It’s Official: This is the European Country With the Most Cats

Central to the Kattenstoet, or ‘festival of the cats’, this historic tower in Ypres is tied to a darker past when cats, associated with witchcraft, were thrown from its height; today its grim history is reimagined in a much more playful way, as giant cat puppets, costumes and plush cat toys are paraded through town to celebrate felines instead. - Liv Kelly

We visited the In Flanders Museum that's housed in the Cloth Hall. The Hall was extensively renovated in the years following World War One when it suffered massive damage. We were very brave and paid a visit to the Belfry. It was very windy!

Large museum with lots of interactive areas, well worth a visit and pay the extra 2euro to climb the tower for epic views.

Absolutely beautiful building. I didn't go in and get the guided tour because I didn't have time but I will next time I visit. Lots of cafe's and shops near the museum and plenty to see.

Amazing museum and views from the bell tower. The bell tower climb wasn't the easiest.

In Flanders Museum - within the cloth hall. A 'must' visit if in Ypres. A stunning building, with an amazing 'rebuild ' history, housing A brilliant museum. This hall was pretty much flattened during the war, Churchill felt it should be left as rubble - a testament to the German destruction within Ypres. But it's been rebuilt, using as much of the original building material as possible. An incredible achievement. The museum is, of course, very sad, and by the end of your trip through it you can't help but recognise the futility of the loss of all lives here. We'll documented, with visual films etc in 4 languages. We'll worth a couple of hours here. Around £10 entry. Toilets etc inside and gift/information shop.

A simply stunning building , beautifully and faithfully rebuilt after near total destruction during the first World War . Ypres itself is a beautiful city with very friendly residents with a good array of bars and restaurants .

Yelp
Sadly on this visit the museum is closed for renovation but will reopen in June 2012. Just have to come again 19/7/2010 A truly fantastic museum, on entry you are given the identity of a soldier from the war & follow his trail in the war. Sadly many do not see the end. Ypres is a beautiful town with the Market place & cloth hall at it's heart. I would certainly recommend a trip to here.

Yelp
The 'In Flanders Fields' museum was the highlight of my trip to Belgium. The whole town of Ypres is wonderful, but the Mennin Gate and the In Flanders Fields museum are particularly thought-provoking and powerful. The museum itself is one of the best museums I've ever visited. I'm not even that interested in wars and all things like that, but I found it to be well-laid out and powerful. The museum is sitauted inside the old cloth building, which has been rebuilt to show the amount of damage - so there are bullet holes throughout. Inside, the museum isn't very big but it's well organised. Visitors are given a card containing the name of someone who was in WWI and throughout the museum there are boxes in which people can check up on how their characters are doing. The museum is designed to invoke a reaction. Throughout, it uses a powerful mixture of noise, films, images and words to convey the emotions of the time there are letters from soldiers saying sad things like I blew off a soldiers head today, got a bit of blood on my shirt which was a pain. It's saddening. Periodically, there are gunshots and bomb blasts overhead, for added effect. At the end of the trail in the museum there's a giftshop. They seem to have a Poppy theme throughout it, and lots of items displaying the poppies and the famous 'In Flanders Fields' poem.

Yelp
Its hard to think of the words to say. This is one of the biggest memorials I have ever been to. I went to this places on a school trip it was a lot of fun, but when walking run the memorial we all were very respectful except for some rude people that were running about making loads of noise. Belgium is a lovely places to visit its architecture is amazing and it really feels different to my local area of Greenwich. I really persuading you to go to this places because its really moving and, it also makes you think about what the people of that country did to stop the war. The amount of lives that were lost are just shocking.

Yelp
In Flanders Fields is a 'museum' in the beautiful old cloth hall in the centre of Ypres but it is quite unlike a typical museum, more of a permanent exhibition. It uses multi media and multi sensory and multi language techniques to evoke an emotive response. It's very hard to describe but very powerful and moving and a very good way to enable a younger, media savvy generation to gain some understanding of the nature of the Frist World War. For me the image that sticks is of the some of the famous war poems 'Gas, gas, quick boys' heard whilst watching tubes with gas masks inside fill with eerie green gas. This place is everything a modern museum should be.
