Cakes and Eggs for breakfast is tremendous. It was a great surprise given the exterior of the restaurant. It's cash only, so come prepared!

Quincy L.

Yelp
I went in to pick up my Order so I cash only sign before I can get inside. Went to the ATM to get cash came back Order so I cash only sign before I can get inside. Went to the ATM to get cash came back Found out Icould've just use my card I asked her to please take down the sign She-gave me my food on my way out she Call me a bitch.
google avatar

Camille Ann B.

Yelp
The food is consistently good. Always worth the wait. The silver dollar pancakes are the BRST!
google avatar

Jess L.

Yelp
Just re-reviewing since my last was three years ago. Still a great spot for breakfast/brunch. I've gotten carry out too, which I don't recommend. The food is much better eaten fresh there. Often a wait during lunch hours (it's small inside). But great food and friendly service.
google avatar

Jennifer W.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our breakfast. I ordered the salmon croquettes first but they were a little dry and on the fishy side so I chose something else. The catfish and grits with scrambled eggs really made up for that first dish. My friend had the Big Clique breakfast, and she liked it also. That was a lot of food so she had most of it leftover. Both of us had the pancakes and agree that they were great.
google avatar

Mitch P.

Yelp
7 of us from out of town came here based upon the recommendation of a relative, as it was less than 10 minutes from where we were staying and they said the food was good. With 7 of us we had to get 2 tables, and the wait was only about 10-15 minutes as they didn't take reservations and there were others in front of us and the restaurant was pretty full. The first thing to share is that all the waitstaff were friendly and helpful in every way possible, from getting us seats to serving, filling up tea and water and anything else that was asked for. From raisin bread French toast to ham and eggs, bacon ham and eggs and an omelette, everyone enjoyed their food although none of the men finished their entire meal. Erika waited on both tables and she was both friendly and helpful. If you're in downtown Detroit and want a nice place with fair prices we'd all recommend this restaurant.
google avatar

Norman L.

Yelp
I've been going here since I was a kid and everything looks and taste the same. I got the banana foster French toast with cheese eggs and turkey sausage 10/10. The atmosphere is the same from 8 years ago. The service is also the same. I highly recommend going to this restaurant not because I've been going here for a long time but because the food, the service and atmosphere is bomb.

Ambri W.

Yelp
my favorite place when i land in the city. Me and my mama been coming here since i was a kid.

J p.

Yelp
The food was not worth $53. I'm from the south and no these are not your grandmothers or moms salmons Pattie's. The Small salmon Pattie's were Super thin. Made me side eye the restaurant. The service was ok. Had a hair in it the first time around. The ambiance was just ok. A $10 breakfast spot maybe if it tasted better because it wasn't seasoned.
google avatar

Dennis F.

Yelp
Hands down the best breakfast spot in Michigan, you have to make a stop here and experience the culture, history of this place. Been a staple in the Cityfor over 60 years.
google avatar

TyRonn L.

Yelp
Visited here for the first time to accompany a good friend for a business meeting. Being a newbie in Detroit, i didn't know anything of this restaurant; however the crowd already present upon our arrival was a very good sign. The Staff was pleasant and knowledgeable. Beyond the fact the restaurant was out of lettuce and chicken sausage, i was very pleased with my breakfast.
google avatar

Kim H.

Yelp
Had a great breakfast here. Small little location connected to a small hotel. Waitress was great service was fast and food was delicious. The menu is not large but the food is delicious the portions are large and you can get a various variety of breakfast food. Definitely a place I would visit again . We had catfish, omelettes, pancakes, grits and so much more and everything was great If your in town or nearby stop by

Yelp
It is a small spot and dice next to a motel, yes a motel, trying to keep an open mind, it does after all have 4.5 stars. Started off with the grilled cinnamon roll, chicken skillet with raisin toast, Mexican omelet with turkey sausage, well done home fries and pancakes. The guy manning the eggs and omelets is fast as lightening, the other guy runs the pancake, home fries and the grilled meats and bacon. The other guy (manager?) puts together the plates. One lady cashes out and the other lady is making coffee as well as putting together the to go order, another guy puts out all of the ingredients and another cleans up and does the dishes. It's a well oiled machine here and in such a small and tight space too. Our waters and setting were out quick. Order in just as fast. The grilled cinnamon roll came out soon after the order was in. It's delicious, the top is slightly crunchy from the grill and the icing is decadent and good, the bottom half needed more frosting to make it better. I think it's best to eat the top and bottom together to distribute the icing on top and bottom pieces, goes down much more smoothly as a result. Eating the bottom alone is dry and lack luster. The side of pancakes that comes with the Mexican omelet are silver dollar sized, they are not bad, not special. My husband found a single short black hair in his eggs on his chicken skillet, he said he was done eating today after finding the hair. It was shown to the waitress and promptly returned and taken off the bill. The cream sauce that comes with the Mexican omelet is very salty and runny and not good. The Mexican omelet is okay. Would be much better with some Cholula sauce or Mexican oriented hot sauce. The overall bill was $17.75. Minus the short black hair in the eggs for the chicken skillet. The pancake, Mexican omelet, raisin toast and home fries were all average. The best part of our meal was the top part of our grilled cinnamon roll.

Yelp
Incredible all around breakfast. The corn beef hash was great, the pancakes were delicious and the bacon and sausage were cooked perfectly. Truly a Diamond in the rough.
google avatar

Delvis L.

Yelp
It's not in the best location, small parking lot, BUT whenever I'm in the mood for salmon Pattie's for breakfast . It's my first to go to. This small restaurant is always busy and they're quick with placing your order. If you decide to dine inside. It's limited seating and space, but the waitresses are ready to take your order.

Scott M.

Yelp
Closed on Sunday, new hours aren't posted except on their door. Cash only. Waste of a walk
google avatar

Melissa A.

Yelp
#COVIDreview This place is excellent. The food, the prices, the service. I just got the breakfast special or something but I didn't think it's be that special. The ham was divine and a huge portion. The pancakes were incredible. During COVID they are seating every other table, masks required until you get to your seat, servers and cooks all masked. It's still a little tight in there and from where we were sitting the table across the aisle felt a little close and of course, kids and at least one adult, were getting up to use the bathroom and not putting their masks on (and we were at the table near the restroom). So if you're squeamish, maybe order to-go. I know they are doing the best they can with limited space and you can't help if people don't follow the rules. I'm glad we went but I'll probably order to go next time so I can enjoy my pancakes without worrying about an unmasked kid standing right next to me.

Yelp
I thought I was gonna have to fight this last time. Let me explain. Good food and great service at the counter 1st time. Those home fries go down as some of the best I ever had including my many a trek to the south. Had the bacon sausage eggs pancakes. All darn good. I mean good enough to get over the fact its next to a kinda seedy hotel and is crazy small inside. So on to the almost fight.. I asked who I thought was our waitress to bring me a box cause hey leftovers. She said ok soon as I get a chance. About 10 min later I see her going behind the counter and asked again. She goes off. What u think u can just ask anybody for a box? Why don't u ask him or her or blah blah. What?! So I started calling after her asking her why in the world she talking to me that way?! Tells the gentleman bussing the tables Im not even their server. Ok but you gotta act like that? Just get our server as we had been sitting finished for at least 15 minutes. Our server hurried and showed up with the tab and box. Got many apologies from the other staff members. Dropped my phone as my babe was dragging me out of there because you know I was still pissed off and it was going to be a problem because she still mumbling stuff from the other side. One of the servers ran out and gave it to me and apologized to me again but wth?. Great food here and deserves to be 5 stars but not after being disrespected in that manner. I ll be back. Im not worried about that rude chick. We can meet outside

Devon R.

Yelp
Top notch breakfast, food is served fast and fresh to go somewhat of an inconvenience being a "cash only" restaurant but it's worth it.
google avatar

Danell P.

Yelp
Awesome place awesome food very good people friendly people food definitely hot cooked to order very well appreciate it. I recommend this place to anyone in my city.

Kevin B.

Yelp
They are price gouging, they charging 16 for an omelette, even if they use the whole dozen that's too much
google avatar

Morgan L.

Yelp
Old school diner feel, with great food. The corned beef skillet was the best skillet I have ever had, anywhere. The side pancakes were perfectly done. Staff were friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
The last time I ever saw my dad was at this restaurant about 40 years ago. I don't even remember what I ate back then, but I will remember what I ate this time around! The food is absolutely simply outstanding!! You can just tell that there are great restaurants that have a great practice for some reason because they get it. Maybe it's because the grills are seasoned so perfectly through the years? Or maybe they just know how to cook! This isn't a hipster place...this is a place where you can go for a great simple traditional breakfast that's loaded with FLAVOR!! The MEAT LOVERS skillet was so good , I'd have it twice in a day..IM NOT KIDDING. The staff? They were really busy and super polite and nice. This is the best breakfast place in town. I know there are some new cool places , but this is where I'd go if I wanted a real BREAKFAST!!! Some day, I'll go for other meals. Haven't yet.

Patricia B.

Yelp
The food is amazing! Omelette was great so fluffy and filled with corned beef. I have eaten instant grits for so long I forgot what real ones taste like. Waitstaff was on the ball friendly and inviting. 5 stars.
google avatar

Scott H.

Yelp
The reviews were dead on. Service was nice but very slow. The resteraunt is on the side of a run down hotel and so the place isn't exactly a great looking diner, but the food was really good. Our waitress was very nice and friendly. The food takes a little while to get and it's a pretty small place so not many seats. Overall we knew what we were walking into and the food and service was very good.
google avatar

Sally M.

Yelp
Best dive in town! The folks work hard and feed you good nothing fancy... nothing but that's the point!
google avatar

India B.

Yelp
We've all heard the phrase "Don't judge a book by its cover" , that certainly applies to the Clique. Its attached to a shabby motel and at first glance, the number of cars outside might make you think something illicit is going on. DISREGARD the gut feelings to flee the scene and go inside, you will NOT regret it! I've been a few times for breakfast and as a southern girl, I can honestly say The Clique blows several establishments back home out of the water. I'm a huge fan of the grits, pancakes and bacon (its not that wimpy Oscar Meyer bacon either, its hardy, thick cut bacon like Wrights). Plus, you get huge portions for the price. The interior is diner style, nothing too fancy, but some of Detroit's finest dine here because the food speaks for itself. The staff here are also great, I've always had great service here (Toya is my go-to waitress). I will say that the owner or manager guy can be quite rude to his staff, I've sat at the counter a few times and witnessed him chew out a few employees in front of the whole restaurant. Other than that, I have no gripes about The Clique. Until the next time Detroit!

Jasmine H.

Yelp
Everything was amazing! Had the salmon patties(aka salmon croquettes) and rice. Im from the south and this meal took me back like i was back home! The servers were amazing and the atmosphere is small but perfect!
google avatar

Ashley T.

Yelp
It's safe to order take out here or sit down! Love this place food is always great! The parking lot isn't the best but everything works out and it's worth the wait if there is one. The menu will surprise you and the freshness is awesome as well.

John K.

Yelp
The breakfast was delicious !great place if you're looking for some great breakfast you found it the scramblers are incredible

Yelp
What a gem in the city. I normally don't eat breakfast so I never have the opportunity to try this place. Today I decided to give it a try and without a doubt lived up to all of my expectations. Super busy place but I was seated in a couple minutes of my arrival. I ordered the chicken scramble as my main meal. I also ordered the banana foster croissant and berry french toast to share. I cannot emphasize how delicious the croissant and toast were! It's a must get when you go here. The service was extraordinary and the staff were phenomenal. I will be back very soon.

Yelp
I was in Detroit several weeks ago and one of the old time favorites I had to grab some food from was The Clique. The first day in Detroit I stopped in The Clique to pick up a classic breakfast, two scrambled eggs, link sausages, hash browns, and toast for my mother and I. Let me tell you the eggs were buttery smooth, the hash browns Golden, and the sausage savory! My mother and I ate breakfast there five days straight! It's a must for breakfast and lunch.
